Many late 1950's and early '60's born UK people have discoloured teeth because of an anti-biotic prescribed to their expectant mothers I'm reliably informed. This is anecdotal, but I personally note that this must have impacted genetically as it seems to have passed to subsequent generations. Should these damaged people be compensated like those who suffered terrible disfigurment from Thalidomide?

I have discoloured teeth from steroids when I was much younger. I think my liver is a bit knacked from it too - need to get around to doing a liver flush as soon as i have a weekend free.

I'm in that age bracket and have had problems.

I remember at senior school around 70-72 there was an experiment which involved some pink tablet one had to dissolve in the mouth, then an x-ray was taken!

I don't know any more than that, but recently I did remember it what with all the genetics talk on the news etc.

Makes you wonder eh!

Fluoride causes fluorosis of teeth and bones.

Quote:
Fluoridation: A Horror Story

http://www.ahealedplanet.net/fluoride.htm

Quote:
International reports of fluoride damage mushroomed in 1933 when the world's first major air pollution disaster struck Belgium's Meuse Valley: several thousand people became violently ill and 60 died. The cause was disputed, but investigations by prominent scientists, including Kaj Roholm, the world's leading authority on fluoride hazards, placed the blame on fluoride. (21)

Here and abroad, health scientists were beginning to regard fluoride as a poison, pure and simple. The trend toward its removal from the environment was potentially disastrous from industry's point of view. "Only recently, that is, within the last ten years, has the serious nature of fluoride toxicity been realized," wrote Lloyd DeEds, senior toxicologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1933. "It is a well-established fact that chronic intoxication [poisoning] may manifest itself in man as recognized abnormalities only after constant, or at least frequent, exposure over many years....

Quote:
in 1946, despite the fact that the official 15-year experiment in Michigan had barely begun, six more U.S. cities were allowed to fluoridate their water. The fluoridation bandwagon had begun to roll.

At this juncture, Oscar R. Ewing, a long-time ALCOA lawyer who had recently been named the company's chief counsel with fees in the then-astronomical range of $750,000 a year (35) -- arrived in Washington. Ewing was presumably well aware of ALCOA's fluoride litigation problem. He had handled the company's negotiations with the government for the building of its wartime plants. (36)

In 1947, Ewing was appointed head of the Federal Security Agency (later HEW), a position that placed him in charge of the Public Health Service (PHS). Under him, a national water fluoridation campaign rapidly materialized, ....

Money Master & Monopoly

Quote:
Noted economist and former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan criticized the judgment of monopoly against Alcoa (Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal; see[5]) quotes Learned Hand, the judge in U.S. v Alcoa, who remarked, "It was not inevitable that it should always anticipate increases in the demand for ingot and be prepared to supply them. Nothing compelled it to keep doubling and redoubling its capacity before others entered the field. It insists that it never excluded competitors; but we can think of no more effective exclusion than progressively to embrace each new opportunity as it opened, and to face every newcomer with new capacity already geared into a great organization, having the advantage of experience, trade connections and the elite of personnel." Greenspan believes that the characterization of Alcoa as a threat to competition is erroneous, as "ALCOA is being condemned for being too successful, too efficient, and too good a competitor. Whatever damage the antitrust laws may have done to our economy, whatever distortions of the structure of the nation's capital they may have created, these are less disastrous than the fact that the effective purpose, the hidden intent, and the actual practice of the antitrust laws in the United States have led to the condemnation of the productive and efficient members of our society because they are productive and efficient." Greenspan grants that Alcoa was a monopoly, but maintains that it was not a coercive monopoly and, hence, should not have been subject to anti-trust action.

Quote:
Based on year 2000 data,[6] the University of Massachusetts' Political Economy Research Institute determined that Alcoa was is one of the top ten most toxic companies in the country, producing 9,884,267 pounds of toxic chemicals in that year. [7]

Fluoride is highly toxic and should never be used in toothpaste, water; in fact anywhere near any God's living creature.
I use baking soda on my toothbrush instead of toothpaste. It works a treat!
Toothpaste, even the fluoride/sodium laureth sulfate poison (also used as industrial degreasant and garage floor cleaner)-free variety, prevents remineralisation of your teeth because of its glycerine content that sticks to your teeth and forms a barrier. Soda is also highly alkalizing and gently whitens your teeth.
Try it out and see for yourself.

I'm not talking about tooth staining from poor oral hygiene or fluoride or bionic tooth brushes even, this anti-biotic taken by pregnant women permenantly discoloured the teeth of a generation and, of course, side effects rarely come in ones.

Are you meaning this antibiotic; Tetracycline?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetracycline

It does indeed stain developing teeth and thus now is avoided during pregnancy, so that's reliable info. It also uptakes into bone but is regarded as very safe (as was fluoride though, see Dr P Mullenix).

I highly doubt any lawsuits would get anywhere and if they could it will have already occurred. (seems some companies have paid out compensation afterall)

Tetragenex
Compensation expenses: over various recent years = 183,094 256,636 419,338 450,743 (this probably isn't purely for tetracycline though)

See here: http://www.secinfo.com/dScj2.u6Hq.htm

The only hint of conspiracy otherwise that I can find thus far is PATENT issues and price fixing with Pfizer and others,

see this Time Magazine article from 1958

Dissent on Wonder Drugs
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,825466,00.html

Whilst here Ralph Nader gets a mention for a paper to the Federal Trade Commission over price fixing
http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0026-2234(196911)68%3A1%3C151%3ATCATF T%3E2.0.CO%3B2-M

The X-ray business mentioned is somewhat baffling but I'm no expert despite some radiographic experience.

I can find a few papers on X ray Powder Diffraction tests of antibiotics but that was lab based and not on patients. http://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/analsci/21/7/833/_pdf

The pink tablet sounds more like a disclosing agent and the X ray perhaps just routine. I'd be interested if you find anything it about though.

An Evil Squirrel Conspiracy of patients taking animal grade Tetracycline floats this bloggers boat aswell http://www.theindychannel.com/entertainment/1702824/detail.html

but that's probably just nutty ramblings resulting from chasing up the wrong trees Rolling Eyes

Cheers CatPhish - I never think about Ebay immediately - guess the endless advertising they do hasn't worked on everyone.

Just found a reference to pink tablets:

Quote:
When I first started working, in my training class there was a woman whose kids needed some extensive dental procedures done. I think her kids were in first and second grades. Part of the problem was that their house used well water, not fluoridated city water. It was decided that her kids were not getting the fluoride that they needed and had to start using pink tablets to supplement that need for their teeth.

http://www.parentingsites411.com/the-411-teeth-and-your-kids/#more-74

They may not be the same pink tablets of 35ish years ago.

Also found:

Renee from Canada:

Quote:
Remember those pink tablets they gave out in school that you had to chew to see how good a job you did brushing? Or was that just Canada?

Ellipsisknits from Ohio

Quote:
I wanted to add to renee that we had those tablets in Ohio, so they weren't *just* Canada.

marit from Norway

Quote:
We had those pink tablets in Norway too:-).
