New ID's on the way in Michigan.

Terri Lynn Land, the Secretary of State for Michigan, apparently can't wait until next year to get the RF-chipped REAL ID show on the road.

"Without a revised ID card and license, residents would need a passport to get on a domestic flight when the federal law takes effect, according to Land's office."

"Other legislation proposed by Land would create an optional, enhanced driver's license and state ID card. The enhanced version could be used for travel to Canada and other Western Hemisphere countries in place of a passport once the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative takes effect in 2008."

Look kids, it's the beginning of a whole new class structure...

Now, according to the story on National Public Radio today, all of the licenses will have an RF chip in them, not just the 'upgraded' ones.

Are there any opposition groups fighting this move?

I'm always surprised that 'pillar of the community' types I know (school principals, solicitors, clergymen) who wouldn't reconsider 911 with a mental bargepole are actually very supportive of the N02ID campaign here in the UK.

From lengthy discussions I've had, they actually appreciate without being prompted that the only reason for holding the information is control - and not only in ways that are obvious today, but in ways as yet undreamt of as the data apparatchiks start their inevitable programs 'because they can'.

'Slippery slope' is the most commonly heard phrase.

I don’t understand why “they” are still pushing the agenda forward so aggressively. They must know that the harder they push, the more people start waking up and getting active. Even the liberals at DailyKos have started waking up!

Is it a rational strategy; or is it a Frankenstein monster they’ve unleashed and can’t get under control again?
