The London Bombings: An Independent Inquiry (London: Duckworth, 2006)

by Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed

"A lucid and persuasive account... of how our security mandarins talked themselves into believing we could make quiet, backroom deals with terrorists."
Brian Appleyard, SUNDAY TIMES

"A devastating book on the July 7th attacks... [Ahmed] draws the parallel between the failed Iraq intelligence and that surrounding the London bombings."
Andy Rowell, SPINWATCH

"Nafeez Ahmed's understanding of the post 9/11 power game, its lies, illusions and dangers, is no less than brilliant "
John Pilger

"On the subject [of 9/11] the best, most balanced report, thus far, is by Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed."
Gore Vidal, THE OBSERVER

At first, the police were sure that the 7/7 bombers used weapons-grade plastic explosives and sophisticated timers. Two weeks later, they changed their minds - the bombs were home-made and were detonated manually. Since then the official account has changed repeatedly and remains riddled with anomalies and confusion.

The government is resisting calls for a full inquiry and has instead presented a 'narrative' written by a civil servant. This supposedly defiinitive account has already collapsed in the face of public scrutiny and leaks from the security services.

As Nafeez demonstrates the attacks can only be fully understood in the light of extensive co-operation between Islamist extremists and Western Intelligence in Central Asia. The London bombings, much like the attacks on New York in 2001, were a widely predicted consequence of the West's global strategy. If we do face a future of terrorism we should at least understand  the extent to which our governments have accepted this as the price of business as usual.

Looking beyond the platitudes and deceptions of the war on terror, Nafeez asks what exactly we mean by the national interest and whether we are really well served by policies that promote terror abroad and tolerate extremism at home.

In over 300 pages, based on over 500 references, Nafeez examines contradictions and anomalies in official claims about:
- the type of explosives used
- the nature of the explosions
- the bombers' movements prior to and on 7th July
- the connections of the bombers to a wider terrorist network inside the UK
- the British government's domestic tolerance and protection of extremist groups linked to terrorist activity
- the state's use of al-Qaeda affiliated networks to secure strategic and economics interests in the Balkans, Central Asia and Northwest Africa.
- the details of the 21st July attacks
- the police shooting of De Menezes
- what intelligence services knew in advance about the bombers, the networks that incubated them, and the attacks

On this basis, Nafeez establishes the urgency of an independent public inquiry into the London bombings and the failed "national security" framework that surrounds them in the first comprehensive, critical appraisal of the tragic events of last year to date.

Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed is 27 years old and lives in North London. He teaches undergraduate courses at the Department of International Relations, University of Sussex, Brighton, where he is currently a PhD candidate. He is also director of the Institute for Policy Research & Development, based in central London. Nafeez is considered a leading authority on Western foreign policies and international terrorism, and has been writing about these subjects since the terrorist attacks of 11th September 2001 in books, magazines, on the internet, and in peer-reviewed academic journals. His first book, The War on Freedom: How & Why America was Attacked, September 11, 2001 (Joshua Tree, CA: Tree of Life, 2002), was an instant bestseller in the US, Germany and Italy, and won the latter’s Naples Prize. His 2nd book, Behind the War on Terror: Western Secret Strategy and the Struggle for Iraq (London: Clairview, 2003), examines the role of energy in the pattern of Western interventionism in the Middle East since the collapse of the Ottomon Empire. After the release of his third book, The War on Truth: 9/11, Disinformation and the Anatomy of Terrorism (New York: Olive Branch, 2005), he testified as an expert witness in US Congress about his research.

Praise for Nafeez's previous works:

The War on Truth

“Nafeez Ahmed’s book demonstrates brilliantly that the war on freedom is inseparable from the war on truth. That is why the struggle for freedom and democracy must simultaneously be a struggle for truth. It is no accident that Gandhi’s tool for freedom was satyagraha – the force of truth – exercised through non-cooperation with the violence and injustice of the empire.” --Dr. Vandana Shiva, Director, Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Natural Resource Policy in New Delhi, and International Forum on Globalization in San Francisco; 1993 Winner of Alternative Nobel Prize

“‘The War on Truth’ is a monumental work of breathtaking scope and detail.  Copiously documented, this book puts 9/11 in its historical context and shows that the American people have been subjected to a massive disinformation campaign.  Every American interested in politics, history, and truth should read it. --Dr. Robert M. Bowman, Lt. Col., US Air Force (ret.); former Director of Advanced Space Programs Development (‘Star Wars’), Air Force Space Division, under Presidents Ford and Carter

“The War on Truth by Nafeez Ahmed opens the door of understanding to a socio-historical context of the 9/11 tragedy. Ahmed weaves a story of deception, disinformation, and propaganda linked to US imperial interests embedded in long-term relationships with al-Qaeda mujihadeen groups. Readers will leave with open questions regarding the veracity of the government’s version of 9/11 and a deep sense of unease with our national security state. This book should be required reading for political science, sociology and history students, as well as for everyone who cares about democracy and open/transparent government.” --Peter Phillips, Professor of Sociology and Director, Project Censored, Sonoma State University

“In ‘The War on Truth’, Nafeez Ahmed, with as usual excellent documentation, maps out the logistical interlocks of Western power and international terrorism. The conclusions he draws, following clearly from the wealth of evidence he presents, is that al-Qaeda terrorism is an integral lead-function of the global corporate market system in its expansion without limit of border or life, a system that works precisely by not being
understood.” --John McMurtry, Professor of Philosophy, University of Guelph; Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada; Editor, Philosophy and World Problems, UNESCO Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems

“The War on Truth is an outstanding book on arguably the most important issue of our times. I hope it receives the widespread attention it so richly deserves.” --Robert W. McChesney, Professor of Communication, University of Illinois; author, The Problem of the Media

“The new book by Nafeez Ahmed, based on very extensive and deep research, is by far the best on the 9/11 syndrome. Articulating and documenting what many feel, and empowering them into action, the book will have an impact on entrenched US empire elites unwilling and unable to take it on. Votes of thanks to Ahmed, and to Interlink!” --Johan Galtung, Professor of Peace Studies, University of Hawaii; Director TRANSCEND: A Peace & Development Organisation for Conflict Transformation by Peaceful Means

Behind the War on Terror

"I wish every American who still believes in the good intentions of our government would read this book.  Drawing upon his impressive research into recent history, Nafeez Ahmed skilfully exposes the real motives behind the "war on terrorism" and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq."— HOWARD ZINN, PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF POLITICAL SCIENCE AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY; AUTHOR OF A PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES

"If anyone craves irrefutable evidence of the U.S.'s aspirations to empire since World War II, read this book.  If anyone wants to comprehend the mechanisms whereby classical imperialism was restyled into corporate globalization, read this book.  And be shaken."— CHELLIS GLENDINNING, PH.D., AUTHOR OF OFF THE MAP: AN EXPEDITION DEEP INTO EMPIRE AND THE GLOBAL ECONOMY

"Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed gives us an incisive, longer-term view of U.S. and Western foreign policy intentions in Iraq — well worth reading".—PROFESSOR RICARDO RENE LAREMONT, CHAIR OF DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY; ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL CULTURAL STUDIES, STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK, BINGHAMTON

"In a worthy sequel to the author’s path-breaking expose of 9/11, this book exposes the real reasons for the War Against Iraq. Ahmed recounts the untold history of how the orchestration of conflict and the conduct of military operations by Anglo-American power in the Middle East since Lawrence of Arabia has led today to a form of worldwide surrogate-imperialism."-- ANDRE GUNDER FRANK, SENIOR FELLOW, WORLD HISTORY CENTER IN NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY IN BOSTON, AND PROFESSOR OF WORLD HISTORY, UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA IN LINCOLN

"Why did we (really) go to war?  The Bush administration, whose answers don’t exactly add up, wishes the question would go away. This book will, crucially, help to make sure that it doesn’t."-- MIRIAM PEMBERTON, RESEARCH FELLOW, PEACE AND SECURITY PROGRAM, INSTITUTE FOR POLICY STUDIES, WASHINGTON DC, AND MILITARY AFFAIRS EDITOR OF FOREIGN POLICY IN FOCUS

"Americans have never been known for paying attention to the uglier side of U.S. history, but never has such history been so important. Nafeez Ahmed provides a valuable service by clearly laying out the facts and analysis people need to make sense of the U.S. attack on Iraq. The reality of U.S. policy in the Middle East isn’t pretty, which makes it all the more important to confront. Thanks to Ahmed for taking on the challenge."
-- ROBERT W. JENSEN, PROFESSOR AT THE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION SENIOR FELLOWS PROGRAM, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS, AUSTIN

Praise for The War on Freedom

“The material you have collected is immensely important and useful. You look at the right subjects and report a number of things I had missed entirely…. We need more people doing the important research that you have done.”
—Professor Peter Dale Scott, Co-Founder of the Peace and Conflict Studies Program, University of California, Berkeley

“A powerful thesis with strong support… The thesis is that our federal government… was frequently warned [of the 9/11 attack], but by near ‘criminal’ inaction that morning, did nothing to prevent it.… We will not shut down their support for [Osama bin Laden’s] terrorist organization because of our nation’s oil dependency and the Bush family and some cabinet officers’ commercial links.… If you are incredulous about these assertions, please read the book... Meticulously researched.”
—Professor Emeritus Charles Perrow, Department of Sociology, University of Yale

“This is a nicely comprehensive and well-organized report. Nafeez is to be commended on his work…. People’s eyes are opening to the fundamental failure of legitimacy, by its own stated standards, of this regime… I hope Nafeez and others will continue on this line of inquiry.”
—Stan Goff, (Rtd.) US Army Special Forces Master Sergeant, Tactics Instructor at the US Army Jungle Operations Training Center in Panama, Lecturer in Military Science and Doctrine at West Point Military Academy; involved in operations in eight designated conflict areas from Vietnam to Haiti

“The most complete book I know of, summarizing the relevant background and foreground intersecting upon the events of September 11, 2001.… A tour de force in every respect: organization, methodology, timeliness, clarity of purpose and of scope, activist commitment to more inquiry, evenness, relative comprehensiveness…. I can’t say how much I admire this work. It must be seen by as many people as possible all over the world as soon as possible.”
—Barrie Zwicker, Producer and Host, MediaFile, Vision TV Insight; award-winning journalist on CBC-TV and CTV

“Lays out an alternative history to the accepted explanation for what happened on 9/11… Ahmed raises an array of important political and historical issues that should be discussed.”
—NOW Magazine, Toronto

“A powerful and meticulously researched reconstruction of the background of events and the motivations of participants leading up to and following the infamous September 11 attacks on America.… Chilling, informative, and thought-provoking, The War On Freedom is very highly recommended reading and a welcome contribution to the growing library of information on contemporary international terrorism.”
—Midwest Book Review

“The information presented in this book is shocking, terrifying and severely under-reported. The War on Freedom is so ominous that I felt dirty reading it, and yet I was fascinated at the same time, like a young boy holding a magnifying glass up to an ant, enthralled with the burning creature struggling on the pavement…. If nothing else, this book makes me wish... I wouldn’t be so hasty and closed-minded as to dismiss any possibility without thoroughly considering it first.”
—Missoula News

“A truly meaningful gift... Ahmed’s research unveils America’s real agenda when we aided the Taliban against Russia, when we originally supported the idea of Al Qaeda and when we played dumb after being attacked.… Undeniable evidence that Sept. 11 should not have happened, could have been prevented and was a long time coming.”
—Pick for the Week, Philadelphia Weekly
