David Cameron under fire over Auschwitz gaffe

The Conservative leader David Cameron was criticised by Jewish groups and MPs after he said funding to send schoolchildren to Auschwitz was "a gimmick".

The Government said his remarks were "sick and ignorant" while Lord Janner, chairman of the Holocaust Educational Trust, described them as "a low form of politics".

The uproar began when a Conservative press release criticised 26 Government initiatives as "short-term gimmicks".

The list included a £4·6 million scheme announced by ministers this month to send sixth formers from every school in England to visit the Auschwitz concentration camp. The scheme ties in with Holocaust Memorial Day.

The Tories said schools would have to pay £100 to fund every pupil's trip. Mr Cameron said: "We've never known a government that is so obsessed with short-term gimmicks. We've had a gimmick for every week that Gordon Brown has been Prime Minister."

But Karen Pollock, the chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said the Government funding would allow them to take 15,000 students on the trips over the next three years.

"We do not want to be involved in party politics," she said.

"Since we have received Government funding, we have been able to offer two students from every secondary and sixth form college in the country, the opportunity to visit the former Nazi camps in Poland. Participants describe the experience as life-changing."........

Why not send the little nippers to Gaza in stead? That way they could get a view of living totalitarian atrocities. No need to send them to Silesia to see a fabricated relic when the real thing is available to be immediately experienced.

Another suggestion. Have a contest offering a reward for the best paper produced by a high school student refuting the works of Germar Rudolf. That should blow the whole Holocaust(TM) right out of the water.

This is serious news manipulation at work now.
Tory PR reptiles have got old lost and gone Hague to 'urge' Cameron not to apologise thus putting Cameron in a manufactured 'dilemma' and moving the story as far as possible away from the City of London manufactured mouth that uttered this idiotic and flippant remark.
If Gordon Brown had said this in the current Anti-Brown media spin climate he would have been crucified. Literally!
What an insight it gives into the mind-boggling extent of double standards, who really runs things and how governments and public opinion is formed.
