I also just yesterday came across this excellent presentation by law professor James Duane. Although American, many of the points apply equally to us here in the UK (but not, of course, the precedents quoted).
I'm an accountant and in my sphere of work have always given the standard advice to my clients, especially during a tax investigation, "Don't speak to the Revenue" for exactly the same reasons as Prof Duane says. But, in my opinion, this applies equally to any 'brush with authority', including the police.
