For those who aren't aware of Findhorn, it describes itself as a spiritual community, an ecovillage and an education centre: http://www.findhorn.org/index.php

I was there early last year, my experience was more like the video posted here: http://www.doyouknowyourdead.com/?page_id=28

I was more interested though when I read that 'The Psychosynthesis Education Trust' runs 'Essentials' courses at the 'prestigious' Findhorn Foundation. So, these are those who founded Findhorn:

Eileen Caddy

Quote:
Her father, Albert Jessop, was Irish, the director of Barclays Bank DCO (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas), and her mother Muriel was English.

She married Squadron Leader Andrew Combe in 1939 and had five children with him. Following a divorce, she married Squadron Leader Peter Caddy in 1957, with whom she had three children.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/1537268/Eileen-Caddy.html
Quote:
Combe became a leading light in the Oxford Group, otherwise known as Moral Re-armament, and dedicated himself to saving the world through Absolute Love, Absolute Truth, Absolute Purity and Absolute Honesty.

Moral Rearmament is now called: http://www.uk.initiativesofchange.org

By the early 1950s Andrew Combe had been posted officer in charge of administration at RAF Habbaniyah in Iraq, and it was there that Eileen first met Peter Caddy.

Eileen and Peter themselves became involved with Moral Rearmament:

www.thefourprecepts.com/propublish/art.php?artid=6...
Quote:
Eileen and Peter Caddy had also been on the fringes of MRA, a form of organized evangelical piety founded by Pennsylvania clergyman Frank Nathan Daniel Buchman.

Peter Caddy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Caddy
Quote:
Educated at Harrow, he apprenticed as a director with J. Lyons and Company, and was a member of the Rosicrucian Order Crotona Fellowship. On the outbreak of the Second World War he was commissioned as an officer with the Catering Branch of the Royal Air Force, where he served from 1940 until 1955.

Married five times

2nd wife: Sheena Govan
In 1965 wrote to his Rosicrutian mentor Walter Bullock:
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Mbq70tmt5h0C&pg=PA60&lpg=PA60&dq=jo hn+wood+dorothy+maclean&source=web&ots=kH898hMAID&sig=onI4BCMr9s7szOEo MFijTYpwCFo&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=4&ct=result#PPA64,M1

In 1965 Peter wrote to his old Rosicrucian mentor, Walter bullock: ‘Sheena had failed in her mission; the odds against her were too great. We now have no contact with her.’

So he maintained contact.

Peter and Eileen Caddy were involved in Moral Re-armament (MRA). Buchman, founder of MRA, attends Keswick Convention: http://www.faithatwork.com/history/HistoryP2.html

As does Sheena Govan's father, founder of Faith Mission: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keswick_Convention

It has been suggested that it was Henry Burt Wright who was ‘the decisive influence for Buchman’,

http://www.kheper.net/topics/Findhorn/roots_01.html
However the decisive influence for Buchman appears to have been Yale theology professor Henry Burt Wright (1877-1923) and his 1909 book The will of God and a man's lifework, though this was itself influenced by F. B. Meyer as well as another nineteenth century evangelical, Henry Drummond.

Henry Burt Wright was from Yale and a member of Skull and Bones, 1898: http://www.biblebelievers.org.au/bones.htm

Dorothy Maclean

www.findhorn.org/forums/global/story.php?id=281
Quote:
When World War II broke out, Dorothy was a young woman fresh out of a university secretarial course in Canada. Filled with an adventurous spirit and a desire to see the world, she answered an ad for a job in New York City. After she had been accepted and had arrived in that city, she discovered that her new employer was William Stephenson, the Canadian spymaster known as "Intrepid" who was the senior representative of the British Secret Intelligence Service for the entire western hemisphere. This brought her into a world of spies, intrigue, and secrecy. As part of British Intelligence, she was eventually assigned to Panama and later to Argentina and Uruguay. While on vacation in Brazil with her husband, she came in contact with a group of individuals who were followers of the Sufi teacher, Hazrat Inayat Khan. She was so impressed with the universality of their spiritual teachings that she began to study his writings. This prepared her inner soil for the growth later of her own unique spiritual work. Not long after this, she and her husband transferred to England for the remainder of the war, where she continued her work for British Intelligence. It was in that country that she eventually met Peter and Eileen Caddy, and the rest, as they say, is history.

(b. 1920 in Guelph, Ontario, Canada ) is a writer and educator on spiritual subjects who was one of the original three adults at what is now the Findhorn Foundation in northeast Scotland.
She obtained a 3-year Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario. From 1941 onwards she worked for the British Security Coordination in New York. After being posted to Panama, she met and married John Wood, though the couple would divorce in 1951.

Quote:
1940s -- Sheena Govan and Dorothy Maclean, who will in
the following decades help Eileen Caddy start Findhorn
(see, 1962), a New Age community in Scotland, are
actually working for British Intelligence while
ostensibly employed as secretaries at the British
Embassy in New York. The two are present there when
the OSS (Office of Strategic services, the forerunner
of the CIA) was formed in New York with the help of
British Intelligence (see, 1942).

Dorothy Maclean left Findhorn in 1973 and subsequently founded an educational organization in North America with David Spangler, the Lorian Association.

Sheena Govan

Second wife of Peter Caddy
Parents founded ‘The Faith Mission’ after her father attended a Keswick Convention:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keswick_Convention
Quote:
The Keswick Convention began in 1875 as a catalyst and focal point for the emerging Higher Life movement in the United Kingdom. It was founded by the Anglican T. D. Harford-Battersby and the Quaker Robert Wilson. The first Keswick Convention had over four hundred in attendance
John George Govan, who was to go on to found The Faith Mission in Scotland, was influenced by the Convention as well.
It was Stephen Olford who introduced Billy Graham to the Keswick message at a Keswick Convention in 1946 over a period of days of Bible study and prayer in a hotel room. This teaching gave Billy Graham the assurance of God's power in his life, which Billy said in his autobiography, "Just As I Am," came to him as a second blessing, and which has empowered his preaching ever since.

The Keswick Ministries are still very active: http://www.keswickministries.org/

Quote:
Dorothy .... studied with Sheena Govan, who taught unconditional love and Christ consciousness.
"When Sheena said she had guidance that my husband would be better off without me, as I was so dependent on him and my love was so conditional, I realized this truth. So against my personal desires, I showed my determination to be unselfish by divorcing him.
Peter Caddy was one of Sheena's students, and her husband for five years, often serving tea and biscuits at their gatherings. One day, Sheena told Peter it had been revealed to her that their time together was over and that he was now to find his "true partner.”
Soon after, he met and married Eileen. In spite of their personal differences, Dorothy, Peter and Eileen were committed to living according to God's will. The daily, minute-by-minute attunement to guidance led them perfectly to make a tremendous contribution—something they couldn’t realize for years.

David Spangler

Spangler was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1945. At the age of six, he moved to Morocco in North Africa where his father was assigned as a counterintelligence agent for U.S. Army Intelligence. He lived there for six years, returning to the United States when he was twelve in 1957. He attended Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, though his time there was interrupted when his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he graduated from high school. He attended Arizona State University where he was working for a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry.

Deerfield Academy, which David Spangler attended for a period of time.

Deerfield Academy costs considerable money to attend and has produced some prominent figures:
http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Deerfield-Academy
Quote:
In 2006, Deerfield's endowment was valued at $330 million, or roughly $550,000 per student. Tuition is $36,130 for boarding students and $27,100 for day students; the average annual expense is $60,000 per student. Endowment may refer to many things: Finance Financial endowment; relating to funds or property donated to institutions or individuals. ...

Queen Rania of Jordan is an honorary member of Deerfield Academy: http://www.encyclocentral.com/24707-Queen_Rania_Honorary_Member_Of_Dee rfield_Academy_Posted_A_Video_On_YouTube_On_March_30_2008.html

Along with numerous perquisites for staff, they offer ‘military leave time’: http://www.deerfield.edu/academics/index.cfm?page_ID=151
Quote:

Leave for professional development (sabbatical), holidays, vacation, sick, personal, funeral, maternity, and military leave time are all generously offered according to employee classification and federal and statutory laws.

Offers opportunities for students to join the military, but should secure nominations from members of Congress: http://www.deerfield.edu/academics/index.cfm?page_ID=195
Quote:
Military Scholarships
You might want to consider the options and economics of the military's educational programs. ROTC scholarships are fairly plump if you can win one. If you seek nomination to one of the service academies, that process must begin this Spring. If possible, student should plan to complete their physical exams over the summer, preferably with a military physician and secure nominations from members of Congress.

Even King Abdullah II of the nation of Jordan, has a boarding school history: he attended Deerfield Academy (Deerfield, Massachusetts)

An interesting piece of fiction describing Deerfield Academy:

I - Arrival
"Well, son, here we are, Deerfield Academy."
Seventeen year old Banks Brockton slouched down even further in his seat, glowering in silence at the imposing brick buildings that made up the campus of his new home. He could feel his father's eyes on him, but he refused to give the old Poodleman the satisfaction of acknowledging him.
"It looks nice," Travis Brockton ventured tentatively, pulling into the large circular driveway in front of the admissions and registration building. "I bet you'll make a lot of friends here."
'I had friends back at my old school,' Banks thought uncharitably, but didn't say it out loud. To do so would mean he was speaking to his father, and he had pretty much decided not to do that.
"Banks...."
Travis sounded tired and defeated. Banks almost felt sorry for him. Almost.
"Banks, this is a lot better than military school, and you know that's what your mother was pushing for. Maybe this will be a good experience! There are a lot of boys here your age, they all have the same... how should I put this... the same 'social advantages' that you do...."
Banks rolled his eyes. Social advantages, indeed. The old man thought that driving him here personally instead of letting the chauffeur do it was, like, a huge favor. Shyeah, He'd have rather dealt with Rollins.
"...and the sports here are highly respected. Their croquet team is undefeated!"
Banks finally looked over at his father, raising one expressive eyebrow.
Travis had the good graces to flush. "Well, okay, so maybe croquet isn't your thing. But there will be lots of other things to do, you'll see. Just give it a chance, Banks, please?"
Banks just rolled his eyes again and got out of the car. Croquet, indeed.
~*~
'*... *... pansy... jerk... moron....'
Banks smirked to himself as he made a mental note of the boys gathered in the admissions and orientation banquet hall. They all looked just like the kinds of boys he'd liked to beat up on at his old school, which, of course, was part of the reason he'd ended up here in the first place. Really, was it his fault that Terry Morgan turned out to be allergic to strawberries? And besides, he kid had made it through, and all, so it wasn't as if he was a murderer, or anything. "Stupid pissant Terry Morgan," he muttered under his breath, scowling even deeper.
"So, what are you in for?" lisped a soft voice to his left. Banks turned, surprised. A tall, well-built boy with facial hair and longish, floppy hair was standing right beside him, smiling pleasantly.
"Who the hell are you?"
"I asked you first," smiled the boy, eyes twinkling.
Banks studied him quietly for a moment. The guy was obviously a fag. It was in his speech, his stance, the fit of his clothing... not that Banks noticed the fit of his clothing, or anything. Right. "I got sent here instead of military school," he answered, sullenly.
The other boy laughed. "You didn't look like the type to come willingly. My parents sent me here when they figured out I was gay. I'm supposed to be reformed."
Banks looked askance at him. "They sent you to an all-boys prep school to reform you?"
The boy's grin got even wider. "My parents aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer." He held out a limp hand. "Anthony Giovanni."
Banks eyed him suspiciously for a moment before accepting the hand and shaking it firmly. "Banks Brockton."
"Oh, you poor thing. May I call you 'BB'?"
"May I kick your ass?"
Anthony sighed. "Banks it is, then. So, have you met anyone yet?"
"Besides you? No."
"Well, come on, then." Anthony placed a hand on his arm and dragged him across the room. "I haven't met many people yet, either, but these guys seem nice."
"Wait...." Banks dug in his heels, resisting. "Why'd you decide to latch on to me? I was putting on my 'don't look at me, don't touch me, don't even breathe on me or I'll tear your throat out' vibe."
Anthony giggled. "Oh, honey, that wasn't a 'don't touch me' vibe!"
"It wasn't?"
"No!"
Banks wrinkled his nose. "What was it, then?"
"It looked to me like a 'throw me down, rip off my clothes, and * me senseless' vibe. Oooh, fruit punch! Want some?"
For once in his life, Banks Brockton was left absolutely speechless.
~*~
"Randy! Oh, Randy!"
Banks rolled his eyes and did his best to disappear into the floor as Anthony sashayed across the floor.
"Hey, Anthony," answered a youthful-looking boy with thick, curly, blond hair. "Who's the leprechaun?"
Banks felt his hands snap into fists. "Leprechaun?!"
"Randall Timberwood, meet Banks Brockton. Banks Brockton, meet Randall Timberwood. And, Banks, before you try to pound his face in, you should know that he's a star on Deerfield's basketball team, so he's stronger than he looks."
Timberwood looked Banks up and down, visibly unimpressed. "Hey."
Banks shot him a burning gaze of death. "Right."
"Where's Josh?" Anthony was craning his neck, looking around for someone else.
"Little girl's room," Timberwood answered, his eyes still on Banks. "So, you play?" he asked, his smirk giving away what he thought the answer would be.
"Yeah, I play." It was taking all of Banks' control not to wipe that smirk off the pretty boy's face. Leprechaun, indeed.
"Uh-huh. So, Tony, why'd you grab this guy? He's trippin'."
"Randy, don't you have eyes? He's hot as hell!"
Banks, much to his chagrin, blushed deeply.
Timberwood looked insulted. "Hot? Him? What about me? I'm hot!"
Anthony shook his head. "Sorry, honey. I know hot when I see it, and you're not it."
It was Timberwood's turn to scowl.
"You're cute, though," Anthony assured him. "Perfectly acceptable. Oh, there he is!" He threw a hand in the air and waved frantically to someone by the open doorway. "Joshua, over heeere!"
Banks grimaced. "Is he always like that?"
Timberwood nodded. "Apparently."
"Great." Banks slouched down onto a nearby couch as Anthony was joined by a tall, thin preppy with neat brown hair and prominent cheekbones.
"Banks, this is Joshua Chiffon," Anthony introduced them. "Josh, meet Banks Brockton."
Josh smiled shyly. "Hi, Banks."
Banks smirked at him. "Chiffon?"
Josh flushed. "It's French, okay? Like Banks is such a great name."
He grinned. "Better than a fabric."
"Now, boys, play nice." Anthony pouted theatrically. "Josh, if Randy can get along with him, you certainly can, too."
Josh threw a questioning look at Timberwood. "You get along with him?"
Timberwood shrugged as he snagged a seat next to Banks. "I guess. We're gonna shoot some hoops."
"Oh."
"Josh doesn't shoot hoops," Timberwood confided, leaning slightly toward Banks. "He'd rather hang out in the music room playing 'Tiptoe Through the Tulips' on the piano."
"I will have you know that I have never in my life played 'Tiptoe Through the Tulips,'" Josh retorted with mock-outrage.
Before he knew it, Banks had opened his mouth and begun singing the song in a perfect imitation of Tiny Tim's freakishly high vibrating falsetto.
The other three boys stared at him, wide-eyed, for a split second before they all burst into hysterical laughter. Banks felt himself beginning to smile. Maybe Deerfield Academy wouldn't be so bad, after all.

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS
11 – 13th November 2006 - Findhorn Ecovillage & Moray College UHI
Climate change and declining oil production are two of the main threats we must
now boldly and creatively face. This event, marking the launch of CIFAL Findhorn -
the first UN Training Centre in Northern Europe - will offer a comprehensive
introduction to renewable energy technologies; an outline of the basic principles of
solar electricity, solar water heating, wind power, micro-hydro, biomass and other
options and their application in urban and rural environments; a learning
environment to explore how to achieve the right balance between waste
minimisation and energy use.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIFAL

Quote:
The CIFAL Network, which is comprised of several associated CIFAL Centres, forms a key part of the work of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)'s Decentralized Cooperation Programme (DCP). This programme provides trainings aimed at implementing international conventions and achieving the UN's Millennium Development Goals.

The acronym CIFAL signifies "International Training Centre for Local Authorities/Actors" (Centre International de Formation des Autorités/Acteurs Locaux). Each CIFAL Centre is a hub for capacity building and knowledge sharing between local and regional authorities, national governments, international organisations, the private sector and civil society. The main objective of these training activities is to enhance local public services and achieve sustainable urbanisation, especially through the activities of local authorities.

The first CIFAL Centre was inaugurated in 2000. Two years later, at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg the DCP launched a new partnership initiative called: "Reinforcement of Local Capacities and Training for Sustainable Urbanization: a Public-Private Partnership" which set out the framework for future centres. Among the partners that jointly developed and presented this initiative were UN-HABITAT, the World Association of Cities and Local Authorities Coordination, the Global Ecovillage Network, and Veolia Environment.

In 2003 three further CIFAL Centres were launched. There are currently (2006) twelve such centres world-wide in Atlanta (USA), Barcelona & Bilbao (Spain), Curitiba (Brazil), Findhorn (Scotland) Lyon (France), Durban (South Africa), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), P?ock (Poland), Shanghai (China) and Tallinn (Estonia).

To complement the training sessions the CIFALWEB, an online tool for knowledge sharing and project follow-up, has been created. This is an electronic platform which aims to support the partners in decision-making and the exchange of best practices.

PostPosted: Sun Aug 31, 2008 12:15 am    Post subject: The FF: a Modern Day Animal Farm Reply with quote

I know the FF very well, having lived near it for several years as well as being associated with it at a distance. In the introductory videos, one of the FF's policemen, Richard, the guy who does the talking and shows people around, mentions that "the real antagonists have either died off or gone away". I would be one of those in the second category.

It's a long story but basically the place was originally known as the Findhorn Community and adopted the name Foundation when it started to go commercial around 1986, the year the commercial wing, New Findhorn Directions, was founded.

The place was founded in 1962 and for the first decade or so the founder members, Eileen and Peter Caddy, ran things more or less their way. Then came the well-heeled Vietnam draft-dodgers from the US who introduced a completely different cultural tone to the place. Finally, Peter Caddy, who until then had run the place as if he was still an RAF squadron-leader with trenches being dug, regular runs along the beach and skinny dipping in the sea on New Year's Day, was given his marching orders. The Yanks took over.

The place retained its eccentricities. One story is that, before wiring-up the place they used pendulum dowsers 'to identify leylines in order to tap into nature's electricity.' Once the wiring had been done it was discovered that constant overloads were burning-up the thin wires that had been laid! The entire job had to be repeated using proper cables. The community was considered by its RAF neighbours next door to be a bunch of 'harmless eccentrics.'

It was a fairly apt description ... in the early years.

But in 1986 the management of the commercial wing, NFD, started to get heavy with private caravan and chalet owners on its land, putting unbearable pressure on them to sell out at a pittance so that the new 'Ecohouses' --£300 thousand and upwards to buy-- could be built. The NFD had a distinct tinge of mafia bullying about it. Senior community members, little old ladies some in their eighties, were bullied by NFD into selling their chalets.

Whereas before the place could be described to be a meeting-place for 'harmless eccentrics' --evidently the label given it by the government spooks-- after it went commercial it began to develop a really insidious character. As the place became commercialised it lost its old community spirit and became a cold, heartless place.

A major aspect of exploitation by the NFD management concerned the renting of sub-standard caravans to the unemployed, the incapacitated and single parents at extortionate rents. This provided the NFD with a large and regular annual income.

Whilst the Foundation was more than happy to milk the public purse in this manner it resented the stigma it felt was attached to the large number of 'undesirables' which it found itself hosting 'on the other side of the tracks.' During the early 'nineties the NFD management found itself constantly at loggerheads with a community within a community whose existence it resented but which it desperately needed for revenue.

Rumours abounded that the core management who ran the place were using the occult not only to attract money but to control the minds and behaviour of people. It was widely believed that the Community's library secretly held the entire collection of Alistair Crowley's books on the occult and that these were only available to the select few. While I must point out that these were only rumours my experience of the manner in which the FF was run tended to confirm the likelihood that cult-behaviour was being quietly promoted and that negative occult practices were being used, at least by some individuals in positions of power.

More humorously, I was once told by a FF-watcher that he wouldn't mind them so much "if only they weren't so bloody solemn about everything, turning life into a funeral"!

With the development of the commercial wing came a new generation of community members whose attitudes had very little to do with spirituality and everything to do with crass materialism. All the old spiritual values that the founding Caddys had tried to instil in the place were abandoned one-by-one and replaced with brazen Thatcherism.

Just before Peter Caddy was killed in a motor accident in Germany in the early 'nineties I remember him making a final visit to the FF where it was widely believed that he had had one helluva row with the Management about how they were running things. It wasn't only Caddy who fell out with them. Several old Findhorn hands, many of them on the international lecture circuit, denounced the new materialism that had taken over the place.

One of these celebs, Caroline Myss, had a major article published in the FF's magazine, One Earth, in which she derided the new attitudes and named individuals. Not long after, One Earth was shut down as being 'economically unviable'.

I remember the change very well. It was as if a darkness had fallen over the place. These were no longer harmless eccentrics . The place was being managed and led by opportunists who had carefully cultivated support in high places. The FF could do no wrong, especially at local government level where they attracted every grant that was going. Corruption attracts corruption.

The place had become a living replica of Animal Farm with a couple of hundred, mostly well-intentioned community members working very hard for either a pittance of a wage or guests actually paying to work there, and a small select minority who ran the place secretively and milked the funds for their own purposes when necessary.

While it was commonly put about that no psychtropic substances were allowed on the FF's premises in practice there were those who indulged, including those in the management. As usual there were two laws, one for the proles and another for the leaders. Animal Farm to a tee.

The message must have gone out to the world that all was not well for even Prince Charles, who had been widely advertised as a conference guest, had a change of heart and never turned-up! That was in the mid-'nineties. The FF has, I believe, remained a major stopping-off point for speakers touring the international New Age conference circuit with regular, twice-yearly conferences bringing in 'spiritual tourists' from all over the world fooled by the fakery of its 'prestigious' brand name.

Since those days I have had had no contact with the FF. But I don't think it has changed very much, only become more staid and geriatric in its materialist ways. It constantly astounds me that even now the place continues to attract interest and tourists. But then, there're always suckers if you know where and how to find them.

Excellent post from caz. the findhorn lot are anti-democratic, believing in the ruling elites so-called chanelling of higher(?? more like lower) spiritual forces as a means of reaching decisions. All their courses are extremely expensive, and if you question the cost, they will accuse you of suffering from poverty conciousness!!! Me thinks the shoe is on the other foot - ie they suffer from greedy conciousness! You will hear such nonsense alot in the so called new age movement, that money is an exchange of energy, but it sems to be the only form of energy they wish to exchange in their favour! Yet not surprisingly, they dont see the act of giving or generosity, as a form of energy exchange. This attitude shows them up for what they are - captains of new age capitalism more like it!
A sociologist wrote a very good critical book on findhorn. Tony can you remember the author?
