The original stories mentioned the plague which is completely different to smallpox
I'm not sure what Nick's point of the plague being'non-human' is
It is associated with the bacteria Pasteurella Pestis and in its pneumonic form is transmissable without the intervention of rats and fleas, ie airborne.
It's not very good as a bioweapon in its original state but could no doubt be bioengineered to be more useful
