1.1m people are dependent on this aid to survive.
A 10 million pound (13.5 million dollar) loss in donations has been estimated due to the BBC broadcasting ban. (Press TV)
Institutional racism at the BBC exposed for all to see. An interesting way to flush out the ZioNazis inside the corporation. Let's see who dares to defend this particular indefensible.

BBC slammed for refusing to air Gaza appeal
The Associated Press
Published: January 24, 2009

LONDON: British government ministers on Saturday criticized the BBC for refusing to show a charity fundraising appeal for Palestinians in the war-hit Gaza strip.

The national broadcaster said it had rejected the ad because showing it might harm the BBC's reputation for impartiality and because it could not be sure humanitarian aid would reach the needy in the chaotic territory.

Britain's main private broadcasters also turned down the ad.

International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander said the BBC had made the wrong decision. He called on the BBC to reconsider, "to recognize the immense human suffering and to address the concern which I think otherwise may develop that somehow the suffering of people in Gaza is not taken as seriously as the suffering of people in other conflicts."

Health minister Ben Bradshaw called the BBC's decision inexplicable and accused the publicly funded broadcaster of being cowed by the Israeli government.

"I am afraid the BBC has to stand up to the Israeli authorities occasionally," Bradshaw said.

The BBC has given free air time to previous appeals by the Disasters Emergency Committee, an umbrella for groups including the Red Cross, Oxfam and Save the Children. The appeals have raised millions of pounds (dollars) for victims of war and natural disaster in Congo, Myanmar and elsewhere.

BBC director-general Mark Thompson said the Gaza crisis was "an ongoing and highly controversial news story." He said the BBC had decided "that to broadcast a free-standing appeal, no matter how carefully couched, ran the risk of calling into question the public's confidence in the BBC's impartiality in its coverage of the story as a whole."

Demonstrators planned to gather outside a BBC building in central London Saturday to protest Israel's assault on the Palestinian territory. Almost 1,300 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed during the three-week onslaught that began Dec. 27......

URGENT REQUEST TO ALL STOP THE WAR'S SUPPORTERS
GOVERNMENT COMPLAINS TO BBC FOR BLOCKING GAZA APPEAL
JOIN THE GOVERNMENT'S PROTEST: COMPLAIN NOW TO THE BBC

Stop the War understands that the government has contacted the
BBC to complain about its decision to refuse the broadcasting
of a humanitarian appeal for Gaza.

The BBC's decision will prevent the raising of millions of
pounds in emergency aid being sent to Gaza. Stop the War is
demanding that the exchange between the government and the BBC
be made public immediately.

The BBC says it is blocking the emergency appeal "to avoid any
risk of compromising public confidence in the BBC's
"impartiality", as if this has anything to do with
humanitarian aid for a devastated people. Either they need the
aid or they do not.

This is the first time in the 48 years of similar national
appeals for humanitarian aid that a broadcast has been
refused. It is estimated that £10 million of urgently required
aid will not now be sent to help Palestinians in Gaza, living
in catastrophic conditions.

"This is a betrayal of the BBC's obligation to be a public
service," said Tony Benn, President of Stop the War. "To deny
the help that the aid agencies and the UN need is
incomprehensible."

It is imperative that the BBC responds to the government's
complaint and reverses its decision to refuse this broadcast.
If it does not, we will see people in Gaza continue to suffer
due to being denied emergency relief because of BBC
"impartiality" .

Stop the War urges all its supporters to complain to the BBC.
We must mobilise all the pressure we can to get the BBC to
reverse its decision.

STOP THE BBC BLOCKING GAZA AID APPEAL

There is now massive pressure on the BBC to reverse its
decision to block an aid for Gaza appeal, with government
ministers joining the campaign to make the BBC reverse its
decision.

Tony Benn, many MPs and celebrities and thousands of
protestors will deliver a letter (see below) to the BBC today
demanding that the BBC reverse what government Health Minister
Ben Bradshaw calls its "inexplicable decision" to refuse a
broadcast for an emergency appeal to raise desperately needed
aid for Gaza. Bradshaw says the reasons the BBC gave are
"completely feeble".
(See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7848614.stm)

Tony Benn, President of Stop the War, says, "To deny the help
that the aid agencies and the UN need at this moment in time
is incomprehensible. I appeal to the chairman of the BBC Trust
to intervene to reverse this decision to save the lives of
those who are now in acute danger of dying through a lack of
food, fuel, water and medical supplies."

WHAT YOU CAN DO
* Join the protest at the BBC today 24 January at 1.30pm, when
we will be assembling for our LIFT THE GAZA BLOCKADE

BBC left isolated over Gaza appeal blackout
http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_a nd_radio/article5581346.ece

As a ex BBC reporter myself I am utterly disgusted by the BBC's decision to bow to the pressure of IDF war criminals and prevent the showing of the Humnanitarian aid appeal for Gaza on Monday.

I demand the decision be reversed and a full explanation made public, heads must roll for this criminal conspiracy by what is supposed to be an accountable public corporation.

Zionist bias at the BBc has become the story, everywhere BUT on the BBC today. This is the best opportunity yet to identify ZioNazi war crime collaberators inside the BBC. And to cancel your licence fee.

Crisis at BBC escalates as 11,000 complain over refusal to broadcast Gaza appeal

By Kirsty Walker and Liz Thomas
Last updated at 5:56 PM on 25th January 2009
The BBC is facing an escalating crisis after it was lambasted by a powerful coalition of politicians, charities and religious leaders over its refusal to screen an aid appeal for Gaza.
The corporation revealed it had been inundated with 11,000 complaints after becoming the only major British broadcaster to not to transmit the plea for help for victims of the conflict.
In a further sign of mounting public anger, thousands of protesters demonstrated outside the BBC's headquarters in London yesterday.
More than 50 MPs from across the political spectrum have also joined forces to back an emergency Commons motion calling on the BBC to screen the appeal..........

Sky is still considering its position”.

BBC Glasgow Offices Occupied By Gaza Protestors http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/01/25/world/main4752239.shtml
Broadcaster Refused To Air Plea For Aid To Palestinians, Fearing Charges Of Impartiality
LONDON, Jan. 25, 2009

(CBS/AP) Members of a British anti-war group occupied the Glasgow offices of the BBC on Sunday, saying they would stay in the building until the national broadcaster agrees to air a charity fundraising appeal for Palestinians in the Gaza strip.
The occupation followed criticism from lawmakers and religious leaders who said the BBC's decision not to air an advertisement from the Disasters Emergency Committee - a group of charities that includes the Red Cross, Oxfam, and Save the Children - was wrong.
The comments by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, and another senior church leader seemed likely to add more pressure on the broadcaster, which has rejected the advertisement because of concerns that showing it might harm its reputation for impartiality, and because it couldn't be sure the money raised would reach those in need in the chaotic Palestinian territory
"My feeling is that the BBC should broadcast an appeal," Williams said.
Mark Thompson, the BBC director-general, remained adamant against the showing the advertisement. His comments came in a blog posting on the BBC Web site.
"Gaza remains a major ongoing news story, in which humanitarian issues - the suffering and distress of civilians and combatants on both sides of the conflict, the debate about who is responsible for causing it and what should be done about it - are both at the heart of the story and contentious."
John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, also urged the BBC to reconsider its decision.
"In the end, it's not a question of impartiality, it's a question of those who have been made destitute, those who need food, those who need medicine, those who need help," he told the BBC. "That's all it is."
Stop the War said it had about 100 people in the foyer of the BBC's Glasgow offices. Strathclyde Police put the number of protesters at about 50, and said the protest was orderly and there had been no arrests. The BBC would not comment on the demonstration.
"We want the BBC to show the Gaza appeal because we believe that the lives of people in Gaza are as important as those in every other part of the world," Penny Howard, one of the protesters, told the AP in a telephone interview from the building. "We remain hopeful. And I think the BBC is coming under increasing pressure."
Other British broadcasters, including Channel 4, ITV, and Five have said they will show the advertisement. Sky said it had yet to decide.
British lawmaker Richard Burden said Sunday that more than 50 of his colleagues are backing a parliamentary petition urging the BBC to run the ad. It is to be introduced in the House of Commons on Monday.
The BBC has previously given airtime to the Disasters Emergency Committee. Appeals have raised millions for people affected by war and natural disaster in Congo, Myanmar and elsewhere.

BBC's TV detector vans to remain a state secret

Although most detection is done by database the Beeb still claims to maintain a fleet of vans which can tell if a particular address contains a TV. If you buy or rent a TV or buy a PC tuner card in the UK your address is passed onto TV Licensing. The BBC maintains a database of 29 million residential and business addresses which it can check for up-to-date licences. If there is no response to letters an "enquiry officer" is sent to the address. If householders refuse them access - which is quite legal - then a detector van will be sent.

Send the lot of them to The Tower! (I'll pay the license fee just to watch that!)

It has occured to me that what the BBC uniquely (out of the other broadcasters) is at risk of is being sued for breaching its Charter obligations if it goes ahead with the broadcast. Whether it is the BBC's own over-cautious lawyers that have warned them of this, or that "interested group/s" may have actually threatened to bring such an action, who can say?

EMERGENCY BBC PROTEST
MONDAY 26 JANUARY, 5.00PM
BBC BROADCASTING HOUSE,
PORTLAND PLACE, LONDON W1A 1AA
COLLECTIVE RETURN OF BBC TV LICENSES

Stop the War is organising a mass return of TV licenses to the
BBC for those incensed by the continuing refusal of the BBC to
broadcast and emergency appeal for Gaza.

The fact that other channels including Channel 4, ITV and
Channel 5 are showing the appeal tonight shows how isolated
and extreme the BBC is on this issue.

For those living in London there will be a collective return
of BBC TV licenses on Monday 26 January, at 5.30pm, at BBC
Broadcasting House, Portland Place, W1A 1AA. If you live in
London and want to register your disgust at the BBC
management's behaviour, do join us, if you can.

We are asking local Stop the War groups outside London, which
have a BBC office in their area, to organise similar license
return events, notifying the local media beforehand.

A number of our supporters have informed us that they have
written to the BBC saying they have cancelled their direct
debit for their TV license. If you are planning to do the
same, please inform Stop the War at office@stopwar.org.uk.

The BBC said that by yesterday they had received over 11,000
complaints. That figure is bound to be far higher by now,
given how there is now virtually unanimous agreement across
the full spectrum of opinion in Britain that the BBC must
reverse its disgraceful decision. Reports say that the vast
majority of BBC staff are outraged by the blocking of the Gaza
appeal. We need to do all we can to increase the pressure on
the BBC management.

The quintessentially impartial, Rupert Murdoch's Sky News, has now joined the BBC in deciding not to air the DEC appeal for Gaza, because, they are concerned about their, erm, impartiality....

Stop laughing !

You really should listen to this morning's, BBC Radio 4 Today prog, where John Humphrys made his boss, the BBC DG, Mark Thompson, look like the pecksniffian arse, he really is:

Worth my licence fee alone.

Quite splendiferous !

Enjoy !

You might also care to consider the BBC's stance on the DEC appeal for Chad and Darfur, back in those heady days of May 2007.

And consider the awful dilemna back then facing the BBC DG, Mark Thompson, 3 years into his job.

Mark Thompson's silence, back then on issues of impartiality over some African punch up, was, well, deafening.....

Crisis appeal for Darfur region

UK charities have launched an emergency appeal to save lives in Sudan's Darfur region and neighbouring countries.

Films starring actress Joanna Lumley and journalist Feargal Keane are being shown on ITV and the BBC on Thursday.

And a telephone campaign, manned by volunteers including TV presenter Claudia Winkleman, will take pledges.

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) says 4.5m people are affected by the conflict in the region while looming rain threatens to bring further misery.

DEC head Brendan Gormley said: "We are seeing one of the greatest concentrations of human suffering right now in Darfur and Chad".

Some 200,000 people have died in Darfur since a rebellion began in 2003.

Pro-government Arab militias have been accused of widespread atrocities, such as mass killings, rape and looting black African villages.

Access is already severely hampered by conflict and the rains will make it much harder for us - Brendan Gormley

The DEC, which represents 13 aid agencies, says the start of the rainy season brings the risk of conditions such as diarrhoea and malaria which threaten children, pregnant women and the elderly in particular.

It says malnutrition levels are already rising in some areas and "vital help" is needed to respond to a rapidly-growing crisis.

The DEC said aid agencies also needed to bolster life-saving food and medicine stocks before the rains hit at any time in the next four weeks.

The money raised by the appeal, which has the backing of BBC newsreader Natasha Kaplinksky, will help provide shelter, clean water, sanitation and emergency food.

It will also help medical teams to provide emergency care and buy items such as water buckets and blankets.

Access 'hampered'

Mr Gormley said: "The money raised by the British public in 2004 saved thousands of lives and we desperately need your help again.

"We have been keeping people alive but access is already severely hampered by conflict and the rains will make it much harder for us to respond if we don't act now.

He said the fact the charities had come together to appeal showed the "severity of the situation".

"Charities are working tirelessly in the region. With your help, they can literally save thousands more lives. We need to act urgently - please do give generously."

Sudan's Border Intelligence Guards
Sudan's army is accused of backing Arab militias in Darfur

International Development Secretary Hilary Benn welcomed the appeal's launch and said the government would do all it could to try and bring the conflict to an end.

He added: "The situation in Darfur is appalling and relief agencies are doing vital work in very testing circumstances, especially as the area affected grows and the number of people needing help increases."

The DEC said violence in the region was escalating and many villages were "burnt out shells".

The conflict has left two-thirds of the population in Darfur dependent on aid, it said.

Rebel group took up arms in 2003, accusing Sudan's central government of ignoring the region.

Sudan denies charges that it then mobilised Arab militias, known as the Janjaweed, to punish Darfur's civilians.

The US says a genocide is being committed in Darfur but Sudan says the scale of the suffering has been exaggerated.

The violence has spilled over the border into Chad, which has a similar ethnic make-up to Darfur, and the Central African Republic.

Unions condemn the collaberators.

Quote:
The leaders of the two biggest unions representing broadcasting workers have condemned the BBC and Sky's decision not to broadcast a charity appeal for humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Jeremy Dear, General Secretary of the National Union of Journalists, and Gerry Morrisey, General Secretary of the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematograph, and Theatre Union, have called the ban "wrong".
They have written to the BBC and Sky asking them to reconsider.
The national executives of both unions voted at the weekend to oppose the BBC's refusal to show the appeal.

Stars vow to shun BBC for refusing to broadcast Gaza appeal

Quote:
Actress Samantha Morton led a string of celebrities who criticised the BBC’s decision at a London fund raiser for the British aid agency Medical Aid for Palestinians last night.
The 31-year-old Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee said she would never work for the BBC again if the corporation failed to show a charity appeal for money for aid for Gaza.
Morton said she was embarrassed to earn money from a corporation that would take such an 'horrific' and 'disgusting' decision.
Comedian Bill Bailey added that the corporation was showing “moral cowardice” and was “hopelessly out of touch”.

Wot, no support from Natasha Kaplinksky and no hosting from Claudia Winkleman ?

The DEC Appeal for Gaza Video, as shown by ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, but not Sky nor our compulsorily funded, on pain of imprisonment, BBC.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/video/2009/jan/26/dec-gaza-appeal

In the interests of the oxymoronic "journalistic fairness" and in case I am accused of breaching my self imposed injunction to uphold impartiality, the Director General of the BBC, Mark Thompson's blog, which, currently, has the Gaza fudge atop:

BBC DG wrote:
BBC and the Gaza appeal

It's not often as editor-in-chief I use our 'editors' blog' to highlight a BBC issue, but with strong views about our decision not to broadcast a Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for Gaza, I wanted to write directly and explain our thinking.

When there is a major humanitarian crisis, the DEC - which is a group of major British charities - comes together and, if it believes various criteria are met and a major public appeal is justified, asks the BBC and other broadcasters to broadcast an appeal. We usually - though not always - accede to the DEC's request and as a result have broadcast many DEC appeals over the years.

A few days ago, the DEC approached us about an appeal for Gaza and, after very careful reflection and consultation inside and outside the BBC, we decided that in this case we should not broadcast the appeal. One reason was a concern about whether aid raised by the appeal could actually be delivered on the ground. You will understand that one of the factors we have to look at is the practicality of the aid, which the public are being asked to fund, getting through. In the case of the Burma cyclone, for instance, it was only when we judged that there was a good chance of the aid getting to the people who needed it most that we agreed to broadcast the appeal. Clearly, there have been considerable logistical difficulties in delivering aid into Gaza. However some progress has already been made and the situation could well improve in the coming days. If it does, this reason for declining to broadcast the appeal will no longer be relevant.

But there is a second more fundamental reason why we decided that we should not broadcast the appeal at present. This is because Gaza remains a major ongoing news story, in which humanitarian issues - the suffering and distress of civilians and combatants on both sides of the conflict, the debate about who is responsible for causing it and what should be done about it - are both at the heart of the story and contentious. We have and will continue to cover the human side of the conflict in Gaza extensively across our news services where we can place all of the issues in context in an objective and balanced way. After looking at all of the circumstances, and in particular after seeking advice from senior leaders in BBC Journalism, we concluded that we could not broadcast a free-standing appeal, no matter how carefully constructed, without running the risk of reducing public confidence in the BBC's impartiality in its wider coverage of the story. Inevitably an appeal would use pictures which are the same or similar to those we would be using in our news programmes but would do so with the objective of encouraging public donations. The danger for the BBC is that this could be interpreted as taking a political stance on an ongoing story. When we have turned down DEC appeals in the past on impartiality grounds it has been because of this risk of giving the public the impression that the BBC was taking sides in an ongoing conflict.

However, BBC News and the BBC as a whole takes its responsibility to report the human consequences of situations like Gaza very seriously and I believe our record in doing it with compassion as well as objectivity is unrivalled. Putting this decision aside, we also have a very strong track-record in supporting DEC appeals and more broadly, through BBC Children In Need, Comic Relief and our many other appeals, in using the BBC's airwaves to achieve positive humanitarian and charitable goals. This is an important part of what it is to be a public service broadcaster. It is sometimes not a comfortable place to be, but we have a duty to ensure that nothing risks undermining our impartiality. It is to protect that impartiality that we have made this difficult decision.

Finally, it is important to remember that our decision does not prevent the DEC continuing with their appeal for donations and people are able to contribute should they choose to.

Wot, like, Jonathan Ross, £16 million a year, serial TV abuser, couldn't do a non-contentious prog about the non-contentious Darfur / Chad / Myanmar / Gaza catastrophe ?

Mark Thompson wrote:

The intense lobbying from the Labour Friends of Sudan and the Conservative Friends of Sudan and the Liberal Democrat Friends of Sudan back in 2007, when you did, in fact sanction the Darfur / Chad DEC Appeal, was, well, erm, missing.

Was it ?

Mark Thompson wrote:

Oh thanks.

Patronising, pompous and clearly, partial...

Maybe, as a compromise, the BBC could do a Celebrity Strictly Come Genocide On Ice, live from Gaza, with all the proceeds going to supplement Mark Thompson's psychotherapy after the phone lines have been closed ?

It's our toob Thommo. Remember. We pay for it. We pay for you.

If you had a single, non-partial, Kosher bone in your body you would resign.

Then, I'd be happy to fund your compulsory viewing of the Israeli War Crimes against the people who have been squeezed into Gaza.

You are one disgusting human being.

I've just logged the following complaint:

Quote:
I wish to complain about the manner in which BBC management has been evasive and obstructive in recent BBC interviews regarding the Gaza charities appeal.

This has not only thrown the BBC's reputation into disrepute, but it has undermined the very job that BBC interviewers have been expected to carry out in interviewing politicians who have been behaving in a similarly disreputable manner.

BBC management should be given a last chance to giving plain honest answers to simple questions. If they fail to do so, or if they make silly excuses, they should regard their positions as untenable.

Yet the Beeb never fails to bang on about those 'dreadful' Hamas rockets.

This whole 'air or not to air' is just meaningless looking up from a polluted Gazan gutter.

Like the alchemical wedding, we seem to slide so effortlessly between farce and the blackest of horror.

Tony's point of Zionist exposure within the BBC could so easily be extended to the puppet masters behind the Red Shield too...

So strange there is yet no concerted effort...

there was a reasonably good documentary by jon snow titled 'gaza unseen' if anyone managed to tape it id like a copy. jon snow raised questions as to why most mainstream british and for that matter, american broadcasters dont show the full horror of the bombing of gaza. he was given the ridiculous reply by the bbc that such images ( of many men women and children dead, limbs and eyes missing, or badly burnt, or crushed when run over by israeli tanks etc) would be offensive or too upsetting!! this was the same lame excuse given to why we couldnt be allowed to see the real devasting effects of the invasion of iraq!! ok so dont show these images before the 9 oclock deadline, but people need to know the truth the reality on the ground. during the vietnam war we got to see such images. the real reason they dont want to broadcast them is because of not wanting to upset the zionists.
also covered by jon snow was how the israeli's prevented news broadcasters from access to gaza it self, and how as a result, there was no way to check the accuracy or not of the zionist view. jon snow investigated how the zionists lied about the boming of a UN school. the israel spokesman said that associated press and new york times sources had uncovered witnessess that hamas was operating from within the school - this was widely broadcast by the mainstream british media, but jon snow showed this to be a lie! in fact the witnessess had reported that hamas rockets had been fired a few streets away from the school.

It was on Channel 4, Thursday 22nd January 2009.

Quote:
Series 1 | Unseen Gaza
Jon Snow

Is what has been presented on our screens and in our papers a true reflection of events on the ground in Gaza? And how do these reports differ to those aired in other countries?

With reporters unable to enter Gaza, attempted media manipulation from both sides and strict regulations governing what images that can be shown on British TV, Jon Snow asks a range of journalists from at home and abroad about the challenges of getting the full story.

Featuring images that haven't before been aired on mainstream television, Jon also examines the difference between the coverage at home and that in the US, Europe and the Middle East. He compares the coverage available on terrestrial channels with satellite TV and the internet and investigates the extent to which some British Muslims are by-passing the mainstream British media and looking elsewhere for their information.

To what extent does the choice of news outlet affect opinion of the conflict?

[quote="Whitehall_Bin_Men"]BBC's TV detector vans to remain a state secret

Quote:
Although most detection is done by database the Beeb still claims to maintain a fleet of vans which can tell if a particular address contains a TV. If you buy or rent a TV or buy a PC tuner card in the UK your address is passed onto TV Licensing. The BBC maintains a database of 29 million residential and business addresses which it can check for up-to-date licences. If there is no response to letters an "enquiry officer" is sent to the address. If householders refuse them access - which is quite legal - then a detector van will be sent.

Bit spooky this. I was taking a TV set given to me by a friend into my late fathers unoccupied house just as the postman was delivering a reminder from TV licensing that i didnt have a TV licence for that address and that they would call some time. The offence is for actually using the TV not owning it so they actually have to catch you using it. I have the same hassle at my own home where i dont have a license because i dont use the TV set to watch TV progs only to play dvd and vids. The last time i bought a tv from asda the sales lads were ok about me not giving my name and address for the Database so perhaps its not law to give your name and address. probably got it recorded anyway if you pay with plastic.

Theres enough tripe on the internet without having to watch TV

No, it's certainly not! Pay cash. I had a similar experience last time I was in Blighted. I gave the licence goon a tour around the house - look, NO aerial. He still wasn't convinced. Amazing what subtle coercion and the hard eye can achieve amongst the timid and law-abiding, though.

The BBC sure have a cheek to ask us to pay the equivalent of the cost of a new tv set every year when they wont broadcast the DEC appeal for Gaza, and they operate censorship when showing the footage of the full effects of bombings upon the citizens of Gaza, Iraq during the invasion of Iraq, and did little to give air space to the voice of the South Ossetians in the recent conflict between them and Georgia. I urge everyone to complain about all of these blatant biases to the BBC and your MP and write in to newspapers as well. It would be good if people are able to do so, could stop paying the licence fee as a protest against such bias.

Dear anonymous person in the BBC Complaints department,

You have clearly not read the text of my recent complaint. I did not express disappointment at your decision not to broadcast an appeal by the Disasters Emergency Committee to raise funds for Gaza; that is a separate issue. What I complained about was the behaviour of BBC management in the way they handled the issue, and in so doing undermined their own staff.

Not only have you evaded the complaint actually made, but you have also laid down a condition that your response be confidential.

Please now explain to me on what grounds you claim your response to be confidential.

Speechless in Hertfordshire . . . found this . . .

The Daily Netanyahu Torygraph wrote:
Al-Qaeda would blow up ‘Christ’s burial site’ says Israeli election favourite Netanyahu

Benjamin Netanyahu, the favourite to win next month’s Israeli general election, yesterday predicted al-Qaeda would blow up the purported burial place of Jesus Christ, if the country relinquished control of Jerusalem.

Mr Netanyahu, who claimed to have forecast the destruction of the Twin Towers by Islamic extremists in 1995, said terrorists would target the Church of the Holy Sepulchre - Christianity’s holiest site.

“Radical Islam is willing and will want to attack the symbolic heart of the Christian religion,” he said. “This will incur a chain reaction we can’t even envision. We will witness an escalation of religious conflict above and beyond the regional conflict we have now.”

The leader of the Right-wing Likud opposition recalled that he had warned Islamic terrorists would detonate a nuclear device in the Manhattan World Trade Centre complex in a 1995 book, six years before the September 11 attacks.

He claimed that the destruction of the Holy Sepulchre would trigger a clash between religions, much greater than the “regional conflict” that currently wracks the Holy Land.

Israel annexed Jerusalem after the 1967 war and has overseen a massive expansion of the city’s Jewish population.

The church on the Hill of Calvary is the site of the death and resurrection of Jesus and the Holy Sepulchre, according to the New Testament. It attracts tens of thousands of pilgrims each year and is a spiritual focal point for all the Roman and Eastern rite churches in the city.

Any discussion of returning part of Jerusalem to the Palestinians, who also claim it as their capital provokes sharp divisions in Israeli politics. The February elections were called after Tzipi Livni, the foreign minister and new leader of the Kadima party, failed to form a government to replace outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert because she would not rule out negotiations on the division of Jerusalem.

Mr Netanyahu, who boasts of closing down Palestinian offices in Jerusalem and expanding the number of Jewish building projects during previous terms in government, said Likud would not discuss sovereignty over Jerusalem.

But he forecast that the most radical groups among Israel would gain a foothold to wage attacks on Israel. He said: “If we move out of even one piece of Jerusalem, Hamas moves in, Iran would have a base to attack us in the heart of our capital.”

It emerged yesterday that the size of Jewish settlements on the West Bank had grown by 69 per cent in 2008. Activists with Peace Now reported that Israel’s army was quietly promoting the establishment of new settlements, as well as the expansion of existing outposts.

The development appears to violate Israel’s official promises to restrict the unrestrained growth of the settlements.

It is another damaging blow to Tony Blair’s credibility as international envoy to the conflict. Since taking up office Mr Blair has negotiated the dismantlement of just one Israeli army checkpoint but the total number has gone up to 699 from 521.

I conclude that the very loveable Bibi, has severe brain damage and needs all the help that the world's medical community can offer.

OPINION: Boycott the BBC —Terry Lacey

I never came across such a huge political misjudgement as that made by Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC. He must resign or the damage to the Corporation will be cumulative and global

The decision of the British Broadcasting Corporation to refuse to broadcast a humanitarian appeal for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) made of up British NGOs working in the Gaza Strip to help the wounded and homeless of Gaza is one of the most craven acts of political and legal cowardice in the history of British television broadcasting.

In all my years as General Secretary of War on Want, as Chairman of the International Broadcasting Trust, as Patron of the One World Broadcasting Trust, and as a member of the previous Educational Advisory Committee of the Independent Broadcasting Authority, I never came across such a huge political misjudgement as that made by Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC. He must resign or the damage to the Corporation will be cumulative and global.

During the Thatcher years, when War on Want was in a constant battle with the Charity Commission on politics and charity law, there was no parallel to this.

This appeal by the Red Cross, Oxfam, Save the Children, Help the Aged, Christian Aid and World Vision is to raise money for Gaza civilians, especially children.

These are the most professional disaster relief and development agencies in Britain and would not propose an appeal for political effect, but to serve the humanitarian needs of those who have suffered in a war in which 1330 people died and 5,450 were wounded, with the dead including over 400 children, and over 100 women.

The appeal has already been broadcast by Channel 4, ITV and Channel 5. The shots of the destruction of Gaza actually included a voice-over that said, “Today this is not about the rights and wrongs of the conflict. These people simply need your help”.

What has to be done now is quite simple. This is not directly to do with the politics of Israel and Palestine. This is not about the British Government. This is about the BBC.

British taxpayers must demand an end to the television licence as an extra indirect tax in a time of recession. It is unfair on the poor and the unemployed and unjustifiable in support of a publicly backed TV corporation which has become so distant on this matter from the concerns of the public it serves. Unless this is reversed or put right.

This is also an implicitly anti-Muslim and anti-Arab decision. Similar problems did not arise for appeals during earlier conflicts in Central America or Southern Africa. The Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) should take note of this. The London embassies of every Arab and Muslim country should make a report to their governments. Muslim and Arab companies and people worldwide should respond with a boycott of BBC goods and services, until such time as this decision is reversed.

The BBC must offer an alternative if the original opportunity to help these people is lost. Those responsible for this decision must be fired or resign.
