A senior judge has been found dead in the freezing waters of a village stream.

The body of Judge William Everard, 59, was discovered in Fakenham in Norfolk, near the holiday home he owned with his wife.

A spokesman for Norfolk police said the death was being treated as ‘unexplained but not suspicious’.

His body was discovered in the early hours of Sunday.

A former colleague paid tribute to a man who had been at the forefront of prosecuting sexual crimes against children.

James Howlett, who succeeded Judge Everard as head of KCH chambers in Nottingham in 2004, said: ‘The news has been met with complete shock across all the chambers. It has upset the whole legal community.

‘Judge William Everard was a distinguished member and head of these chambers for many years.

‘He was an outstanding criminal lawyer, a good friend and a keen sportsman who enjoyed cricket, hockey and fishing.

‘With his wife, he made a home which was a place of generous hospitality to their many friends, in law and elsewhere.

‘He will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with his wife and family.’

Judge Everard’s wife Christine is an artist who has exhibited landscape, seascape, still life and abstract paintings in a number of Norfolk galleries.

Norfolk police have completed investigations at the scene and are expected to release details of a post-mortem examination this morning.
Snow

The area in Norfolk where the body was found has been experiencing freezing weather conditions

Villagers in the snow-covered community of South Creake expressed their shock at the death.

Parish clerk Stafford Snell said: ‘All I can say is I was very sorry to hear what had happened and obviously the thoughts of the parish council and of the village go to his relatives.’

Judge Everard, who did not have children, had a distinguished career as a barrister and was a Queen’s Counsel specialising in crime before becoming a district judge on the Midland circuit in 2004.

Article did say he was a fisherman. A spot of winter grayling fishing turned nasty. Funny no comment from his wife. She could easily have said her husband had gone out fishing.
Mind you it could be similar to that poor girl on the skiing trip who got lost after leaving the bar and tried to take a shortcut and got stuck in a freezing stream and died.
Early hours of sunday?? Judge been out for a few tipples saturday night , gone for a pee in the stream on way home from pub and fell in. Solved!!

Child abuse death squad on the loose in Norfolk?
There were a lot of criminals would want to see this brave man dead.

Ridiculously jittery local police press officers who would say nothing and not even give their names indicates a Norfolk Constabulary cover-up may already be in full swing.

Quote:
TRIBUTES have been paid to Notts crown court judge Willie Everard who was found dead near his Norfolk home at the weekend.
Judge Everard, who lived at Willoughby-on-the Wolds with his wife Christine, was found collapsed in a stream on Sunday morning.
It is thought he drowned after slipping on the path while making his way home in the dark by torch light. He was 59.
Judge Everard had spent Saturday shooting before joining friends for dinner.
He was a keen sportsman, cricketer, hockey player, fisherman and an excellent shot.
Judge Michael Stokes, QC, Recorder of Nottingham, led tributes to Judge Everard from Nottingham Crown Court.
He said: "One couldn't be in a room where Willie was and fail to notice his presence.
"He was a good friend and colleague and very well known and respected at the Nottingham Bar.
"He was a particularly effective prosecutor. There were few who escaped justice when Willie was prosecuting.
"One or two did when he was defending, however."
Peter Joyce, QC said: "When he was appointed there was universal pleasure in the city and at the Bar.
"We know and those on the bench listening will know that the Bar is a very hard taskmaster; a very stern critic of those that go on the bench.
"With Willie the universal opinion was that he wouldn't change, he would stay the same, he would be courteous, kind, he would be fair.
"He didn't change a bit. You got what you saw and what you saw was good."
Judge Everard joined KCH Chambers in Nottingham in 1974, carving out a successful practice as a criminal advocate, prosecuting and defending high profile cases and was at the forefront of prosecuting serious sexual crimes against children.
He became head of chambers in 1996 following Richard Inglis who preceded him to the circuit bench.
James Howlett, who succeeded Judge Everard as head of chambers, said: "Judge Everard was a distinguished member and head of these chambers for many years.
"He was an outstanding criminal lawyer and a good friend.
"With his wife, he made a home which was a place of hospitality to their many friends, in law and elsewhere. He will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with his wife and family."
Judge Everard was educated at Repton School in Derbyshire, becoming head of house.
While still practicing at the Nottingham Bar, he made the national headlines.
A prisoner, Damien Small, leapt from the dock at Nottingham Crown Court making for Judge Hopkin who had just passed a 30-month prison sentence.
Judge Hopkin, a former boxer, rugby tackled the prisoner, promptly sitting on him and saying: "You don't scare me, sonny."
Mr Everard ran to the judge's defence, restraining the prisoner.
"I have never seen Mr Everard move so quickly," commented Judge Hopkin.
The judge, who retired in 2002, said Mr Everard was very kind, a great companion and raconteur.
"He was fit and had a delightful sense of humour. He was always excellent company.
"He was an excellent and fluent advocate, good at defending or prosecuting. He had a great attribute that he was short and to the point."
Mr Everard and his wife enjoyed entertaining at their homes, throwing generous dinner parties which would go on late into the night, fuelled by his endless stories, jokes and good humour.
A plain speaker, he had little time for political correctness.
Details of a funeral and memorial service will be announced later.
