Editorial note:
The compiled information below is complementary to Mike Whitney's "Blue Star Rampage: Israel's dress rehearsal for Lebanon"
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=11722
-------------------
In a video-conference on January 7, Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah said:
Quote: | "What is happening today concerns us all. I know that in Lebanon the eyes of a region are on you. We are all in a sensitive stage in history. I tell you that we do not yet know the magnitude of the plan, the far-reaching effects of the Zionist-American plan and the magnitude of the collaboration. We must all be vigilant at all times as anything is possible." | [1]
Two days later, the head of Hezbollah parliamentary bloc Mohammad Raad warned Israel not to use an incident in which rockets were fired from southern Lebanon into the Israeli settlements as a pretext for sparking a war in Lebanon.
Quote: | "We are prepared to face any foolishness. We have the wisdom to act calmly and we will not be dragged to any act of which we are not convinced. But we will not accept becoming a target for anyone" | [2]
The following quote from a speech delivered by the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert a week before the launch of the Gaza invasion on December 25:
Quote: | "An additional and dangerous concrete threat, one growing more serious, is the existence of an axis stretching from Tehran through Damascus to the Hizbullah in Lebanon and the Hamas in the Gaza Strip." | [3]
These quotes as well as the Jerusalem Post report below corroborate Mike Whitney's analysis. As stated in his article, on January 5 Prime Minister Olmert made the following remark to President of France Nicholas Sarkozy:
Quote: | "In light of our fight against terror – today it's Hamas, tomorrow it will be Hizbullah…" | [4]

[emphasis added]
Preparing for a possible confrontation with Hizbullah [5]
Quote: | To prepare for another possible war with Hizbullah, the IDF has also drawn up operational plans that it believes will succeed in ending the battle - with a clear and decisive victory - in four or five days, not like last time.
[...]
In general terms, the plan consists of two stages. The first: to strike hard at Hizbullah infrastructure from the air, and to hope that this is devastating enough to force Hizbullah to end the war.... The second: to conduct a massive ground attack, probably up to the Litani River, the area where most of Hizbullah's short-range Katyusha rockets are believed to be deployed.
[...]
"In the last war, we made a distinction between Hizbullah targets and Lebanese national targets … Now that Hizbullah is in the government - with veto power in the cabinet - there is no longer a reason to make this distinction, since a Hizbullah attack against Israel is essentially a Lebanese attack against Israel. ... No village will be immune … We will give them about a 12-hour warning, and then strike back" [a senior IDF general told the Post]. |

Barak: Syria-Hezbollah arms deal will prompt Israeli action in Lebanon
Haaretz, 3 February 2009
Quote: | Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Thursday that the transfer of particular weapons systems [i.e. anti-aircraft missiles] from Syria to Hezbollah would obligate Israel to take action in Lebanon.
"There are [weapons] system capable of tipping the status quo in Lebanon and we will need to consider our response should they be transferred […] I do not recommend that Hezbollah try us, the results will be even more painful than one could imagine" he said. |

Israeli forces seize Gaza aid ship
The Israeli navy has captured and diverted a ship from Lebanon carrying more than 60 tonnes of aid to the Gaza Strip.
Al Jazeera's correspondent aboard the Al-Ikhwa (The Brotherhood) ship said the navy first opened fire, then five Israeli soldiers boarded the ship, beating and threatening the passengers.
"They are pointing guns against us - they are kicking us and beating us. They are threatening our lives," Al Jazeera's Salam Khoder said.
Communications with the ship broke off shortly thereafter.
According to the owner of the vessel, the Israelis destroyed its communication equipment and confiscated the phones of those on board.
The Israeli military told Al Jazeera it had captured the Lebanese vessel and taken it to Ashdod, where authorities were examining its cargo. The passengers and crew, meanwhile, were being questioned by police.
Warnings 'disregarded'
In a statement, the Israeli military said it had warned the ship on Wednesday night against entering Gaza's coastal waters.
"During today's morning hours, the cargo ship changed its bearing, and began heading towards the Gaza Strip .... disregarding all warnings made," it said.
The Lebanese president has condemned Israel's seizure of the aid ship [AFP]
Al-Ikhwa, which originally set sail from Cyprus, left the Lebanese port city of Tripoli on Tuesday.
Maan Bashour, an aid co-ordinator for the group End the Blockade of Gaza, said the ship was carrying medical equipment, food supplies and books, toys and milk for small children.
"This ship was searched in Cyprus and in Lebanon," Bashour told Al Jazeera in Beirut, Lebanon. "And we were very eager to let it be searched by Lebanese and Cypriot authorities in order that there be no reason for the Israelis to prevent it from going to Gaza."
Foud Siniora, Lebanon's president, condemned the attack on Al-Ikhwa, emphasising that it was on a humanitarian mission to Gaza.
"It is no surprise for Israel to perpetrate such an action as it has been accustomed to ignoring all international resolutions and values," he said during a speech in Beirut.
"I made a number of necessary phone calls with international parties in order to exert pressures on Israel which is violating laws. I hold Israel responsible for the safety of the ship and passengers. "

Hezbollah on 'high alert' as Israel prepares drill
Press TV, 30 May 2009
As Israel prepares to launch a large-scale military drill, Lebanon's Hezbollah in cooperation with Lebanese Army forces is on high alert along the border.
Unnamed army sources said Saturday that the Lebanese Army has heightened its security measures along the southern border with Israel to repel possible threats during Israel's 'Turning Point 3' military exercise which will last for five days, Al Manar reported Saturday.
In addition to the military patrols, Hezbollah forces will be on full alert "to respond to any possible aggression", according to the report.
The daily quoted the sources as saying that the security measures are taken despite UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon) assurances that the drill would be "defensive in nature".
The exercise will include the Israeli army, Home Front Command, Emergency Economy, Israeli Police, government ministries and local authorities.
Israel's National Emergency Authority Chief, Brig. Gen. (res.) Ze'ev Zuk-Rom, said formerly that the drill is to be held based on the lessons Israel learnt during its war against Hezbollah in the summer of 2006.
Israel which launched the 33-day war to destroy Hezbollah's military power was forced to eventually leave southern Lebanon without achieving any of its objectives.
