I was just wondering if there might be any chance of a live chat link as there is on forums such as RI ( Rigorous intuition).

Not that it gets used much there. On here however I think that might be a different story altogether.

We would of course need to establish a broad set of rules ( speaking in turn for instance, length of time for response, moderators etc)

I do get the distinct impression however that such a feature might surely do us no harm as a community in general ?

Thoughts anyone ?

Good idea - I just want to suggest an IRC channel as an option. I've used PJIRC applets - http://www.pjirc.com/main.php - on a couple of my sites in conjunction with a rented IRC server (it can also be used with free channels elsewhere), and it was the dog's balearics. Peeps with IRC clients can use them, and peeps without could use the site - plus the server doesn't get hammered too much.

Just my tuppence anyway but sounds good Smile

The immediacy of conversation might prove quite valuable here, though finger-tapping speed, brevity, and the tendency for personal stuff between established users to become the mainstream eventually keeps
the usefulness and on-topicallity limited
If users were quite open and discplined in their use it would provide a valuable aid

Thanks dodgy.

I must confess that a lot of the above sounds like Japanese to me, rather like listening to the replies of Gravy, Jay Ref, Jon Ronson and others.

Could you link such a facility to this forum, Satire aside ?

Laughing Oh sorry, I sometimes babble stuff without explaining! Also, I didn't even notice the existing Chat link at the top of the page (d'oh): http://www.nineeleven.co.uk/board/chat.php - that is basically what I was meaning. If you go to that page, a flash object opens up which is like a mini-IRC client.

IRC is a protocol (like http and ftp), but it kind of acts like a chat room, where you can join a channel and chat away with whoever is also in the channel - but you can also do a whole lot more with it. (If you want to know more, visit http://www.irchelp.org/ )

The current setup of the channel that is in the above Chat link is:
Server: irc.icq.com
Channel: #BTC

So it looks like we already have our own IRC channel. Now, if you have an IRC client, such as:
mIRC - shareware
IceChat - freeware which also has good tutorials for installation & connecting to a server on their website
- you can set it as follows by adding a New Server:

Nick - (your username here, eg dodgy)
Server Name - irc.icq.com

Then you can either add #BTC to the Autojoin Channels list, or type /join #BTC in your client.

If you don't have an IRC client, then just use the Chat link above.

Note for the site admins - #BTC looks like it needs to be re-registered with chanserv & all permissions need to be set, I'm getting auto-op'd when joining the channel so it looks like the channel was dropped.

I've just went and registered the channel to stop someone hijacking it - I'll transfer the channel ownership across to someone as soon as I find out who to transfer it to (I've just pm'd ian neal to find out).

scar - just missed you, soz!
