This is to give folk advanced warning of these events: Birmingham Oct 10th, London Oct 11th, Bristol 0ct, 12th 2006 so that folk can book their tickets (if they can afford them)
An evening with Robert Fisk in conversation with Professor Avi Shlaim
This lively seminar will feature Professor Shlaim, Fellow of St Anthony's College and Professor of International Relations at the University of Oxford in discussion with Robert fisk on current issues and world events, with particular reference to the Middle east and Iraq.
Fisk is a veteran war correspondent who has spent the last 23 years reporting from war zones and unearthing truths in the most dangerous places.
Not one to pull any punches, Fisk talks about the growing haterd of the West by millions of Muslims; the West's cynical support for the Middle East's most ruthless dictators; and America's ever more powerful military presence in the world's most dangerous lands, as well as its uncritical, unconditional support for Israel's occupation of Palestinian land.
He is Britain's most highly-decorated foreign correspondent. He has received the British International Journalist of the Year award seven times, most recently in 1995 and 1996.
£35 per ticket.

Apparently, Mr Fisk lives in Beirut, and with the recent escalation of military conflict in Lebanon, he may need to attend to more pressing matters. _________________ In our age there is no such thing as 'keeping out of politics.' From my home, I saw what the ’war on terror’ meant
By Robert Fisk
July Sunday 16th 2006 (15h25) :
All night I heard the jets, whispering high above the Mediterranean. It lasted for hours, little fireflies nthat were watching Beirut, waiting for dawn perhaps, because it was then that they descended.
They came first to the little village of Dweir near Nabatiya in southern Lebanon where an Israeli plane dropped a bomb on to the home of a Shia Muslim cleric.
He was killed. So was his wife. So were eight of his children. One was decapitated. All they could find of a baby was its head and torso which a young villager brandished in fury in front of the cameras. Then the planes visited another home in Dweir and disposed of a family of seven.
It was a brisk start to Day Two of Israel’s latest "war on terror", a conflict that uses some of the same language - and a few of the same lies - as George Bush’s larger "war on terror". For just as we "degraded" Iraq - in 1991 as well as 2003 - so yesterday it was Lebanon’s turn to be "degraded".

I'm reading that at the moment too. It's excellent and deserves reading by all to see the corruption in the world. It is unfortunate there are not more journalists of the calibre in this book. I will warn you though that it is not a happy read. _________________ "We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence of the good people.” Martin Luther King |

A few lines from Robert Fisk's diary in the Independent today (Sunday 23rd July)
".....Then a fax from a Jewish friend in California to tell me that a man called Lee Kaplan - "a columnist for the Israel National News", whatever that is - has condemned me in print for developing a "high-paid speaking career among anti-Semites". Unlike Benjamin Netanyahu and many others I can think of, I never take money for lecturing - ever - but to smear the thousands of ordinary Americans who listen to me as anti-Semites is outrageous......"
So why are tickets 35 GBP per head? |

I think you'd be wiser asking: "What are the overall logistical costs of the presentation - versus - the sum total value of tickets sold?"
I get a bit pissed off when viewing the Independent Online, get a tantalising glimpse of the start of Fisk's articles, then get asked for a quid to read the rest, though, I have to say. |
