Harman was later involved in a European Court of Human Rights case against MI5 after it was revealed by whistleblower Cathy Massiter in 1984 that personal files were held by MI5 on her and another leading member of the NCCL — Patricia Hewitt.[7]

Harman was born at 108 Harley Street and practised and lived there his whole life.[1] His father, Nathaniel, trained as a Baptist minister but gained a double first at Cambridge and became an ophthalmic consultant.[1] His mother was Katherine Chamberlain, a niece of Joseph Chamberlain. Katherine had also qualified as a doctor but devoted herself to her family instead.[1]

Ronald Kidd (Founder)
Born in London, England, the son of surgeon Leonard Joseph Kidd, grandson of doctor Joseph Kidd, and nephew of doctors Percy Kidd and Walter Aubrey Kidd, Ronald Hubert Kidd had a variety of jobs before finding his vocation as a campaigner against injustices in 1930s and 1940s Britain.
In 1934, angered by Police responses to hunger marchers, he founded the Council for Civil Liberty (later the National Council for Civil Liberty, or NCCL, now known as Liberty), which included such figures as E. M. Forster as its President and Clement Attlee, Aneurin Bevan, Havelock Ellis, Aldous Huxley, J. B. Priestley, Bertrand Russell, and H. G. Wells among its vice-presidents.

On 21 October 1949, Huxley wrote to George Orwell, author of Nineteen Eighty-Four, congratulating Orwell on "how fine and how profoundly important the book is." In his letter to Orwell, he predicted that "Within the next generation I believe that the world's leaders will discover that infant conditioning and narco-hypnosis are more efficient, as instruments of government, than clubs and prisons, and that the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience."

Alan Johnson

Born in London, and orphaned at the age of 12 when his mother died, Johnson was then effectively brought up by his older sister when the two were assigned a council flat by their child welfare officer.[1][2] He passed the 11 plus exam and attended Sloane Grammar School in Chelsea and left school at the age of 15.[2] He then stacked shelves at Tesco before becoming a postman at 18. He is interested in music and joined two pop music bands.[2] Johnson joined the Union of Communication Workers, becoming a branch official. He joined the Labour Party in 1971, although he considered himself a Marxist ideologically aligned with the Communist Party of Great Britain.[3]

Bradshaw was selected to contest the marginal parliamentary seat of Exeter at the 1997 General Election after the first choice candidate, John Lloyd, was deselected by the local Labour party on instructions from Labour HQ. The sitting Conservative MP, John Hannam had retired and the Conservatives chose Adrian Rogers to be their candidate. This created a very interesting election campaign, Bradshaw an openly gay man, and Rogers a leading member of the religious right.
