Police have condemned a mob of 200 Asian youths who attacked officers and threw fireworks in Luton.
Riot police were called to Bury Park after youths attacked local police on Sunday. Two people were arrested.
Local officers were there at the request of the Asian community to protect the group from a right wing march, but no protesters turned up.
Ch Supt Andy Frost said he was "extremely disappointed" his officers had been attacked.
He said: "Although this incident was contained within Bury Park it has again put Luton under the spotlight for the wrong reasons.
"The town has enjoyed excellent community relations for a number of years but it seems a small minority has let Luton down."
A police spokeswoman said one person arrested during the disorder had been released and the second was waiting to be questioned....

LONDON — Authorities arrested 90 people after racially charged violence erupted between a group protesting Islamic extremism and counter-demonstrators in the central English city of Birmingham, police said Sunday.
The clashes erupted Saturday when a rally by the English Defense League ran into counter-demonstrators including anti-fascists and youths of South Asian descent, West Midlands Police said.
About 200 people were involved in the clashes in downtown Birmingham, police said.
Television footage showed masked or hooded youths throwing projectiles and running from riot police through the diverse city's downtown area.
Police said the 90 people detained — all males aged 16 to 39 — were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and violent disorder.
It was not immediately clear how many were protesters and how many were counter-demonstrators.
Clashes also erupted last month at a similar demonstration in Birmingham, a diverse city of about 1 million where nearly a third of the population is nonwhite.
The English Defense League blames counter-demonstrators for inciting violence at its rallies. It has planned protest marches in other cities, including one next month in Manchester.

It seems that white people and other non-Muslims are insufficiently violently angry about Muslims, so this anger has to be encouraged.

The African-Caribbean-Muslim clash in Birmingham some years ago has not led to the "race war" some were warning of.

So, even if people do not follow the EDL, they will get fed up of the clashes and blame Muslims. It is also a cover to suppress legitimate protest.

It may be that things are not sufficiently going to plan or are they setting us up now before the depression really starts hitting us?

Ironic that the people calling themselves "English" Defence League would have fought on the side of the Nazis in the Second World War.

I agree that these two groups deserve each other. I think it fair and right that they are allowed to counter protest. What’s the betting EDL turn up with a dozen Israeli flags? Now, while we can all hate any racism from EDL I think it would be brialliant if they did turn up with Israeli flags. Not that it implies they support Israel or that they enjoy support from Jews but if you were disgusted with these terrorists-supporting mobs and their hate speech then wouldn’t you be secretly having a laugh?

Calls have been made for an inquiry into why right-wing protesters were allowed to clash with police in a town for a second time in four months.
There were reportedly 12 arrests as members of the English Defence League (EDL) confronted officers in the West Midlands town of Dudley on Saturday.
Anti-fascist group Unite Against Fascism held a counter-protest against the group, which says it is against Islamic extremism in the UK.
There were violent clashes in April when up to 2,000 members of the EDL rampaged through the town after breaking out of a holding pen.
The EDL said they chose Dudley because there are plans to build a mosque in the town....

Violence flares at EDL protest

Violence broke out and missiles were thrown at police as rival protesters gathered in Leicester for rival demonstrations.
The English Defence League (EDL) and Unite Against Fascism (UAF) were holding protests in Leicester, prompting the city's largest policing operation in 25 years.

Around 1,000 members from each group were expected to descend on the city, police said, although it was not known exactly how many had turned up.

A smoke bomb was thrown from the EDL protesters into police and crowds of press.

Leicestershire Police said: "Officers are dealing with minor disorder among the EDL supporters on Humberstone Gate East. So far a number of protesters have been detained for possible public order offences."

Earlier this week, Home Secretary Theresa May authorised a blanket ban on marches in Leicester, but the groups were still permitted to hold static demonstrations in Humberstone Gate East in the city from 2pm to 3.30pm.

The area was shut down by police, with rival groups placed either side of metal barriers.

Police were using Section 14 of the Public Order Act which meant officers could take action against anyone who protests outside that place and time. They were also using stop and search powers, and were supported by the dog unit, mounted unit and East Midlands Air Support Unit.

At one point a policeman was put into a buggy-style ambulance on a stretcher. Some EDL protesters were also treated by police medics, but it is unclear what their injuries were.

A spokeswoman said: "Crowds remain and continue to protest. Four people have been arrested. One officer has been taken to hospital with a leg injury."
