POLICE were on full alert in Northern Ireland last night after an officer's girlfriend narrowly survived when a bomb blew up her car.
The 38-year-old woman was pulled from her mangled Mazda MX5 but miraculously suffered only minor injuries.
She was reversing out of her drive in Kingsdale Gardens at 7.30am when the bomb went off under the passenger seat.
Her partner usually sits there on the way to work at police HQ in east Belfast.
Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson said it was an "evil attack designed to murder a police officer".
He said the bombers would not succeed in plunging the province back into the dark days of its past.
Dissident republicans were thought to behind the attack and officers were warned to check their cars because of the increased threat.
Last month, the Real IRA exploded a bomb at a policeman's home in Londonderry and a pipe bomb failed to go off at his sister's home.
