While I don't like the idea of software pirates either, this is an example of automatic detection and deliberate service refusal which gives a creepy feeling of "things to come" if you dare to fall outside of a corporation's control grid....

Microsoft disconnects Xbox gamers

Thousands of gamers may have been cut off from Microsoft's online gaming service Xbox Live for modifying their consoles to play pirated games.

Online reports suggest that as many as 600,000 gamers may have been affected.

Microsoft confirmed that it had banned a "small percentage" of the 20 million Xbox Live users worldwide.

My name's Raz, I'm 25 years old, I'm a massive Xbox gamer. I play every day after work and all day on the weekends. The Xbox for me is just about playing online, that's why I love it - well did!

It was a big day yesterday, the latest game we've been waiting months and months for. We've played the whole series and this one's come out, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
....
All loading up, everything's going well, I was happy. It came on to the start screen of Call of Duty and I thought, 'Do you know what, let me quickly sign in online'. I sign in online and next thing I see, 'Your console has been banned from Xbox'

Re-chipped their XBOX consoles so that they can play games downloaded from the internet - without paying £50 for the full price game. The 2nd hand market on XBOX games is pretty poor - with 18month old second-hand games going for £2-£5 at car boot sales. So this re-chipping really only affects "fan-boys" - "young adults" who really want to play the new games but don't have bottomless pockets.

Re-chipping costs about £75 according to the BBC article.
