Russian train crash kills 25, terrorism suspected
Reuters - Fri Nov 27, 2009 - by Oleg Shchedrov
* Official says 25 killed, 63 injured
* Crash may have been caused by explosion
MOSCOW, Nov 28 (Reuters) - The crash of a luxury train in Russia killed 25 people and injured up to 63 more, an official said on Saturday, and sources suggested it may have been an act of terrorism.
"Twenty-five people died in the accident," an official reported to Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu during a meeting televised by Vesti-25 television, hours after the crash.
Several carriages of the Nevsky Express travelling from Moscow to St Petersburg were derailed at 9:30 p.m. (1830 GMT) on Friday near the town of Bologoye, 350 km (200 miles) from Moscow.
Estimates of the number of injured ranged from 55 to 63 while Itar-Tass news agency quoted a spokesman for the regional emergencies authority in the Tver region as saying as many as six passengers could still be buried under wreckage.
Russian railways said the train carried 661 passengers in 13 carriages and that four of them were damaged. Regional prosecutors said two carriages were affected while Vesti-24 television said their correspondent could see three.
There were no official statements about the cause but several sources suggested it may have been the result of an explosion.
"A one metre (3-ft)-diameter hole has been found next to the railway track," Interfax news agency quoted an unnamed source in Moscow's law enforcement agencies as saying.
"Witnesses heard a loud slap before the accident. All of this could point to a possible act of terrorism."
A railway official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "We are told this could have been a terrorist act."
In 2007, 30 people were injured when the same Nevsky Express train was derailed after an explosion damaged rails.
Earlier, Russian news agencies quoted transport officials as saying an electrical fault may have been to blame.
A spokesman for the Prosecutor-General's investigating committee, urged caution before leaping to conclusions.
"We will only be able to say what has happened after investigators start their work," the spokesman told Itar-Tass news agency.

Perhaps the names of the dead may reveal a possible target.
Ive been wondering about some of these bombings if it would be possible to have a laser or other type guided missile being fired from a remote location like, space, or another country and if that missile would avoid radar detection.
Quite scary when you think you can just type in your postcode and see your house on a map. I would presume missile guidance technology must be well capable of doing that perhaps without the need now for laser guided provision.
Of course eyewitnesses could see a missile (depending on speed). _________________ JO911B.

Possible motive?
There sure has been a lot of anti-9/11-OCT stuff on Russia Today this year.
Perhaps too much... _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/bobzimmerfan?feature=mhum#p/a |

FSB will certainly be crawling all over the Russian far right ... so unless this neo Nazi group is just an internet and mainstream media entity like Al Quaeda the FSB are likely to know who did this.
Could be a small mole faction within the FSB? But they may be biding their time on this one. Letting them think they've friends in high places and got away with it.
If it is the FSB proper it signals that Putin has re-entered the war of terror on the side of NATO.

Yep, it's probably one of those options, Tony. Not a great deal seems to leak out of Russia since the FSB's appartment bombing though there have been many suspicious circumstances
Putin re-enters war of terror on NATO's side would seem about right
Not too sure about little neo-nazi groups standing about in the wilderness triggering railroad bombs.. |

Russia Uncovers New Leads in Hunt for Nevsky Express Bombers
By Lucian Kim
Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Russian investigators announced new leads in their search for the bombers who killed at least 26 people traveling on the Nevsky Express between Moscow and St. Petersburg on Nov. 27.
Police found a jacket containing letters from a convict 100 meters from the blast site in northwestern Russia, Vladimir Markin, spokesman for the Investigative Committee of the Prosecutor General’s Office, said on state television today.
The government has pledged to pay 1.1 million rubles ($38,000) to each of the families of the victims of Russia’s worst terrorist attack outside the North Caucasus since 2004. Two people are missing, Vesti reported today, while 95 survivors are in the hospital, according to RIA Novosti.
After the initial blast, a second explosion went off the next day as investigators approached the crash site, according to the Investigative Committee’s Web site. That device was detonated by mobile phone, resembling tactics used by terrorists in the North Caucasus, according to the statement.
Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Investigative Committee, was hurt in the second blast and hospitalized, Komsomolskaya Pravda reported today, without saying where it got the information.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin yesterday linked the bombing with an explosion that occurred on a railway line connecting southern Russia with Azerbaijan, calling it a “second terror attempt.” No one aboard the Tyumen-Baku train was hurt in the blast yesterday morning and the locomotive sustained only superficial damage, Vesti reported at the time.
