Iranian soldiers have "infiltrated" the border with Iraq and seized control of an oil well, according to officials from Iraq and the United States.
A group of 11 men has raised an Iranian flag and remains at the site, Iraq's Deputy Interior Minister Ahmed Ali al-Khafaji said.
Iraq has not begun military action in response and its forces are waiting for orders, he added.
Its national security council is expected to hold an emergency meeting.
A spokesman for the US military confirmed the soldiers had taken control of the oil well but added it was in "disputed territory" near the border and happened fairly frequently.
"There has been no violence related to this incident and we trust this will be resolved through peaceful diplomacy between the governments of Iraq and Iran," he said.
Another American offiicial, Colonel Peter Newell, said: "What happens is, periodically, about every three or four months, the oil ministry guys from Iraq will go... to fix something or do some maintenance.
"They'll paint it in Iraqi colours and throw an Iraqi flag up.
"They'll hang out there for a while, until they get tired, and as soon as they go away, the Iranians come down the hill and paint it Iranian colours and raise an Iranian flag.
"It happened about three months ago and it will probably happen again."
Sky News' foreign affairs editor Tim Marshall said the incident was a sign of Iran "clearly pushing".
"Its all a bit mysterious but the most likely explantion is that Tehran is sending a message to the world - well to the Israelis and Americans: 'Don't even think of attacking us, you know what might happen if you do'," he explained.
Well 4 is one of five in the Fauqa Field, which is estimated to hold 1.55 million barrels of reserve oil. It is 500m from the Iranian border. |

'Memo' shows Iran nuclear intent
The product can be used as a neutron initiator: the component of a nuclear bomb that triggers an explosion.
The memo apparently details how some work on the trigger should be outsourced to universities, but other work is too secret and must be carried out by "trustworthy personnel" within the organisation allegedly carrying out Iran's secret nuclear weapons research.
Another document seen by the Times is said to be a memo from Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, naming him as the chairman of the Field for the Expansion of Deployment of Advance Technology (Fedat) - which the newspaper says is a cover for a secret nuclear weapons programme.
In his first public response to the report, Mr Ahmadinejad said the accusations were "fundamentally not true".
In an interview filmed on Friday with ABC News, but broadcast on Monday, he dismissed the documents, saying: "They are all a fabricated bunch of papers continuously being forged and disseminated by the American government."
When asked if there would "be no nuclear weapon in Iran, ever", Mr Ahmadinejad said his view was already known.
"You should say something only once. We have said once that we don't want a nuclear bomb. We don't accept it."
A senior adviser to US President Barack Obama, David Axelrod, said it was "nonsense" that the US had fabricated the documents.
"Nobody has any illusions about what the intent of the Iranian government is," he told ABC.
'Bullying'
Iran is already subject to three sets of UN sanctions for its refusal to suspend its uranium enrichment programme.
It is at risk of further sanctions after it rejected a deal to send low-enriched uranium abroad to be refined into fuel for a research reactor.
A defiant Mr Ahmadinejad said Iran would welcome talks "under fair conditions".
"We don't welcome confrontation, but we don't surrender to bullying either," he said.
"If you are saying you are going to impose sanctions, then go and do it."
Mr Ahmadinejad also rejected criticism of Iran's human rights situation and allegations of mass arrests following the elections which returned him to office in June.
"These things have to do with the judiciary. We have good laws. There is the judge. These people have got lawyers. These are not political questions."
He said people in Iran had more freedom than in the US.
The ABC interview took place before the latest protests held at the funeral of the influential dissident cleric, Grand Ayatollah Montazeri.
Iran says its uranium enrichment programme is for purely peaceful purposes, aimed at generating electricity so that it can export more gas and oil.
But the US and its allies say it could be used to develop weapons. |

- Demonstrations in Kerbala where unions and syndicates of workers, students, jurists, professionals... gathered in front of the Iranian consulate demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Iranian army from the Mayssan province. The Iranian consulate barricaded itself in a radius of 150 meters of concrete to prevent demonstrators from reaching the main gates. Again the Southern Shiite tribes were involved in this demonstration.
Wait it gets better...
- The PEOPLE (as opposed to Sadrist party) of Al Thawra city now called Sadr City also voiced their deep discontentment. Many were interviewed and they had a go at the official spokesperson of Al Maliki; Ali Al-Dabbagh who belittled the take over by the Iranians, and two elderly men said, textually. " In 1979, we offered thousands of martyrs for a few inches of land and today, they(Iran) are not only swallowing land but also oil fields."
- The governor of the Mayssan province (a Shiite) was also not too pleased. Even though he was more diplomatic than the people demonstrating, he urged the puppet government to take "serious measures" to stop the Iranian army from infiltrating further into Southern Iraq. (hahahaha)
- Another head from the Southern tribe is also urging the "international community" (another hahahaha) to stop Iran from building its nuclear reactors along the Southern Iraqi borders stretching from Al-Imarra to Basra, as those "will adversely affect the health of the local population with radiation waste". Radiation waste over and above, the tons of Depleted Uranium that the barbaric, criminal USA used in Southern Iraq and not only there...
Now what do you think was the official reaction of the puppet government?
Apart from Tarek Al Hashimi (VP) and the heads of the Southern tribes, news have it that explicit orders were given to those presiding the puppet parliament NOT to make any mention of Iran's latest moves in the Mayssan province and its appropriation of the oilfield there. Mind you this is NOT the 1st oil field it has appropriated in Southern Iraq. Definitely not the 1st, since 2003. |

China has called for more dialogue in place of sanctions. Russia has shown signs it is warming to the idea of supporting more action against Iran.
Israel, the only Middle Eastern country thought to already be nucleararmed, says it is still considering all options to deal with Iran, including military action.
Israel is thought to have repeatedly drilled its military to prepare for an airstrike on Iran's nuclear facilities.
Iran's leader Mahmoud Ahmedinejad has often disputed the extent of the Holocaust and whether it took place.
He has also called for Israel to be 'wiped from the pages of history'.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made dealing with the Iranian threat one of his highest political priorities. |
