From Alfred McCoy's the Politics of Heroin:
China banned imports of heroin in 1799, but British sea captains bribed Canton's madarins and smuggled the chests into Southern China..
The trade was worth £22 million (per year, presumably) in the 1820s..
After restrictions were lifted by the East Company imports rose from 270 tons in 1820 to 2,555 tons in 1840..
Customs were fended off with bribes and artillery..
3 million Chinese addicts by the 1830s..
"I call upon all British Christians," wrote Rev. Algernon Thelwall of Cambridge Universtiy in 1839, "to come forward as one man, in opposition to this nefarious traffic, which brings such deep disgrace upon the Christian name." ..
in 1838 the Emperor ordered an investigation and sent the mandarin Lin Tse-Hsu to Canton. He confiscated 95 tons of opium from foreign ships, including 10 tens from the American firm Russell & Co, and destroyed it..
BRITAIN SENT SIX WARSHIPS AND 7,000 TROOPS AND CAPTURED CANTON IN MAY 1839. FOR TWO YEARS THE BRITISH EXPEDITION MOVED NORTH, SACKING CHINA'S COASTAL CITIES..
CHINA SURRENDERED AT NANKING IN 1842, CEDED HONG KONG, OPENED FIVE NEW PORTS TO FOREIGN TRADE, AND PAID $21 MILLION COMPENSATION FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF THE OPIUM!! ..
As a result, imports further doubled to 4,810 tons in 1858. After the Second Opium War of 1856-1858, China agreed to legalise opium under pressure from Lord Elgin, the British emissary..
This was followed by mass addiction on a scale never equalled by any nation before or since: in 1906 the imperial government reported that 27% of all adult Chinese males were opium smokers..
Domestic production began on a huge scale, with much agricultural land given over to opium. Finally, China began to export opium to Southeast Asia..
WHAT A DISGRACE!! WE OUGHT TO BE ASHAMED OF OURSELVES!!

Superb information chaps & welcome aboard Andrew.
About time this was discussed on the boards.
I can almost see the verdigris domes of the Haileybury Imperial Service College from where I live. To think that this grew from the "company" - the former East India Company College with the proceeds of 19th Century drug dealing.
Wasn't Queen Victoria into opium ?
Maybe, within this historical context, the so called "war on drugs" might be illuminated with a somewhat different light . . .

I have formed the impression that proceeds from drug trafficking is the mainstay of black operations, so yes it seems relevant. There's been so much written about the CIA's drug smuggling, especially Mena Airport and Barry Seal, (with the Mossad getting a mention in that context), and there's Red Cocaine by Joseph Douglass which I think claims that the Russians and the Chinese are the main players (possible). Right at the beginning of McCoy's book I learnt that the CIA in S E Asia took over the trade from the French intelligence services when they left. Also in McCoy (who is a university professor and scholarly) is that part of the reason for invading Sicily in 1943 was to reinstate the Mafia who had been destroyed by Mussolini..

Obviously there are criminal gangs, and I have a sneaking suspicion that their leaders tend to be masons, which might answer the question of who is providing protection and taking a large cut. Then there's Adnan Kashoggi who seems to be linked to all the major players..
