Quote:
"We need to receive 100 percent proof of North Korea's role in the sinking of the corvette," the spokesman, Igor Lyakin-Frolov, was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

"Our specialists are currently studying the materials of the investigation. We need to draw our own conclusions about what happened. Everything will depend on the situation and the body of evidence."

The comments came a day after Russia announced that it was sending a team of experts to South Korea to assess the evidence about North Korea's involvement in the sinking of the warship, which left 46 sailors dead.

In a separate report, a senior source in Russia's navy suggested that Moscow was unhappy about being excluded from the lengthy multinational investigation into the sinking of the Cheonan, a 1,200-tonne corvette.

The investigation -- which included experts from South Korea, the United States, Australia, Britain and Sweden -- concluded last week that there was overwhelming evidence that the ship had been sunk by a North Korean torpedo.

"With the participation of Russian specialists, the results of the investigation into the incident might have been more complete and objective," the Russian navy source told Interfax.

A US aircraft has been sent from the Japanese island of Okinawa to spy on the North, and the Japanese government has been informed of an unusually high level of troop movements on the northern side of the inter-Korean border, The Times learnt today.

South Korea intends to bring up the torpedo attack at the United Nations Security Council as early as next week, but it seems likely that strong condemnation will be vetoed by China and Russia. Publicly, China has declined even to accept the conclusions of the international investigation which found that the Cheonan was sunk by a North Korean torpedo.

“The issue is highly complicated,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ma Zhaoxu, said. “China does not have first-hand information. We are looking at the information from all sides in a prudent manner. China’s position on the ship remains unchanged.”

North Korea has denied all responsibility for the attack. “The reckless campaign ... of South Korea over its warship sinking is the unpardonable worst provocation and an open declaration of a war,” the North Korean Workers’ Newspaper said today. “The group of traitors’ assertion that the warship was sunken by ‘a torpedo attack of the North’ is a sheer farce reminiscent of a thief crying ‘Stop the thief!’”

It is almost a replica of Operation Parakaram that India launched immediately after December 13, 2001 attacks on the Indian parliament; South Korean military divisions are marching with tanks, artillery and an assortment of American weaponry towards borders alongside Seoul announcing retaliatory measures against its Northern peer. At the Itaewon US military base near Seoul, marines and commandos seem gearing up for an assault.

Railway stations and bus stations in South Korea are full with young soldiers in their battle dresses, kissing their girlfriends and bidding adieu to their families. Leaves have been cancelled and rumours are thick in Seoul that government is even drafting young men into the army in an emergency.

At the Dorasan military station overlooking North Korea, a senior military officer with maps and sketches is briefing the visiting Japanese delegation about South Korean plans. As visitors, mostly Western tourists, were allowed inside the hall, I asked the officer, if his operations would be different from Operation Parakaram, which failed to achieve any objective for India eight years ago, he looks in surprise and replies curtly that he has not studied the Indian operation.

South Korea has barred many nationalities from visiting the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), including West Asians, North Africans, Afghanis and Pakistanis. Indians are still friends as my guides agreed to take me on the DMZ tour after they saw my Indian passport.

Is there such a thing as a North Korean font?
Posted By Blake Hounshell Thursday, May 20, 2010 - 7:42 PM
When news broke earlier this week that one of the clues pointing investigators to Pyongyang's culpability in the sinking of the Cheonan, the South Korean vessel that was sent to Davy Jones's locker by a mysterious explosion in late March, was a North Korean font http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/05/19/south.korea.ship/index.html , I was intrigued. What did that mean? I pictured something like what you might see in North Korean propaganda posters: http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2010/02/22/poster_children_of_th e_hermit_kingdom?page=0,7

So I asked Martin Heijdra, a reference librarian and East Asian typography expert at Princeton (whose specialty, he told me, is actually Chinese), what he thought of the matter. Without having seen the text in question, here's what he emailed:

As one professor here once said: the footnotes of today (in this case, yesterday) are the headlines of tomorrow ... I can anticipate the following issues though, and would have a hard time coming up with any other:

Quote:
(1) Yes, there are some consistent differences in certain letters between North Korean and South Korean practice (there is a difference between a Northern and Southern ? e.g.)
(2) The reported syllable, ? , however does NOT contain such letters.
(3) therefore, we get into stylistic differences. In the most commonly used styles, outside the letters noted above, differences would be, I would think, undetectable, just as they are between different font companies--the standard styles are, well, standard; the differences are elsewhere. Yes, the whole array of display/ornamented fonts is very different in North Korea and South Korea as far as I have studied them (not since 2006 or so!), but those fancy decorative fonts are unlikely to have been used on a torpedo.
(4) According to my Korean reference colleague, Hyoungbae Lee, photos of the alleged font have not been released. Some news actually states it was not a font at all, but handwriting.
(5) Moreover, North-Korean style fonts, whether produced in North Korea or by Korean companies in Japan, together with the software add-ons necessary to use them on computers, have been available for purchase in Japan, Singapore, China etc. (That's where I got some of my original information from).
(6) Hence, this piece of evidence is rather shaky.

Later, Lee chimed in with the photograph of the font, noting it is "handwritten with a marker" -- meaning, Heijdra said, that "all discussion of 'North Korean font' is useless." Here's the image:

Any other Korean font experts want to weigh in?

UPDATE: More on the font here: http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2920777

Quote:
After finding the “smoking gun” on Saturday, the investigators thoroughly examined and analyzed the piece. The marking appeared to be handwritten, and Army Brig. Gen. Yun Jong-seong, head of the scientific investigation bureau of the joint probe, said an analysis of the ink, although it will take time, may further reinforce the team’s conclusions.

“No country [other than North Korea] marks a torpedo component with a Korean letter,” General Hwang added.

http://dandelionsalad.wordpress.com/2010/05/27/there-was-no-explosion- there-was-no-torpedo/

Dear all,
I was informed the below content from the Solidarity for Peace And Reunification of Korea website.
http://www.spark946.org/bugsboard/index.php?BBS=s_news&action=viewForm &uid=2529&page=1
The site reports about the speech by Shin Sang-Chul on the truth of sunken Cheonan ship in a church of Seoul in the evening of May 26, 2010 and also his letter to Hillary Clinton.
http://www.seoprise.com/board/view.php?table=seoprise_12&uid=154146
Letter to Hillary Clinton, U.S. Secretary of state
There was no Explosion. There was No Torpedo.
Mr. Shin Sang- Chul is representative advisor of Seoprise, who graduated the Korea Maritime University and has been on board of the convoys and carriers as a navy officer; a former sailor in a container ship; a former shipbuilding director in the Hyundae, Samsung and Daewoo; and the investigation committee member of the joint civilian-military investigation committee on the accident of the sunken Cheonan ship (translation from the SPARK site in the link)
[...]
He has been sued by the navy for the charge of libel after he said the truth of the accident.
In the Seoprise site in the link, he introduces his letter and urges to the people to spread his letter to the world with the remarks below:
Quote:
‘Today, Hillary Clinton, United States Secretary of State visited Korea. I sent the United States Embassy my own conclusion on the investigation of the Cheonan ship, with some graphics so that she could read it in her returning plane to the United States. I pray that Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State could reach closer to Truth.
Related to it, I hope all the net-i-zens help this content could be spread to all the government institutes and press companies. In the well-known overseas press, there are the names and email information of the reporters so please spread at most and inform what is happening in Korea.
Even though I am not sure how much effect it could bring, my best prayer can be this letter could be delivered to the overseas reporters who can see the truth of one person. If you could forward this, some powerful reporters could receive the bunch of emails with same content. Then, his concern could become the article.’ (Translation from the Seoprise website)
Thanks.”

Interesting set of discussions here. I was looking for info on USNS Salvor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USNS_Salvor_%28T-ARS-52%29 which has the role of salvage ship but also has a mine laying capability for "rising sea mine" - which sit on the seabed to detect and attack enemy ships only. It looks like either accidentally or intentionally a "rising sea mine" hit the Cheonan - well that's what the pictures seem to indicate - a hole in the bottom!

An example of an intelligent seabed mine is given here:

http://www.janes.com/articles/Janes-Underwater-Warfare-Systems/Sea-Urc hin-United-Kingdom.html

Quote:

Sea Urchin (United Kingdom), Underwater weapons - Mines

Type
Programmable influence mine.

Description
Developed in the 1980s, Sea Urchin is an intelligent seabed mine which utilises the mine modernisation components developed by BAeSEMA for the Royal Navy. It can be programmed to detonate on a range of influence characteristics either singly or in combination, including a ship's acoustic or magnetic influences. Its advanced microprocessor control ensures that detonation occurs at the closest approach point of the target within the damage radius of the mine. The sensing and processing elements are combined into a single unit, the SAP.Mine setting and self-testing procedures are simple and secure, being achieved by means of a small plug-in setting box weighing less than 5 kg.Equipped with a 350 kg warhead (an additional warhead can be added), Sea Urchin can be deployed in water depths from 5 to 200 m or in a moored version on a seabed 200 m deep at a depth of 75 m. Various launch attachments are available for the nose and tail of the mine to permit deployment by surface vessels, submarines or aircraft. An exercise version is also available.

South Korean investigator hounded for doubting official version

A former member of the team that investigated the sinking of the Navy warship Cheonan is now under investigation himself for allegedly spreading false rumors about the incident.

Prosecutors yesterday called in Shin Sang-cheol, who runs the Internet political magazine Seoprise, to answer questions. Shin joined the investigative team of military and civilian experts at the recommendation of the Democratic Party, but the National Defense Ministry asked the National Assembly to replace him for reportedly arousing public mistrust in the probe’s results while rarely joining in the team’s investigation.

According to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, Shin made claims that challenged the team’s conclusion that the Cheonan was sunk by a North Korean torpedo attack. Shin has repeatedly claimed that the sinking was just an accident, and that the South had tampered with evidence to blame the North.

Navy officials filed a petition on May 18 asking prosecutors to launch a probe, claiming that Shin had defamed the Navy by spreading false information.

Prosecutors said they were questioning Shin about the grounds for his argument.

“As a member of the probe team, I made my conclusion based on my experiences and knowledge,” Shin said on his way to questioning yesterday.

Shin studied oceanography at Korea Maritime University and was commissioned as a Navy second lieutenant. He was discharged from active duty as a first lieutenant after serving on a patrol boat in the Yellow Sea. Following his military service, he worked seven years for shipbuilders. Since 2004, he has worked for the progressive Internet political magazine.

Shin has often made public his opinions about the Cheonan’s sinking. He once claimed that the ship collided with another vessel. Lately, he has said he believes that the South tampered with evidence by marking the salvaged propulsion unit.

The marking “1 beon” (“No. 1” in English) written on the shaft was one piece of evidence that led investigators to conclude that the torpedo was a North Korean weapon.

“I think we marked the 1 beon,” Shin said Wednesday in a lecture he titled “Can we trust the Cheonan probe outcome?”

“The magnified photo of the evidence showed that the marking was written on the rusted surface,” he said. “If it were the North who marked it, the marking should have been written on a smooth surface.”

The investigation into Shin is not the first of its kind. On May 7, the Central District Prosecutors’ Office began a probe into Park Sun-won, former President Roh Moo-hyun’s secretary for national security, on charges that he spread false information about the sinking. Park, a Northeast Asia energy and security visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution who served as an adviser for a Democratic Party committee on the Cheonan investigation, said in an MBC radio interview in April that the Lee Myung-bak administration was concealing information about the sinking.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Chung Un-chan ordered the government to come up with a measure to stop the widespread rumors surrounding the Cheonan’s sinking.

Japan, whose new Government had won election on a pledge to close the controversial US Naval base on Okinawa, suddenly capitulated and agreed with Washington to “settle” the dispute, citing the Korean crisis as grounds. Japan and the United States have now come to an agreement on the relocation of theUS military base in Okinawa. Japanese Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa and US Defense Secretary Robert Gates met at the Pentagon the same day the Korean commission issued its “findings.”

Quote:
In addition to the dispute over the status of the key US base on Okinawa in Japan, the US is under pressure to end its military command in South Korea and turn it over to the South Koreans in 2012. The US has 28,000 troops on the peninsula. In line with an agreement reached after the end of the 1950s Korean war, South Korean soldiers follow US military orders in case of war on the Korean Peninsula. The latest incident comes as North Korea appeared ready to resume the six-party talks on North Korea’s nuclear program, involving Russia, Japan, China, the United States and the two Koreas, stalled in April 2009 when Pyongyang pulled out of the negotiations in protest against the United Nations’ condemnation of its missile tests.

S Korea seeks UN action over ship
Lee Myung-bak, the South Korean president, announced the move on Friday, calling on North Korea to admit "its wrongdoing".

"Today, the Republic of Korea government referred the matter of North Korea's attack against the Cheonan to the UN Security Council," Lee said at a security forum in Singapore.

"If we are to once again tolerate North Korea's blatant act of violence, then I believe that will not promote but endanger the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula and that of Northeast Asia.

"North Korea must admit its wrongdoing, it must pledge to never again engage in such reprehensible action.

"This is in the interest of peace. This is in the interest of North Korea."

'Military provocation'

Last month, a team of international investigators concluded that the Cheonan was hit by a North Korean torpedo.

Pyongyang has denied having anything to do with the incident and has accused the South of fabricating evidence and framing it for the attack.

Quote:
N.Korean Eminence Grise Dead in Mysterious Circumstances
Ri Je-gang A powerful North Korean official has suddenly died in mysterious circumstances. North Korea on Wednesday evening announced the death in a car accident of Ri Je-gang (80), the first deputy director of the Workers Party's Organization and Guidance Department.

Ri worked at the powerful department directly supervised by North Korean leader Kim Jong-il for 37 years. He was apparently deeply involved in establishing the succession for Kim's son Jong-un. Kim Jong-un's mother, the late Ko Yong-hee, reportedly asked him to make sure that one of her sons, Jong-chol or Jong-un, succeeds their father. Ko died in 2004.

Senior positions in the party, the government, and the military were more or less in Ri’s gift.

Experts say there is something fishy about the sudden death of this eminence grise. It is possible that Ri was killed while driving his own car drunk after participating in one of Kim Jong-il’s secret parties, which happened to Kim Yong-sun, a party secretary in charge of South Korean affairs, in 2003 at the age of 69. But chances are slim that the octogenarian Ri drove himself.

But experts say the timing of his death is peculiar, coming as it did hard on the heels of the dismissal on May 14 of Kim Il-chol, the minister of the people's armed forces, for reasons of old age, also at the age of 80. Ri Yong-chol (81), another senior deputy director of the Organization and Guidance Department who had supported Ko Young-hee alongside Ri Je-gang, died of a reported heart attack in April.

A North Korean source said, "In the 1970s, Kim Chang-bong, the then minister of national defense, died in a car accident after he opposed Kim Jong-il's succession to power. We suspect that Ri's death was also related to an internal power struggle, although there is no evidence yet to support the speculation."

Ri had apparently been on bad terms with his rival Jang Song-taek, Kim Jong-il's brother-in-law and administration director of the North Korean Workers Party, after he tried to purge Jang in 2004.

The deaths of elderly senior officials have been coming thick and fast of late. Kim Jung-rin (87), a party secretary, and Ri Jong-bu, an artillery commander, also died recently.

A South Korean security official said, "It's possible that there'll be a massive restructuring in the North." Pyongyang has already announced an extraordinary session of the Supreme People's Assembly on June 7.

637. The sunken warship of South Korea (6/7/2010)

The sunken warship of South Korea is another soap opera conducted by the US intelligence.

1. North Korea has no motive. North Korea has economic problem and had a currency reform early this year. It failed. North Korea relies much on the aids from China, South Korea, and even US. To create such kind of crisis would offend all these countries. The Central Journal of South Korea has referred the information from the high ranking officials of S. Korea government on May 28 that N. Korea leader Kim Jong Il had personally assured the Chinese President that N. Korea is clean in this incident during his official visit to Beijing between 5/3 to 5/7.

2. South Korea has the motive. There would be an election between late May and early June. If a state was attacked by enemy, the ruling party used to get strong support from public. But this time the principle failed. The party of President Li Ming-Bo lost big to the opposite party, because a quarter of South Korean people don't believe the result of "international investigation on sunk Cheonan". The dead people were all low ranking sailors. The victim family doubt government's role because no officer among casualty.

3. US media report little on the result of recent S. Korea election, let alone the news that a quarter of S. Korean people won't believe their government in this case.(I learned it from Chinese newspaper) There is reason for the censorship.

4. I believe the Feds conducted this crisis. They used to plot big events to distract a framed drug case. As I have written and predicted in #631, 635, 636:

3/26 Cheonan warship sunk in an explosion. (One day before the alleged action date)
3/27 My mother's birthday party in my brother in law's house. He is a target in framed drug case.

5/20 South Korea officially announced the result of "International investigation of the sunk Cheonan".(One day before the alleged action date)
5/21 A planned action date to arrest in a framed drug case which I predicted on 5/12. (see “635. May 21 plot (5/12/2010)”)

Who has the motive to sink the Cheonan? S. Korea and the US. Enemy attack used to increase the public support to ruling Party. There is a big election on 6/2. So New York Times predicted the Ruling party would win the election.

Ship Sinking Aids Ruling Party in S. Korean Vote

BUCHEON, South Korea — The sinking of the South Korean warship Cheonan, apparently by a North Korean torpedo, has provoked an international crisis that has embroiled big powers like the United States and China. But here in South Korea, it has had another effect: buoying the country’s once embattled conservative, pro-American president, Lee Myung-bak.

Soon after taking office two years ago, Mr. Lee appeared at risk of losing public support, as he faced mass demonstrations on the streets of Seoul against the import of United States beef. Now, political experts are talking about the “Cheonan effect,” as polls show that more than half of expected voters approve of the president and his tougher line toward the North.

But this time the principle failed. The party of President Lee Myung-bak lost big to the opposite party, because a quarter of South Korean people don't believe the result of "international investigation on sunk Cheonan". The dead people were all low ranking sailors. The victim family doubt government's role because no officer among casualty.

S Korean ruling party loses crucial local elections

SEOUL (Xinhua) — The South Korean ruling Grand National Party managed Thursday to win only six of the 16 key mayoral and gubernational posts in one of the biggest local elections in history.
In the elections widely seen as a mid-term assessment of the Lee Myung-bak administration, the Grand Nationals suffered an embarrassing setback as it only secured six of the 16 key mayoral and gubernatorial posts while its rival, the liberal main opposition Democratic Party (DP), secured seven.

That’s why you seldom see the news of this South Korea election in US media. Many people even don’t know it. Because that’s not the government’s favor.

North Korea threatens 'nuclear war' over troop exercises

Pyongyang ramps up the tension over this weekend's joint US-South Korean wargames in the Sea of Japan

Doubts surface on North Korea's role in ship sinking
Some in South Korea dispute the official version of events: that a North Korean torpedo ripped apart the Cheonan.

U.S. investigators say South Korea evidence points to torpedo attack

Armed with dossiers of their own scientific studies and bolstered by conspiracy theories, critics dispute the findings announced May 20 by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, which pointed a finger at Pyongyang.

They also question why Lee made the announcement nearly two months after the ship's sinking, on the very day campaigning opened for fiercely contested local elections. Many accuse the conservative leader of using the deaths of 46 sailors to stir up anti-communist sentiment and sway the vote.

This is important article if long winded.

here are my thoughts 1st for your perusal Wink

Quote:
OK so its good at saying what's going on but doesn't say who funds it who controls it and any means to stop it?
Who calls the shots?
The House Of Windsor?
The Zionists?
Who's idea was Israel?
Why has Kashmir been left in limbo the same as Palestine?
Who benefits, and why?

In short my point is why commentate if you have no solutions? So many people choose to write x=y and it's like 'This is the picture, you can't change it' They are quite crushing really, maybe that is the idea?

As I said above, if widespread war does break out (which I'm convinced is the plan, with all this Eugenics talk as last seen in 1920s) there really is nothing we can do for the best, its all down to the hope that we get through in one piece, with at least some semblance of sanity left Sad

N. Korea plays the role of false flag enemy which always operates to the US demand. (like Al Qaida does in 911) That's why it always gets a treat.

North Korea had nuclear test. It also threatens a war on US. Iran never does a nuclear test. It also says it has no intention to do so. Yet, North Korea got food aid from US and Iran gets a sanction.

Obama keeps N. Korea off terror sponsor list

Feb. 3, 2010

President Barack Obama said Wednesday he had decided not to reinstate nuclear-armed North Korea to a list of countries that the United States considers state sponsors of terrorism.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last June had raised the possibility of returning North Korea to the list in reaction to recent nuclear and missile tests. Several Republican senators had been demanding such a move.
