I suppose the services will claim the “Official Secrets Act” and/or obfuscate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_Secrets_Act

There can only be one reason to keep secrets and that is for nefarious reasons. There’s Law’s already written to prevent any need for state secrets for what ever purpose. So it’s very short sighted to ever be apart of it; in thinking that there can be some long term benefit for it/them.

That's already happened, if you read the artciles above Andrew, you can clearly see the investigation has been set up to ensure that certain aspects can not be adeqatley probed due to "National Secruity" - which basically says it all.

There is sometimes a need for secrecy but in a case such as this the Police should be able to delve into all aspects. The fact that they are not, proves the services are hidding something. It also suggests Gareth Williams was involved in some highly sensitive work - which only begs the question why did no-one check his address when he failed to return to work two weeks prior to his body being found?

Also lots of disinformation seems to be leaking to the press, causing the family further greaf.

What is a 'real' truther. Mr Shayler was absolutely sincere & honest in his belief that what MI6 were doing was wrong. And that he should blow the whistle. I knew Annie and him personally in these early days.
But David was (willingly) dosed up with very powerful halucinogenic drugs which IMO tipped him over into la-la I am Jesus land.

But this is a discussion of spies' sexuality.
A corrupt, dishonest and infiltrated MI5 would be quietly content to have sexual deviants such as closet transvestites on their staff. This gives 'Mother', MI5's Director General, greater power over his or her employees and skews the power in favour of the senior staff.

So IMO MI5/6 & GCHQ are schizophrenic - on the surface saying that sexual deviance would compromise their staff but on the other hand wanting sexual deviants because they don't want spies 'going native' and supporting justice and/or the British public's civil liberties.

IMO Gareth Williams would have been vulerable to pornography and female seduction because he had no partner. This again is ideal, from a control freak's point of view.

BTW for the same reason it's great for control freaks, NWO or otherwise, to have sexual deviants in the cabinet! Of which we have seen several examples already.

xmasdale,
What they would tell you and what is reality are two completely different matters. I don't believe for one moment that Shaler was a real "truther", it follows the patern of infiltration and credibility gaining, before finally doing as much damage as possible. It is as old as the hills. Rule number one, don't believe anything a goon (current or former) tells you - lying is a way of life for them.

I agree in part but on another level there is no need for any secrecy at all ever. If you were to go through some examples where people say there is sometimes a need for secrecy you can find that there isn't a need.

Well not exactly a thread for this discussion but at a purley simplistic level could you imagin taking on the Nazi's while letting them know what all our plans were? Or Virgin competing with BT while allowing them access to all their corporate plans, budgets, partners and customers? Or how about allowing nafarious persons access to all your personal details? So the local gangs can find out when your in or out, where you work, what you own and when the best time to come round and take it would be.

I hear this argument time and time again, it's idealistic, it's a utopian dream, in a far from utopian world.

Back to topic, Gareth Williams was bumped off - he certainly didn't contort himself and lock himself in a sports bag, it was a criminal act, he was working for the state, payed for by the public, the circumstances raise alarm bells, the public want to know the truth. We know the state regularly kill people Dr David Kelly, Princess Diana, 7/7, 9/11, Bali, Madrid, Algeria, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland, etc. We also know the state does not serve the people, it serves financial elites and their corporate entities and agendas. Therefore, it is in OUR interest for the truth to come out about this.

I think you have answered your own question jazds.

The blatant disinformation campaign after his death clearly points to who the culprits might be.

In the words of John Maynard Keynes:
Quote:
I work for a Government I despise for ends I think criminal.

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/John_Maynard_Keynes

I see a subtle message within the very public message:

Quote:
Landlord's name is a Russian joke

Gareth Williams was found dead in a flat rented from a company called New Rodina. Details of the company ownership are hidden because it is registered in the British Virgin Islands and not listed with Companies House.

Land registry documents show property was bought for £675,250 in 2000 with a mortgage from the Royal Bank of Scotland and remortgaged twice, in September 2005 and February 2006.

The documents show the owner operated through a law firm called Park Nelson which occupied a rented office in Bell Yard, off Fleet Street, but no longer appears to exist.

New Rodina, which means "new home" or "new homeland" in Russian, is a familiar one for Russian speakers, and may have been part of an in-joke among GCHQ employees relocated to London.
Typically, Russians who live abroad refer to their adopted country as a "new rodina".
"There is an element of joke in it. Russians like this kind of wordplay," one Russian said.

The name raises the possibility that either Williams, or his superiors, may have been working on clandestine material relating to the Kremlin or Russia's ubiquitous intelligence services.

Another possibility is that Williams's Pimlico flat is Russian-owned. Affluent Russians make frequent use of offshore companies. London is popular with rich Russians, many of whom have homes in the capital or educate their children at top private schools.

"New Rodina is the kind of name you could give to a company offering flats and services to newly-arrived Russians seeking a foothold in London," one Russian said.

Enemies domestic, both sides; would have saved millions from the suffering. Men are very slow to learn and after thousands of years this Law has been ignored as it most likely will still be ignored and billions of lives will suffer still.

Do you not think there are real Laws for economics too? But the most important communication that is completely free is it seems lost to them (man) in confusion.

We? Have let a loved one down for allowing this charade to continue with it nefarious Secret service as long as it has, unfortunately he then became a criminal himself; in his own and others confusion.

My problem is the american mythology surrounding Bin Laden.
He was allegedly a US spy. At some stage he turned against them.
Then he set up a world organisation to fight them. So how can a collaborating agent suddenly stop being an agent? When did a mafiosi cease to be mafiosi cos he 'retired'? If you have been on the payroll and if they need you they call you. To be on the payroll implies they have compromising information about you, your family, your colleagues.

Are we being fed a distraction to raise the profile of the danger agents are involved in? Due in part because of the pressure for a re-newed investigagin of Dr Kelly... Its also illuminating no politician to date has made a statement?

Nothing "alleged" about bin Laden being Washington's man. That is very well documented. What world-wide organization did OBL set up? If that is a reference to al qaeda then that was set up by the CIA with Saudi and ISI help. It continues to operate for and on behalf of American interests. As for turning against his "former" employers. Pretty tricky to do when you have been dead these past nearly 9 years.

Al Quida = The Database (the name the CIA/NSA gave their Mujhadahin fighters). Whether it exists as an actual organisation, run by Bin Larden (almost certainly dead - he was documented as having been in the American hospital in Dubahi with Kidney failure, just prior to 9/11) is HIGHLY debatable. IT existance has been disputed, not just by truthers but by academics and other - so called - experts.

Whoever has his laptop knows who murdered him.
Comprehensive summary in today's Mail by Sue Reid.
No other national paper has bothered to go into anything like this detail about a story which hits at the heart of this country's integrity.
Educated guess - the assassination was carried out by a ruthless team carrying forged British passports.

A secret stalker. Witnesses who won't talk... but the most tantalising question of all is... Who's got the spy-in-the-bag's missing laptop?

By Sue Reid - Daily Mail - Saturday 4th September 2010
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1308900/Gareth-Williams-A-secr et-stalker-Witnesses-wont-talk--But-whos-got-missing-laptop.html

Number 36 Alderney Street stands in a terrace of tall white houses with gleaming door knockers at the heart of a London enclave the posh estate agents call ‘alpha territory’.

The Queen’s cousin lives down the road of million-pound homes and for 30 years Mimmo d’Ischia, a nearby Italian eaterie, has been a favourite of the Duchess of Cornwall and film stars Joan Collins and Anthony Hopkins.

Even this week, after the strange murder at Number 36 of young British spy Gareth Williams, there is little to show much has changed.

Nothing, that is, apart from the frantic comings and goings by men in suits from the British secret service, MI6, and detectives from Scotland Yard.

The house is where the decomposing body of Mr Williams, padlocked into a sports holdall and thrown into the bath of his top-floor flat, was discovered by police at 6.30 on the evening of Monday, August 23.

The maths genius, loner and cycling fanatic had not turned up for work as a cipher and codes expert at the headquarters of MI6, half a mile from Alderney Street, on the banks of the Thames at Vauxhall.

Today, the mystery over his death is deepening. Was he killed because of his professional life or his private one? Was it an impromptu killing or one that was planned?

Did he die in the top-floor flat after letting in his own killer? Or was he murdered elsewhere by someone who stole his flat keys, before carrying him back and dumping him?

Is it possible that despite his reputation for clean living, an aspect of his private life has led the young spy into danger? Scotland Yard has not ruled out that a woman, or indeed a man, may have been at his flat in the hours before his death. Was she or he invited there to play a sex game that went wrong?

It is, of course, just another question that needs to be answered about the spy who was ‘on loan’ to MI6 from UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), the country’s top-secret listening post in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

When Mr Williams’s gruesome death first became public knowledge, there were lurid and unproven rumours about his private affairs.

Speculation that ‘bondage equipment and gay paraphernalia’ had been found at the flat was later dismissed as ‘garbage’ by Scotland Yard.

His parents, Ian and Ellen, who live in a bungalow in Holyhead, Anglesey, were horrified at the unsavoury claims about their bachelor son’s supposedly wild homosexual lifestyle.

The family insist he lived an exemplary existence and was not gay. A friend of Mr Williams said that the spy was ‘asexual’, and showed little interest in having a relationship with a man or a woman.

A first post-mortem failed to find the cause of his death. A second examination of his body took place a few days ago to unravel if he was drugged, poisoned or smothered. The results of this are still being analysed.

Yet, in a worrying twist, the Mail understands that a turf war has

broken out between the police and MI6, with some police officers complaining that the spooks are hindering their investigation into the spy’s death.

The Mail has learned from sources close to the investigation that Mr Williams informed MI6 that he believed he was being followed in the months before his death, though murder squad detectives say they have not been told this.

This suggests that every aspect of his life at work and at home should be put under the microscope. However, there is frustration at Scotland Yard that the ‘security concerns’ of MI6 are stopping this wide-sweep inquiry happening.

Police attempts to quiz two spies still working at GCHQ who knew Mr Williams well have been unsuccessful and some detectives suspect they have been ‘blocked’ by both MI6 and GCHQ. It is also understood the

murder squad was unable to get to one of his closest friends, a former GCHQ spy.

The man lived at the Alderney Street safe house in 2005 and visited there earlier this year. ‘He knows the day-to-day movements of Mr Williams and that is why he is important,’ added our source.

Scotland Yard murder detectives were this week also waiting to quiz another former GCHQ employee, who suddenly moved to America from Cheltenham six weeks ago and is said to be a ‘best friend’ of the dead codebreaker.

There is also friction between MI6 and GCHQ over the level of protection given to Mr Williams while on his London secondment. ‘Some people feel that he was sent to MI6 on secondment as a goodwill gesture and the intelligence service then “lost” GCHQ’s man,’ said a source.

It is a troubling backdrop to any major murder investigation, especially one into an expert codebreaker who was playing a significant role in protecting Britain.

Meanwhile, the Mail has learned of intriguing riddles about his death. The spy’s brain showed no signs of bruising, indicating he was not knocked unconscious before he died.

This has led to speculation that he may have been killed with a tiny injection of poison, possibly through his inner ear. If so, the needle mark would be almost invisible to the naked eye.

Another riddle is that Mr Williams’s personal computer is thought to be missing. He had designed the small machine to his own specifications and it ‘cannot be found’, the Mail has been told.

The laptop, which Scotland Yard refuses to officially confirm is missing, is crucial to the investigation. It could be a vital window on Mr Williams’s private life, his innermost thoughts, any transfers to and from his online bank account and would reveal if he had money problems.

Importantly, it will help trace his movements between the time he was last seen alive, on August 15, and the discovery of his body eight days later in his flat, where there was no sign of a break-in.

This will help pinpoint the time of his death, which is essential to finding a killer. Mr Williams’s bank and credit cards were used during these crucial eight days.

Troublingly, because it is not known when he died, it has been impossible to discover if they were used by him, or someone who had stolen them from him and was involved in his murder.

In a further conundrum, one of the first police officers who entered the flat after Mr Williams was discovered dead saw some white powder on several surfaces in the kitchen and living room. Although this could prove innocent, the powder is being tested in case it is cocaine or another drug.

In particular, some Scotland Yard detectives believe a public appeal for sightings of Mr Williams in the missing days before his death is essential to solve the murder mystery.

It would involve the release of more photographs and details about his lifestyle, but it is understood to have been ruled out by MI6, which is worried that terrorists might use the information to identify other British spies and their own secrets.

It all sounds disturbingly similar to the case of 28-year-old journalist Jonathan Moyle, another British intelligence agent, whose body was found hanging inside a hotel wardrobe in the Chilean capital Santiago in 1990 with a padded noose around his neck.

He had been investigating a company — ostensibly for his British defence magazine — which was modifying helicopters, possibly to carry nuclear weapons, to sell to the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

But his friends and family believe security sources planted the suggestion that he had died while engaged in an auto-erotic act and tried to stand in the way of the family’s own inquiries.

It took his outraged father to expose the cover-up — and find out that his son had been drugged, suffocated, injected with a lethal substance and then strung up in the wardrobe, a view supported by the British coroner, who returned a verdict of unlawful killing at his inquest eight years later.

This week, the Mail traced Mr Moyle’s former fiancée Annette Kissenbeck to her home in Germany, where she said the latest death of a British ‘spy in a bag’ brings back painful memories.

‘The British intelligence services tried to smear Jonathan by suggesting he was sexually deviant,’ she said. ‘I felt so helpless and alone trying to stand up to what was untrue against such powerful and shadowy forces.’.

The rumour that Moyle indulged in auto-erotic experiences first surfaced at a British embassy cocktail party attended by journalists in Santiago, adding weight to the Chilean claim that he had died by his own hand.

Annette says both were smears to cover up the truth about the murder and the illicit trade with Iraq. ‘Jonathan had everything to live for. We were totally in love with each other and about to get married,’ said Annette this week at her home in Essen, where she works as one of Germany’s leading child doctors.

A year after his death, a Chilean judicial investigation concluded that Moyle had been murdered. But two years later, in 1993, the murder investigation was wrapped up without a single suspect being arrested.

‘Jonathan just wasn’t the type to be depressed. And never in all the time we were together was there any hint that he was into auto-erotic sex,’ said Annette this week.

Even today, she is convinced that the spread of false information was deliberately orchestrated by shadowy figures in British secret services to cover up their own knowledge of the helicopter sales and to protect the UK’s relationship with Chile.

So could the extraordinary story of Jonathan Moyle shed any light on the death of Gareth Williams?

Williams played a key role in the world’s most sensitive and secretive electronic intelligence-gathering system.

He was helping to oversee a network called Echelon. It links satellites and super computers in Britain and the nations of our Western allies, including the U.S.

Set up to monitor the military and diplomatic communications of the Soviet Union during the Cold War, Echelon now eavesdrops on terrorists, such as the Taliban in Afghanistan, threatening British security.

In particular, it listens for key words and phrases that might suggest that an attack on this country is being planned by overseas terrorist cells or home-grown subversives.

He was signed up by GCHQ at 21 while studying for a post-graduate maths certificate at Cambridge, a favourite recruiting ground for the secret services.

His career path was meteoric. Williams had two passports, which allowed him to travel incognito if necessary. Soon he was working for long spells in Afghanistan for our secret services.

Four times a year, he paid visits to America to liaise with the powerful National Security Agency in Fort Meade in Maryland.

When he died, he was living rent-free at Alderney Street, which was bought by MI6 as a ‘safe house’ ten years ago.

It is one of many owned by MI6 dotted around Pimlico, which have been swept for listening devices and kept under surveillance. They are used to put up visiting operatives or to conduct de-briefings in total secrecy.

Mr Williams was due to return to his former flat, rented from a landlady, in Cheltenham yesterday and start back at work at GCHQ later this month.

An associate of Mr Williams told the Mail this week: ‘Gareth really didn’t like London, although he was sent on secondment to MI6 more than once.

‘He suffered it because he had to for his career. He did make a few friends, mainly others sent from GCHQ in Cheltenham who also lived at this MI6 place in Alderney Street.

‘They are the people that know the most about how he spent his spare time over the past few months and MI6 must let the police murder squad speak to them.’

So will the truth about death of the young spy Gareth Williams ever come to light amid the smears and secrecy of the murky world of espionage?

Today, almost a fortnight after the tragic discovery at 36 Alderney Street, you wouldn’t be wise to put money on it. Even if your name was James Bond or George Smiley.

I think a health & safety allowance is in order for the secretive Echelon crowds.

An additional monetary reward would help to ease their anxieties: what use is there in being a flamboyant codebreaker if you can end up rotting in a locked up hold-all, accused of sexual deviance by your own beloved colleagues?

Must be a tough job.

How about...?

Tony I doubt very much this was carried out by a foreign government, although it could have been carried out by allied agents of a foriegn government with the approval of the UK goon command.

You would have to be an insane moron to take a job in intelligence or become an agent, I can think of dozens of strange deaths from the past - the story of Jonathan Moyle, who was bumped off in Chile, was just one name I'd forgotten about. I may be wrong but wasn't there another guy who died in stange circumstances in a similar place just prior to Jonathan? Then there are all the agents who had become assets while involved with loyalist or republican terrorist organisations, whose names were leaked, who were imprisoned, or who died, or were killed or disapeared in stange circumstances. All those people, concerned about what they had become involved in, concerned about others, like Martin McGartland, who saved over 50 lives but when he was exposed the UK goons set him up to be knocked off! Read the book 50 Dead Men Walking or watch the film. I found the book very dificult to read, I couldn't believe that the people tasked with defending this country were so incredibly cold blooded, moronic, counter productive and evil.

This is probably the most INTERESTING article to appear in the press about Gareth Williams....

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/spy-talk/2010/09/gareth_williams_may_ha ve_worke.html

"An expert on the National Security Agency, meanwhile, speculated that Williams was working for the Special Projects Activity, a little-known clandestine unit buried deep in the U.K.’s General Communications Headquarters, Britain’s equivalent of the NSA".

While a further article in the Telegraph underlines the IMPORTANT role he must have played...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/7969595/Gareth-Williams-b ackroom-boy-spy-was-really-a-high-flier.html

"As well as having trouble gathering evidence, police are finding it difficult to discover the exact nature of Williams’s work. They have been briefed that, despite earlier denials, it 'impinged on national security'. An intelligence officer close to the investigation confirmed: 'He was not just a cog in the wheel. He had an important part in making the wheel go round.'"

You are not going to believe this one...

DALY MAIL: "POLICE BELIEVE SPY MAY HAVE KILLED HIMSELF WHEN HE ZIPPED HIMSELF UP IN (a 32"x19") SPORTS BAG, INSIDE HIS BATH AND LOCKED IT FROM THE INSIDE! HE SUFFERCATED HIMSELF WHEN HE FAILED TO OPEN THE BAG - WHICH HE HAD LOCKED FROM THE INSIDE"! Like you do!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1311214/Detectives-believe-GCH Q-spys-death-sex-game-went-wrong.html

Police believe the MI6 spy found dead in a sports bag in a bath inside his flat may have died after a bizarre sex game went wrong, according to well-placed sources.

The Mail on Sunday has learned that a woman police officer climbed into the holdall in which codebreaker Gareth Williams’ naked body was found, re-enacting the events which it is thought could have led to his death.

She managed to zip up the bag and padlock it from the inside, leading investigators to conclude that Mr Williams may have done the same for sexual kicks and suffocated when he could not reopen it.

The theory was bolstered by the fact that a key to the padlock was found alongside his body inside the £150 bag.

Despite being crouched in the holdall, the police officer was able to squeeze her hand through a small gap between the padlock and the zip fastener and lock it from the inside.

Police believe Mr Williams may have gone through the same extraordinary routine, and then passed out, possibly as a result of panic when he was unable to reopen the padlock.

The identity of the officer who undertook the unusual police assignment is not known.

She was chosen partly because her petite size is similar to the slim and short frame of 31-year-old keep-fit fanatic Mr Williams.

His body was found in an extra-large North Face bag, a type which is favoured by explorers because of its 140 litres of storage capacity, durable material, double stitching, twin haul handles and locking zips.

Erotic asphyxiation is defined as the intentional restriction of oxygen to the brain for sexual arousal.

The practice claimed the life of Tory MP Stephen Milligan, whose body was found in 1994 with a bag over his head and an orange in his mouth.

Trapped: Mr Williams body was found in a sports bag like this one. It is only 32 inches long and only slightly taller than a newspaper. Detectives believe he may have suffocated after accidentally locking himself inside

Figures have not been recorded for the number of auto-erotic fatalities (AEFs) in America, although it is estimated between 500 and 1,000 occur in the US every year.

Although most AEFs arise from the use of a noose to restrict the supply of oxygen, deaths have occurred after victims put themselves into bags.

In one example, a Yale University student died after zipping himself into an airtight vinyl bag and binding his hands.

Police have been mystified since cycling enthusiast Mr Williams was found dead inside his £400,000 two-bedroom flat in Pimlico, half-a-mile from the MI6 HQ in Westminster, three weeks ago.

The initial reaction of the police constable who discovered his body was: ‘This is a murder scene.’

There were also rumours that Mr Williams was the victim of a professional ‘hit’. Other theories included the suggestion that he had been murdered by Russian agents.

Tests on his body were ordered to establish whether he was poisoned, as happened when Polonium 210 radiation was used to murder exiled Russian secret agent Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006.

Initial toxicology tests showed no traces of alcohol or recreational drugs in Mr Williams’ system.

Police sources say that the results of more sophisticated tests, carried out to establish the cause of death, might not be known for up to a fortnight.

The MI6 agent’s family have angrily accused the Government of running a ‘dirty tricks’ campaign to blacken his name after reports that he was gay and a cross-dresser.

Police denied claims that gay magazines, bondage gear and the phone numbers of gay escort men were found in the apartment near his body.

Police also dismissed allegations of irregularities in his finances and that a top-secret laptop computer had gone missing from his flat.

Crucially, there was no evidence of violence and no cuts or bruises on Mr Williams’ body, suggesting there had been no struggle.

Crucially, there was no evidence of violence and no cuts or bruises on Mr Williams’ body, suggesting there had been no struggle.

Nor was there any sign of forced entry to his flat, suggesting he either knew his killer and let them in – or there was no killer.

Mr Williams, from Anglesey, North Wales, worked as a cipher and codes expert for the Government’s eavesdropping centre GCHQ in Cheltenham.

He was on a year-long secondment to MI6 which was due to end days after he was found dead.

A child prodigy who had a degree in maths at 17 and went on to obtain a PhD, Mr Williams had the highest security clearance available to an intelligence officer and was part of a secretive ‘cell’ that created devices that can steal data from mobiles and laptops.

He carried out similar work on frequent visits to the National Security Agency in the US.
Mr Williams, who lived on his own and did not have a partner, returned from a ‘planned holiday’ in the US on Wednesday, August 11.

Using his mobile phone to track his last whereabouts, police trawling through CCTV discovered that Mr Williams had made several shopping trips to London’s West End and Knightsbridge on August 14 and 15.

After visiting Harrods, he walked towards a nearby Dolce & Gabbana store, though he did not go in. It is the last time he was seen alive.

Last night a Scotland Yard spokesman said: ‘It would be inappropriate to comment at this stage of the investigation. We are keeping an open mind about the case.’

Mystery of meetings with couple in a cafe five miles from home

By ABUL TAHER and IAN GALLAGHER

Gareth Williams had a series of mysterious meetings at a cafe in the weeks leading up to his death.

Witnesses said the MI6 codebreaker’s late-morning encounters at Patisserie Valerie in Holland Park, West London, took place twice a week and never lasted longer than a few minutes.

Mr Williams, who lived five miles away in Pimlico, usually met a man and a dark-haired woman in their early 30s, although the man occasionally turned up alone.

Mysterious meetings: Spy Gareth Williams had a series of rendezvous with a couple at a Holland Park Patisserie according to waitresses Magdalena Kolakowska and Susana Ribeiro

Polish waitress Magdalena Kolakowska, 24, recalled that Mr Williams would sit at the back of the dimly lit cafe ‘so he could keep an eye on the door’.

Ordering an Americano coffee, he then ‘waited for the couple to approach his table and speak to him’. Miss Kolakowska added: ‘They would come up to him as if they had suddenly just seen him and say, “Hi.” They would speak to him for two or three minutes and go. They would never sit down or have a coffee with him.’

In all, she recalls about eight such encounters. She could not remember any items passing between them and heard nothing of their conversations because all three spoke in low voices.

But it was the brevity of the meetings – coupled with their regularity – that struck staff
as odd. They assumed that Mr Williams, who was dressed casually, was local.

'He was achieving rare high scores on these espionage and war games that are played on the internet. I know it sounds daft, but this is how he was discovered.’

Last week, police announced they were seeking a man and a woman, both of Mediterranean appearance, who called at Mr Williams’ home late one evening in June or July.

Although the man and woman at the cafe are roughly the same age as the couple being sought by police, staff say they did not look Mediterranean.

Patisserie Valerie is next to Holland Park Underground station, where Mr Williams was caught on CCTV on August 14, some 24 hours before he was last seen alive.

Inquiries by this newspaper have established that he visited Holland Park up to four times a week in the two months before his death.

Besides Patisserie Valerie, he went to other cafes and was seen at a nearby Hilton Hotel. He invariably arrived on his bicycle and was always seen between 10am and 1pm.

Holland Park is primarily an upmarket residential district, although a number
of countries, including Russia and Uzbekistan, maintain embassies there.

Another Polish waitress at Patisserie Valerie, 29-year-old Susana Ribeiro, also recalled seeing Mr Williams there – the last occasion just after he had returned from a holiday in the US on August 11.

‘If he wasn’t sitting inside at the back, he would park his bike at the lamp-post, sit at the middle table outside and have a coffee,’ she said.

Miss Kolakowska added: ‘Some days he would bring a device with him that looked like an Apple iPad, but was much bigger, and he would watch news or some moving picture on it.’

Vanessa Riley, a pensioner in her 60s who lives in a flat behind Holland Park station, said she saw Mr Williams in two other cafes near the station over the summer.

'Some days he would bring a device with him that looked like an Apple iPad, but was much bigger, and he would watch news or some moving picture on it.’

Mrs Riley became so concerned after she heard of his death she reported what she saw to police. ‘All I can say is I saw him meeting people at these cafes,’ she said.

Last night police refused to be drawn on the significance of the sightings.

Detectives have already tracked Mr Williams’ movements to Holland Park, apparently by checking his journeys on his Oyster ticket, the plastic travel card commuters use on the Underground.

They took away CCTV footage from 29 different cameras at Holland Park station and have since released footage of Mr Williams arriving at the station on August 14 and, the following day, shopping in Harrods.

There were reports yesterday that Mr Williams’ family, upset at the slow progress of the police investigation into his death, want to commission their own post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, security sources said that Mr Williams was recruited by GCHQ after it became aware of his ‘extraordinary prowess at computer games’.

‘He was achieving rare high scores on these espionage and war games that are played on the internet,’ said a source. ‘I know it sounds daft, but this is how he was discovered.’

Two years ago, GCHQ ran an advertising campaign in online games, including Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Double Agent, to tempt web-savvy graduates to become spies.

quote: "The identity of the officer who undertook the unusual police assignment is not known". YEAH I BET IT ISN'T BECAUSE IT WASN'T DONE!

quote: "The practice claimed the life of Tory MP Stephen Milligan, whose body was found in 1994 with a bag over his head and an orange in his mouth". YEAH just like Stephen Milligan MP...

Newsmedianews: http://www.newsmedianews.com/milligan.shtml

ACCIDENT OR MURDER "Was Milligan murdered in connection with his role as PPS to the Arms Minister? He was known as a man who would not be quieted or made to follow a political line that might have fallen outside of his personal beliefs. Did he overhear something in closed circles, or did he speak out about something he knew in similar closed circles?"

James Rusbridger was another former spy and espionarge writer who had unpset many in that world by his research into Hilda Mural's death and other similar instances. He was also found dead as a result of autoasphyxiation.

Seems like quite a popular activity for otherwise normal people, working in or with secret intelligence... to autoasphyxiate themselves.

So the 'official story' about Gareth Williams' assasination is going to be that he "killed himself" (in a solitary sex game gone wrong).

lol

Sex-game spy Gareth Williams suffocated

BRITISH spy Gareth Williams suffocated because he was unable to escape after padlocking himself inside a bag, officials say.

The code-breaker, whose naked body was found in a locked bag in his London flat, had not been murdered but died during a bizarre "autoerotic" experiment, security sources have disclosed.

Government officials monitoring the police case say they believe Williams, 31, suffocated because he was unable to get out of the bag.

Williams worked on highly classified anti-terrorism material at GCHQ, the government's eavesdropping centre at Cheltenham, southern England, and had moved to London for a one-year assignment with MI6, the overseas intelligence service.

Officials said they uncovered evidence that Williams had a record of engaging in autoerotic practices, and that he died when a sex game went wrong..

"The emerging background is something almost certainly autoerotic," said a senior official who has been briefed on the Scotland Yard investigation.

Numerous conspiracy theories regarding the reason for Williams's death have circulated since his body was discovered on August 23.

NOTE: the key to understanding this story is, quote, "Government officials monitoring the police case say they believe Williams, 31, suffocated because he was unable to get out of the bag."

So there you have it, "government officials"... monitoring a police case... telling the media (and therefore both the public and the police) what they believe happened!

Who needs the police, when you have "government officials"!

One being why there were suggestions of sexual violence – the implication being of a homosexual variety – made within 24 hours of the story breaking. There was never any evidence of this but some newspapers ran with the report that bondage equipment was founded in Williams’ home. According to local police officers who later spoke to the press this was utter nonsense. As was the idea that the poor man cruised gay bars – there is a gay bathhouse directly across the road from the MI6 offices – or that he had some sort of guilty and clandestine double life.

This is British intelligence for goodness sake. They know about double lives and investigate every person who works for them. Gay men and women are openly employed by MI6 and MI5 – it is the possibility of blackmail and not sexual preference that determines the suitability of an applicant. In other words, as long as there is nothing to hide there is nothing to worry about. in any case, his relatives have furiously denied that he was a homosexual and say that he is being smeared by the government.

Was it MI6 who discredited Williams or was it a foreign agency? Was his death political and if so was he killed by a friend or an enemy? We may know eventually but likely not for some time. There is and always has been a reciprocal if not symbiotic relationship between the intelligence services and the media in Britain – less a case of the “spooks”, as they are known, exploiting the press than the intelligence people letting it be known that if journalists want good stories and leaked information they need to do what they’re told at other times.

Who was Gareth Williams?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/nov/20/gareth-williams-spy-mi6

When the bagged body of an MI6 agent was found in a bathtub, speculation went into overdrive. Was it suicide? Murder? A professional hit, or a sexual game gone wrong?

Three months after his body was found in a holdall in the bath of his Pimlico flat, police still seem no closer to finding out what happened to Gareth Williams. Photograph: PA/Digital retouching by Jonas Foreman/Guardian Imaging Department

On Tuesday 24 August, a storm was brewing off the North Wales coast. As gusts reached 50mph in the village of Valley, on Anglesey, two sodden police officers stood at a front door on a close of modern bungalows above the beach. They knocked and knocked. Eventually someone ran out into the rain to tell them that Ellen and Ian Williams were away on holiday in the US. While detectives tried to locate the Williams abroad, someone found Ellen's father, John Hughes, who lived around the corner and broke the news: his 31-year-old grandson Gareth, a boy who had always been fit and healthy, was dead. Grandpa John was so distraught that he tripped, cut his head and had to be taken to hospital.

Then Gareth's uncle, William Hughes, who lived on a farm in nearby Trefor village, got the call. "Gareth couldn't be dead? Surely not?" Uncle William sat numbly with Gareth's 86-year-old great aunt before their open fire, staring at the porcelain figures on the mantelpiece. Gareth had been an exceptional boy, selected to work as some kind of analyst for GCHQ, the government's secret listening station in Cheltenham, but the family never talked about it. And neither did Gareth. He'd been home just three weeks earlier, recalled Hughes, cycling the lanes on his race bike before the whole family had got together. But his life was "now being lived a long way from the family in Anglesey," Hughes said, "so some things we couldn't know."

On 25 August, Ian and Ellen Williams touched down at Manchester airport and were met by police, who officially broke the news that two days earlier in London, a man believed to be their son had been found dead. The body had been found padlocked inside a sports bag in the flat where Gareth was staying. It could have been there for up to a fortnight. As they were escorted to the capital, to join their daughter Ceri, there were news reports everywhere: "British spy murdered." Apparently he had been "stabbed to death". According to stories, Gareth was a brain-box, a techie who "worked with codes", as far as they knew. Was he also a spy, they wondered?

For Ellen and Ian, Gareth's death was a horror story that "destroyed" them. For the rest of the world, it was a rare glimpse into the clandestine world of espionage. His death was compared to that of Georgi Markov, the Bulgarian dissident killed by a poison-tipped umbrella in London 32 years before, and the 2006 murder of Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko. Cold war details increased public fervour. The building in which the body was found was owned by a private company, registered offshore, called New Rodina. Rodina was Russian for "motherland". Did real spies read John Le Carré too?

In the midst of lurid speculation, Ian and Ellen Williams reached London. In normal circumstances, they would be required to make a physical identification. However, given the degree of decomposition, police would rely on family photos. Was Gareth murdered, his distraught family asked. Despite launching a major investigation – Operation Finlayson – Scotland Yard were finding it a hard question to answer. One major problem facing investigators was the length of time that the body had lain undiscovered. Another was that they were being blocked by the security services from probing too deeply into Williams's life. Detectives had no idea what Gareth Williams really did or who he was, and had been unable as yet to find anyone close to him. They needed the family's help.

Gareth's sister Ceri, a physiotherapist, and her husband Dr Chris Subbe, a senior registrar at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, told police they had seen Gareth in June, when he had taken them for tea at the Ritz in London to celebrate their second wedding anniversary. He'd been in the capital for more than six months, but couldn't say what he was doing.

The three spent that afternoon "laughing and joking", and afterwards continued to talk frequently by phone. Ceri last spoke to her brother on 11 August, after he returned from a short trip to the US. He now intended to "tidy things up", before returning to GCHQ in Cheltenham on 3 September.

Ceri's dates matched what police learned from Gareth's former landlady, Jenny Elliot, who had rented him a room in her house near Cheltenham for the 10 years he had worked for GCHQ, before transferring to London last year. Gareth had called her in August, asking if he could return. "Like we were going to say no," Elliot says. "He was about the best lodger you could ever have. I mean, you never heard a word from him. He had no TV, record player, or anything."

Ceri had called her brother again about a week later. No answer. She tried repeatedly, becoming worried. Gareth was like a Swiss watch. Now she contacted the police; the security services were already concerned, as Gareth had failed to show for work. On 23 August, at 6.30pm, a uniformed officer was sent to Williams's top-floor flat in a Georgian townhouse in Alderney Street, Pimlico. It was only a few hundred yards from the MI6 headquarters at Vauxhall, and was used by the Secret Intelligence Service as a safe house. A lettings agent who held a spare key showed the policeman in. He was asked to wait downstairs as the officer went up and entered the curtained rooms. The place was "spotless": two iPhones, some sim cards and an Apple notebook sat on a table. Then he entered the bathroom, and found a holdall in the bathtub. Red liquid seeped from it. Inside was a body, in such a contorted position that he thought its "legs and arms had been cut off". Radioing for assistance, the policeman noted that there were no signs a struggle. This was not a robbery or home invasion. It was a "neat job", a euphemism for a professional kill.

Given his clearances and access to classified material, Williams's death triggered alarm across Whitehall. MI5 agents swept through the Alderney Street flat, followed by detectives from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command, assisted by SO15, Scotland Yard's Counter Terrorism Command. Alderney Street was cordoned off as Home Office scientists began processing the scene. Once the spooks had departed, it was down to the murder squad to study the evidence. So far, they had a body in an "advanced state of decay". There was no weapon and no sign of forced entry or a struggle.

Concentrating on the holdall and its contents, detectives established that Williams had not been stabbed, shot or hacked to pieces. On August 25, Home Office pathologist Dr Ben Swift carried out a post-mortem that, together with the first batch of toxicological tests, came back "inconclusive". "If we don't know what to look for, and are not guided by what we see or smell on the body, we cannot find it," says a forensic scientist who worked on the Litvinenko case. "We do 50 obvious poisons. Fifty rare. We can do the isotopes. Litvinenko alerted us to that. But in the absence of a specific direction, the possibilities are as limitless as a killer's imagination… and we cannot test for that."

Detectives set out their theories. One reading of the crime scene pointed to a forensically aware hit man. Slender 5ft 7in Gareth had been stuffed inside the near-airtight red North Face sports bag and placed in the bath, containing any spillage and minimising odours, too. The heating was on, increasing the rate of decomposition, which significantly lessened the chances of retrieving evidence from the corpse.

Or perhaps the body in the bag was evidence of a stage-managed "personal event", masterminded by a controlling individual. Was this a suicide (with Williams acting on his own)? Or a sadistic or masochistic sexual act gone wrong (with Williams engaging in some kind of auto-erotic asphyxiation?). "If you can imagine it, then we are investigating it," a detective said in late August. But what would shape police inquiries was the dawning realisation that Gareth Williams had not been alone.

Returning to the holdall, studying the zips and lock, police became certain that he could not have locked himself inside. And there was further proof that someone else must have been in the flat with him: his front door had been locked from the outside.

Criminal psychologists studied the case. One, who spoke anonymously, thought his death might have been a masochistic ritual that had gone wrong: "For a retentive individual with an ever-green mind like Gareth Williams, always on duty and in control, the bag could have been a furtive release."

The Williams family was adamant that the Gareth they knew would not have behaved this way. And, for now, the family was all the police had, since they had found no close friends or lovers. Another pressing problem with their theories was that detectives had failed to turn up any other suspects or accomplices.

Police, pathologists and forensic investigators agreed on one thing only. They would have to focus on the 12 days between the last call Gareth made to Ceri and the discovery of his body on 23 August. Pulling mobile phone records and credit card transactions, scouring hours of CCTV footage, the Operation Finlayson team dug deep, as ever more lurid stories circulated.

"Murdered MI6 worker Gareth Williams was a secret transvestite who may have been killed by a gay lover, detectives said yesterday… Cops found women's clothing that would fit him at his Pimlico flat in central London." The Sun ran with this version of events, while other newspapers, quoting similar unnamed sources, reported that cocaine had been found, a cache of gay pornography, a small armoury of S&M paraphernalia. Williams was also said to have frequently paid for male escorts.

Senior detectives angrily rebutted the stories. Uncle William in Anglesey thought they read like a concerted smear, and wondered why anyone would want to destroy Gareth's reputation after he was dead.

Like most well-constructed character assassinations, however, this one was founded on a grain of fact that made it that much harder to quash. Detectives had been quietly investigating whether Gareth Williams was gay. They had canvassed witnesses in the Vauxhall Cross village of gay clubs and bars, a short walk from Alderney Street. They had also studied Williams's computers and reading matter, his journals, magazines and computer cache. Despite outright denials from his family, detectives were privately certain that Gareth was gay, although they had been unable to find trace of any sexual encounters. They had also come to believe that his sexual orientation was not central to the inquiry (although his sexual preferences might be). There was no evidence of Williams paying for escorts, buying S&M equipment, using porn or drugs of any kind. "This man didn't really even drink," one frustrated detective said.

The police felt they were being hurried along by other parties, keen for the scandal to go away. "Someone, somewhere, who has access to case material, is saying, 'He's queer and asked for it', rather than waiting for the outcome of the case," one veteran detective said.

In North Wales, the family lit their fires, closed their curtains and privately pondered if anyone had ever understood the real Gareth.

At Ysgol Gynradd Morswyn, Gareth's primary school, a short hop between Valley and Holyhead, head teacher Islwyn Williams remembers him as an exceptional pupil. At five, Gareth made a beeline for the school computer and never left it. While most of his classmates were still playing with Lego, Gareth had a GCSE in maths. At the age of 10, he went to secondary school, gaining A grades in A-level maths and computer science at 13. The school contacted Bangor University, which accepted him as a part-time student on a maths degree course. "He was the best logician… with the fastest brain I have ever met," said Geraint Williams, his maths teacher.

Fellow pupils remember Gareth as a loner. Dylan Parry, 34, thought him "isolated" by his intellect. His abilities shut him off from everyone else. He was naive. Parry believed someone "could easily take advantage of him". He recalled Gareth travelling by train each week to university, while still living at home with Ian and Ellen. Too clever for school. Too young for university.

The family downplay his isolation. They point to their closeness and his sporting prowess. By the time he was 17, Gareth had followed his father into competitive cycling. Keith Thompson, of Holyhead Cycling Club, with whom Ian and Gareth rode, says: "He was a really lovely young man, but wasn't a great conversationalist. Gareth wasn't the sort to go to the pub after a race."

In 1997, aged 18, Gareth left home to begin a PhD at Manchester University, acquiring an advanced level of learning that sat uneasily with his elementary life skills, although his academic mentor, professor Terry Hewitt, believed he could take it: "He was very private and worked well on his own. He was certainly not a 'geek' even if he was reserved." His dissertation focused on computer games. They had always been a private passion, with him achieving an online reputation as unbeatable. Three years on, aged 21, Gareth was approached by the British security services, who the university believes had spotted his precocious online gaming abilities. Hewitt recalled: "In 2000, Gareth came into my office and said, 'I'm going to GCHQ'. He had to tell me, as I was his referee for his vetting." Gareth left Manchester and Anglesey behind to sign the Official Secrets Act.

Williams began an advanced maths course at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, but withdrew the following year, torn between academia and the demands of his new employer. At GCHQ, he was seen as stable, reliable and potentially brilliant, according to a contractor who worked there at the time. Speaking on condition of anonymity, he recalled that GCHQ was a world in which Gareth fitted, working alone, or in small teams, waist-deep in mathematical problems, challenged by cutting-edge technology and real-time problems. Possibly for the first time, he was part of a community of similarly focused individuals who were taken on for their discretion as well as for their brains, intercepting, monitoring and analysing email and telephone calls from around the world. He did feel the pressure, constantly, according to the contractor, who noted that at GCHQ many technicians were as clever or cleverer than Williams.

Work became his life. There was little time for much outside it, something evidenced by how he chose to live, renting a modest room in the Prestbury area of the town. Inside was a single, child-sized bed, a small chest of drawers, three upright wooden chairs and a gas heater – all furnished by Jenny Elliot. Over the decade he spent there, Williams introduced no luxuries, accumulated no clutter. He brought no one back. He rarely even went out after work, excepting an occasional "drink with colleagues". He worked late into the night and rose early. There was something oppressively austere about him, those colleagues thought, something they used to call his "GDR sensibility". So serious and quiet was he that when he did become animated, he "alarmed people with his unusual laugh".

Due to the nature of his work, it is hard for those who met Gareth to describe what he did, and those who talked to us did so having already left GCHQ. But all agreed that, although very capable, Williams was "a middle-ranking" technician "asserting himself in a number of sensitive areas, any one of which could theoretically have brought him into contact with enemies of our state". While GCHQ gathers intelligence from Europe, Africa and Russia, its partners in the US National Security Agency (NSA) also had access to British and European signals traffic at Menwith Hill, a top-secret RAF base near Harrogate, in Yorkshire.

When Williams arrived at Menwith, shortly after the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, GCHQ and the NSA were increasingly focused on the threat of Islamist violence at home and abroad. "Between the UK and the US, we were deluged by the chatter from radicals here and over the Atlantic as they talked on landlines, satellite or mobile phones – with contacts in hot countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan, as well as with Saudi, and hubs like Dubai," one former GCHQ security consultant said. "A group around Williams worked on software to assemble, search and analyse the data, drawing out patterns and meanings."

Williams's elevation within GCHQ came with the "Liquid Bomb" plot, where a group of British radicals of Asian origin were found to be planning to detonate home-made explosives on board seven flights to major north American cities. Intercepting emails and phone calls between these plotters and their contacts abroad, Williams flew between the UK and the US, working at Fort Meade (the NSA HQ, in Baltimore).

Williams was brought into close proximity to US intelligence, Islamic radicals and Middle Eastern agents. He would rub shoulders with the Russians, too, according to a foreign intelligence analyst based in the UK, who described how technology and software honed by GCHQ was deployed in tracking a Moscow-backed sleeper cell to which Britain had been alerted as early as 2003. The case blew up in June 2010 when 10 people were arrested in the US and accused of being part of an espionage ring. One of them, a glamorous 28-year-old called Anna Chapman, had lived for five years in the UK. According to the former GCHQ contractor, "Williams had been obsessed by the case, its methodology and characters."

He was now on secondment to MI6, with its focus on foreign targets and intelligence-gathering, becoming more of a spy than a desk-bound technician, although Williams would shortly be called back to GCHQ to work on a new and ambitious project.

He had been liaising again with counterparts at the NSA, who were part of an effort to create an American cyber defence policy, to prevent the siphoning off of secret or commercially sensitive data or a military style assault on defence or civil systems. Its importance was alluded to last month in a speech by home secretary Theresa May, in which she identified cyber crime as among the pre-eminent future threats facing the UK. A cyber crimes specialist who knew Williams revealed that at the time of his death he was researching British vulnerability to Russian, Turkish and Chinese gangs: "He was already on top of it."

Rogue individuals and nation states, Islamist terror groups and radical loners, extortionists and organised criminals – these were just some of those Williams had observed, investigated, disrupted and provoked. Any one of them was capable of reciprocating, lethally.

Back at the Yard, Operation Finlayson detectives were looking at a vast range of potential threats, but still had few clues, no accomplices or even a plausible denouement for a man whose personal and professional inclinations were to camouflage everything he did.

By September, an exhaustive trawl had come up with some CCTV footage. In the frames released to the public, Gareth Williams saunters by Holland Park tube station in west London at 3pm on 14 August, three days after he had last spoken to his sister.

Staff at the nearby Valerie's Patisserie said that in the week before, a man fitting Gareth's description had spent several hours in the cafe on consecutive days, sitting at the rear with a laptop, receiving occasional visitors. One security source said that he believed Williams was "working" in west London – monitoring one of the many foreign embassies in the area – just as he had been "working" while on his recent "holiday" to the US.

Police released footage of Williams on 15 August, too. At 2pm, he was filmed at a cash machine, visiting Harrods, walking at 2.30pm via Hans Crescent in Knightsbridge towards Sloane Street. Soon after he vanished.

By the end of September, after a second barrage of toxicology tests proved inconclusive, Gareth Williams's body was released and laid to rest in North Wales. On 26 September, the extended Williams clan gathered outside the Bethel chapel in Holyhead to bid farewell. Given the florid rumours that had circulated around his death, they were surprised by the appearance there of Sir John Sawers, head of MI6. Williams had been with his service for less than a year, yet Sawyers told reporters, "I wanted to be here today as the only public face of the Secret Intelligence Service. My deepest sympathies go to the family. Gareth was a hugely talented person, and he was very modest and generous as well. He did really valuable work with us in the cause of national security."

What a difference 30 days make. After an investigation that had failed to turn up the smallest vice, Williams was no longer lampooned but celebrated as a very British spy: modest, capable and known well by no one.

As they buried Gareth, Dr Chris Subbe, speaking for his wife Ceri and the family, recalled how they had laughed and chatted with him at the Ritz, celebrating their marriage and his brilliant career. "The world was ours for the taking," he said. "Yet here I am three months later to the day, trying to describe your rich life with my poor words."

'Dark arts' query over spy's death
Secret agents specialising in the "dark arts" might have tried to cover up the mysterious death of an MI6 spy found in a holdall, a coroner heard today.
Relatives believe a third party was either present when Gareth Williams died or broke into his home afterwards to destroy evidence, lawyer Anthony O'Toole said.
The family is demanding answers after Scotland Yard revealed a key line of its inquiries had been an 18-month DNA mix-up.
Mr O'Toole told a pre-inquest review that Westminster Coroner's Court must establish why there was no evidence of another person in his London apartment when he died.
He said: "The impression of the family is that the unknown third party was a member of some agency specialising in the dark arts of the secret services - or evidence has been removed post-mortem by experts in the dark arts."
Mr O'Toole said Mr Williams "could have been actively deployed" as an agent up to five months before his death.
"In our submission, to properly explore the circumstances of the death, we need to establish the deceased's work," the lawyer said.
Mr O'Toole said relatives wanted to know why the alarm was not raised when Mr Williams initially failed to turn up to work.
By the time officers arrived at his flat, his body was so decomposed that evidence had been lost.
Fresh questions over the cause of his death were raised after it emerged that two areas of investigation were red herrings.
Forensic teams mistakenly flagged up a spot of DNA on Mr Williams's hand in 2010 - before realising just two weeks ago that it matched a scientist on the crime scene, the force told the review.
It also emerged that a Mediterranean couple police wanted to speak to were irrelevant to Mr Williams's death.

link to Chinese coup plot rumours

MI6 'dead spy in a bag' Gareth Williams has been linked to assassination and intrigue behind last week's Chinese coup plot

Bo Xilai allegations over death of Neil Heywood in China 'preposterous'
The suggestion that Bo Xilai, until recently one of China's most powerful politicians, could have fallen out with his police chief over the death of a British businessman, is "preposterous", according to one of his friends.
By Malcolm Moore, Beijing 10:47AM BST 29 Mar 2012
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/9173153/Bo-Xilai- allegations-over-death-of-Neil-Heywood-in-China-preposterous.html
The UK has called for a fresh investigation into how Neil Heywood, a 41-year-old British businessman who knew Mr Bo, died in a hotel room in Chongqing, the city which Mr Bo ruled over until earlier this month.
There are suspicions that foul play may have been involved, and that Heywood's death is linked in some way to a rift between Mr Bo and his police chief, Wang Lijun, and the subsequent dismissal of the politician on March 14.
However, an unnamed source close to Mr Bo's family told the BBC that a smear campaign was under way against Mr Bo and that the recent allegations have been "just preposterous".
He said Mr Wang's relationship with Mr Bo was "normal" just a few days before the policeman fled to the United States consulate in Chengdu, apparently for protection.
He also said that reports that Mr Bo was trying to steer China back into Maoist ideology were wrong. "Any suggestion that Bo Xilai wanted to go back to the Cultural Revolution period is wrong, given that he spent some of that time in jail."
The UK has called for the Chinese police to look again into Heywood's death several times over the past seven weeks, at various diplomatic levels, the Foreign Office has said. However, the Chinese have met the requests with silence.
The Global Times, a government newspaper belonging to the People's Daily stable, has called for the Communist party to be more transparent about what happened in Chongqing.
"We hope the central government will give an authoritative conclusion or release information so that there is less speculation and rumours do not sway public opinion," it said, in an editorial.
However, it warned that "foreign forces" may be trying to stir up the drama around Mr Bo's dismissal to damage the government.
"Many foreign media organisations have connected Mr Heywood's death to what happened in Chongqing recently. We must not let the foreign media be an 'invisible hand' that is capable of affecting China," it said.

"If Mr Heywood's death is related to the events in Chongqing, this will become clear in the investigation. If there is no relation, it will be excluded from the results of the investigation," it said, referring to a general investigation into the events that led up to Mr Bo's dismissal.

China Bans Mircoblog Comment as 6 Detained on Coup Rumor
By Bloomberg News on April 01, 2012
http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-03-30/china-closes-websites-for- rumors-microblog-sites-halt-comments
A ban on Internet users commenting on posts to China’s two largest microblogging sites enters its third day after the government closed 16 websites and detained six people for spreading rumors of a coup attempt in Beijing.
Sina Corp. (SINA) (SINA), the largest provider of the Twitter-like service with more than 300 million registered users, and Tencent Holdings Ltd. (700), the No. 2 player, announced the 72-hour suspension of the commenting function starting at 8 a.m. March 31, citing a need to clear up rumors and illegal information.
Speculation on the Internet on March 20 of a coup attempt helped spark the biggest jump in four months in the cost of insuring against a default on Chinese government bonds. That was five days after Bo Xilai, earlier seen as a contender for promotion to China’s top decision-making body, was removed as party secretary of the municipality of Chongqing.
“Although the punishment was not harsh, it does send a message to other Internet companies to be more cautious in terms of content control,” JPMorgan Chase & Co. analysts Dick Wei and Evan Zhou wrote in a note dated April 1.
Tencent fell 1.1 percent to HK$214.20 in Hong Kong trading as of 10:29 a.m. local time. Sina fell 1.1 percent to $65.00 in Nasdaq trading on Mar. 30.
Government oversight of microblogging services has tightened as they’ve grown in popularity. In December, China began requiring users in cities including Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen to register their real names. That rule will be expanded to other regions, Wang Chen, minister of the State Council Information Office, said in January.
Government ‘Flexing’
While posts have also long been subject to deletion for their content, this ban on comments is the first blanket restriction the services have applied, said Duncan Clark, chairman of Beijing-based BDA China, which advises technology companies.
“It’s a flexing of muscles” by the authorities, Clark said in a telephone interview yesterday. “I can only see it as a gesture.”
China’s lack of a free press and democracy, and the absence of a transparent mechanism to pick new leaders for the second- biggest economy and the largest online population, escalate the risk of rumors and their potential impact.
Authorities detained the six people for “fabricating or disseminating online rumors” that military vehicles had entered Beijing and that there was “something wrong” happening in the Chinese capital, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported on the same day the comment ban took effect, citing Beijing police and the State Internet Information Office.
Companies ‘Criticized’
The State Internet Information Office said Sina and Tencent had been “criticized and punished accordingly” by authorities for a number of rumors, Xinhua said.
A spokesman for Sina yesterday had no comment beyond the original statement announcing the ban. Calls to Tencent weren’t returned.
Bo is a member of the ruling Communist Party’s Politburo and had been mentioned by analysts such as Li Cheng, a scholar at the Washington-based Brookings Institution, as a top candidate for inclusion in the Politburo Standing Committee. That group, now comprising nine men, exercises supreme power.
Membership in the Politburo and the standing committee is determined by bargaining and consensus at the top levels of the party. A congress later this year will pick the next generation of leaders, who may run China for a decade.
Bo had pursued development in Chongqing, one of China’s fastest-growing regions, with a top-down push for social equality and a stronger role for government. Others in the party, including the People’s Daily newspaper and a research arm of China’s Cabinet, have called for a smaller state role in finance and industry.

If this had been done by a foreign intelligence service it would have been milked for all it was worth by our lot.
Yet again we cannot trust a word the Met. control freaks say. Much much more likely to have been murdering a spy 'who knew too much' with a concience to send clear messages to anyone else in intelligence with a concience to keep 'stum' on all the Gestapo-like crookedness or you will end up the same way. MI6 at the heart of the most evil activities on this planet. Remember Gadaffi being buggered with a bayonet and fiitted up for Lockerbie and Yvonne Fletcher's murder?
That's how evil these people are. They think they can turn murdering a potential whisleblower to their own advantage. Only time will tell how wrong they are.

QUESTIONS AT HEART OF RIDDLE
Were secret agents specialising in the 'dark arts' responsible for Mr Williams's death in his Pimlico home?
Is it physically possible that he was able to get inside a North Face holdall in his bathtub before padlocking himself in?
Could a third party have been present when he died despite no trace of DNA or fingerprints?
Why did police remove the front door to his flat if there were no signs of a break-in?
Why was there no sign of struggle on his body?
Could he have been drugged despite normal blood tests?
What exactly did Mr Williams do for the GCHQ listening station - was he an active MI6 agent when he died?
Why had he been placed on secondment in London?
Why did it take colleagues eight days to realise he was missing?
What happened to Mr Williams's possessions that he kept in a shared locker at the MI6 headquarters?
Why have letters gone missing between the coroner and police in recent months?
Has information been withheld because shedding light on Mr Williams's death could jeopardise secret security operations?
Why did he fail to tell his employer that he was undertaking a series of part-time fashion courses at Central St Martins College?
Why did it take forensic teams more than a year to realise a spot of DNA on Mr Williams's hand matched a scientist on the crime scene?

Spy found dead in a holdall 'was being followed in weeks before he was killed'Codebreaker Gareth Williams told friend he was under hostile surveillance
Inquest opens this week in attempt to unravel his mysterious death in 2010

By Simon Tomlinson - 22 April 2012
The MI6 spy found dead in a holdall feared he was the target of hostile surveillance in the days before he died, detectives have revealed.
In a disclosure that further deepens the mystery surrounding the fate of GCHQ codebreaker Gareth Williams, it has emerged he confided in a friend that he was being followed.
His naked and decomposing body was later found in the bath of his home in Pimlico, central London, in August 2010.
The discovery sparked a painstaking investigation, worldwide media frenzy and several outlandish conspiracy theories.
Elizabeth Guthrie, the daughter of a New York stockbroker, told Scotland Yard detectives early in their inquiries of Mr Williams' concerns, it was reported in The Sunday Times.
She is due to give evidence at his inquest this week, which will attempt to unravel the circumstances that led to the brilliant mathematician's demise.
Relatives of the 31-year-old will demand to find out if he was killed in a sinister cover-up by secret services.
Police and security services are convinced his demise was linked to his personal life.
But police sources have hinted that MI6 and GCHQ have been reluctant to reveal what Williams was working on at the time and whether it may have provoked a foreign intelligence service or crime syndicate to come after him.

Sex, spies and seven suspicious deaths- coincidence or conspiracy?
Now living at a secret location overseas, Mr Anderson told me he believes ‘cleaners’ espionage experts trained in removing clues from a crime scene had undoubtedly been into Williams’s Pimlico flat before police were alerted. ‘The presentation of his death as looking like kinky sex is the normal practice. It’s something intelligence always does. ‘Why? It’s because there’s an odd sense of the absurd, and something about it that throws most people off it in disgust. ‘I am on record that if anything ever happened to me a straight man and a positive thinker it would likely be made to look like suicide or that I died dressed like a woman.’ He echoed comments made by Ceri Subbe, Gareth Williams’s sister, who has said her dead brother hated the macho, hard-drinking culture inside MI6. ‘Let me tell you that HQ seemed to have a lot of characters who liked to tease us younger guys today it would be called abusing us. Certainly I couldn’t wait to get out of there.’Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2139799/Sex-spies-seven-suspic ious-deaths-The-murky-waters-intelligence-world--coincidence-conspirac y.html

Sex, spies and seven suspicious deaths: The murky waters of the intelligence world - coincidence or conspiracy?
By Andrew Malone - PUBLISHED: 23:50, 4 May 2012 | UPDATED: 09:21, 5 May 2012

Mystery: There are still questions to be answered over the death of Gareth Williams

There was no dignity in death for Gareth Williams.

As the world now knows, the maths genius and sports fanatic’s decomposing body was found inside a red North Face bag in the bath at his flat in London, not far from ‘Legoland’, the nickname given to the headquarters of the Secret Intelligence Service beside the Thames.

In a bedroom at his Pimlico flat, there was £20,000 worth of women’s clothing, including shoes designed by Stella McCartney and Christian Dior, along with ladies’ wigs and an extensive range of cosmetics.

Mr Williams seconded to MI6 after a ten-year spell as a code-breaker at the GCHQ international surveillance centre in Cheltenham was also, apparently, a visitor to bondage sex websites and was often seen browsing for ladies’ clothes at exclusive stores in Central London.

Such salacious details about the so-called spy in the bag most of it ‘revealed’ by intelligence officers, whose names or identities were kept secret emerged at the inquest to find the truth about the death of the former University of Bangor student, who turned down a place at Cambridge to join the secret service.

Instead, with the reputation of the young spy forever besmirched, the inquest closed this week with no one any the wiser about what really happened at 36 Alderney Street, the secret service safe house where the North Face bag and its gruesome contents were discovered in 2010.

Ruling that it is ‘probable his death was unlawful’, the coroner Dr Fiona Wilcox also revealed it was ‘unlikely the spy’s death will ever be satisfactorily explained’.

Gareth Williams' body is removed from the house in Alderney Str

Throughout the investigation, Mr Williams’ parents have maintained he was murdered by a third party, and the scene set in his flat to sow doubt on his state of mind. They refute suggestions their son was a clandestine cross-dresser.

‘To lose a son and a brother at any time is a tragedy,’ said Ian and Ellen Williams. ‘To lose a son and brother in such circumstances as have been outlined in the course of this inquest only compounds the tragedy.’

Though it will prove scant comfort to the Williams family, they are not the only ones who have found themselves in such a predicament.

They are simply joining others left bereaved and baffled after the deaths of loved ones connected to the intelligence services deaths that, disturbingly, often involved claims of a bizarre, humiliating sexual element.

Indeed, an analysis of the 17 suspicious deaths involving suspected British agents over the past 50 years shows almost a third have involved damning allegations about their sexual proclivities, adding to the air of confusion and mystery around their unexplained deaths.

Mystery: A North Face, Base camp duffel bag, like the one that Gareth Williams was found dead in

Certainly, the ‘spy in the bag’ case has brought agonising memories for the family of Jonathan Moyle, a 28-year-old former RAF pilot-turned-journalist, whose death while investigating a huge arms deal for the intelligence service was similarly blamed on a sex game that went wrong.

He was found hanging naked inside a wardrobe with a pillow case over his head by cleaners in room 1406 of the Hotel Carrera in Santiago, Chile, in 1990.

British Foreign Office officials briefed reporters at the time that Moyle appeared to have died while involved in auto-erotic sex, which involves asphyxiation to the point of black out.

Initial reports also claimed Moyle had no links to the intelligence community. Yet his family refused to accept their son would kill himself accidentally in this sordid way.

After a lengthy legal battle, the British authorities accepted in 1998 that Moyle had ‘probably been killed unlawfully’ and were forced to apologise for the sexual smears.

Stockings: Stephen Milligan

Suspicious: Jonathan Moyle, left, was found naked, whilst Stephen Milligan, right, was found dead in stockings

Moreover, it later transpired Moyle had been secretly recruited to M16 while at Aberystwyth University and had been probing a secret arms deal between Chile and Iraq, just before the start of the first Gulf War in 1991.

The dead man’s mother, Diane, yesterday expressed her condolences to the family of Gareth Williams, saying the smears about her own son are being repeated in this case.

‘My heart goes out to the family of Gareth Williams. Why should they have to hear such cruel untruths being spread about his death?’ she said.

‘Perhaps some would claim it was in the national interest. But we went through exactly the same thing when Jonathan was killed two decades ago.

‘The pain those lies caused me then and now is unbearable. My son was a bright, articulate and decent fellow who was proud to serve his country and his reputation was sullied by a series of comments made by a government official at a reception.’

Mrs Moyle, a frail 81-year-old who lives in the West Country, retreated into ‘dog-walking, decorating and gardening’ after her son’s murder.
Mrs Moyle believes her son was murdered by a contact, but that the intelligence community conspired to make his death look self-inflicted

He had been investigating a company owned by arms dealer Carlos Cardoen that was modifying helicopters, possibly to carry battlefield weapons, to sell to Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

But after his body was discovered, a Foreign Office official alleged Moyle had died during an elaborate act of auto-eroticism.

Mrs Moyle’s late husband Anthony, a former teacher, who died five years ago, aged 78, refused to accept his son had killed himself deliberately or by misadventure.

For eight years, he campaigned for the truth and found Moyle was probably drugged, suffocated and injected with a lethal substance a syringe was found at the scene before being strung up in the wardrobe.

Mrs Moyle told the Mail: ‘I found it impossible to deal with Jonathan’s death, particularly the way in which it was written off as some sort of deviant practice because that suited someone’s ends. I am sure the Williams family feel the same.
Gareth Williams, murdered spy, in a family picture

Secret life: Gareth Williams, murdered spy, in a family picture

‘I spoke to Jonathan ten minutes before he probably died. He was in good spirits, even though he had just got back to discover his room had been ransacked.

‘He claimed suddenly to be feeling very tired he had been served tea by his maid beforehand, which we think was probably drugged. I can’t bear to think what happened to him after that.’

She believes her son was murdered by a contact, but that the intelligence community conspired to make his death look self-inflicted to cover up his involvement in espionage.

‘We knew it wasn’t suicide because he was a young man with everything to live for,’ says Mrs Moyle.

‘He loved his job, he was happy and positive in the phone call and excited about his wedding a few weeks later.

‘Now this other family have to go through what we went through. There are claims Gareth was gay, a transvestite or accidentally killed himself in the same sort of “game” Jonathan was not playing. There’s not a day goes by when I don’t think about Jonathan and what was done to us and to his memory.

‘A mother never gets over the death of a child. It’s a life sentence.’

Nor has the pain lessened for the friends and colleagues of Stephen Milligan, the Conservative MP for Eastleigh and a former BBC presenter, who was found dead at his flat in Chiswick, West London, in 1994.

Even though it has never been proven, there are strong suspicions that Milligan, an Oxford graduate who was once a Sunday Times foreign correspondent, had close links to the intelligence community.

His body was discovered by Vera Taggart, his loyal secretary, who found the 45-year-old dressed only in suspenders and women’s stockings and tied to a chair at his flat in Black Lion Lane near the Thames.

With an electric cord round his neck and a plastic bag over his head, Milligan, also had, bizarrely, a segment of orange jammed in his mouth.

Evidence suggested that his death was due to a sex game gone wrong, though Andrew Neil, his former editor at the Sunday Times, was convinced he’d been murdered.

Even now, 18 years later, Mr Neil remains unconvinced that his death was an accident.

‘I asked the Insight team on the newspaper at the time to investigate Stephen’s death,’ he told me yesterday.

‘I also spoke privately to his past girlfriends to find out if there was anything about him that we didn’t know. All of them said there was nothing about his private life that would make you think the way he died was possible.’

Now chairman of Spectator Magazines, Mr Neil added: ‘I think about Stephen’s death often. He was a great friend, and it has just never all added up to me.

‘I know there have been inquests and reports, and nobody ever really knows someone totally, but I’ve just never been completely sure. But at the same time, I don’t know what the motive would be.’

What makes suspicions even stronger is that just three weeks before Milligan’s death, in a case that was even more outlandish, an M16 agent was found hanging from a beam inside his house on Cornwall’s Bodmin Moor, wearing a chemical weapons suit, black plastic mackintosh and rubber gloves.

His face covered by a gas mask, the body of James Rusbridger, who had worked as a journalist before becoming a spy, was found surrounded by pornographic photos of black women in bondage.

An inquest ruled he died ‘due to hanging, in keeping with a form of sexual strangulation’.

And the list of disturbing incidents goes on. In one of a series of unexplained deaths at GCHQ, the Government’s intelligence listening post, the computer expert Nicholas Husband was found dead wearing a woman’s nightie and bra in 1996 after he failed to turn up for work.

Fellow GCHQ official Kevin Allen, 31, a linguist, was found in 1999 with a plastic bag over his head at home in Cheltenham.

Then there was Stephen Drinkwater, 25, a clerk at the Cheltenham nerve centre, who also died by suffocation and was found dead at his parents’ home.

Coincidence or conspiracy why are bondage, suffocation and sex so often involved in the deaths of such men?

Is it simply that espionage, by its nature, attracts risk-takers with a taste for danger?

Nicholas Anderson has rare inside knowledge: he has worked as a deep undercover spy for British intelligence. He believes spies’ deaths are often made to look self-inflicted in order to cover up any involvement with their undercover work.
Gareth Williams hated the macho, hard-drinking culture inside MI6

Now living at a secret location overseas, Mr Anderson told me he believes ‘cleaners’ espionage experts trained in removing clues from a crime scene had undoubtedly been into Williams’s Pimlico flat before police were alerted.

‘The presentation of his death as looking like kinky sex is the normal practice. It’s something intelligence always does.

‘Why? It’s because there’s an odd sense of the absurd, and something about it that throws most people off it in disgust.

‘I am on record that if anything ever happened to me a straight man and a positive thinker it would likely be made to look like suicide or that I died dressed like a woman.’

He echoed comments made by Ceri Subbe, Gareth Williams’s sister, who has said her dead brother hated the macho, hard-drinking
culture inside M16.

‘Let me tell you that HQ seemed to have a lot of characters who liked to tease us younger guys today it would be called abusing us. Certainly I couldn’t wait to get out of there.’

Having written a book about British secret operations, Mr Anderson says the truth will probably never be known about why Mr Williams died, apart from within a tight circle of his spy bosses.

‘During his inquest, one SIS officer responded to a question by saying: “I can’t respond directly to the question because it goes to what knowledge we did or didn’t have.”

‘That summed it up and made me laugh out loud; it’s always these non-answers.’

But John Ramsey, editor of a website dedicated to intelligence matters, says the service has always attracted oddballs.

‘Most people can’t keep a secret. Yet these men and women have to live another life, while not even telling those closest to them, and that’s clearly a strikingly stressful way of living.’

However, he, too, believes the high number of spy deaths involving deviant practices is no coincidence. ‘In the old days, they used to smear someone by calling them a Walter Mitty or a dubious character.

‘But more and more it seems they use sexual matters to somehow discredit people and muddy the trail about what really happened.’

Perhaps none of this should come as a surprise. After all, those who have worked for British intelli gence pass the M16 motto as they enter ‘Legoland’ on the Thames: Semper Occultus Always Secret.

Cannot believe that a longterm 'safe house' for MI6 operatives would not have had covert internal wall-to-wall internal CCTV & bugging, and external monitoring 24/7. Apart from the female wardrobe and CCTV evidence of Mr Williams purchasing some of the same, he visited gay/fetish/tranvestite websites, and clubs in person, was fillmed gyrating in the nude in women's cowboy boots, evidently plucked his eyebrows, wore masacara, foundation, lip colour and lip-liner and bought a long blond wig in Las Vegas. From this the Coroner concluded that he was 'heterosexual 'heterosexual'. Can't wait to catch a glimpse of her husband! With such flamboyant proclivities Mr Williams would not normally have passed the stringent British Intelligence security vetting required, but consequently may have become 'usefully' deployed as an MI6 'honeytrap' for foreign agents, one that went terribly wrong (for him).

I think this guy was murdered, put in bag so the murderer could go back to take the bag and dispose of the body, cleaning the place up before leaving- BUT - for some reason (illness, death) the killer was unable to return. If I was in the Police Force I would be looking for people who lived in the UK who died who had connections with the victim. Any other explanations are too wierd!

Hmmmm..... read an interesting article the other day which said the murky intelligence services are only too happy for these salacious sex stories/rumours about these poor individuals to filter out to the "MSM" [main stream media] for their readers to devour. The poor reader [always on the lookout for a News of the World-type scoop] is left with the disturbing image of some bizarre sex game that went fatally wrong. All this, of course, deflects from the real perpetrators - the silent, unidentified killers hired by these same intelligence agencies to silence these people forever. It's clear these unfortunate men knew, and were involved in, deep intelligence matters and the agencies concerned now felt they had become dispensable. Hang on, I'll just have to go and answer the knock at my door...........

from someones earlier post

Quote:
A child prodigy who had a degree in maths at 17 and went on to obtain a PhD, Mr Williams had the highest security clearance available to an intelligence officer and was part of a secretive ‘cell’ that created devices that can steal data from mobiles and laptops.

And all around the time of the phone hacking scandals?

Couple of other vague thoughts

maybe its not his body but MI6 needed a body to be found

maybe "they" didnt look for him for couple of weeks because "they" knew he was elsewhere on "their" business..

his "maths" job at GCHQ may have just been his cover

Yes, could be relevant.

Tricky. Lots of people to fool.

Possible that he may have had other official "duties" to attend to...

Tricky to completely change his quite well known background as a maths genius.

I thought it was most telling that his last web accesses (according to the Police)... were to Cycling websites. Doesn't sound very suicidal to me... Rolling Eyes

Aye- Thinking a bit too far outside the box-- must stop it!..

No sign of forced access could imply another keyholder or certainly those with the knowledge of how to get in without causing damage or leaving too much evidence. Both cases could point at MI6 involvement. My top few in no particular order

MI6 or similar

MI6 foreign opposition

Someone linked to his research work--- although that wouldnt necessarily stop his work getting into the public domain as it wouldnt be secret from MI6

Perhaps he knew something that others knew his MI6 bossess wouldnt know and felt they neeeded to silence him.

a tit for tat killing.between the international (or maybe just UK) spook community

You are not above the law Met chief tells MI6 agents as he demands unprecedented access to solve spy-in-the-bag murder
Tests on microscopic human traces on a hand towel in the spy’s flat could identify his killer
Employees at MI6 and GCHQ could face mass voluntary DNA screening within weeks

By Daily Mail Reporter - PUBLISHED: 01:08, 9 May 2012

Britain’s top policeman told MI6 last night that no one is above the law as he demanded unprecedented access in a bid to solve the murder of spy Gareth Williams.

Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe said there was ‘nothing in law’ to stop police making secret agents give statements and forensic samples.

The Scotland Yard chief said employees at MI6 and GCHQ could face mass voluntary DNA screening within weeks.

Detectives believe tests on microscopic human traces on a hand towel in the spy’s flat could identify his killer.

Mr Hogan-Howe said: ‘There is no difference in law, as you would expect if someone has committed a serious crime, no matter who they are.’

Asked if MI6 will grant full access, he said: ‘They do not have to sign up to it, it is called the law. There is no reason why they need to agree to it.’

No one has been arrested over the murder of Mr Williams, whose naked body was discovered in a padlocked bag in the bath of his central London flat in August 2010.

No one has been arrested over the murder of Mr Williams, whose naked body was discovered in a padlocked bag in the bath of his central London flat in August 2010.

His family lashed out at MI6 last week after a coroner ruled he was probably unlawfully killed and the case may never be solved.

Fears remain that the solution to the riddle of his death could lie within MI6 or that a secret agent could even be responsible for the murder.

Detectives investigating the mysterious death of the body-in-the-bag spy believe a killer could have slipped back into his flat through a skylight to cover his tracks, it has been claimed.

Many close to the case believe he was assassinated by a spy working for foreign powers because of his work for MI6 and the US National Security Agency

Speculation over the exact nature of his work has been growing since Foreign Secretary William Hague signed a a document to stop details being released about his job on security grounds.

It has been claimed that MI6 and the government eavesdropping centre GCHQ, to which Williams was attached, have been working on a computer virus designed to disrupt Iran's nuclear programme.

Questions are also being asked as to how MI6 came into possession of a second iPhone belonging to Mr Williams when Police found only one at his flat.
