The crims will do anything to keep their criminality from 'going mainstream' but just consider; how many web users actually go beyond Yahoo News (trendy, frothy, irrelevant), AOL and the like?
With these kind of mindless headlines posted by vacuous cybergrunts (eg: what's on the Soaps next week!) who needs a shadow govt pulling strings? Looks to me most people tangle their own, quite oblivious to the mechanisms of their own destruction...
Until types like us shove something like this in their faces (preferably before the pub opens or the footie kicks off):-
Short of a global EMP (itself quite possible at any moment!), the net won't ever be useless whatever these old mafiosos think; to make it useless would destroy their own 'abilities' - look into setting up your own local DNS for a start - until then use an open DNS eg:
