| Quote: | Police on Jersey have said the suspect in a stabbing incident which left six people dead was related to four of the victims.
All six victims, and the suspect, are of Polish origin, Sky News has learned.
The Polish Embassy in London said the victims were from two families and included three children.
The first family - a mother, her six-year-old daughter and 18-month-old son, and the children's father were described as Polish citizens.
The second - a mother and daughter - were said to be of mixed Polish and Jersey citizenship.
The suspect, a 30-year-old man, is under arrest at Jersey General Hospital where he is in a serious but stable condition after surgery.
The embassy confirmed he is also Polish.
A spokesman said consular officers were in "permanent contact" with Jersey Police, and working to provide support to the victims' families in Poland.
A Polish Mass was held at the St Thomas Catholic Church in St Helier last night, where the Island's Catholic Dean Monsignor Nicholas France said worshippers were shocked and bewildered.
The States of Jersey Police Chief, Officer Mike Bowron, has asked residents to remain "calm and dignified" to allow police to continue with their investigation.
"It will take time to piece together all the evidence, information and witness statements to establish exactly the course of events in what happened here," he said.
"I would ask that people understand that pressure and recognise that there will be no instant answers or results," he said.
"Inevitably, perhaps, such an incident will raise tensions locally.
"I would appeal to everyone to remain calm and dignified and allow my officers to continue with what is a complex, demanding and difficult investigation."
The alarm was raised just after 3pm by a member of the public reporting a multiple stabbing at a flat at Victoria Crescent, Upper Midvale Road, St Helier.
Five people were initially confirmed dead but a sixth victim - a woman - was later also pronounced dead at Jersey General Hospital.
The hospital's emergency department was closed for more than two hours due to the volume of victims being admitted, and staff were called in on days off to help stretched colleagues.
At the scene, witness Andre Thorpe said: "I saw police come running out with a child, it was a small child. I just saw the legs. They went off in an ambulance.
"When the paramedic came back her shirt was covered in blood. We have quick response ambulance cars and two pulled up, grabbed a kit and ran inside." |
Police say they are not looking for anyone else?
