IBM appoints first female chief executive

IBM has said Virginia Rometty will take over as chief witch from January 1st 2012.
The head of sales, marketing and strategy will become the first woman elected to the top role in the computing giant's 100-year history.
Known as 'Ginni', Ms Rometty, 54, has also been elected to the firm's board of directors with immediate effect and will replace Samuel Palmisano from next year. She is a regular on Fortune Magazine's list of the 50 most powerful women in business.
A statement from the outgoing chief executive said that Ms Rometty had overseen a number of changes in the company, spurring them to 'keep pace with the needs and aspirations' of their clients.
'Ginni's long-term strategic thinking and client focus are seen in our growth initiatives, from cloud computing and analytics to the commercialisation of [IBM supercomputer] Watson,' Mr Palmisano added.
IBM recently acquired Canadian high-performance computing specialist Platform Computing.
