Russian and Ukrainian special forces have foiled an assassination plot targeting Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. The suspects reportedly admitted planning to make their move in Moscow, right after Sunday's presidential ballot.
A day after 11,000 people protested by forming a human ring around Mosocw central, simply to campaign for a free and fair election.
Newsnight covered this last night with Boris Berezovsky in the studio and the barely intelligible Putin election spokesman Sergei Markov, protesting far too much in Washington.
Berezovsky says, "It's really strange, every time before an election, it happened in 2000, 2004 and 2008"
Listen to the street interviews where the news is greeted with the usual, ingrained distrust - "It's not possible, just not possible" and "we're in an election campaign and this story is just to get people interested, because many people condemn Putin and condemn his policies, so I think he just thought this thing up himself" and "I think it's a PR campiagn ... to raise Putin's ratings"
The cynicism of ordinary Russian and East European folk always impresses me, vis the contrast to the "you must be a tin foil hat crazy person" often encountered here.
The result of living with an openly corrupt government and civil structure for decades.
If Newsnight and Emily Maitlis can afford such glasnost for Putin and Russia then why is it that the BBC and others always sell US & UK "plots" as really really real ?
Is Russia really the only place on the planet where fake terrorism is used to bury good news and to help with elections ?
