Swastikas daubed on the walls of synagogues. 'Heil Hitler' salutes. People beaten in the streets because they are Jewish. Where could this be? Germany? Eastern Europe? Try Israel. Neo-Nazism has taken root in the very nation forged from the ashes of the Holocaust.

Rivka Zagaron, a 75-year-old Holocaust survivor, left her home in the Israeli port city of Haifa one September morning for her daily stroll along the beach. As she walked, two young men accosted her and shouted: "Heil Hitler!" One of them kicked her, the other cursed her. When she managed to get away, she saw them beating a street sweeper. "I never thought," she said afterwards, "that in our country I would hear the words 'Heil Hitler'."
The attack took place a week after the arrest of eight neo-Nazis in the Tel Aviv satellite town of Petah Tikva, an incident that stunned Israel. Like the old lady, the people of this country had thought that the Jewish state, founded on the ashes of Auschwitz, was immune to the neo-Nazi virus. But the epidemic seems to be spreading, raising serious questions about Israel's failure to adjust to the multicultural society of Jews and non-Jews it has become.
Last week, police arrested two 13-year-old boys on suspicion of daubing swastikas and naked women on the door of a Haifa synagogue. A 19-year-old was charged with setting fire to a booth where Haifa's religious Jews celebrated the Sukkot festival. In Bnei Brak, a predominantly Orthodox town near Tel Aviv, someone painted "Heil Hitler" on a synagogue wall.
According to the police, the Petah Tikva gang met every few days with their leader, Eli Buatinov, the self-styled "Eli the Nazi", to decide who and where to strike next. Buatinov is quoted as saying he would never have children because his grandfather was half Jewish, and he didn't want to father a "piece of trash with even the smallest percentage of Jewish blood".
The gang members' arms are tattooed with Nazi and white power symbols. Though they protest their innocence, they are expected to come to trial later this month on charges of assault, illegally possessing weapons and denying the Holocaust.
Members of the cell, aged 16 to 21, are Russian immigrants. One is Jewish, the rest were admitted to Israel under the Law of Return, which grants automatic citizenship to anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent – the same criterion adopted by the Third Reich for sending Jews to the gas chambers. In the former Soviet Union, their families were defined on their identity cards as "ethnic Russians". In Israel, they are outsiders, frustrated and angry. Neo-Nazism is a way to hit back where they know it hurts.
One of the gang's alleged victims was Anatoly Levin, a 38-year-old Orthodox Jew with a bushy black beard and black hat who emigrated from St Petersburg 12 years ago. He was walking home through a park late one night after a Talmud study session when two teenage skinheads mocked him and made anti-Semitic jokes in Russian.
When they started throwing stones, he threw them back. One of theirs hit his leg, and another struck a passing car. As the driver jumped out, the boys ran off. Levin, a geriatric nurse, continued on his way, but the two skinheads attacked him again, this time with wooden clubs, and broke his right hand. He says he couldn't escape because of his injured leg. The boys fled when he yelled "Police!" and people rushed out to see what was going on.
Zalman Gilichenski, a Russian immigrant teacher who runs a help and information line for victims of anti-Semitism, says neo-Nazism is widespread in the Jewish state. "There are groups in many towns. They distribute cassettes and written material. They began with graffiti, and then graduated to beatings."
The police say there are more individuals than groups. They spray-paint swastikas, vandalise synagogues, taunt recognisably religious Jews and terrorise people who look vulnerable – the homeless, homosexuals, drunks, old people. There is no evidence of a coordinated nationwide movement, no Führer, no Oswald Mosley figure. But the Petah Tikva gang was unusually well-organised.
The Petah Tikva youths were caught after they made videos of their rampages and posted them on a viciously anti-Semitic Russian website. One showed them savagely beating a Thai worker in the Tel Aviv bus station. The site, Format 18, said the images had been sent by "our comrades in Israel".

The use of a website was no accident. Russian racism is going global. The Israeli neo-Nazis draw their inspiration from the thriving radical right in Mother Russia, where Vladimir Putin's Interior Ministry estimates there are 70,000 white-supremacist skinheads. A poll this summer found that 35 per cent of Russians dislike Jews.
Sergei Makarov, a researcher who monitors Russian racism from Jerusalem, says: "You can't understand neo-Nazis in Israel if you don't understand the upsurge in neo-Nazism in Russia. It's nourished by what's going on back home. These people came from there, and they are in touch through the internet."
Despite the Russians' bitter memories of their "Great Patriotic War" against Germany, groups there flaunt the Nazi connection. One, the National Socialist Forum, boasts that 80,000 messages have been posted on its website. It claims 1,500 regular participants and 343 visits a day. One of its contributors calls himself "Dr Goebbels".
Some groups are reported to hold military training camps. They have headquarters, weapons caches and firing ranges. Neo-Nazism is banned in Russia, but tolerated. When violators are prosecuted, the sentences tend to be light.
The Russian ultra-nationalists, nostalgic for the glory of the Czars, target immigrant workers from the former Soviet Asian republics, as well as Jews. The National Socialist Party of Russia posted a gruesome video clip of its members stabbing and decapitating two Muslim "aliens" from Dagestan and Tajikistan. "Our party is a fighting avant-garde of the National Socialist struggle," it bragged.
Another nationalist website, Russkoe Delo ("Russian Cause"), accused the "Zhids" (Yids) of seeking to dominate the world and of encouraging white women to have sex with black men, who infect them with Aids. "The Jews, through their knavish propaganda, infect the minds of white women and inspire them to look at the Niggers with friendliness and benevolence," it wrote. "We must protect our women. We must liberate their minds from the Zhid obsession."
Up to 300,000 of the one million emigrants who flocked to Israel after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989 do not identify themselves as Jewish. The families came because the gates were suddenly thrown open and the economic prospects looked brighter in Israel than Russia. Some are the gentile spouses of people with a half-forgotten Jewish grandparent. Others are the children of previous all-gentile marriages, who have no connection to Jewish history or the Jewish religion. Their divorced parent married a Jew. To complicate things further, in Russia ethnicity is defined by the father's origins, in Israel by the mother's. So a child could be a Jew in Russia and a Russian in Israel.
It is estimated that 20 to 25 per cent of this post-Soviet wave have failed to integrate into Israeli society. Children came to Israel because their parents brought them. Immigrants account for 42 per cent of all school drop-outs, although they are only 11.5 per cent of the total school population. Even those who have been successfully absorbed remember being tormented as "stinking Russians" and told to "get back to Russia", mostly by working-class North African children of a previous mass immigration.
A recent Hebrew University study found that only one third of Russian immigrant teenagers identifies themselves as Israeli. In a society with no binge-booze culture, about 90 per cent of them reported drinking alcohol in the past year. One third said they got drunk at least four times, while 36 per cent admitted using drugs. Almost a third of those who took drugs said they had committed violent acts under the influence.
Marina Solodkin, a Russian member of the Israeli parliament and former deputy minister of immigrant absorption, says: "Neo-Nazi activity is the way a young generation that has not found itself in Israel protests. They've lost their identity. They are not Jews, they are not Israelis. They are Russians who are not accepted, not in schools, not in the families of other children."
Eli Zarkhin, an educational counsellor who runs the Israel Association for Immigrant Children, says: "We're talking about 40,000 children who are not Jewish and identify themselves as not Jewish. It adds one more difficulty. They already have problems in Israel because it's a foreign country, because it has a foreign language, because there are foreign cultural codes, because their parents are busy with their own integration and can't help the children, and because there are no programmes in schools to bring these children closer to Israel.
"There is no Nazi ideology, but there is a lot of anger. We used to see graffiti against the Moroccans. Now we see it against the Jews, who represent for them the Israel that doesn't want to accept them. These teenagers are looking for provocative symbols. They use the swastika because they know it makes Jews angry. It also makes the educational authorities take notice of them. They get attention."
Zarkhin cites the case of Sasha, whose family settled in the Mediterranean town of Ashqelon when he was eight. "He feels he is a Russian, he grew up as a Russian. He had a Russian father and a Russian mother. One day his mother came home and said his father's grandfather was Jewish, so they were allowed to go to Israel. Life there was easier. They could earn more money."
In Ashqelon, Sasha went to a school where half the children were Russian-speaking and half native Israelis. "Nobody accepted him," Zarkhin reports. "Even the Russian-speaking children didn't want to deal with him because he was a goy. They hit him, they called him names. He has problems with Hebrew. His parents are working. So, more and more he started fighting in school. On one occasion he said, "It's a pity Hitler didn't kill you." When we talked to him, he knew nothing about Hitler, except that Hitler killed Jews."

Israel takes pride in fulfilling its Zionist mission and has absorbed more than three million Jews from 100 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas over the past 60 years. But critics protest that a country whose raison d'etre is to be the state of the Jews has yet to come to terms with multiculturalism – the presence of nearly one and a half million Arab citizens, 20 per cent of the total population, and tens of thousands of Russian non-Jews, as well as long-term immigrant workers who care for the aged, till the fields and build the cities.
"Being Jewish doesn't mean to be against other nations," says Eli Zarkhin. "We have a reality. Israel is not the state of the Jews only. We should take it into account, we should deal with it. The government should do more to make others feel they belong. Maybe a state with a Jewish majority, a state with Jewish values of all people being equal, all people having rights, can work too." More bluntly, the Arabs demand "a state of all its citizens".
Anatoly Gerasimov, another advocate of multiculturalism, is trying to give the ethnic Russians a voice through a new lobby, the Russian Centre of Culture and Information. Gerasimov, a dapper 49-year-old Christian who worked as a nurse, denounces successive Israeli governments for failing to adopt a clear and policy on minorities.
"In Israel," he complains, "all problems revolve around Jews and their conflict with the Arabs. National minorities have long been cast to the margins of cultural, public and political life. The state refuses to perceive hundreds of thousands of citizens, working in industry, studying in schools and universities, serving in the army as full members of society.
"Every fourth citizen of Israel is non-Jewish, but open any newspaper and you will not see
anything about our non-Jewish holidays, about the history of our presence in the Holy Land, or about our communal activities. Last year our Russian community participated in an international youth sports festival in Moscow. Our boys and girls brought gold and silver medals back to Israel. Not a line was written about it in Israeli newspapers. Even Russian-speaking MPs gave them no encouragement.
"Israel has problems with non-Jews? Israel has one greater problem – the absence of a desire to cooperate with us in solving the vital issues of Jews and non-Jews living together in the Holy Land."
Marina Solodkin, the immigrant MP, says that many of the mixed Russian families came to Israel because they wanted to be one thing or the other. "If they had Jewish blood, they wanted to be Jewish." Israel, she protests, has not made it easy for them. The Orthodox rabbis still run the conversion process. They try to impose a pious way of life that is alien to most veteran Israelis, who manage to be both Jewish and secular. Converts are expected to keep the Sabbath and observe kosher dietary laws. Inspectors reserve the right to make random checks that they are not back-sliding.
Women are ordered to stop wearing trousers, which are regarded as masculine and thus immodest. Girls are forbidden to join the army, though it is widely accepted that military service offers their best route to integration. The rabbis don't want them hanging out with the opposite sex. "Not everyone," Solodkin insists, "wants to live the strict Orthodox way of life."
Coalition constraints keep the more liberal Reform rabbis at arm's length. Ehud Olmert, like previous prime ministers, needs the support of at least one Orthodox religious party to stay in office. These groups fight every effort to recognise Reform Judaism.

So far, anti-Semitic hate crimes are restricted to the young. But some older non-Jewish immigrants quietly share their smouldering resentment at the discrimination and ostracism they have experienced. They seek comfort in old prejudices.
A Russian-language bookshop near Jerusalem's Mahaneh Yehuda market stocks anti-Semitic books and Holocaust denial material among its shelves of novels, thrillers, science fiction and DVDs. They are on open display. One, What We don't Like about Them, an anti-Jewish tract by Vasily Shulgin, first published in 1929 and reprinted in 2005, has the exiled Jewish oligarch Boris Berezovsky on its cover. Another, by Alexei Mukhin, is dedicated to "Jewish Elites". It features the familiar smiling face of Chelsea's Roman Abramovich.
Vladimir, the bookshop owner, a mild-mannered intellectual who asks us not to publish his second name, reports a steady demand from older customers. He draws the line at Hitler's Mein Kampf and the notorious century-old forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which purports to map a Jewish takeover of the world. "As for the rest," he shrugs, "I'm in the business of selling books."
For the 75 to 80 per cent of Russians who made it, the post-Soviet immigration has been a success story. Most of them were educated people with modern skills. Once they got over the initial difficulties, they found jobs. Israel's orchestras are full of Russian musicians. Russian doctors and nurses man its hospitals. Engineers and mathematicians work in the country's high-tech industries.
Lisa Rubchinsky, a 29-year-old hairdresser who came here alone when she was 18, says: "At first I felt hatred of Russians in the street, in the market. But I'm a strong person. I know how to defend myself. If you've chosen to come here, you have to try to be part of this country. Don't blame other people."
She admits that it's been easier for her than for some of her friends. Unlike them, she doesn't look Slavic.
The Law of Return: immigration and Israel
The Law of Return was first passed by Israel's parliament, the Knesset, on 5 July, 1950. It established a system for allowing foreign nationals to "make aliyah" (emigrate to the country) and claim citizenship.
Originally, the right to become an Israeli was restricted to practising Jews. But an amendment in 1970 broadened the definition to anyone who had just one Jewish grandparent. The move aimed to help all those who had been defined as Jews (and hence persecuted) under the Nuremberg Laws during the Nazi Holocaust, and to bolster Israel's Jewish population against the perceived demographic "threat" of a rising Arab population.
Following the collapse of Communism, there was an explosion in the number of emigrants from the former Soviet Union, where authorities had previously placed heavy restrictions on the numbers of Jews who could leave the country. Since 1990, more than a million Russian migrants have made the move, forming a significant minority in a country of only seven million.
Many of these newcomers have claimed that they face discrimination in the job market and in wider Israeli society, fuelling a sense of alienation. Opponents, for their part, argue that many of the new arrivals have only a tenuous connection to Judaism and affinity with the Jewish community.
Other major ethnic groups in Israel include Ashkenazim (European Jews), Mizrahim (descendents of Jewish communities elsewhere in the Middle East), Sephardim (those from the Iberian peninsula), and Ethiopian and Indian Jews, not to mention the one million-plus Israeli Arab community. There are also a large number of non-Jewish immigrant workers, who also claim to have faced discrimination. _________________

Every two weeks the Ahava shop near London's Covent Garden plays host to a demo protesting against the theft of Palestinian land and the passing-off of produce made with Palestinian bounty, as Israeli. This time, the Zionists came too.

In celebration of the recent court victory in which four campaigners were acquitted for blockading the Covent Garden Ahava shop in 2009, approximately 60 protesters gathered outside its doors in Monmouth Street, central London, to celebrate and continue promoting boycott, divestment and sanctions against the Israeli occupation. While demonstrators were met by the usual Zionist counter-demonstrators, on this occasion they arrived flanked by the openly racist English Defence League.
Ahava, the cosmetics retailer and spa outlet, manufactures its products on the illegal Israeli settlement of Mitzpe Shalem. It has openly flouted tax requirements by exploiting the EU-Israel trade agreement and violates UK DEFRA guidelines in respect of proper labeling. The campaign against Ahava supports the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions as a global nonviolent means to challenge the Israeli Occupation of Palestine and the ongoing siege upon Gaza.
At the outset the small group of around ten EDL members remained close to the Zionist contingent of Ahava supporters, handing out leaflets. Over the course of the demonstration they began to take an increasingly prominent role, culminating with the unfurling of a flag of St. George and chanting “E-E-EDL.” This was accompanied by racist remarks towards a number of Ahava protesters who were of Asian/Middle Eastern descent. What was more surprising, and unsettling, was the apparent unwillingness of the Zionist contingent to distance themselves from the EDL.
Vice chair of the Zionist Federation of Britain Jonathon Hoffman was present and took no action to put some distance between the two groups. This comes only days after a recent report in the Israeli paper Haaretz claiming that the Board of Deputies of British Jews were not affiliated with the EDL and did not want anything to do with them. The stark contrast between the formal statement and the reality in front of the Ahava shop, in which senior members of the ZF stood along side EDL members, undercuts any public statements and underlines the racism inherent in the Zionists’ agenda.
The EDL’s history of far right opinions and racist chanting and abuse — as well as their violence and hatred towards Muslim communities — have earned them a variety of unflattering labels, including ‘fascist’. Jewish groups have long since been targeted by right-wing, racist and fascist groups, so to see the Zionists and the EDL united against Palestinians illustrates that as far as the Zionist Federation is concerned, the enemy of one’s enemy may become an ally no matter what they stand for. That they were welcomed by the Zionists may be shocking to some, but might also be reflective of their desperation for support in the UK.
This is not the first instance of the two groups coming together in support of each other. In the immediate aftermath of the brutal attack on the Mavi Marmarra flotilla by Israeli commandos in which nine human rights activists were murdered, the EDL joined up with Zionists outside the Israeli embassy in Knightsbridge to show support for the Israeli state’s violent actions. In addition, the EDL marched to Downing Street two weeks ago with Israeli flags being held alongside British and St. George flags.
Despite their presence and the racist slurs they shouted at members of the Ahava demonstration, the protest took place without violence. The verbal abuse hurled by EDL members and their Zionist partners was met with a series of police cautions. Numerous members of the public stopped to chat with Palestinian solidarity activists and showed support. A small brass band played music to entertain the masses and build a celebratory spirit as many people chanted for justice and for an end to the sale of Israeli and Settlement produce.

Since the publication of the original report, a few points have been raised which are felt important to incorporate.
1) In noting that the event passed without violence, it is important to recognise there was no explicit physical violence. Racism is a form of verbal violence and must be acknowleged as such. Similarly, although no physical violence took place, the EDL did threaten physical violence to at least two members of the Ahava protest.
2) Regarding police cautions: There were a total of five referals for prosecution to the Crown Prosecution Service for racially aggravated offences.
The Boycott is certainly gaining traction but so is the zioprop. An acquaintance outside Ahava thought it might be a good idea to hand out copies of the Goldstone Report - she passed out 9 copies of the executive summary* before the Zio's caught on and got 'verbally abusive'. From what I can gather (strictly 'hearsay' at present) MI5 was also 'in attendance' - what on Earth for?

Exposed! The EDL and Its Zionist Connection

Birmingham police lost control of a fascist demonstration in the City Centre on Saturday. The march organised by the Islamophobic English Defence League quickly spilled out of control as hundreds of EDL thugs bussed in from all over the country marched in the city and broke away from the two sites designated for the march, provoking violent clashes with local people and anti-fascist demonstrators. They threw bricks and bottles at the locals and chanted racist and Islamophobic abuse as they marched towards New Street in the city centre. Their ruse is that they were marching against 'extremism' but their motives were soon revealed by their racist chanting and by the unfurling of an Israeli flag by the EDL skinheads.
The fact that a Jewish States flag was unfurled by the EDL highligted its true nature. Afterall how many young far right British racists walking the council estates of England are also ardent supporters of the Jewish State of Israel? Our guess is not many.
Zionist groups it seemed panicked when the image above was picked up by the news and Muslim groups. The argument they put forward was that racists has planted the flag to upset the Muslims. A poor argument indeed, as if the Muslims were happy to have the racist EDL around till they unfurled the Israeli flag, which of course would have pushed them over the edge. One wonders why they did not unfurl the American flag, seen on many television channels as the flag of choice to burn in Middle Eastern countries? If it was about simply making Muslims angry, the bricks and bottles being thrown at them would have sufficed surely? In short it was a desperate attempt by the Zionists to cover their tracks after the blunder was picked up.
Another rightwing group, called the BNP, also considered the EDL highly suspect. For a group who had roughly the same sympathies, the accusation that they were Zionists seemed telling indeed.
If proof was needed, it revealed itself in their actions sometime later. The EDL chose to march against a pro-Palestinian march called Al-Quds. It seemed the EDL, was for some unexplained reason, very interested in fighting pro-Palestinian groups marching against Israeli occupation.
Could it be that the Zionist desire to polarise society against the Muslims, to ensure the Muslim community within Europe could not grow to challenge Israel's total political domination in western political circles, had driven them to infiltrate or even create the EDL?
The BNP shared the Zionists anti-Muslim sentiment, but not their foreign policy objectives. They hated Jews as much as they hated Muslims. Was the EDL the perfect answer, killing two birds with one stone, undermining the BNP and drawing support away from them whilst continuing to polarise the community against Muslims, thus controlling the far right's agenda?
The EDL is not all that it seems and proves once again, that the chief driver of Islamophobia and polarisation within Britain, comes not from the BNP but extreme right wing Zionists who have a foreign agenda.

A spokesperson for David Cameron on Friday refused to comment on the rationale behind the British prime minister’s decision to step down from his position as honorary patron of the Jewish National Fund (JNF). The move comes as pressure on the JNF steps up in Britain, and is being hailed by activists as a big victory in the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign.
Campaigners with activist group Stop the JNF had written to Cameron earlier in May calling on him to cut his links with the JNF. Registered as a charity in the UK, the JNF is involved in development of illegal settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, the destruction of Palestinian Bedouin villages in the Naqab (Negev) inside Israel and stands accused of institutionally racist practices and complicity in ethnic cleansing since 1948.
Cameron’s press office told The Electronic Intifada that the decision had been made after a review of all the charities Cameron supported: "This is not a particularly recent decision," said a spokesperson on Friday. In a short statement Thursday, the prime minister’s office had said the JNF was one of a "number of charities" Cameron stood down from following the review which was undertaken "[f]ollowing the formation of the Coalition Government last year."
The statement did not specify any reason for the move. When asked if it was related to the JNF’s involvement with Israeli settlements in the West Bank (which the British government, in line with international law, considers illegal) the spokesperson said they were "not going to get into any further details."
The spokesperson implied that Cameron is only involved in local causes: "The charities that he’s currently involved with will normally be charities in his [local parliamentary] constituency … or a couple of national campaigns. There aren’t really any that deal with specific issues in specific foreign countries," he stated. He would not comment on why this had changed after Cameron had become prime minister.
The JNF’s UK office refused to comment on the matter. A report in The Jewish Chronicle on Thursday suggested "time constraints" were behind the move, although the email statement did not mention this ("Cameron leaves the JNF," The Jewish Chronicle, 26 May 2011). On the Spectator website Monday, staunchly Zionist columnist Melanie Philips used her blog to describe the move as "the latest act of aggression against Israel by HMG [Her Majesty’s Government]," and suggested that the time constraints justification are "unconvincing" ("Cameron drinks the Kool-aid," Spectator blogs, 30 May).
The spokesperson refused to name the other groups, saying he didn’t "think it would be very fair on the other charities that he stepped down from to name them." While the statement claimed a "full list of all the charities and organizations the prime minister and Mrs. Cameron are associated with is published on the Cabinet Office website," several searches for this list were unsuccessful. The spokesperson declined to provide The Electronic Intifada with a link to the list.
According to a list on the JNF’s UK website, the move leaves former Prime Minister Gordon Brown as the only serving member of parliament left as honorary patron to the group. Other figures on the list include staunch supporters of Israel such as former prime minister and current Quartet envoy Tony Blair and Israeli government figures such as Shimon Peres. An open letter signed by campaigners calling for current Labour leader Ed Milliand to "break from this tradition" of party leaders patronizing the JNF was printed by The Guardian in October. So far he has not followed Brown, Blair or Cameron (who became patron while opposition leader).
The JNF is a quasi-governmental organization that controls large swathes of state land in Israel. This land is reserved for the use of Jews only — to the detriment of Israel’s 1.5 million Palestinian citizens, and the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who were expelled from that land by Zionist militias in 1947-48.
The JNF has in recent years tried to re-brand itself as an environmentally-friendly charity, an effort critics have branded "greenwashing." But pressure on the JNF mounted Saturday as Friends of the Earth (FoE) Scotland, at its annual general meeting, voted to endorse the Stop The JNF campaign. Chief Executive Stan Blackley said FoE Scotland was "pleased" to join the call for revocation of the JNF’s charitable status, according to a Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) press release ("Friends of the Earth Scotland endorses call …," Stop the JNF website, 28 May).
The JNF has been connected with ethnic cleansing and abuse of Palestinian rights on both sides of the green line — the internationally-recognized armistice line between Israel and the occupied West Bank.
Journalist Max Blumenthal reported that the fund recently "set its sights" on al-Araqib in the Naqab (or Negev) desert. The Bedouin village has been destroyed 21 times since July 2010 so that the JNF can "develop" the area as part of the government’s Judaization campaign ("On Land Day, the Jewish National Fund’s Racist Legacy is Exposed," MaxBlumenthal.com, 30 March 2011). The JNF is also involved in funding projects in illegal West Bank colonies such as Sansana in the south Hebron hills.
According to Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, as of 2007 the JNF owned a total of just over 2.5 million dunams of land (a dunam is the equivalent of 1,000 square meters), the majority of which was seized from Palestinian refugees.
In the course of a 2004 legal challenge by Adalah, the JNF confirmed in a response to the court its discriminatory policies against non-Jews: "The JNF is not the trustee of the general public in Israel. Its loyalty is given to the Jewish people in the Diaspora and in the state of Israel … The JNF… does not have a duty to practice equality towards all citizens of the state" ("Land Controlled by Jewish National Fund for Jews Only," Adalah press release, 29 July 2007).
Stop the JNF, which emerged in May of last year, is a working coalition of different campaigning groups including the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network and the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC). The campaign will be holding a series of workshops in London on 4 June.

Scottish Court to Rule on Whether Anti-Israel Protesters are 'Anti-Semitic'

Cupar, Scotland--This county town of Fife, is not exactly a news hot spot. Probably the last big story here was the landing of Italian balloonist Vincenzo Lunardi nearby in 1785 at the end of a 43-mile flight from Edinburgh.
However the small town’s sleepy Sheriff court is about to host a key legal case involving a US student from New York and two anti Israeli protestors who have been charged with racism.
For the information of US readers, in Scotland the Sheriff isn’t some John Wayne figure with the star on his chest, but is rather the bewigged judge presiding over the local court.
This case centers on an incident at nearby St. Andrews University, where two students are facing racially aggravated conduct charges after allegedly making comments and gestures critical of the State of Israel
and its flag.
Press reports are already in danger of prejudging the case, with headlines such as the one reading "St. Andrews University students in court to face anti-Semitism charges" that ran in the local daily, The Courier.
According to one of the charged students, Paul Donnachie, "Whilst in the room at the student residences of an individual who I considered a friend, Chanan Reitblat, I placed my hands down the front of my
jeans and onto an Israeli flag which belonged to him, accompanied by comments to the effect that Israel is a terrorist state, and is guilty of many civilian deaths."
He continued, "The action was not malicious. However, it sparked a great deal of political debate amongst our group of friends within our Hall of Residence, whereby the nature of the State of Israel was
discussed."

The following day, after hearing that Mr Reitblat had been upset by his actions, Paul says he "wrote a letter stating that, whilst I would not apologize for my opposition to the actions of the Israeli state, I
would apologize for the manner in which I chose to mediate my political opinions on this occasion."
Despite this conciliatory action, the following day police officers arrested both Paul and his friend Simon Colchester and held them in custody for 36 hours before they were made to appear in court charged with "threatening and abusive behaviour," which was subsequently amended to the more sinister charge of "racially aggravated conduct," a violation of the Criminal Law.
Basically the case turns on whether to criticize Israel or its flag is the same as anti-Semitism. The case is the more surprising, given that last year a very similar charge in Edinburgh was tossed out by the courts.
In that instance, five protestors who had disrupted a performance of the Jerusalem String Quartet in Edinburgh in 2008 were charged on a similar basis, with the state alleging that they were guilty of racism for protesting against the fact that performers in the group were also members of the Israeli military.
Dismissing the case last year, Sheriff John Scott made it clear that is entirely legitimate to criticize the Israeli state, its army or other institutions, without being guilty of anti-Semitism.
However when the two St. Andrews students were in court last month the Procurator Fiscal (prosecutor) claimed to be unaware of the earlier Edinburgh case.
Equally alarming is the fact that when protestors demonstrated outside the court, a police sergeant spoke to them warning them that he and his colleagues would not tolerate them giving "racial abuse".
Outraged campaigners firmly told the officer that they took grave exception to the idea that they were potential racists and a protest has been made to the police chief about this.
The St. Andrews case will now be heard in late August, and since Reitblat, the American student, has now returned to the US, he will either have to be brought to Scotland, presumably at public expense, or questioned by video link.
The case comes at a time of growing support for the Palestinian case in Scotland with, for example, the country’s trade union federation, the Scottish Trades Union Congress, supporting calls for a boycott of Israeli products.
It is also potentially embarrassing for St. Andrews University, which hosts a major department which studies terrorism and which is widely funded by outside donations, including many from the US.

The far-right English Defence League showed itself to be boot boys for the rich and powerful today after revelations that wealthy backers are bankrolling the organisation.
The extremist group, which has been cited by Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik as an inspiration and has links with anti-Islamic groups abroad, pretends to be a grass-roots community organisation - but it has been funded by millionaire Ann Marchini and former investment fund director Alan Ayling.
The aim of the pair was to influence and help shape the organisation to make it appear more credible in the political arena.
Ms Marchini operates a buy-to-let empire in Highgate, London, and is believed to operate under a pseudonym - although her lawyers deny this.
She is a member of the far-right British Freedom Party and friend of chairman Paul Weston.
The EDL is looking to stand in elections in the near future and Ms Marchini is believed to have been trying to foster closer links between the two organisations.
Mr Ayling, who has been operating under the name Alan Lake, used to be director of Pacific Capital investment and is an IT expert.
He was questioned last year by Scotland Yard detectives into possible links he had to Breivik.
Mr Ayling denied any such links and said he believed the brutal massacre to be "wrong."
He said on Norwegian immigration policy: "You let dangerous people who will not share your values, who will destroy your society and take your freedom. You will have to pay the price for that."
Former UK Independence Party candidate Mr Weston tried to distance himself from the situation, describing Mr Breivik as "a psychopathic lunatic."
Speaking to the Morning Star about the story which first appeared in the Sunday Times, Hope Not Hate spokesman Matthew Collins pointed out that the EDL has established links with the anti-Islamic "global crusader movement."
"Alan Lake has become less important, in terms of a global crusader movement," said Mr Collins.
"The EDL has now jumped into bed with Paul Weston - quite a wealthy man."
Mr Collins said he was not worried about the EDL standing in elections as it would "poll very badly" and had less than 1,000 members - well down on the group's own official estimates.
But he said fascists and the far right in Britain had changed their focus in recent years.
"It's not about nazis and hating Jews," he said.
"It is about extremist Christian identity political types who see themselves as crusaders against Islam.

A man who allegedly threatened to bomb Asian restaurants and carry out an 'Oslo-style' attack has been arrested, according to a group which monitors the English Defence League.
Northumbria Police said a 29-year-old man from South Shields, South Tyneside, named locally as Kenny Holden, was held for questioning on Saturday on suspicion of assault and possessing racially inflammatory material.
He has been bailed pending further inquiries, a force spokesman said.
According to the EDLNews website, which claims to 'reveal the truth about the English Defence League', a man posted on Facebook that he had 'got a pipe bomb just 4 Ocean Road' - an area of South Shields known for its curry houses.
The writer abused Muslims and then added: 'GIVE ME A GUN AN AL DO YOU ALL OSLO STYLE'.
The website claimed the man held by police was a member of the EDL.
Norwegian gunman Anders Behring Breivik is currently on trial for mass murder after killing 77 people last July.
His Oslo car bomb killed eight before he went on to massacre 69 more people on Utoya Island.
Holden - who is believed to be a member of the EDL’s South Shields division - was arrested on suspicion of assault and possessing racially inflammatory material on Saturday before he was bailed pending further inquiries.

A police spokesman said the arrest for assault relates to a domestic incident and is unrelated to the alleged racial offence.

'There is no place for any sort of racial incitement or use of social networking to place inappropriate comments and we take incidents such as this extremely seriously.
'I'd like to reassure the public that a full investigation is taking place into this allegation.'
The spokesman added: 'Extensive inquiries have been carried out and there is no apparent threat to the general public.'
The arrest comes just days after an anti-terror operation was carried out over the posting of alleged racist postings online.

THESE are the pictures that reveal the English Defence League has infiltrated the British Army.
Last night the Ministry of Defence launched an inquiry after we presented them with evidence of two serving soldiers who openly support the racist group and who have attended violent marches.
The EDL has become notorious for its far-right rhetoric and provocative demonstrations that have seen hooligans clash with police across the country.
Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik, 33, claimed to have attended their events.
Their message of hate is ignored by the majority of troops but we can reveal a number of soldiers have embraced the EDL’s offensive views.
Yorkshire Regiment squaddie Cavan Langfield, 18, of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, began training as a soldier aged 16.
The Army had high hopes for him and he even posed with his Colonel-in-Chief Prince Andrew for a local newspaper.
But the MoD was shocked to learn Langfield has become a dedicated supporter of the EDL, travelling across the country to attend marches and boasting online of his violent activities.
Before its provocative march on Tower Hamlets, east London last year, he posted on an EDL website, declaring: “Lets f**king have it! Buzzing tomorrow.”
On his Facebook account he has pictures of himself posing with automatic weapons in full uniform next to images of EDL demonstrations. He names his political views as “English Defence League”.
Under one picture of EDL members fighting police, the thug boasts: “Was fun when we had it with the coppers. They hit our mate for no reason so we all started scrapping.”
His online pal Brandon Neal, 18, is a British infantry soldier training in Canada before being deployed to Afghanistan. He openly promotes his links to the far-right group.
Neal, from Devon, uses social networks to keep in touch with EDL members and posts pictures of his Army kit and weapons alongside images of their protests, listing his interests as “football hooliganism” and being an “Islamophobe”.
On one picture of Neal’s rifle, a friend suggests he should take the weapon to an EDL march in Dewsbury, West Yorks, which was held recently. His chilling reply was “We’ll need em”.
Neal describes himself as “EDL all the way” and has been pictured taking part in the group’s “patrols” in Yorkshire.
The organisation’s hate-filled message has made it all the way to Afghanistan, where one masked soldier posed in front of an EDL flag with a rifle.
Further pictures from the same sickening display are being distributed by the EDL as propaganda.
Army sources indicated Langfield and Neal will face the “hairdryer treatment” today.
The MoD said the matter had been “dealt with internally”.
A spokesman said: “The Army is clear that racism of any kind is unacceptable.
“Instances of such behaviour brought to our attention are investigated and appropriate action taken, up to and including dismissal.
“While personnel are free to join political parties, they are expected to abide by our values and standards in all they do.”

Stephen Garvey, 28, was arrested on Wednesday for conspiracy to murder the female police officers and is being questioned over making the hoax phone call which lured the women to their deaths.
Garvey, a Manchester City fan, lives on the Hattersley estate in Mottram, Greater Manchester, and lists himself as a fan of the English Defence League, the right-wing organisation, on his Facebook page.

The man known as Alan Lake, a key strategist and funder behind the racist English Defence League (EDL) is out of his job at a major international development bank.
The news comes the week after another shadowy EDL strategist, Chris Knowles, was sacked by Leeds council.
Lake, whose real name is Alan Ayling, masterminded the EDL’s strategy of bringing together football hooligan firms into an anti-Muslim army of racist street thugs.
He was suspended from his post as a database team manager at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in December last year after his real identity was exposed.
The powerful bank was set up by international treaty to fund development and privatisation schemes in Eastern Europe and Central Asia following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
The EBRD has now confirmed that Ayling’s employment “has ended”—and that he had not returned to the bank since his suspension last year.
Ayling was believed to earn around £70,000 a year plus bonuses in his post at the EBRD. But he is unlikely to be hard up following his exit.
He lives in a plush £500,000 flat in London’s prestigious Barbican development, and owns a second flat in nearby Bridgewater Square.
Until January last year, Ayling was a director of City investment fund Pacific Capital Investment Management, which was wound up last August.

And he has had a string of other company directorships, ranging from his 1980s data processing consultancy Lakerange—a possible source of his “Lake” alias—to the now-dissolved family firm Ayling Engineering.
As Alan Lake, he is a key figure in the shadowy network of far-right and anti-Muslim racist groups who call themselves “counter jihadists”.
He has been interviewed as a witness as part of the Norwegian police investigation into the massacre by fascist gunman Anders Behring Breivik.
Although Ayling denies having met Breivik, he has admitted meeting the deeply Islamophobic Norwegian blogger Fjordman—real name Peder Jensen—who is cited repeatedly in Breivik’s manifesto.
Ayling’s 4 Freedoms website is now his organisational hub. He has used the site to air predictions that the UK would fragment into “Islamic enclaves” in 20 to 30 years’ time and discuss the possibility of executing David Cameron, Nick Clegg and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
He also described Breivik’s massacre of 76 mainly young people as chickens “come home to roost”—remarks that led to his falling out with EDL leaders last year.
But it was at Ayling’s Barbican flat that the EDL was established in 2009, according to disaffected founder member Paul Ray.
The founding meetings brought the “counter jihadists” together with Ray, Stephen Yaxley Lennon—aka Tommy Robinson, the former BNP member who now leads the EDL leader—and his cousin Kevin Carroll.
Ayling had hosted and spoken at EDL demos. He has admitted funding the EDL, telling Norway’s TV2 channel: “I have given some money to help some EDL things happen.”

Bristol police have defended their actions after officers in riot gear halted a walk in support of the Armed Forces charity Help for Heroes, sparking a five- hour stand-off in the St George area of Bristol.
Officers refused to let the fund-raisers march into Lawrence Hill and Easton on Saturday night for fear of stoking up "community tensions" and arrested 19 people following a lengthy stand-off at a pub.
The incident came in the wake of the death of Gunner Lee Rigby in Woolwich and a series of minor incidents across the country.
Tensions have been running high and police have been quick to deal with any perceived flare-ups in the days following the brutal killing of the soldier.
Police chiefs in the city have called for calm but those involved in the walk blamed officers for the confrontation and accused them of over-reacting.
However, there were also claims that the controversial English Defence League were behind the confrontation.
The alarm was raised after messages about the march were posted on the internet and word spread about the potential for trouble.
Police later described some of those taking part as drunk and violent and added they were forced to act to protect the "wider community" of Bristol.
Deputy Chief Constable Rob Beckley said: "Peaceful protest is acceptable but we will not tolerate criminal or anti-social behaviour towards any members of our community.
"We had to take some positive action to put a stop to behaviour that was criminally offensive to others."
Riot police, vans and horses took over Church Road on Saturday evening as an operation was launched to contain the group of 30 to 40 men and women who barricaded themselves inside the St George's Hall pub.
Reinforcements from neighbouring forces were drafted in as dozens of officers spent the night trying to keep the situation under control.
Police arrested 19 people during the long evening – two for violent disorder and the others for public order offences. The police later defended their tactics and claimed they took "appropriate reaction" in what was a "dynamic situation".
The marchers got as far as the Redfield pub on the edge of Lawrence Weston before they were turned back by police.
There were reports locally on Saturday that racist or inflammatory comments were being chanted, and some bystanders were blaming the far-right group the English Defence League for ratcheting up tension.
Steve Gallacher, pictured right, was among the walkers. He said: "The police have made this into an EDL march – but it was a Help for Heroes walk. We walked in from Kingswood and had buckets out and everyone was buying T-shirts. We got as far as the Redfield and police said we couldn't go any further."
The 50-year-old said the walk had been arranged in support of the Armed Forces charity following the death of Gunner Rigby on Wednesday.
He said it was meant to be a friendly occasion to support British soldiers, including some who had attended wearing their medals and had nothing to do with racism.
Mr Gallacher, who lives in St George, added that his seven-year-old son Danny had joined him and had been upset by what happened.
"It wasn't a march, it was a collection," he said. "We had walked from Kingswood and then the police turned around and said 'EDL' and we said 'no', it was not an EDL march it's a collection for Help for Heroes. I think this reaction is disgusting, it is nothing to do with racism it is about supporting soldiers
"Obviously there were a few idiots calling out, but this was nothing to do with the EDL whatsoever, it was about us coming out and collecting for Help for Heroes. I am disturbed by what has happened. I think it is just vile."
Another man was heard remonstrating with police after the crowd had been dispersed stating "I am not a racist".
Officers quickly became aware of the walk and joined those taking part from the start. Reinforcements were drafted in from South Wales Police and Devon and Cornwall to help deal with the situation as the "threat escalated".
Riot police, including some on horseback, blocked off the entrances and exits to the pub to prevent the group moving towards Easton.
Video footage from inside the pub which was posted on the internet showed the crowd shouting and chanting and there were also pictures of a makeshift barricade built from tables and chairs.
Police tried to negotiate with the people inside for several hours before finally moving them out of the pub shortly before 11pm.
There was jostling and pushing from the group as they moved outside along with chants of "England, England, England".
Lines of riot police, vans, horses and officers with dogs corralled the group as it was moved on towards Kingswood.
For around an hour there was a stand-off as the crowd was held near St George's Park. Residents were told they could not get through the stretch of Church Road but shortly before 12.15am the crowd dispersed and the riot vans started to leave the area.
Police said no one was seriously injured and there was no substantial damage in what they labelled a "dynamic situation".
Superintendent Mike Prior said: "We initially adopted a neighbourhood policing style at the march and were with those taking part from the start of the event.
"As the threat escalated we had to increase our numbers to provide a visible police presence and give some reassurance to the local community.
"Our officers are well trained and we will put in an appropriate response based on the situation we face. Despite a dynamic situation involving some drunk and violent individuals we gave people in the area every opportunity to leave before we started to disperse the crowd.
"Throughout the evening our main priority was the wider community of Bristol as we wanted to ensure people could continue to enjoy their evening safely and without disruption."
He added: "People were out collecting for the Help for Heroes campaign but these people who stayed on at the end of it weren't really connected with that.
"They were just drunk and trouble makers and seeking a bit of confrontation with the police and anyone else who was available, that's why the police stepped in to contain the situation."

The two former leaders of the English Defence League will not have to answer a charge of obstructing police after prosecutors deemed there was “insufficient evidence” to bring the case against them.
Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, and his second cousin Kevin Carroll were accused of attempting to defy a ban on marching to the spot where soldier Lee Rigby was murdered via one of the largest mosques in the UK.
When Yaxley-Lennon arrived at Westminster Magistrates' Court to stand trail this morning, he was told the case had been discontinued.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said there was "insufficient evidence" to bring the case.
The pair each denied a charge of obstructing police outside Aldgate East Tube station in east London on 29 June.
Yaxley-Lennon and Carroll were attempting to stage what they claimed was a charity walk to Woolwich Barracks in south east London via the East London Mosque, with a plan to lay flowers in memory of Fusilier Rigby in Woolwich on Armed Forces Day.
Police said they offered two alternative routes that would avoid Tower Hamlets, home to the East London Mosque, and warned against anyone trying to march to Woolwich, stating they would face arrest if they did so.
A CPS spokeswoman said: "Both defendants were charged by police with obstructing a police officer in the execution of her duty, contrary to s89(2) Police Act 1996. The file was then passed to CPS London to prepare the prosecution case.
"When this case was reviewed, the lawyer concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the actions of the suspects amounted to the offence of obstructing a police officer in the execution of her duty, contrary to s89(2) Police Act 1996. We therefore discontinued the case."
The pair, who established the EDL in 2009, announced they were quitting the group earlier this month.
Yaxley-Lennon will appear at the same court later today to answer two further public order charges relating to an EDL demonstration in East London on 7 September.
He is accused as a public assembly organiser of failing to comply with the condition of limiting speeches at the rally to 30 minutes.
He is also alleged to have incited others to breach the condition.
He has indicated that he will plead not guilty to the charges.
