http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-22665443

'A backlash of anger following the killing of Drummer Lee Rigby has led to several people facing charges over comments posted on social media sites.

Incidents have been reported to police across England with arrests in Lincoln, Bristol, Woking, Hastings and Southsea.

Some have been accused of offences under the Communications Act, and others have been arrested on suspicion of inciting racial or religious hatred.

The forces involved have reminded people such comments are unacceptable...'

Enquiry into MI5 failures to remain secret

Did MI5 blunder over Woolwich 'killers'? We will never know
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/did-mi5-blunder-over-woo lwich-killers-we-will-never-know-8631565.html

Intelligence and Security Committee will not present findings to the public
Nigel Morris , Kim Sengupta Friday 24 May 2013

The full story of whether MI5 blundered by failing to act on suspicions about the suspected Woolwich killers – which is to be investigated by MPs and peers – will never be shared with the public.

The Intelligence and Security Committee, which is made up of MPs and peers, will investigate security files held on the killers, and also examine the “nightmare worry” that “lone wolves” slipped through the net to carry out Wednesday’s atrocity, which raises concerns that others could follow suit.

Whitehall sources have confirmed that the two suspects in custody had been known to the security services, but neither was assessed to present an immediate danger.

The committee will present its findings to David Cameron, but its conclusions will never be known in full as the versions of its reports submitted to Parliament are heavily redacted.

Its chairman, Sir Malcolm Rifkind, has already been briefed on the attack by MI5’s new Director-General, Andrew Parker. The panel is expected to hold its first private sessions soon after Parliament returns on 3 June with a view to submitting its report to the Prime Minister in the autumn.

The committee consists of seven senior MPs and peers who are given high-level security clearance. It has wide-ranging powers to call witnesses from all levels of the security services, although senior officials such as the deputy Director-General, who has responsibility for operations against domestic terrorism, are more likely to be summoned. They can either give evidence in person or in writing.

A committee source told The Independent that the Prime Minister wanted it to “dig deeply” to find whether there were intelligence failings or the attacks could have been foreseen.

Members will examine to what extent the alleged murderers were “on the radar” and whether there was any “culpability” on the part of the security service, the source said.

But they stressed: “There are thousands of people who are on the radar as would-be suspects. Only with a very small fraction of those are you able to provide that level of surveillance so that you know what each and every one of their movements is.”

The men shot and arrested by the police for the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby were seen in the company of Islamists under surveillance over possible terrorist planning. But they were not themselves suspected of plotting acts of violence, according to security sources.

Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale were, it is claimed, on the fringes of militancy and no information either from informants or electronic intercepts had pointed towards them carrying out such a killing.

Officials insist that there had been no “chatter” that they were planning to target and behead a soldier. This, it is said, indicated the decision to do so was taken at a very late stage and then very few people may have been aware of what was about to happen.

One of the two, it is believed Adebolajo, was on his way to Somalia last year where he was allegedly trying to join the Islamist militia al-Shabaab. He was stopped at a London airport before boarding a flight to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, and he turned back.

There was no evidence that he was in liaison with members inside Somalia and there are legal difficulties in prosecuting someone who is merely travelling to another country.

Dozens of young British Muslims go abroad every year for jihad, security officials point out, with up to 100 joining the rebels in Syria – the side the British Government supports in the civil war – and little can be done to stop them.

Omar Bakri Mohammed, the radical Islamist cleric Adebolajo was exposed to who claimed to have converted him, is banned from the UK over extremist activities including alleged links to al-Qa’ida. At the same time he is active in recruiting fighters in the Lebanon, where he now lives, for the Syrian opposition – some of whom will end up with equipment being supplied by the UK Government.

MI5 and the police hold that these considerations as well as the need to prioritise limited resources mean that not everyone engaged in radical Islamist acts can be kept under surveillance.

However, if it transpires that the importance of the two killers was underestimated, and that vital clues have been missed, there would be severe repercussions for the Security Service and Scotland Yard

Anyone got them in their cache?
I mean- they may well have further testimony about personal stuff to do with these killer suspects that would incriminate MI5

Pair arrested on suspicion of murder - officers are waiting to speak to them
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2330771/Woolwich-murder-suspec t-offered-job-MI5-months-ago-claims-childhood-friend.html
MI5 is already facing criticism after it emerged Adebolajo and fellow suspect Michael Adebowale had been monitored by the security service for eight years.
It is facing an inquiry by MPs amid a raft of devastating revelations about the alleged killers’ known links to Islamist extremism.
Mr Nusaybah, speaking on the BBC's Newsnight programme last night about Abebolajo's MI5 claims, said : 'His wording was, "They are bugging me - they won't leave me alone."

Hypnotism? Trauma in Kenya? Mind control? - ed.
Adebowale was said to have left the Greenwich area for a year and returned about eight months ago, wearing traditional Islamic garb and a white skull cap, typically worn by Muslim men who have been on the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: ‘Michael would always say hello and play with my children, but in the last year he stopped. He would just ignore us when we saw him at the lift.
But more recently, he would just put his head down when he saw me. Even if I tried to talk to him he was very dismissive. I thought it was weird....
In recent months Adebowale had begun seeing a woman who had converted to Islam two years ago and wore a headscarf to cover her hair.
Armed police raided her flat, also in Greenwich, and led away two women and a 15-year-old boy, who witnesses said was handcuffed.
Two toddlers and a baby were also said to have been taken from the property....
A friend who has known Adebowale since he was 11 spoke of his shock at seeing the video of the Woolwich atrocity.
The man, who asked to remain anonymous, told ITV’s Daybreak: ‘That wasn’t the same person.
‘He wasn’t someone monstrous, that was not the same person.

Interesting interview with Ingrid:

Loyau-Kennett says she is "naturally rightwing". She adds: "I don't agree with the socialist thing where they praise everything rather than praising hard work. I'm proud that we are now represented by David Cameron rather than Gordon Brown. I voted for him."

"If it were possible, then, yes, they should die a painful death," she says. "But we can't do that, unfortunately.

Nice picture of a noose in today's Mail
Why are Tories always baying for blood?

Why Drummer Rigby's killers should be charged with treason
By Simon Heffer = PUBLISHED: 23:19, 24 May 2013
We think of treason as a medieval crime associated with gruesome punishments such as hanging
Although we think of treason as a medieval crime — associated with gruesome punishments such as hanging, drawing and quartering or boiling in oil — the last trial for such an offence happened less than 70 years ago.
William Joyce, whose nightly ‘Germany calling’ broadcasts as Lord Haw Haw were designed to undermine national morale during World War II, was tried and executed for it in 1946.
The law of treason — formulated in 1351 — remains on the statute book specifically to protect the integrity of the state.
Its continued existence assumes that citizens have a legal duty to preserve the state that confers citizenship upon them, in return for the protection and support the state gives them.
One crime that constitutes treason is ‘levying war against the sovereign in the realm’. Another is ‘adhering to the sovereign’s enemies, giving them aid and comfort, in the realm or elsewhere’.

Not hearing a lot about those responsible for MI5 and MI6 the Joint Intelligence Committee made up of unelected civil servants are we?
JIC is 'overseen' by ISC which is made up of pro-establishment MPs...
Here's one extremely good reason why Slur Malcolm Rifkind is unfit to chair the Intelligence and Security Committee. He's not impartial

Woolwich attack: MI5 'not in the dock' says former defence secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind
Richard Wheeler Tuesday 28 May 2013
MI5 is not in the dock even though MPs are preparing to investigate the service's operations prior to soldier Lee Rigby's murder, a former defence secretary said today.
Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) will also answer whether or not security agencies fell short in the case of the Woolwich murder, its chairman Sir Malcolm Rifkind said.
Sir Malcolm added that the effect of Government spending cuts on the security services will be analysed during the ISC's review and any further reduction in resources would be a cause for concern.
Asked if MI5 was in the dock, Sir Malcolm told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "No, I don't think they're in the dock. I think that would be very unfair.

Interesting developments from our old friend & 7/7 author Nafeez Ahmed tonight

Exclusive - Woolwich suspect tortured "at behest of British intelligence", Parliamentary Intelligence Committee is told:
http://www.nafeezahmed.com/2013/05/exclusive-woolwich-suspect-tortured -at.html

Police's arrest of witness claiming Woolwich attacker was radicalised by torture, sexual abuse and harassment was "ordered by MI5"

A letter to the UK Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee by a childhood friend of one of the Woolwich attackers claims that the suspect was subjected to "systematic torture and sexual abuse" by Kenyan troops on behalf of Britain's security services.

The letter - exclusive excerpts of which are quoted below - is authored by Ibrahim Hassan, otherwise known as "Abu Nusaybah", who was interviewed by Richard Watson on BBC Newsnight claiming that MI5 had been harassing Woolwich suspect Michael "Mujahid" Adebolajo to join the agency as an informant six months ago. Hassan was arrested by Metropolitan Police under the Terrorism Act 2000 immediately after his BBC interview, and is currently in custody at Southwark Police Station.

A copy of this letter was obtained by this author today, photographs of which are posted at the end of this report, which also contains an exclusive interview with Ibrahim Hassan's lawyer with previously unknown details of Adebolajo's alleged ordeal.

Addressed to chairman of the committee Sir Malcolm Rifkind, and prepared with the assistance of his solicitors, Hassan's letter insists on his innocence of involvement in terrorism activities, and his condemnation of Adebolajo's "shocking acts." Arguing that it is in "the public interest that everything that can be done to prevent such atrocities in the future should be the government's top priority", Hassan says that he believes "two fundamental factors" explain this behaviour:

"... the first factor was the systematic torture and sexual abuse he was subjected to by Kenyan troops which he believed was at the behest of British intelligence. Michael was told by his captors that this action by them was at the behest of UK authorities. He could not forget or forgive them for this connivance in this brutal treatment of him, when all he was trying to do was build a new life for himself outside of the UK."

After his return to the UK, Hassan writes that Adebolajo "informed me that he was subject to further harassment and intimidation by the security services in order to pressure him into working for them as an agent." The letter implores the committee "to investigate any connection between the UK and Kenyan authorities in the mistreatment of Michael Adebolajo whilst in their hands. I am witness to the fact that the Michael I knew ceased to exist after his treatment in Kenya."

The letter also claims that counter terrorism police officers did not deny that the arrest was ordered by MI5. It points out that:

"at a hearing video link on the 26th May 2013 with Westminster Magistrates Court where the police sought permission from the court to extend my time in custody, my barrister asked if my arrest was ordered by the intelligence services [and] the police refused to deny this possibility."

Hassan adds that he believes his arrest "was ordered by the intelligence services because I made this information public."

Adebolajo was one of seven men arrested by Kenyan authorities during a trip to the country in November 2010. Kenyan police at the time accused the men of travelling to Somalia to join the al-Qaeda affiliated terrorist group al-Shabaab. His family and friends claimed that he had been detained without charge and tortured before his return to Britain.

The claims have been corroborated by a London-based human rights organisation, Cage Prisoners. Chairman of the group, Moazzem Begg, said the day after Hassan's arrest:

"Is it a coincidence that Abu Nusaybah was arrested yesterday at the BBC studios right after he gave an interview which described the MI5 harassment and torture in Kenya - which British intelligence knew about and quite possibly was complicit in - of Michael Adebolajo?"

Begg confirmed that Adebolajo had "approached us around the time about it and we referred him to lawyers as a result."

Now Begg's confirmation is supported with further details by Ibrahim Hassan's lawyer, Mohammed Akunjee of Soni & Kaur Solicitors in an exclusive interview with this author.

Akunjee said that his client told him that Michael Adebolajo had been tortured in Kenya under the orders of Britain's security services. He added that this key claim put forth by Hassan and recorded during his BBC Newsnight interview was inexplicably not aired on the first programme. Instead, Newsnight waited until the release of Hassan's letter to air the recording today, 28th May.

Akunjee said that, "Abu Nusayba told me that 6 months ago Michael Adebolajo had turned up at his house distraught and explained to him that he was being harassed and hounded by MI5 officers.

And there is a football match tonight between England and Ireland.

Quote:
It's the first time the two nations have met since a meeting at Lansdowne Road in 1995 had to be abandoned after English fans started rioting in the first half with the Irish a goal ahead.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2332209/England-v-Re public-Ireland--live.html

Wonderful timing to get the false nationalistic fervour raging. Just pointing it out as I saw al jazeera discussing the ridiculousness of the inference that the IRA weren't as bad as 'these islamic extremists', at least they gave a warning blah de blah (I was looking for a weather report guv).

I wonder if the IRA have had a mention on many other news programmes today?

A google search (news tab) for me reveals at least 4 separate IRA related stories today.

I think I need a holiday.

Seven years ago, after I had climbed from the wreckage of the number 30 bus, my greatest fear was for the hatred it could provoke, and that fear has not gone away; it is greater than ever. I read the ‘news papers’ today, and that is what I see growing. The journalists feeding this hatred are ‘terrorists’ in their own ways, and so are the people buying and reading those articles.

SAS seized terror suspect three years ago: Michael Adebolajo deemed so significant, Special Forces were sent to grab him in Kenya in 2010

Terror suspect was 'snatched' in 'highly dramatic' helicopter operation

An SAS unit ‘snatched’ Woolwich terror suspect Michael Adebolajo in Kenya as he prepared to enter war-torn Somalia, the Daily Mail can reveal.

Adebolajo was flown back to the UK but then allowed to roam the streets unchecked for the next two and a half years.

The extraordinary revelation that the 28-year-old was deemed so important that Special Forces were ordered to detain him will, in the wake of the killing of Drummer Lee Rigby in Woolwich last week, raise disturbing new questions as to why he was free to roam the streets of London.

Sp first we were told the man was hacked to death in London then it is revealed that a car crash occurred...

Then that one of the terror suspects was to be recruited by MI5 then the SAS were also involved in his removal from Kenya.

A funny sort of 'independent' character for whom the SAS get involved for?

Coming after the Boston bombing Britains security services appear to give a new lease of life to 'extremism' of both 'right' and 'left'. The EDL who went as far as they could with their slogans 'No Surrender to the Taliban' have resurfaced harping on to a past which is no longer there (Britain lost the Empire decades ago and its attempt at recreating a new one died a death as well).

Quite easily diverts attention from the collapsing coalition govt and exposes certain weird situations whereby opponents of the Labour Party are reported to the police for participating in Unite against Fascism (by the actual organisers!) demos in Newcastle and they are arrested and their houses turned over...

http://www.cpgb.org.uk/home/weekly-worker/964/letters

This is about tackling extremism and giving the police carte blanche to ban marches and attack the right to protest under the guise of upsetting local and national interests....

Road accidents have allways been a favourite tool of the security services...

...he was warned about what happens to Muslims who don’t help the Government and was shown documents that confirmed people he knew were being held in prisons throughout the world. Police and security services are under huge pressure to explain what they know about Adebolajo and his alleged accomplice, Michael Adebowale. Despite warnings stretching back ten years, Michael Adebolajo is said to have been considered ‘low risk’ by MI5.

Even though he was photographed by them standing next to hate preacher Anjem Choudary.

why would the SAS bother attempting to rescue him from Kenya if he was such a "baddie"? Doesnt make sense unless he was working for them at the time or had sensitive info. If the guy was going to enter a war torn Somalia then let him enter and get himself killed. Being protected for some reason.

I read that he was arrested by the SAS as he was on the way to Somalian border, but then handed over to the Kenyan authorities, which was when he was tortured & sexually assaulted.
I cannot find the link at present.

Does anyone know what happened to his friend, who gave the story to 'Newsnight'? He was arrested on leaving the BBC after the interview was recorded.

Does anybody know how many bullets the 'assailants' were allegedly shot with? And what sort of bullets and firearm?
Or what the guy in plain clothes picks up as he comes into the scene after the 'assailant' is shot?

Seem to be keeping this story a little bit quiet given the woolwich knife murder.

Quote:
A man has been arrested following a five-hour-long stand-off with police in a Leeds supermarket.

West Yorkshire Police say they were called to the Harehills area at 1.21pm "to reports of a man demonstrating threatening behaviour with knives in the street".

A spokesman said officers attended and pursued the 32-year-old man into a nearby supermarket, where he was contained.

Negotiators were brought in and he was later arrested. It is understood no hostages were involved.

The spokesman said the only injury was to a man who suffered a small cut to his finger after coming into contact with the man before he entered the supermarket.

Harehills Lane, outside the supermarket, was closed for a number of hours during the incident.

EDL rally to be held in Woolwich, with two imported 'Hate Preachers'; sign link below to ask they be prevented entering UK:

EDL leader Stephen Lennon has just announced that Pam Geller and Robert Spencer will be speaking at a EDL rally in Woolwich on Saturday 29th June.

Geller and Spencer, are two of the most influential anti-Muslim agitators in the United States. They recently placed adverts on the New York subway calling Muslims "savages" and are the co-founders of the Stop the Islamisation of America group.

Understandably, their organisation is considered a hate group and that's why we are writing to the Home Secretary asking that she stops them from entering the UK.

Will you co-sign the letter?

Notice how the first thing Paul Joseph Watson highlights is this crazy doctored photo doing the rounds where Michael Adebolajo has supposedly no blood on his hands. This photo will have been put out there by the intelligence apparatus to aid in turning off peoples minds to the facts that this event was planned by the British Security Service and that Lee Rigby was placed at the scene of crime and that he was not even beheaded. The intelligentsia put out fakes and disinformation into some of the alternative media sources on the internet. Most of the alternative media is controlled by British Intelligence and the Deutsche Verteidigungs Dienst in order to try and steer the minds of the awakening few so no one can slip the net of slavery and illusion. Most of the U.S. alternative media is actually run by Knight of Malta, George H.W Bush the front head for the DVD in the Americas. May I remind you that he serves both the Pope and Great Master, Prince Charles who runs The Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath which Bush is a high level member within....

The trial of the two men accused of murdering the soldier Lee Rigby is scheduled to begin on Friday. The start of the trial had been delayed, but on Tuesday the trial judge, Mr Justice Sweeney, gave the media permission to report that the opening of the prosecution case before a jury was imminent.

The judge said he will hear further legal submissions before the crown can outline the evidence which, it says, will demonstrate the guilt of Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale.

Rigby, 25, a drummer and machine-gunner in the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, died on May 22 2013 as he walked back to Woolwich military barracks, south London, in broad daylight. Witnesses reported that he was struck by a car and then stabbed.

Adebolajo, 28, and Adebowale, 22, deny murder.

Last week the two accused appeared in the dock together at the Old Bailey, separated by security guards. They spoke only to confirm their names.

Adebolajo has asked to be addressed as Mujaahid Abu Hamza, and his co-accused has asked to be addressed as Ismail Ibn Abdullah during proceedings.

The two men also stand accused of the attempted murder of a police officer and conspiring to murder a police officer.

Drummer Lee Rigby was hacked to death like he was a “joint of meat”, the Old Bailey was told on Friday.

The 25-year-old was virtually decapitated by two Islamists in broad daylight on May 22, the court heard.

Witnesses described a “horrific and frenzied attack” as he was mown down by a car from behind before being attacked with a meat cleaver and knives.

The court was told how passers-by could not believe what they were seeing as Michael Adebolajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22, dragged Drummer Rigby’s body into the middle of the road in Woolwich, south-east London.

There were gasps in Court Number 2 as CCTV footage was shown for the first time of how a Vauxhall Tigra, allegedly driven by Adebolajo, of Lewisham, south-east London, veered across the road and hit the soldier at 30 to 40mph.

He was knocked on to the bonnet and rolled on the ground. The pair then attacked his motionless, unconscious body. Adebolajo allegedly took hold of his hair and “repeatedly hacked” at his neck. He almost succeeded in decapitating him.

The two Islamists claimed that they were acting in revenge for the actions of David Cameron and his Government against Muslims.

Witnesses said they tried to keep a group of primary schoolchildren away from the “awful scene”. Other “brave” women confronted the attackers or tried to offer “comfort and humanity” to Drummer Rigby.

At the start of the murder trial, the jury was also shown footage of Adebolajo, clutching a cleaver and with blood on his hands. A bystander filmed him as he claimed that it was an “eye for an eye”.

Opening the case, Richard Whittam QC, prosecuting, gave details of witness statements.

Members of Drummer Rigby’s family, including his mother Lyn and wife Rebecca, left the court visibly upset as the footage was shown to the jury.

The soldier, a father of one, was a member of the Corps of Drums with the 2nd Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. He was returning to Woolwich Barracks, when he was attacked.

The defendants had been parked nearby waiting for a victim.

Mr Whittam said they were intent on killing a soldier. Adebolajo had even bought a parking ticket as they waited nearby before driving at speed as Drummer Rigby crossed Artillery Place.

The attack

CCTV footage showed the Tigra veer across the road and drive straight at the soldier, knocking him in to the air.

Mr Whittam said what followed was “shocking to those who observed it”. Amanda Bailey saw Drummer Rigby fly “off the bonnet and land about two feet in front”. The car did not brake and crashed into a road sign.

Mr Whittam said Ms Bailey saw his eyes were open “but they looked frozen”. He said: “He wasn’t moving or making any noise.”

Ms Bailey tried to call 999 but “in her angst” she mistakenly dialled 9999 as she saw the driver get out of the car, holding a cleaver.

“He knelt down by Lee Rigby and took hold of his hair,” Mr Whittam said. “He then repeatedly hacked at the right side of his neck just below the jawline.”

The court heard how Ms Bailey stopped a group of children returning to Mulgrave Primary School after a library trip.

Thomas Seymour, an electrician for Greenwich borough council, claimed that he thought he was trying “to cut the victim’s head off’”.

Another witness Gary Perkins, described the defendant’s actions as being “like a butcher attacking a joint of meat”. He was travelling with a colleague, Gill Hucks, who said it was a “horrific, frenzied attack”.
The aftermath

The jury saw footage of the men dragging Drummer Rigby’s body into the road before parading around, armed with the knives and a gun.

Mr Whittam said: “They wanted members of the public to see the consequence of what can only be described as their barbarous acts.”

This was contrasted to the “bravery and decency” shown by some women who were passing by, including Amanda Donnelly Martin, who was with her daughter Gemini.

She went to the body and stroked Drummer Rigby’s head while Vikki Cave, a trained first aider, confronted Adebolajo after realising that there was nothing she could do to help the victim.

Jurors were shown a video clip of Adebolajo speaking with blood on his hands.

He said: “The only reason we’ve killed this man today is because Muslims are dying daily by British soldiers.

“This British soldier is one — he is an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

“Do you think David Cameron is going to get caught in the street, when we start busting our guns? Do you think your politicians are going to die? No, it’s going to be the average guy, like you and your children.”

The note

Adebolajo also handed Mrs Donnelly Martin a handwritten note addressed to his “beloved children”.

He had written: “Do not spend your days in endless dispute with the cowardly and foolish if it means that it will delay you meeting Allah’s enemies on the battlefield.

“If I live beyond this day and you find me talking other than this, then know that perhaps Allah has left me to stray.

“If you find yourself curious as to why carnage is reaching your [underlined] own towns then know it is simply retaliation for your oppression in our towns.

“When the heat of battle reaches your local street it’s unlikely that any of your so called politicians will be at risk or caught in the cross fire so I suggest you remove them.”

The Arrest

Three armed officers were the first police to arrive, CCTV footage showed. Adebolajo raised his cleaver above his head, while Adebowale, of Greenwich, south-east London, ran at the car.

The officers — two men and a woman — were seen running from their car before each defendant was shot. Mr Whittam said the female police officer – referred to as D49 – braked “harshly” as she approached the scene. The officer — known as E48 — fired out of the window and hit Adebolajo, the court heard.

As the vehicle stopped, the other officer, referred to as E42, left the car and saw Adebowale pointing a gun. He shot him.

'No justification’

Mr Whittam told the jury that to “seek out and to kill political opponents on the grounds that you say that they have oppressed your countrymen or people of your religion is still murder”.

He said: “Killing to make a political point, or to frighten the public to put pressure on the Government, or as an expression of anger, is murder.

“Equally there is no defence of moral justification for killing just as there is no defence of religious justification. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth suggests revenge or retaliation, and in the context of this case, murder.”

He said earlier: “They had committed, you may think, a cowardly and callous murder by deliberately attacking an unarmed man in plain clothes and then they murdered him.”

Adebolajo, who clutched a copy of the Koran while in the dock, and Adebowale deny murdering Mr Rigby, attempting to murder and conspiracy to murder a police officer. The case continues.

Court hears countdown to 'horrific, frenzied' Woolwich attack

QC tells Old Bailey weapons used to kill Lee Rigby on his return to Woolwich barracks cost just £54.97

Josh Halliday, Matthew Taylor and Vikram Dodd
The Guardian, Friday 29 November 2013 20.21 GMT

Link to video: Lee Rigby murder trial begins

The weapons that were used to kill Lee Rigby cost £54.97, the Old Bailey jury at hearing the Woolwich murder trial heard.

Opening the prosecution case, Richard Whittam QC said that one of the men accused of murdering of the soldier, Michael Adebolajo, was captured on CCTV on 21 May, the day before the attack, visiting a branch of Argos in Lewisham, south London.

He drove there in a Vauxhall Tigra, the same car the crown said was used the next day as a weapon to run over the soldier in a suburban street.

The jury was shown pictures of receipts recovered by police from the car after the attack: a knife sharpener was bought for £9.99 from the Argos store and £44.98 was paid in cash for a set of five Taylors Eye Witness knives in a block.

Just after 8am on the day of the attack, Adebolajo was seen driving the car in the area around his home before filling up with petrol at a local shop. He told the assistant he did not have any money or identification and, according to Whittam, offered his phone as security. He told the shop assistant not to answer if it rang.

Adebolajo went home and returned. He paid for the petrol then headed towards the address of his co-accused, Michael Adebowale, at around 9.30am. The court heard that the two men were together for the rest of the morning before setting off for Woolwich.

The court was shown video footage and images of the pair driving around the area for at least an hour before the attack. Rigby was returning to his barracks in Woolwich after spending the morning at a recruitment fair at the Tower of London. The soldier's mother, Lyn Rigby, left the court in tears when jurors heard they were about to see her son's final moments.

Dressed in a blue Help for Heroes hooded top with a camouflage backpack slung over his shoulder, Rigby was shown passing a pub and council offices as he walked the short distance from Woolwich Arsenal Docklands Light Railway station. Instead of turning into his barracks, he crossed the road.

Without warning, the jury heard, Adebolajo drove the Tigra straight at Rigby. There were gasps as CCTV footage showed the car ploughing into Rigby from behind, lifting the 25-year-old onto the bonnet and windscreen before it crashed at up to 40mph. His unconscious body landed two feet in front of the car, the court heard.

"What unfolded after that was shocking to those who observed it," Whittam told jurors.

After a short delay Adebolajo and Adebowale got out of the car and set about an "horrific, frenzied attack," the jury was told.

Amanda Bailey saw Rigby's prone body and attempted to telephone emergency services but dialled 9999 in her panic, the court heard. Describing Bailey's witness testimony, Whittam told jurors: "The driver was carrying a cleaver in his right hand. He knelt down by Lee Rigby and took hold of his hair.

"He then repeatedly hacked at the right side of his neck just below the jaw line. He was using considerable force, bringing his hand into the air each time before he struck."

Bailey saw Adebolajo hack nine times into Rigby's neck, the jury heard. Another witness, Gary Perkins, saw Adebolajo "sawing at the neck of Lee Rigby with a machete" while Adebowale was "trying to cut bits of the body away". He said the attack was like "a butcher attacking a joint of meat".

Another witness told police he "instantly believed that he [the attacker] was trying to cut the victim's head off by the way he was attacking him", jurors were told. Saraj Miah, who was standing outside a nearby shop, saw the two men attacking Rigby and shouted: "Don't kill him," before Adebowale took out a rusted handgun and aimed it at him.

As the two defendants dragged Rigby's bloodied body into the street several women engaged the pair – still armed with knives, a gun and covered in blood – in conversation.

Horrified onlookers watched as Amanda Donnelly Martin was shown going to Rigby's lifeless body sitting down next to it in the road and rubbing his back and trying to offer some comfort. Others were seen talking to the two alleged attackers as they gesticulated and argued.

Vikki Cave, a first aider, approached the body to see if she could help, Whittam said. She heard the taller of the alleged killers talking about "religion", the jury was told. Whittam said he was "saying things about religion such as 'these soldiers go to our land, kill/bomb our people – so an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth"'.

Cave asked if Adebolajo was going to attack them. Whittam said he replied: "No, you need to keep back when the police and soldiers get here."

Link to video: CCTV footage shows the moments before Lee Rigby was run over by a car in Woolwich

Adebolajo, still carrying a knife, passed a handwritten note to Donnelly Martin as she was sitting by Rigby's side, the court heard. Whittam told jurors the letter read: "Many of your people are aristocrats that directly benefit from invasion of our lands without material loss.

"Whereas the average Joe Bloggs working class man loses his sons when they're killed by our brothers, when the heat of battle reaches your local street it's unlikely that any of your so-called politicians will be at risk or caught in crossfire so I suggest you remove them.

"Remove them and replace them with people who will secure your safety by immediate withdrawal from the affairs of Muslims."

One onlooker filmed as Adebolajo addressed the camera, jurors were told, saying: "You people will never be safe. Remove your governments, they don't care about you. You think David Cameron is gonna get caught in the street when we start busting our guns?"

The jury was then shown footage of the moment the first armed police arrived. Three officers in the police BMW had been warned of the seriousness of the situation as they raced across south London but as the car turned into the street they could not have been prepared for the scene.

As the car turned into Artillery Place with its sirens blaring the driver – a female officer – was alerted by a shout from a colleague in the back of the car to Rigby's stricken body lying in the road.

The court heard that within a split second she saw a man running towards the car with a meat cleaver. She went to draw her pistol but could not get it out of her holster. Whittam said: "She immediately thought "he is going to kill me."

But her colleague in the back of the car opened fire. Adebolajo, who was just a few feet from the car, was hit and flung to the ground.

Within seconds Adebowale, who had a gun in his hand and was also charging towards the police, had also been shot. As he fell to the ground he lifted the gun towards the officers who shot him again. Onlookers scattered as the three officers tried to secure the area.

Whittam told the jury that in police interviews Adebolajo said his name was Mjahid Abu Hamza and added: "Your people have gone to Afghanistan and raped and killed our women. I am seeking retribution. I wouldn't stoop so low as to rape and kill women."

He is alleged to have said: "I thank the person who shot me because it is what Allah would have wanted," adding "I love Allah more than my children."

Adebolajo refused to sign the notes of this conversation, Whittam said, claiming his words had been taken out of context. The next day, 23 May, Adebolajo made more comments to police, the jury heard. He is alleged to have said: "My intention was never to harm civilians. There were women and children around. My intention was to hurt military only."

Referring to Rigby, the crown alleged Adebolajo said: "He was in his kit, in his uniform coming in and out of the barracks." Whittam, addressing the jury who had seen CCTV of Rigby's last journey, dressed in a Help for Heroes sweatshirt, told the court: "He was not of course in his kit, and he was not coming in and out of the barracks."

The court was told Adebolajo then made a further statement: "We hope that one day Great Britain will replace those corrupt politicians with men or women, who truly care about the security of their citizens by withdrawing from affairs of Muslims, including their lands."
The accused

Michael Adebolajo

Born in Lewisham, south London, in 1984. Since his arrest Adebolajo, who was living in Romford, Essex, has let it be known he wants to be called Mujaahid Abu Hamza. After being detained by police, Adebolajo refused to provide his home address unless officers would give him an assurance that they would use restraint when attending his property. This was because "someone lived there whom he described as very timid", the court heard. In comments recorded by police officers and read to the jury, Adebolajo described himself as a Muslim extremist and said: "I love Allah more than my children."

Michael Adebowale

Born in Eltham, south London, in 1991, Adebowale lived in Greenwich. He was brought up in the Christian faith but converted to Islam when he was 17. His parents called him by his middle name Tobi but after his conversion to Islam he adopted the name Ismael. On the weekend before the incident, Adebowale was twice due to meet his father, but on both occasions he failed to show up. After the second missed meeting, Adebowale apologised to his father for getting up late. "The next time his father was to see him was when he watched the news on 22 May," prosecutors told the court.

Drummer Lee Rigby was murdered in a “cowardly and callous” act by two men who then tried to decapitate his motionless body, the Old Bailey heard today.

Michael Adebolajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22, carried out a “barbarous act” on the unarmed man by running over in a car from behind and then mutilating his body, a jury was told.

Richard Whittam QC, prosecuting, said the pair had used their car as a “weapon” to run over the 25-year-old Fusilier as he crossed the road in Woolwich, east London, on May 22 this year.

Armed with a meat cleaver and knives, they then repeatedly stabbed and cut at Mr Rigby’s body before dragging him in to the middle of the road so members of the public could see what they had done, Mr Whittam said.

Adebolajo, from Romford in Essex, and Adebowale, from Greenwich, deny murdering Fusilier Rigby and each deny attempting to murder a police officer on the same day, and conspiracy to murder a police officer on or before that day.

At the start of their trial today, the pair were flanked by eight security officers as they sat in the dock of the Old Bailey’s historic Number 2 court.

Family members and loved ones of soldier Lee Rigby, Ian Rigby, his stepfather (L), his sister Sara McClure (C) and his mother Lyn Rigby (2-R) arrive at the Old Bailey in London

Opening the case, Mr Whittam told the court Mr Rigby suffered a “shocking” death.

He said the accused “committed a cowardly and callous murder by deliberately attacking an unarmed man in civilian clothes from behind using a vehicle as a weapon and then they murdered him and mutilated his body with a meat cleaver and knives”.

The men were in a Vauxhall Tigra in Artillery Place shortly after 2pm when it was driven at Mr Rigby at between 30 too 40 miles an hour.

The collision knocked him unconscious and the car, which did not brake, crashed in to a road sign “at great force”.

The two men then got out of the car armed with a meat cleaver, knives and a revolver.

Mr Whittam said: “They both attacked the motionless body of Lee Rigby.

“He was repeatedly stabbed and Michael Adebolajo made a serious and almost successful attempt to decapitate him with multiple blows to his neck made with the meat cleaver.

“At the same time as Michael Adebolajo used the meat cleaver, Michael Adebowale was using a knife to stab and cut at Lee Rigby’s body.”

The body was then dragged in to the road, Mr Whittam said.

“They wanted the members of the public present to see the consequences of their barbarous act.”

He added: Such heinous behaviour is in distinct contrast to the bravery and decency shown by some of the members of the public present.”

Mr Whittam said “despite the abhorrence of the scene” one woman went to Mr Rigby’s lifeless body and stroked him to “provide some comfort and humanity to what had unfolded”.

Others tried to offer first aid while another woman engaged Adebolajo in conversation.

The court heard the incident happened close to a primary school and children returning from a school visit to a library were turned back by members of the public so they could not see the “awful scene”.

Recap: Lee Rigby trial updates as Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale accused of Woolwich soldier murder
2 Dec 2013 15:52

3:52 pm

Witness James Henegan told the court he saw both men attacking Lee Rigby with knives.

One of the men then got a carrier bag from the car and pulled out a gun.

"I thought he was going to fire the gun at us," said Mr Henegan. "I just didn't know what to do."

He described it as "the most traumatic thing I have ever witnessed'"

Mr Henegan choked back tears as defence barrister David Gottlieb told him: "My client is anxious for you to know that even if you had arrived earlier there was absolutely nothing you could have done to stop it."

The jury was then sent home until tomorrow.

3:39 pm

Cheralee Armstrong, who was on her way to work at the time of the attack, said in a statement: "I thought they were resuscitating the person on the floor following a car crash.

"I then saw the man's arm. He kept ramming two knives into the person with some force.

"It was like they were mutilating the person's body. It seemed like they were trying to remove the person's organs from his body.

"There was blood everywhere underneath the body. I shouted “they are stabbing him, they are killing him."

She shouted at the men to stop and described one of the attackers as having a blank stare, "pure evil and his eyes were bulging'"

The attacker then got a gun from his bag and pointed it at her.

"The man didn't say anything but continued to stare at us. I shouted 'He's got a gun.' I thought i was going to die."

Miss Armstrong then saw the men drag the body along the pavement and throw it into the road ‘like a piece of rubbish'.

3:29 pm

The first live witness, Gary Perkins, said he saw one of the men trying to cut off Lee Rigby's head "like a butcher hacking at a piece of meat"

The other attacker made 'frenzied stabbing motions' at the soldier's body.

He added that his colleague Gill Hucks "was in an extreme state of distress."

3:17 pm

Gill Hucks said in a statement: "I could not believe they were doing what they were doing in the middle of the afternoon in the middle of the street.

"He was cutting into his neck from ear to ear. Male one then dragged him in front of my car. He then flung the body on to the road.

"In my rear view mirror I saw a man approaching the attackers. The males threatened him and he left.

"I had almost totally lost control and was screaming. I was shaking and very upset. Quite a crowd gathered and people filmed on their mobile phones.

"The men made no attempt to run from the scene."

3:06 pm

The widow of soldier Lee Rigby left court in tears today as jurors heard the eyewitness accounts of how he was run over and attacked with a meat cleaver and knives.

Prosecutor Richard Whittam QC has been reading statements made by members of the public who saw the Fusilier's alleged murder near Woolwich barracks.

Fusilier Rigby's widow Rebecca left the oak-panelled courtroom in tears as the statements were read,

2:57 pm

Jurors were read a statement from Amanda Bailey, who stopped her car alongside the scene of the crash in Artillery Place.

"It seemed a long time passed before the driver got out of the car. I then saw the driver reach into his sweatshirt jacket.

"I thought he was reaching for a phone to call an ambulance but i was shocked when he pulled out a knife with a rectangular blade.

"It was a cleaver about three inches wide. He was holding the cleaver in his right hand.

"He grabbed the young man with his hand and started hacking at his neck with the knife.

'It opened up a large cut and I could see a spray of blood. He was still hacking. He was using a lot of force to hack at the young man's neck.

"He was raising it up and bringing it down repeatedly.

"I couldn't take my eyes off what the driver was doing to the young man. It was just crazy.

"I was so shocked all i could do was sit there and stare at what was happening. He was determined and wasn't going to stop.

"This man didn't care who was there and who wasn't there.

"The whole incident had taken about two minutes. It felt like a lifetime."

She then drove away and warned a group of schoolchildren not to approach the scene.

2:48 pm

Jury hears a statement from a taxi driver who was following the car which hit Lee Rigby.

"When it crossed the central reservation it accelerated and veered diagonally across to the right, mounted the kerb and drove on the pavement.

"I saw a man being flipped into the air as he was hit.

"'Four or five seconds later the passenger got out of the passenger seat. I saw him making a thrusting motion in and out towards the man's body.

"He stood by his head. His right hand was chopping at the man's head with a small chopper or axe.

"The action was like chopping a tree. It was like when somebody slaps a person repeatedly backwards and forwards."

2:37 pm

Shop customer Saraj Miah said in a statement that the car hit Lee Rigby with 'extreme force.'

He added: "Immediately two black men, one with a chopper knife in his hand, came out of the car.

"The black man with the chopper knife went towards the head of the fallen man.

"I thought the two men with knives in the hand were going to kill him.

I told them: “Do not kill him.” They did not listen.

‘The black man in passenger seat stabbed the fallen man about six times in his chest.

"I told them 'do not leave'. The black man from the passenger seat took out a gun and aimed it at me.”

2:36 pm

Prosecutor Richard Whittam then read the statement of eyewitness Ibrahim Elidemir, a shopkeeper who was standing on the pavement at the time of the impact.

Mr Elidemir said: "I saw a body lying against the wall, which looked like a dead body. It wasn’t moving.

"I saw a black guy standing over him with a knife in his left hand. Its overall length was about 30cm.

"I was scared. I was confused by what I was seeing and wondered what the man was going to do.

"I heard someone saying 'call the police, get the police.'

"I was very frightened and returned to my shop and operated the electric shutter. I used the shop telephone to call 999.

"I told the lady there had been a car crash and there was somebody stabbing somebody."

He later heard the gunshot while still in his shop.

"The incident has affected me very badly and made me feel very sad," he added.

2:17 pm

CCTV footage of Fusilier Lee Rigby being hit by a car are shown to the jury in court.

The 25-year-old soldier had arrived at Woolwich Arsenal DLR station at 2.10opm and walked into Wellington Street on his way to Artillery Place.

He was knocked down as he crossed the road towards a shop.

1:01 pm

The Lee Rigby trial breaks for lunch.

12:57 pm

The jury are shown images of the two defendants travelling by car from Adebolago’s home in Greenwich towards Woolwich at around 1pm.

They drive past the scene of the murder just after 1.30pm, continuing along the barracks and towards the Woolwich Ferry.

Further CCTV shows the car making its way back along the same route towards the scene ten minutes later.

12:41 pm

The jury are shown a picture of Adebolajo buying a five-piece knife set and block from Argos the day before the attack.

Further images track the movement of both defendants in the Vauxhall Tigra on the morning of 22 May this year.

Adebolajo is shown buying petrol at around 8.30am and handing his mobile phone to the cashier because he does not have any money.

There is a Koran in his pocket. He returned twenty minutes later to pay the bill with cash.

12:26 pm

The Lee Rigby murder trial is now underway again after the weekend break.

Prosecutor Richard Whittam QC told the jury: "The first part of the evidence will be some agreed facts."

The judge Mr Justice Sweeney explained that this is evidence accepted by both prosecution and defence.

11:45 am

On Friday, prosecutor Richard Whittam QC delivered his opening speech to the jury.

He said the 25-year-old was victim to "a cowardly and callous murder" when Adebolajo and Adebowale ran him over, dragged him into the middle of the road and attacked him with a meat cleaver and knife.

He told the court: "They wanted members of the public to see the consequence of what can only be described as their barbarous acts.

"They had committed, you may think, a cowardly and callous murder by deliberately attacking an unarmed man in plain clothes from behind, using a vehicle as a weapon, and then they murdered him and mutilated his body with that meat cleaver and knives."

Adebolajo tried to decapitate the soldier while Adebowale stabbed and cut him, the jury heard.

Video footage of soldier Lee Rigby being mown down by a car was played in court and later released to the media.

It showed a Vauxhall Tigra, that prosecutors claim was being driven by Adebolajo, swerve across the road and mow down the fusilier.

The jury was told that the car was driven "straight at" Fusilier Rigby at a speed of 30-40mph.

Other footage showing the two men dragging his body into the road has not been released.

11:40 am

The trial of two men accused of murdering soldier Lee Rigby continues at the Old Bailey, London today.

Michael Adebolajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22, are charged with killing the Fusilier as he walked back to Woolwich Barracks in south-east London on May 22.

They are also each accused of attempting to murder a police officer on the same day, and conspiracy to murder a police officer on or before that day.

Father-of-one Fusilier Rigby, 25, from Middleton, Greater Manchester, died of multiple cut and stab wounds when he was attacked as he returned to the barracks after spending the day at the Tower of London.

Adebolajo, from Romford in Essex, has asked to be known as Mujaahid Abu Hamza in court, while Adebowale, from Greenwich, south-east London, has asked to be called Ismail Ibn Abdullah.

The trial is due to restart at noon today.
