Speaking after his arrest, university lecturer Sergey Lapshyn said: “He wasn’t a very social person – to put it mildly.
“You had to try really hard to strike up a conversation with him.”
“There were also reports of an explosion in a flat he was living in three or four years ago.
“It damaged the doors and windows, but he was given an administrative felony (a police caution) because he told police it was a science experiment.
Lapshyn jumped at the chance to come to Britain, entering a competition hosted by Small Heath-based engineering firm Delcam in partnership with Ukrainian universities.
He won third prize for his work on 3D modelling and computer programming and won a sponsored placement in Birmingham.
