Anti-terror peer dumps his 'boring' wife for a glamorous barrister

Government anti-terror adviser Lord Carlile of Berriew has left his wife of 37 years for a talented barrister 15 years his junior.
The Liberal Democrat peer, who is in charge of reviewing anti-terror laws, had a five-month affair with married Alison Levitt before confessing his adultery to loyal wife Frances.
Lord Carlile, 58, told his shocked wife that he was 'bored' with her and revealed that he had had another affair years earlier when their three daughters were very young.
Lord Carlile, an eminent QC, has now moved Ms Levitt into the flat near his London chambers that he once shared with his wife. Lady Carlile's name has been removed from the door and Ms Levitt's put in its place.
Lady Carlile, 56, told how she had suspected her husband of cheating on her after meeting 43-year-old Ms Levitt at a social function.
Speaking at her home in Welshpool, North Wales, Lady Carlile said: "The affair started while we were still together. He left me last February and said then that it had been going on for five months.
"I was devastated and saddened. I was shaking from limb to limb. I had an inkling that there might have been something going on because I had met her [Alison] and I had told Alex that I was jealous.
"But at the time he said jealousy was an ugly emotion that eats you up. That was probably his way of dealing with his guilt.
"He said he'd done it because he was bored with me. And he admitted he'd had another affair when the children were very young.
"He said it had lasted for several years but that it had meant nothing. He couldn't understand why I was so upset and why I felt it made a mockery of the trust between us."
Lord Carlile, who plays a key role in formulating Government policy, met Ms Levitt when the pair worked on criminal cases together several years ago. Her chambers are just a few hundred yards from his exclusive third-floor flat.
As a QC he successfully defended butler Paul Burrell when he was accused of stealing millions of pounds of goods from the estate of the late Princess Diana.
Ms Levitt is considered a rising star in the legal world, specialising in criminal cases such as serious fraud, murder and rape. As Secretary of the Bar Council she holds an eminent position in legal circles and has an impressive record in the Court of Appeal. She became a barrister at the age of 23.
A friend of the peer said: "They have worked together on a number of cases. He considers her a role model for women at the Bar and told me she's an example of how you can be highly intelligent, very successful and very attractive all at the same time."
Ms Levitt, who uses her maiden name to practise, has been married for 14 years to composer Matthew Miller, 46, but left the marital home last February after telling her husband about the affair.
The couple, who are now getting divorced, have two young children. Mr Miller declined to comment at the £1million elegant Georgian family home he once shared with Ms Levitt in North London.
But a neighbour said: "It's all very sad. Matthew is a rather nice chap and quietly spoken. I think the divorce is as amicable as it can be, and they're sharing the childcare."
Yesterday Lady Carlile described how she and her husband had been childhood sweethearts. "I met Alex when I was 16 and I still find it hard to believe that this has happened," she said.
"But if you're married to an MP, it's a pretty terrible life. You require a sense of trust and confidence. I have no regrets but wouldn't go back to him now. You have to pick yourself up and get on with it.
"The Inns of Court are very discreet, and this sort of thing goes on a lot."
As the MP for Montgomeryshire, Alex Carlile became the first Westminster politician to campaign for the rights of transexuals. He resigned his seat 11 years ago citing 'family reasons'.
The couple have sold their £600,000 cottage in Berriew, North Wales. Lady Carlile, a sculptress, still lives in her husband's former constituency.
Lord Carlile said: "I never make comments on the record about my own or anyone else's private life and that is something I have followed throughout my political life."
