Beloved BBC children’s programme Blue Peter is on a not-very-secret mission from MI5 to find the next generation of spies.

Project Petra will put young viewers through their paces in a rigorous selection procedure with mental and physical challenges to rival James Bond.

Three children aged between eight and 14 will be taken for a tour of MI5's HQ in London, Thames House, and their visit will be filmed by the CBBC show - the first time TV cameras have been allowed in to the top secret building.

Kids can apply through the Blue Peter website and eight will be chosen to attend a "spy school" weekend where they will be tested on crucial spying skills.

The best potential MI5 agents will be taken to the imposing London head office of the British domestic intelligence agency, the exterior of which has featured in several Bond films including The World Is Not Enough and Skyfall.

Anthony Horowitz Anthony Horowitz Bestselling author Anthony Horowitz, who has written the Alex Rider series of books about a teenage agent, is on the selection panel to find CBBC Intelligence Officers.

Horowitz - also the writer of ITV's soon-to-end series Foyle's War about the secret service - said "Children are fascinated by the world of spies and secret intelligence and so, for that matter, am I. I'm really thrilled to have been invited to join this top secret panel, it's going to be a real adventure."

The contest, named after one of the show's early pets, will be launched on tonight's edition of Blue Peter with application forms on the website.

Programme editor Ewan Vinnicombe said: "Project Petra is one of the most exciting opportunities Blue Peter has ever given its audience.

"We're always looking for new ways to help kids understand the world around them and join in with our content and this is a brilliant example of how we can do this on the show, both for the kids taking part and the audience watching on TV and online."

A victim of a VIP paedophile abuse ring has identified a shamed top diplomat and MI6 chief as one of his attackers, reports the Sunday People.

The man, now in his 40s, picked out a photo of Sir Peter Hayman – a former deputy director of the secret service.

Hayman, for many years a pillar of the establishment, caused a scandal when he was caught with paedophile literature.

But until now he has never been accused of actual abuse.

The victim, who we are identifying only as “Nick”, says Hayman was one of a group of men who raped him as a child during a party in London.

Details of his ordeal have been passed to Scotland Yard via the Exaro investigative website.

A former Army intelligence officer has claimed he was told to stop investigating sexual abuse at a boys' home in the 1970s.
Brian Gemmell told the BBC he was ordered to halt his investigation into Kincora Boys' Home by a senior MI5 officer in 1975 after he presented a report on the allegations.
In 1981 three senior care staff at the east Belfast home were jailed for abusing 11 boys and it has been claimed that people of the "highest profile" were connected.
Mr Gemmell claimed he found out about the abuse through two sources, including an agent called Royal Flush, while he was gathering information about loyalists.
"I was summoned to go and see him (the MI5 officer). I went up thinking he was going to be pleased with me," he said.
"He bawled me out. He was rude and offensive and hostile.
"He told me not just to stop any investigation into Kincora, but to drop Royal Flush."
It comes during a public inquiry in Northern Ireland into institutional child abuse between 1922 and 1995, which faced possible suspension last month due to a lack of money as coalition parties were at loggerheads over the latest budget.
Retired judge Sir Anthony Hart, who is leading the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry (HIA), has said the inquiry "does not have sufficient powers" in its present form to investigate issues relating to the Army or MI5. Sir Anthony also said that "there may be benefits to the UK-wide inquiry examining the relevant allegations into Kincora Boys' Home."
Northern Ireland's First Minister Peter Robinson said: "I want to see a full investigation into the terrible abuses which occurred in Kincora. Having received this communication from Sir Anthony, it is clear that the proper route to fully investigate the abuse at Kincora Boys' Home is to have it included in our United Kingdom's Child Abuse Inquiry.
"I will be writing to the Prime Minister and alerting him to Sir Anthony's concerns. I will be urging the Prime Minister to ensure that Kincora is included in the terms of reference governing the inquiry established by Her Majesty's Government."

There is a strong reason to speak out openly about culture of child sex abuse in Britain. There is no doubt Britain has a serious problem and the rest of the world can see it. If this type of report of serious abuse is coming from some foreign country, I can clearly imagine all those made-in-Britain-faux-outrages expressed in that mawkish, false British superiority manner in the British media. The overriding theme of the comment section will reflect cloying ritual of lauding their culture and 'its inherently pure virtues' as if Anglo-Saxon culture is one in which child sex abuse never found a place. The sickening irony is that among the loudest voices in that cloying ritual inevitably, will be some of this same abusers. Childhood trauma if left not addressed, will continue to negatively affect victims into adulthood!

Sexual abuse happens in everyday homes; abusers aren’t untouchable celebrities, they’re ordinary fathers, step-fathers, uncles. Speaking out is the first step towards freedom. For all the media coverage and laws and actions being made to protect us from teachers, care workers and celebrities we must remember the vast majority of child abuse occurs in the home by family members and it is often difficult to deal with. I am puzzled at how these men live their lives on day to day basis knowing the monstrous acts they commit (ed) . Who are these people and how do they live with themselves? Abusive parents can cast very long, very dark shadows over their children's lives. Not just men or fathers. Women and mothers too. I speak from personal experience.
The belief that most abusers were themselves abused has been disproven. Some people, alas, just have no consideration for the people they hurt. I strongly suggest you try to watch the Louis Theroux documentary "A place for Paedophiles". It is very revealing about the motivations. It's also very depressing, as it reveals that most don't actually really regard their victims as people, more as tools for their own pleasure, no more worthy of consideration than a vibrator. The majority believe - sincerely or by wishful thinking - that their victims are consenting participants in a loving and mutual sexual relationship. Most child sex offenders are not sociopaths, and certainly the majority don't see their victims merely as mere objects of pleasure. Such stereotypes are unhelpful and counterproductive. One of the problems with the commissions into child abuse that are happening around the world is it gives people the idea that the problem is being dealt with. It isn't, because the majority still happens in peoples homes.

These crimes are perpetrated by people who don't give a damn for other's lives, who only care about their own sexual pleasure. This is a terrible way to live one's life as a human being, to live only for self-gratification and not to care about the impact of your actions on others. It is a sick way to live your life, as a human being not integrated with other human beings. This decision to behave with brutal selfishness in life is a mind set which comes from - where? At what point do people give up their morality to live lives of craven bestiality and abuse? Not all abusers have themselves been abused, as others have pointed out.

All crimes exist not in the vacuum of one person, but within a particular society. Why is there such a problem with paedophilia in today's world? Abuse of any kind is a horrible thing to got through. You cannot change what actually happened. Revenge or justice might seem like a good idea at the time, but doesn't really make you feel better. Death of an abuser gives you the chance to put it behind you. It's not always a consolation, but at least you know it will never happen again.There can be nothing worse than a child being abused by her father, a man who she should be able trust absolutely.

This issue of is complex. Paedophilia exists within an over-sexualised society, a society which over-sexualises children in fashion, in imagery, in a society where people are supposed to live a life where they focus on fulfilling their own needs, which some take to mean 'even at the expense of others', in a society where people are encouraged through debt to to fulfil all their material wants and to want ever more products and, by extension, fulfil all their desires. Some individuals therefore crash through all the moral boundaries regardless of who is effected, whatever life is destroyed, even when that life is a child's future.

It may be that it is ***natural*** for men to desire adolescent girls, whose bodies have already changed. In our society we don't agree that adolescent girls should be sexual or taken advantage of sexually, whereas other cultures believe that is okay. Regardless of arguments over 'marriageable age' after a girl has effectively 'become a woman', it is a very different story when a man desires and abuses a child. That is true paedophilia and a dreadful crime.

But - why do men think they have the right to do whatever they want with another person, destroy a life, damage and hurt and traumatise a small child? What is the mental makeup of such a man? How do we 'group educate' a sub-section of human beings to develop morally and empathetically to not cause such terrible harm to others? What are the educational changes needed in society? And what is needed to desexualise our societies to some extent? How do we deal with porn on the internet, where sexual obsession and desire can get out of control?

Answering these questions, research and policy and law - is where resources should be spent. Allowing these dreadful acts to be perpetrated by sick men merely by dint of society tut-tutting after the event and possibly, as you want, executing someone - is hopeless. It's inert and passive at the point where people's emotional and mental health and moral core needs to be strengthened and made healthy, so they do not abuse - and it's hopeless in that another life is destroyed by the sick person behaving as they do - and it's hopeless in that capital punishment, or locking someone up for life - is a shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted policy. To build a society where people are not irrevocably damaged in such an extreme way, where children can live safe lives and grow up to be healthy, happy adults - is what needs to be focused on. Not sticking someone in an electric chair after dreadful crimes have been committed, after leaving a trail of desperate, lost lives and anguish.

After the Rolf Harris trial ended, I kept wondering why, as a lot of people did, why more of his victims hadn't spoken out- just to other people, not so much the authorities. Then I realised- well, I have a family member who has been through a terrible ordeal with her father, I know- I never reached out to her because in our family, we Do Not Talk About Things Like That - "Don't Get Involved" might be our family motto. So I got in contact with her, and she said that no one else ever had, not even her sisters, and that it meant a lot to finally have somebody tell her that they believed her. We're in contact now, which we weren't before, and I think it's being a mutually enriching experience. My point is, stories like this can be a good thing because they start to peel the scab of That Only Happens To Other People away. It doesn't only happen to other people. It happens all the time, and it's so, so hard to talk about. Especially as people do tend to make comments like "You should get over it" and "Feeling angry about it is only hurting YOU, you know." So then you feel guilty because you haven't been able to be strong and rise above it and get over it, as well as all the issues it caused in the first place.

There are a whole range of reasons for why men rape, and why they rape children. Some of it is to do with sadism. Victims of child abuse can spend hours wondering why other children or adults subject them to such violent, aggressive and nasty behaviour.

Why are people sadistic?

Sadism is an emotion or state of mind that is experienced by everyone from time to time, some people can feel sadistic more often than others, some may be more likely to act on their sadistic feelings, and some may be capable of more injurious forms of sadistic behaviour than others. Sadism occurs in situation where a person feels threatened, injured, pain or humiliation, but feels unable to do anything about this, owing to the fact that they are not able to communicate those feelings or they do not have anyone who would be willing to listen and do something about the situation. In such situations sadistic desire, a desire to quell one’s own fear and distress, owing to maltreatment, by inducing fear, pain, injury or humiliation in another, begins to emerge. Sometimes the sadistic desire is targeted at the source of the sadist’s pain, and in this sense the sadistic desire can be thought of as a desire for vengeance, hurting the person that hurts you, tit for tat.

Paedophile Mason ran lodge set up for GCHQ

Keith Harding, former membership secretary of the Paedophile Information Exchange (Pie) was made Worshipful Master of the Mercurius Lodge in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in 2011.

The child molester, who died last summer, presided over ceremonies and rituals from an ornate throne.

Harding was convicted of an indecent assault against four children aged eight and nine in 1958 and classified a Schedule-1 offender, which meant the offence remained on his criminal record all his life.

His name was also on a list of about 400 Pie members seized by police in 1984, the year the organisation disbanded.

The Sunday Express revealed earlier this month how Harding met MPs Cyril Smith and Leon Brittan in the 1980s when he ran a north London antiques store.

Thirty-five years ago he appeared alongside paedophile television presenter Jimmy Savile in a Christmas special of Jim’ll Fix It.

The lodge boasts of its Government Communications Headquarters heritage on its website.

A source close to Harding revealed: “The Mercurius Lodge is known as the Spies Lodge because it was set up by GCHQ and over the years many intelligence officers have become members.

“These are people trained to find out sensitive information and yet none of them had any idea of Keith’s background and past convictions.

“They even voted him the highest honour by making him Worshipful Master.

“Keith felt the Freemasons were somewhere he finally belonged, he called them his “brotherhood”.

“When he died last year, they arranged his funeral and made sure the ceremony started at midday because the time apparently has significance within Masonic ritual.”

Spies displaced from London and Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire, where the German wartime Enigma code was cracked, set up the Mercurius Lodge in 1957.

It meets at the Grade IIlisted Cheltenham Masonic Hall, purpose-built in 1823.

Harding ran the Mechanical Music Museum 10 miles away in Northleach after moving from London in 1987.

In 2013, he organised a trip to the museum for Freemasons and their families.

A photograph shows Harding wearing a Masonic apron, collar and medals during a ceremony a couple of years ago.

The Mercurius Lodge last night declined to comment.

Detectives probing historical sexual abuse allegations revealed on Wednesday they are investigating 1,433 suspects, including 135 from the entertainment industry, 76 politicians, seven sportsmen and 43 from the music industry.
