THE ISRAELI SPY COMPANY WHICH PROTECTED WEINSTEIN OPERATES IN LONDON; BRITAIN MUST INVESTIGATE ITS ACTIVITIES

SOURCE: MIDDLE EAST MONITOR
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the story was the paranoid raving of the strangest of conspiracy theorists, but it’s true; alleged multiple-rapist and disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein really did hire former agents of Israel’s Mossad spy agency to snoop on his accusers and on journalists who were planning to report the story that has rocked the world since the start of October.
In a long and meticulous investigative report published by The New Yorker earlier this month, journalist Dylan Farrow broke the news that Weinstein hired Israel’s Black Cube to spy on Rose McGowan – who accuses him of rape – and on Ben Wallace, a reporter at New York magazine whose story on Weinstein was ultimately spiked by his editors.
Hired via Weinstein’s lawyer — to ensure the secrecy provided by attorney-client privilege — the Israeli firm went to extreme lengths to get dirt on McGowan. According to The New Yorker report, the firm dispatched a former Israeli military officer to pose as a women’s rights activist, whilst hinting to Wallace that she also had an allegation to make against Weinstein.
The women used the false name “Diana Filip” and gained McGowan’s trust while pressing her subtly for information. According to the report, her employer, Black Cube, seemed to have obtained half of a draft manuscript of a book on which McGowan was working. Weinstein appeared to be after any information that could discredit McGowan, or that could be used against her in any future court case. The actress first came out publicly with some of her allegations to The New York Times in October.
The Black Cube spy was named soon afterwards by the Mail Online as Stella Penn Pechanac, apparently a former air force officer and small-time actor.
When she recounted her experiences with Weinstein, “it seemed like soap-opera acting,” recalled Wallace when speaking to The New Yorker’s Dylan Farrow. Over the course of two meetings, Wallace explained, he grew suspicious of the woman’s motives. With the journalist, Pechanac used the name “Anna” but he and McGowan both identified her from the same photo shown to them by Farrow.
According to Wallace, “Anna” was pumping him for information “about the status and scope of my inquiry, and about who I might be talking to, without giving me any meaningful help or information.”
Black Cube’s website advertises the company as a “select group of veterans from the Israeli elite intelligence units” and boasts proudly of having former killers and spies as current members of its board, including the former head of Israel’s National Security Council, Giora Eiland, and (somewhat bizarrely) “the late Meir Dagan,” the former head of the country’s Mossad spy agency.

Mossad logo [Wikipedia]
Although The New Yorker reported that documents it had obtained proved that Black Cube invoiced Weinstein for $600,000, the Mail Online claimed that the amount may have been much higher.
For once, words really do fail me. The level of deceit, immorality and mercenary vindictiveness required for this company to agree to such a contract is staggering.
In 2016, well before naming Weinstein in the US press this year, McGowan tweeted information which – without naming him explicitly– identified Weinstein indirectly as “my rapist”. It may have been this which prompted him to unleash private investigators onto her.
Once exposed — to much public disapprobation — as having worked for a man alleged to have sexually harassed as many as 100 women – including 18 alleged rapes – Black Cube issued a rather weak non-apology. “In retrospect, it’s a shame we took the job,” Black Cube board member and former Tel Aviv University Professor Asher Tishler told Israeli news media. However, he defended working with Weinstein, claiming that “the job was taken in a justified manner.” He claimed that the money paid to the company for spying on a woman allegedly raped by the Hollywood producer would now be given “to women’s groups”.
Black Cube’s claims of good faith have absolutely no credibility whatsoever. Talk of Weinstein’s abuses had reportedly been an “open secret” in Hollywood for decades.
What’s more, as journalist Max Blumental points out, Weinstein has a long record of financial and political support for Israeli causes. Indeed, it was former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert – once of the Israeli Labour Party and with a prison sentence for fraud and bribery on his record – who first recommended Black Cube to Weinstein and apparently made the introductions.
Black Cube has offices in Tel Aviv, Paris and London. Given the company’s admission that it worked on a disgustingly unethical project to protect the man who may well turn out to be Hollywood’s biggest sexual predator ever, it is surely time for the British and French authorities to investigate the “business” activities of this mercenary spy agency. What else, we need to know, is Black Cube up to? _________________ --

Tactics of Israeli Psy-Group, Black Cube Revealed in Canadian Court Battle
Toronto-based investment firm West Face alleges a rival hired both companies to help sway a business dispute
Tomer Ganon and Orr Hirschauge 13:0703.06.18
https://www.calcalistech.com/ctech/articles/0,7340,L-3739390,00.html
Two Israeli intelligence gathering firms, Psy-Group and Black Cube, have been at the center of several exposes in recent months. The former pitched a social media manipulation campaign to the Trump campaign in 2016, according to the New York Times. The latter sent its employees to secretly find damaging information on two former Obama White House aides involved in negotiating the Iran nuclear deal, the New Yorker magazine reported. Now, both firms are being sued in Canada in an unrelated case that sheds lights on the firms’ cloak and dagger tactics.
A Toronto-based investment firm, West Face Capital Inc., alleges that a rival company called Catalyst Capital Group Inc. directly or indirectly hired the Israeli companies, both of whom have boasted of their ties to state intelligence agencies, to help sway a business dispute over a 2014 bid for a telecommunications company. The connection was allegedly made through Yossi Tanuri, the director of the Jewish Federations of Canada, who states on his organizational bio page that he was a “commander in an elite unit in the Israeli Defense Forces.”
West Face accuses Catalyst and its hired spies and social media experts of defaming the company using shady methods such as sting operations and online disinformation campaigns, according to court documents submitted in December 2017 and May 2018 to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. West Face is seeking damages of $550 million with interest, plus the expenses incurred in the legal battle.
In 2014, the two investment firms submitted competing bids to acquire Canadian wireless carrier Wind Mobile Corp. West Face, which won the bid with a $300-million offer, sold the asset less than two years later for $1.6 billion.
Catalyst maintains that West Face engaged in foul play in the lead up to the bid and has turned to the courts for redress. In a 2016 proceeding, an Ontario court ruled against Catalyst and upheld West Face’s acquisition of Wind. The judge in the case, Frank Newbould, who has since retired, became the target of a sting operation by Black Cube, incorporated as B.C. Strategy Ltd.
A story by Calcalist in March revealed some details of Black Cube’s sting, which involved sending an employee undercover to secretly record Mr. Newbould. The lawsuit provides additional information about the encounter.
The former judge, who was working at that time as a private arbitrator, scheduled a meeting with a Black Cube employee who had posed as a potential client. While secretly recording the conversation, the Black Cube agent tried to prod Mr. Newbould into making anti-Semitic comments in order to prove his alleged bias against Newton Glassman, a managing partner at Catalyst who is Jewish.
The lawsuit alleges that the sting operation was part of a larger effort to gather information for a defamation campaign organized by Black Cube and Psy-Group. According to the claim, Black Cube employees also targeted former and current West Face employees, their families, and other relevant personnel with false job interviews and investment offers, often under conditions intended to lower their inhibitions such as jet lag or alcohol.
West Face also claims that Black Cube, Psy-Group, and other defendants in the case provided transcripts of the recorded meeting with Mr. Newbould to reporters working for outlets including Bloomberg News, the Associated Press, and the National Post. One of the defendants named is Emmanuel Rosen, former Israeli journalist and media personality, who was working on behalf of Psy-Group at the time.
Mr. Rosen is alleged to have worked with Brooklyn-based public relations professional Virginia Jamieson in order to plant “highly negative media coverage” of Mr. Newbould. West Face said the campaign included defamatory press releases, online blog posts, tweets, and videos against West Face and its executives, using information gathered or manufactured by the Israeli companies and Mr. Rosen, using aliases including “Samantha Beth,” “Alex Walker,” “Jordan Brown,” and “Judge Frank Newbould.”
According to the lawsuit, Ms. Jamieson gave National Post journalist Christie Blatchford a USB with the edited recordings of Mr. Newbould. The USB was given to Ms. Jamieson by a Catalyst executive. Ms. Blatchford reported the encounter in a November 2017 article published in The National Post.
West Face also claims that Black Cube broke Canadian law by operating in the country without a private investigator license. Similar accusations have been made against the firm in Israel, and the Israel Bureau of Private Investigators filed a complaint with Israeli police in November.
The plaintiffs demand that Black Cube and other investigation companies hand over all originals and copies of materials collected in alleged sting operations directed at the plaintiffs.
A Black Cube representative declined to be interviewed for this story. The company said in a statement that its policy is “to never discuss its clients with any third party, and to never confirm or deny any speculation made with regard to the company’s work.”
“Referencing Black Cube has become an international sport during 2018,” the statement continued. “It is important to note that Black Cube always operates in full compliance of the law in every jurisdiction in which it conducts its work, following legal advice from the world’s leading law firms.”
Black Cube’s information gathering tactics have been widely reported over the past year, starting with a report in the New Yorker that the firm spied on women who accuse disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct. On Wednesday, a grand jury in New York indicted Mr. Weinstein on two counts of rape.
West Face claims it has learned of Black Cube’s involvement in its case only after media reports dealing with the affairs of Mr. Wesinstein showed pictures and a video of an Israeli Black Cube operative called Stella Penn Pechanac. According to the reports, Ms. Pechanac presented herself as a women rights activist in conversations and meetings with Hollywood actress Rose McGowen and other women who were allegedly sexually harassed by Mr. Weinstein. Ms. Pechanac was identified by West Face employees as one of the people who approached them with false offers, West Face says in the claim.
Black Cube was contracted by Mr. Weinstein lawyers and later apologized for its involvement in the case.
Black Cube made headlines again last month when it was reported that the company was hired by aides to Mr. Trump to obtain damaging information on foreign policy advisers who were involved in promoting and negotiating the Iran nuclear deal under the Obama administration. The tactics reportedly used by Black Cube included having its employees use fake identities to contact family members of the advisers.
In May, the New York Times reported that Joel Zamel, who was described as an Israeli expert in social media manipulation and the founder of Psy-Group, met with Trump campaign officials ahead of the 2016 election. Mr. Zamel reportedly proposed that his firm carry out a multi-million dollar digital campaign to help elect Donald Trump. According to the New York Times, the meeting was also attended by Erik Prince, the private security contractor and the former head of Blackwater USA, and George Nader, a representative of two princes from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The meeting has attracted the attention of Robert S. Mueller III, the U.S. special counsel who was originally charged with investigating possible cooperation between the Trump campaign and Russia in the presidential election.
Investigators have questioned witnesses, including Mr. Zamel and other Israelis, about the meeting and the interactions that followed, according to the Times. Two FBI agents working on the probe reportedly flew to Israel to interview employees of Psy-Group. The special counsel’s team has asked the Israeli police to seize Psy-Groups’ computers, the Times said.
According to one person familiar with the matter who spoke to Calcalist on Thursday on condition of anonymity, while U.S. authorities did approach Israeli authorities regarding the company its computers haven’t been seized and the company recently received confirmation that no investigation is being conducted against it in the U.S.
Incorporated in Israel in 2014 as Invop Ltd., Psy-Group is currently being liquidated. Its parent company, Cyprus-registered Ioco Ltd., is also in receivership. Psy-Group let go of all its employees in February, said Oron Keren, an Israeli lawyer representing the employees who sued over unpaid wages. Mr. Rosen is also one of the plaintiffs represented in the suit.
According to the claim, management notified the company’s employees that “due to two critical business ventures that proved unsuccessful the company is strapped for cash required to pay its debtors, including February 2018 paychecks, and has come to the end of the road.”
Court documents further include a layoff notice sent to one of the company’s employees on February 28.
A pay stub of the specific employee included in the court documents reveals her monthly compensation was on par with wages paid to Israeli tech employees.
Hayut Greenberg, the lawyer appointed to oversee Psy-Group’s liquidation process, said she has received overtures regarding the acquisition of over 100 Psy-Group computers, but as the computers hold much private information, they cannot be sold.
Through its legal representatives in Israel, Sabari-Farkash & Co. Law Firm, West Face has asked to forbid access to the computers to all but a few individuals, and prevent their information from being erased, destroyed, or sold. _________________ www.lawyerscommitteefor9-11inquiry.org

Black Cube: Inside the shadowy Israeli firm accused of trying to undermine the Iran deal
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/black-cube-inside-shadowy-israeli-f irm-accused-trying-undermine-iran-n877511
An NBC News investigation reveals a business intelligence company with governmental contracts and a special department for politically motivated work.
Israeli security firm allegedly targeted U.S. officials

By Richard Engel, Aggelos Petropoulos and Kennett Werner
As Rebecca Kahl remembers it, something felt odd about the initial email. It came in May 2017 from a woman named Adriana Gavrilo, who claimed to work for a London-based private equity firm. She was writing to Kahl with an offer: Her firm wanted to support the Washington public school where Kahl sends her daughter and helps lead a fundraising committee.
"I'm not sure how this woman found me," Kahl said in a recent interview with NBC News. "I wasn’t employed by the school. I was not on the school's website."
Kahl responded by connecting Gavrilo with school administrators. But Gavrilo’s reply made it clear that she wanted to meet only with Kahl.
Rebecca and Colin Kahn
Rebecca and Colin KahlNBC News
At that point Kahl mentioned the exchange to her husband, Colin, who had been an assistant to President Barack Obama and national security adviser to Vice President Joe Biden. They agreed that it smelled fishy, and Rebecca stopped responding. The exchange died.
A year later, it turns out that the Kahls were right: Something was amiss. Gavrilo was a fake identity, one of several assumed by an operative working for Black Cube, a shadowy Israeli private security firm.
Internal Black Cube documents obtained by NBC News and interviews of sources with direct knowledge of Black Cube’s operations reveal a business intelligence company with governmental contracts and a special department for politically motivated work.
A source familiar with Black Cube’s outreach to the Kahls told NBC News that it was part of an effort to discredit Obama administration officials who had worked on the Iran nuclear deal – and, by extension, the deal itself. Black Cube sought evidence of nefarious behavior, such as financial or sexual impropriety, by the deal's architects, including Colin Kahl. Operatives hoped to obtain such evidence by befriending their targets or their targets’ associates.
Ben Rhodes

Also targeted was Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser under Obama, whose wife, Ann Norris, was approached by a Black Cube operative about consulting on a political drama for TV. Norris had previously worked at the State Department.
The undercover campaign to discredit the Iran deal was first reported by the British newspaper The Observer and by The New Yorker.
In a statement to NBC News, Black Cube said it has no relationship to the Iran nuclear deal.
"Anyone who claims otherwise or anyone suggesting Black Cube is targeting U.S. officials is misleading their readers and viewers," the statement said.
"Luckily," it continued, "the Mossad and the CIA are capable to deal with the Iran nuclear deal and other issues of national security without relying on the expertise of Black Cube."
The firm added that it "always operates in full compliance of the law in every jurisdiction in which it conducts its work."
In the end, Black Cube's Iran-deal spying yielded no compromising information, and in early May, Trump announced the U.S. would withdraw from the nuclear deal. But the use of the shadowy firm continues to draw scrutiny. On Friday, Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee wrote to the founders of Black Cube requesting documentation related to its Iran work.
Marketing its links to Israeli intel
Black Cube made headlines last fall after revelations that it had been hired to intimidate and disparage accusers of Harvey Weinstein, as well as reporters investigating the Hollywood producer.
The firm was founded by former Israeli military officers in 2011. It retains close ties to the Israeli intelligence community, and many of its recruits are former Mossad agents.
Those links are part of its pitch to clients.
"The insinuation is that 'we’re so powerful, we have these links, and we can call on them,'" said the source, who asked not to be identified, fearing reprisal from Black Cube. "They want that veneer of 'we're still the state, but we’re not really the state.'"
The firm has two divisions: one catering to corporate clients and one to governments and political actors.
Its website advertises its corporate work, such as performing due diligence on clients' competitors or acquisition targets. "We help our clients identify their adversaries’ sensitive points or vulnerabilities, or evidence of their misconduct," its website reads. It boasts of its ability to provide "otherwise unobtainable information."
Its government work has occasionally landed Black Cube at the center of sensitive political disputes across the globe, while raising serious ethical and legal questions. For example, in Romania, two Black Cube operatives were arrested on suspicion of spying on the country’s anti-corruption prosecutor in 2016.
"When the Romania affair came out in the news, several people on the corporate side left," said another source — a former Black Cube insider — who spoke on the condition of anonymity since he also feared reprisals. "It created a rift in the company and several people quit almost immediately."
The campaign to discredit the Iran deal is the first public case of the firm’s apparent meddling in U.S. politics.
The Iran nuclear deal and the Israeli raid
May 26, 201813:17
Black Cube’s political work frequently intersects with Israel’s foreign policy priorities. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for example, has campaigned vociferously against the Iran deal.
“They would never work against Israeli interests,” said the source who was familiar with Black Cube's Iran work. He likened the firm to an “almost privatized wing of Mossad.”
He also suggested there was little chance that the Israeli government or its intelligence agencies were unaware of Black Cube’s work to discredit the Iran deal.

The same source said the Iran operation was launched just days after President Donald Trump visited Israel in May 2017. The source said he was told that the work was being carried out “for Trump,” but there is no evidence that the Trump administration had anything to do with the operation, which may have been commissioned by an outside group or agency with no connection to the administration. The identity of Black Cube’s client on the Iran work remains a mystery.
"You’ll never find their name on a contract,” the source said. “I can’t prove that it was the administration other than what I was told.”
But, he added, "Why spend time and money to make the whole the deal look rotten, unless you’re obsessed with destroying Obama’s legacy?"
The Black Cube statement said the company "has no relation whatsoever to the Trump administration, to Trump aides, to anyone close to the administration, or to the Iran nuclear deal."
The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
A 'nasty, nasty business'
In their first joint interview about the undercover operation, the Kahls expressed dismay at Black Cube’s tactics. Colin called it a “nasty, nasty business.” To come after him through his wife and daughter “crosses so many lines,” he said.
NBC News obtained Black Cube’s research file on the Kahls, which contained their address, the names of their relatives and other personal details. But it also had mistakes, such as the make of their car and their daughter’s birth year.
“It's creepy to know that someone was trying to dig up your profile and the names of your in-laws and your kids and your wife and where you live,” said Colin, when presented with the file. “That's pretty sleazy.”
The idea that the couple could be the target of a foreign intelligence operation had occurred to the Kahls, but it seemed unlikely with Colin out of government. “We're also just not that important of people,” Rebecca joked.
When asked why Black Cube didn't target others more senior in the Obama administration, the source familiar with the firm's Iran work explained that Kahl and Rhodes were more accessible targets. “It’s easier to get to people lower down.”
Inside Black Cube and its work to scuttle the Iran nuclear deal
May 26, 201811:22
Kahl said it wasn’t entirely surprising that he and Rhodes were targeted despite the fact that others higher in the Obama administration had helped craft the Iran deal.
The two had become something of a “fixation” for members of the Trump administration, Kahl believes, thanks to their active social media presence and willingness to be quoted in the press criticizing the president.
“There was this kind of fever dream that emerged among a number of senior aides to President Trump,” said Kahl, “which was that Ben and I were actually responsible for being the puppet masters behind the deep-state conspiracy to undermine the president and leak things.”
Indeed, Trump adviser Sebastian Gorka decried the “Ben Rhodes-Colin Kahl nexus” in an interview on Fox News in May 2017. Then in June, the conservative Washington Free Beacon quoted an anonymous Trump Administration official singling out Kahl and Rhodes for leaking to the press.
As part of its work on Iran, Black Cube also targeted journalists and advocates of the Iran deal working outside government, according to documents obtained by NBC News. One of those documents was a Black Cube list of reporters whose work often dealt with Iran, including Andrea Mitchell, NBC’s chief foreign affairs correspondent.
Another target of Black Cube, according to the documents, was Trita Parsi, a Swedish-born Iranian who heads the National Iranian American Council, a Washington nonprofit group that backed the nuclear deal. Parsi says that he was warned by someone within the U.S. intelligence community, through an intermediary, that he was a likely target for critics of the deal.
Trita Parsi: I was told by U.S. intelligence that people 'were going to come after me'
May 26, 201801:49
Sure enough, a Black Cube operative, posing as a reporter, called Parsi about a year ago and pressed him on whether anyone within the Obama administration had profited financially from the deal. NBC News obtained audio and a transcript of the call.
When Parsi denied that financial incentives had motivated the deal, he said the operative “just gave up and cut the interview short.”
A now-familiar playbook
Black Cube’s tactics relating to the nuclear deal – including its use of aliases and its targeting of journalists – resemble its approach in its work for other clients.
As part of the company’s work for Weinstein, a Black Cube operative befriended the actress Rose McGowan while posing as an investment manager focused on women's empowerment at a London-based firm, according to emails between her and McGowan obtained by NBC News. The operative used the alias Diana Filip in the Weinstein scheme, according to the emails. That bogus firm was the same that Gavrilo, in reaching out to Rebecca Kahl, claimed as her employer.
The identity of Diana Filip was revealed to be an Israeli army veteran named Stella Penn Pechanac by the British tabloid The Daily Mail.
Elsewhere, Black Cube’s underhanded tactics have been revealed to the embarrassment of its clients.
Hired by a Canadian investment company in a dispute with another firm, a Black Cube operative attempted to embarrass an Ontario superior court judge who had ruled unfavorably for Black Cube’s client by trying to induce him to make anti-Semitic comments. The effort went nowhere, and Black Cube’s client in that case is now mired in lawsuits.
Rebecca Kahl
Rebecca KahlNBC News
Rebecca Kahl said her experience as a Black Cube target felt like what life would be like in an authoritarian country, where civil society groups and political activists are routinely harassed.
“It certainly has an authoritarian feel to it – to target your political opponents or try to smear them or discredit them,” she said.
For his part, the source familiar with Black Cube's Iran work believes that all the recent publicity around the company will only bring in more clients. “The more we talk about it, the more business they get,” he said. _________________ www.lawyerscommitteefor9-11inquiry.org
