Honey and Barry Sherman were renowned for their charity fundraising
A Canadian billionaire and his wife have been found dead at their home in Toronto in circumstances that police described as "suspicious".
The bodies of Barry Sherman and his wife Honey were found in the basement by an estate agent, reports said.

Mr Sherman was the founder and chairman of pharmaceutical giant Apotex, which sells generic medicines around the world.
He was one of Canada's richest men and a prominent philanthropist.
There was no sign of forced entry to the property, police said in a statement Friday evening. Local media reported that investigators were not searching for a suspect at this time.
Detective Brandon Price told Canadian broadcaster CBC that investigators were still trying to determine if there was foul play involved.
Police gave few details and did not confirm the identities of the deceased. However, they were named locally by friends and by officials who reacted with shock at the news.

"I am beyond words right now," Ontario's Health Minister Eric Hoskins said on Twitter.
"My dear friends Barry and Honey Sherman have been found dead. Wonderful human beings, incredible philanthropists, great leaders in health care."
Senator Linda Frum presented the couple with a Canadian 150th anniversary medal in late November, awarded to Canadians for "generosity, dedication, volunteerism and hard work".
"Today I am gutted by the loss of Honey and Barry Sherman. Our community is steeped in grief. I am heartbroken," she said.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted his condolences to the couple's family and friends.

A police spokesman said emergency services were called to the house just before noon on Friday.
"The circumstances of their death appear suspicious and we are treating it that way," said Constable David Hopkinson.
The couple had recently put their luxury home up for sale and their bodies were found by an estate agent who was at the property to prepare it for an open-house viewing, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported, citing a family member.
Apotex said in a statement: "All of us at Apotex are deeply shocked and saddened by this news and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time."
The couple had four children.
Mr Sherman founded Apotex Inc in 1974 and the firm says it is now the seventh biggest generic drug maker in the world.
Forbes magazine puts Mr Sherman's personal net worth at $3.2bn (£2.4bn).

A judge has dismissed a lawsuit launched by Barry Sherman’s orphaned cousins, which had alleged he owed them a piece of his drug company.

Kerry Winter, along with his siblings and the widow of one of his brothers, plans to appeal the judge's decision dismissing their lawsuit, according to their lawyer.

Billionaire Barry Sherman has come out victorious in a lawsuit brought by his cousins, who argued he owed them a share of his interest in Apotex, the generic drug company he founded in 1974.

“The claimed interest in Apotex was wishful thinking, and beyond fanciful,” Superior Court Justice Kenneth Hood wrote in a decision released this month.

“Nothing can now change these findings of fact.”

Hood granted Sherman’s motion for summary judgment, finding there was no need to proceed to trial. He dismissed the lawsuit brought by Sherman’s cousins, the “Winter orphans,” four boys, three of them now grown men and one who has passed away and was represented in the lawsuit by his widow.

Their father, Louis Winter, was the founder of Empire Laboratories Ltd. and died in 1965, when the boys were still very young, just weeks before their mother, Beverley, also passed away. Cousin Barry would go on to acquire Empire in 1967 with some associates.

The plaintiffs had alleged that Sherman owed them a “fiduciary duty,” in that he had promised the executors of their parents’ estate in an option that the Winter children would have the right to work for the company after the age of 21 and buy five per cent of the issued shares, according to their statement of claim.

Instead, they alleged the founding of Apotex was made possible in 1974 through proceeds from Sherman’s eventual sale of Empire, but that no provision was made for the children to work at Apotex and become shareholders. In the recent lawsuit, they were seeking 20 per cent of Sherman’s interest in Apotex.

But Hood wrote that the option was already null and void by the time Apotex was founded, and reiterated findings from a different judge in a previous unsuccessful lawsuit brought by the plaintiffs (assisted by a different lawyer) against their parents’ executors, Royal Trust.

“As found by Justice (Paul) Perell and confirmed by the Court of Appeal, Apotex did not own or use any of the assets, goodwill, property of business of the Empire companies,” Hood wrote.

The Winters’ lawyer, Brad Teplitsky, said they would be appealing, and declined to comment further. Lawyer Katherine Kay said neither Sherman nor his legal team would be commenting.

Hood said the executors had wanted stronger terms in the option that would have “inhibited Sherman’s ability to resell the purchased business or take the Empire companies public. Sherman refused such terms.”

After the 1967 purchase of Empire, the corporation that owned the drug company, Sherman & Ulster, entered into a share swap with shareholders from a different corporation in 1969. As a result, Sherman and his associates lost control of S & U, Hood said.

The judge found the option agreement “arguably became null and void” at that time.

“It is an abuse of process, in the circumstances of this case, to come to the court asking to proceed, even if against different parties, where the relief and issues arise from the same relationships and subject matter that have already been dealt with by Justice Perell and the Court of Appeal,” Hood wrote.

Barry Sherman, founder and chairman of the generic drug manufacturer Apotex, is one of Canada’s richest people, with a Forbes-estimated fortune of about $3 billion. In 1985, he and his wife, Honey, bought a parcel of land in North York, at 50 Old Colony Road, near Bayview and the 401, for $390,000. The home they built on that land, a fabulously ’80s-looking six-bedroom mansion, is now on the market for $6,988,000.

The house is a poured-concrete colossus, designed by architect Jack Winston, with 12,440 square feet of living space. It has indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and a tennis court. There’s a grand entrance hall with a chandelier and a curved staircase. Glass block, a translucent building material popular in the ’80s and ’90s that isn’t deployed as much in newer construction, is used liberally throughout the house to introduce light into private spaces, including the opulent master bathroom. Sherman’s agent, Elise Stern, didn’t respond to requests for comment on the sale.

Sherman might be selling to move a few blocks south. A large home in Forest Hill, located on a corner lot behind a privacy screen of tall trees, sold late last year, and is now registered in Honey Sherman’s name.
