The "gang of seven" Independent Group of Labour MPs who have quit the party.

Seven MPs have left the Labour party to form a new group in parliament. Sitting as the new Independent Group of MPs, Chris Leslie, Luciana Berger, Ann Coffey, Chuka Umunna, Mike Gapes, Angela Smith and Gavin Shuker are planning their next steps.

Each politician explained their resignation at a press conference, and in a joint statement they have outlined their reasons for departure, saying their “progressive values” have been “abandoned by today’s Labour Party.” The statement mentions Labour’s foreign policy, economic policy, Brexit stance, ideological dogma and anti-Semitism (in all but name):

“Labour now pursues policies that would weaken our national security; accepts the narratives of states hostile to our country; has failed to take a lead in addressing the challenge of Brexit and to provide a strong and coherent alternative to the Conservatives’ approach; is passive in circumstances of international humanitarian distress; is hostile to businesses large and small; and threatens to destabilise the British economy in pursuit of ideological objectives… Today, visceral hatreds of other people, views and opinions are common-place in and around the Labour Party.”


But as my colleague Stephen points out today, and did so last summer when he reported that this split was inevitable, not all the MPs leaving want the same things or have the same motives.

So who are they, and what do they want?

1) Chuka Umunna



Who?


Labour MP for Streatham since 2010. Shadow business secretary under Ed Miliband from 2011-2015.

Attitude towards the Labour leadership?


Abortive attempt to stand for the leadership in 2015, after Labour lost the general election.

Endorsed Liz Kendall – seen as the “Blairite” candidate who was ideologically furthest from Jeremy Corbyn – for the Labour leadership in 2015.


Resigned from the shadow cabinet, citing differences of opinion with Corbyn on the Brexit referendum.

Endorsed Corbyn’s challenger Owen Smith in the 2016 Labour leadership election.

What does he want?

Umunna is a prominent campaigner for a “people’s vote”, despite initially opposing the idea of a second referendum.

Now that it’s clear that the Labour leadership’s position on a second referendum cannot be shifted, the thought is that Remainer MPs like Umunna (who were originally holding off on splitting until March, to sort out Brexit) have nothing to lose. Umunna also has a strongly Remain constituency (Streatham is in the borough of Lambeth, which voted 78 per cent Remain).

Anything else?

Umunna has long opposed the Labour leadership on a swathe of issues, so it’s not just the matter of Europe that has compelled him to quit.

2) Chris Leslie



Who?

Labour/Co-op MP for Nottingham East since 2010, previously Labour MP for Shipley in 1997-2005. Shadow chief secretary to the Treasury under Ed Miliband from 2013-2015. Shadow chancellor from May 2015-September 2015.

Attitude towards the Labour leadership?

Nominated Yvette Cooper for the Labour leadership in 2015.

Resigned from the frontbench when Corbyn became leader.

Endorsed Owen Smith in the 2016 Labour leadership election.

What does he want?

Leslie has been critical of Corbyn from the start, calling the Corbynomic policies he unveiled in 2015 “starry-eyed” and “hard left”, warning of a return to 1980s divisions. He advocates a politics of the “centre ground” and was a loyal junior minister during the New Labour government, when he was MP for Shipley before losing his seat in 2005.

Leslie has supported a soft Brexit with customs union and single market membership, and has criticised his party for not backing calls for a new EU referendum (with one option on the ballot paper of remaining) in the EU.

Anything else?

Leslie faces deselection from his local Labour Party, and lost a (non-binding) vote of no confidence held by the group last September. He has claimed the Nottingham East Constituency Labour Party has been infiltrated by the “intolerant hard left”.

Because his local party would be unlikely to reselect him, it doesn’t look like he has much left to lose by leaving Labour.

3) Luciana Berger



Who?

Labour/Co-op MP for Liverpool Wavertree since 2010. Shadow climate change minister from 2010-2013, shadow public health minister from 2013-2015, shadow mental health minister from 2015-2016. Parliamentary chair of the Jewish Labour Movement.

Attitude towards the Labour leadership?

Nominated Andy Burnham for the Labour leadership in 2015.

Quit the frontbench in 2016 during mass resignations in protest over Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.

What does she want?

Berger, parliamentary chair of the Jewish Labour Movement, previously director of Labour Friends of Israel and member of the London Jewish Forum (both of which she stepped down from in 2010), has been a vocal critic of the Labour leadership’s attitude towards anti-Semitism in the party.

She has received horrific anti-Semitic abuse as a Jewish public figure, with a number of the perpetrators being convicted and sentenced. She and her staff have been so victimised that she has been flanked by police protection officers, and they’ve had to give statements to the police.

She has long been urging the leadership to stamp out “institutional anti-Semitism” in the party, and quit over “a culture of bullying, bigotry and intimidation.”

Berger supports a people’s vote, and has called on Labour to back one to break the Brexit logjam.

Anything else?

Berger faces deselection from her local Labour Party. Two motions of no confidence in her were submitted by members of the Liverpool Wavertree Constituency Labour Party (before being withdrawn), and the Corbynite left are prevalent and organised in general on Merseyside.

4) Ann Coffey



Who?

Labour MP for Stockport since 1992. Aide to Alistair Darling when he was chancellor in 2007-2010. Whip and shadow health spokesperson under Tony Blair in opposition.

Attitude towards the Labour leadership?

Nominated Liz Kendall for the Labour leadership in 2015.

Along with fellow Labour MP Margaret Hodge, Coffey tabled the vote of no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership in a letter to the Parliamentary Labour Party chairman in 2016, following the result of the EU referendum.

Endorsed Owen Smith in the 2016 Labour leadership election.

What does she want?

She supports a people’s vote, and failing that, the Brexit “option that is the least damaging to the economic and social fabric of the nation.”

Anything else?

Her views on foreign policy differ greatly from Corbyn’s, and her local Momentum group have called for her to be deselected for disloyalty in the past.

As a 72-year-old who has served in parliament for nearly three decades, it’s thought that she would be standing down at the next election.

5) Mike Gapes



Who?

Labour MP for Ilford South since 1992. Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee from 2005-2010.

Attitude towards the Labour leadership?

Nominated Liz Kendall for the Labour leadership in 2015.

Nominated Owen Smith in the 2016 Labour leadership election.

A long-time critic of Jeremy Corbyn, he’s been threatening to quit for a while – saying last summer that he was been “agonising every day” over the decision, chiefly due to the anti-Semitism scandal.

What does he want?

Gapes is “sickened” by Labour and calls it a “racist, anti-Semitic” party. He has been a vocal critic of the leadership’s attitude towards those views in the party.

As a Remainer, Gapes wants Britain to remain in the single market and customs union and is in favour of a second referendum – and had been urging the Labour leadership to back one.

Anything else?

Gapes has long been done with Labour under Corbyn’s leadership. Like Coffey, he’s represented his seat since 1992 and at 66, was likely to think twice about standing again at the next election.

6) Angela Smith



Who?

Labour MP for Penistone and Stockbridge since 2005. Aide to Yvette Cooper when Labour were in government, shadow environment minister from 2014-2015, shadow deputy leader of the House of Commons in 2011-2014.

Attitude towards the Labour leadership?

Nominated Liz Kendall for the Labour leadership in 2015.

Nominated Owen Smith in the 2016 Labour leadership election.

What does she want?

As co-chair of the all-party parliamentary group on water (which is sponsored by water industry groups), Smith is well-known for opposing Labour’s policy for nationalising the water sector.

Smith was one of six MPs representing Leave constituencies who voted against an opposition motion in December 2016 laying out the plan and deadline for triggering Article 50, because it was an “unrealistic timetable as far as parliamentary scrutiny is concerned” and needed a “commitment to a white paper and a rigorous parliamentary process to match”.

She wants a people’s vote.

Anything else?

Smith faces deselection, following a (non-binding) motion of no confidence in her passed by her local Labour Party last November, on the basis of her support for fracking and opposition to water state ownership. She blamed this on a “cabal of hard left members” in the party.

7) Gavin Shuker



Who?

Labour/Co-op MP for Luton South since 2010. Shadow environment minister in 2011-2013, shadow international development minister in 2013-2015.

Attitude towards the Labour leadership?

Nominated Liz Kendall for the Labour leadership in 2015.

Nominated Owen Smith in the 2016 Labour leadership election.

He quit the frontbench when Corbyn became leader, saying he’d struggle to maintain collective responsibility because of differences with his leader.

What does he want?

Critical of the Labour leadership’s attitude towards anti-Semitism, Shuker has been hinting at a breakaway from the party for a while, saying in September that “it’s increasingly difficult not just for me but for other colleagues” to stay.

Shuker wants a second referendum, and has urged his party to back one.

Anything else?

Shuker faces deselection, after his local Labour passed a (non-binding) vote of no confidence in him last September. He blamed this on the ideological differences a surge of new members joining the party had with him: “The people who are disconcerted with my performance are disconcerted based on my position within the party, not my performance as a member of parliament.”

As vice chair of the Christians in Parliament All-Party Parliamentary Group, and a member of Christians on the Left (formerly the Christian Socialist Movement), it’s also thought that Shuker feels a strong moral motive not to go into the next election fighting for Jeremy Corbyn – whose leadership he doesn’t believe in – to become prime minister, mainly due to the anti-Semitism row.

Fake Labour accounts fueling “anti-Semitism crisis”

From the start, reporting of the “anti-Semitism crisis” in the UK’s Labour Party has been characterized by dishonesty, exaggeration and outright fabrication.

The real target of this manufactured crisis is not genuine anti-Semites, but Jeremy Corbyn and the wider Palestine solidarity movement.

But now additional evidence has come to light of a disturbing trend which has been fueling the fire lit since Corbyn’s first leadership victory in September 2015.

An investigation by The Electronic Intifada has documented 10 fake Twitter profiles posing as Corbyn supporters who have been posting virulent anti-Semitism.

The accounts share sufficient similarities to indicate that the same person – or group – is running them.

Without police involvement or a court case, it’s impossible to know for sure who is behind this troll network.

But whoever it is, they are clearly attempting to smear Labour as an anti-Semitic party.

Culprits?
It is well established that Israel has been running both covert and overt efforts against Jeremy Corbyn since he became leader.

Anti-Palestinian groups working in coordination with Israel are running covert social media campaigns.

A recent example was revealed in the suppressed undercover Al Jazeera investigation, The Lobby – USA.

As that film showed, The Israel Project is running a campaign to infiltrate pro-Israel narratives into popular, and otherwise innocuous, Facebook pages.

“There are also things that we do that are completely off the radar,” the lobby group’s managing director told Al Jazeera’s undercover reporter.

Last month, another covert operation was revealed after its documents leaked – this one run by the British state.

The so-called Integrity Initiative was launched in 2015 and is directed by British military intelligence officials.

Its documents suggest it is involved in what it calls “infowar techniques.”

The UK government conceded after the leak that the initiative is being funded by both its foreign and defense ministries – over $3 million to date.

Among the shadowy group’s targets has been Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Deception
The network of Twitter accounts investigated by The Electronic Intifada uses a series of fake names and profile photos.

Their followers lists also include many dubious looking accounts, strongly suggestive of bought fake followers.

All 10 accounts have engaged in a pattern of deception, presenting as Labour activists while engaging in anti-Semitism.

Most have also posted violent incitement and death threats, often against Jews.

All 10 posted their most violent and anti-Semitic content as replies to other tweets.

This means that many times, a cursory look at the accounts’ profile pages is unlikely to reveal anything immediately objectionable.

Most of the accounts’ more public-facing tweets are legitimate Labour Party or other political material. Two of the accounts have also posted legitimate Palestine material.

Because they are posted as replies, the anti-Semitic tweets would usually only be seen by those mentioned in them – or by enemies actively looking at those replies for evidence of “Labour anti-Semitism.”

The targets of the troll network have often been high-profile Israeli, pro-Israel or Labour accounts. They have included Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, right-wing Labour MP Yvette Cooper and Jeremy Corbyn himself.

Fake Labour
All 10 accounts present themselves as belonging to Labour Party supporters, activists or even staffers.

Reverse Google Image searches confirm that seven of the 10 profile images are stolen photos – the other three are likely screen grabs from videos.

Six of the 10 profiles present as ostensibly Muslim – it is these profiles that have posted some of the most disturbing anti-Semitism, including direct calls for violence against Jews.

These accounts have Arabic names including “Abu Hussein” and “Abu Omar” while using stolen photos, some of actual or alleged Islamists or Islamic extremists.

One such photo is of Muhammad Qutb, the late brother of influential Muslim Brotherhood ideologue Sayyid Qutb.

Surviving Twitter evidence shows the troll network dates back to at least November 2015.

The network
The 10 fake Labour accounts posting anti-Semitism analyzed by The Electronic Intifada are:

Five now-removed accounts: @WesleyBrownLab, @AbuOmarLab, @AbdulMahdiLab, @LabSaleh and @DeanBrownLab.

Two now-removed accounts which The Electronic Intifada was able to take first-hand screenshots of while still operational: @AbuHusseinLab and @CharlesBrownLab.

Three still operational accounts: @LabAbuHussein, @LabAbuYami and @dgrintz1. The latter was posting as recently as December.

Three of the 10 were first exposed by Labour news site The Skwawkbox in 2017 and 2018.

The troll network’s tweets appear intended to provoke an outraged response at “Labour anti-Semitism,” thus fueling the crisis.

There have been several reported instances of just such outraged responses, from right-wing Labour lawmakers, and even in one case an Israeli government spokesperson.

An example of how the troll network helped drive the crisis took place on the final day of Labour’s 2016 annual conference. At the time, there was a media uproar about supposed Labour anti-Semitism.

This resulted in Black Jewish anti-Zionist activist Jackie Walker being suspended by Labour after she disagreed with Israel’s preferred definition of anti-Semitism at a supposedly private training session.

In this febrile atmosphere, the @dgrintz1 account tweeted that “A good Zionist is a dead one” at Tal Ofer – a British-Israeli member of the pro-Israel Jewish Labour Movement, a group that has driven the “Labour anti-Semitism” narrative from early on.

This reply-tweet was subsequently retweeted by Jeremy Newmark – then the JLM’s chairperson, though he was later forced to resign in disgrace.

The JLM has intimate ties with the Israeli embassy.

Violent anti-Semitism
Another typical example occurred in March 2018, during a renewed media frenzy over the supposed crisis.

A new account, “Abu Hussein,” began retweeting Corbyn, his senior Labour ally John McDonnell and other popular Labour accounts.

But a closer look at @AbuHusseinLab’s profile revealed a disturbing picture.

In a reply targeting Corbyn’s and McDonnell’s official Twitter accounts, “Abu Hussein” threatened “Jihad” against “Jews,” alongside a bloody graphic of a knife.

But the account had stolen its profile photo from a dating site.

“Abu Hussein” was reported to Twitter for violent racism by this writer and other Twitter users.

But the troll network simply opened more accounts – at least four of its supposedly Muslim accounts began tweeting in April 2018.

That same month the crisis over alleged anti-Semitism continued to rage in the party.


And Israel’s ostensibly opposition Labor Party openly drove it, generating headlines by suspending relations with Corbyn’s office over his “hatred of the policies of the government of the state of Israel” and alleged anti-Semitism.

In October 2018, a new fake Labour account began tweeting: @DeanBrownLab.

“Dean Brown” claimed to be a “former Labour party staffer” and a member of Momentum – a group which emerged from the campaign to elect Corbyn as Labour leader.

On 27 October, the day of the Pittsburgh massacre in the US, the account tweeted to Israel’s prime minister: “YOU BROUGHT THIS ON YOURSELVES.”

Neo-Nazi Robert Bowers has since been charged with the murder of 11 Jewish worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue that day. He reportedly told police he wanted “all Jews to die.”

The account promptly disappeared. The goal of smearing Labour activists as anti-Semites had been achieved.

But as The Skwawkbox soon revealed, Labour sources emphasized that no Dean Brown has ever worked for Jeremy Corbyn. Momentum also confirmed it had no membership record of any Dean Brown.

The profile photo the account used was of someone totally innocent and was stolen from a local press report.


Fabricated
This troll network shows how easy it is for an individual or small group of people to convey a false impression on social media.

Despite there being no evidence that “Wesley Brown,” “Abu Hussein” or any of the rest even existed – let alone that they were Labour members – the troll network fooled several high-profile politicians.

This was easy to do, since the fake profiles fit into a preconceived narrative that anti-Semitism is rife within Labour, especially in the pro-Corbyn left.

Those who created the fake accounts also exploited Islamophobic prejudice that anti-Semitism is endemic among Muslims, including activists within Labour.

When the dominant media narrative is so often based on fabricated evidence, a serious reappraisal and extreme caution about future claims are overdue.

Lawmaker Joan Ryan quit Labour on Tuesday, citing party leader Jeremy Corbyn’s supposed “demonization and delegitimization” of Israel.

Ryan is the leading member of Parliament in Labour Friends of Israel – an Israeli embassy front group.

She notoriously fabricated a charge of anti-Semitism against Labour member Jean Fitzpatrick at the UK opposition party’s 2016 annual conference.

Labour Friends of Israel was defiant on Tuesday night, insisting that Ryan would “remain in her position as our parliamentary chair” despite her departure from the Labour Party.

In her resignation statement, Ryan claimed Corbyn is responsible for a “culture of anti-Jewish racism and hatred for Israel” and a government led by him “would be an existential threat” to the Jewish community.

Ryan has been a leading voice in the manufactured “Labour anti-Semitism” smear campaign over the last few years.

The North London member of Parliament’s move leaves local constituents without the Labour Party representation that they voted for in 2017’s general election.

By-elections?
In an extensive media blitz, Ryan announced she would be joining the new “Independent Group” of MPs who quit Labour on Monday.

The group has claimed Labour is “institutionally anti-Semitic.”

On Wednesday, the members who broke away from Labour were joined by three lawmakers from Prime Minister Theresa May’s ruling Conservative Party, who resigned citing their opposition to Brexit.

Labour leaders have responded to the splinter faction by calling on them to do “the honorable thing” and resign their seats in Parliament.

Such a move would trigger local by-elections. The defectors would face a strong challenge from Labour-backed candidates and would therefore face an uphill struggle to retain their seats.

On Wednesday, Labour announced a new policy which would allow local constituents to force a by-election if their MP resigns from the party under whose banner they were elected.

Six out of the eight MPs who have split from Labour, including Ryan, are listed supporters of Labour Friends of Israel.

Yet while they are no longer members of the party, they apparently remain members of an Israel lobby group that claims affinity with Labour.


In July last year I predicted in the viral Twitter thread embedded above that the right-wing, pro-Israel faction of Labour would implement an exit strategy – but only in a way that could inflict maximum damage on the party.

Other MPs appear likely to follow, such as the staunchly anti-Palestinian, anti-Corbyn Ian Austin.


Joan Ryan became infamous among the Labour Party grassroots in 2017, when an undercover Al Jazeera investigation exposed her close relationship with the Israeli embassy.

That film shows Ryan fabricating a charge of anti-Semitism against a Labour member who challenged her anti-Palestinian stance at the 2016 party conference.


It also shows her discussing Israeli funding of “more than one million pounds” worth of junkets to Israel with Shai Masot, an embassy agent.

The film revealed an LFI employee privately admitting that Ryan talked to Masot “most days.”

Masot was expelled from the country, and Labour initially called for an “immediate inquiry” into the extent of Israel’s “improper interference” in British politics, but nothing ever came of it.

Jean Fitzpatrick, the Labour member Ryan falsely accused, had her membership suspended by the party’s disciplinary apparatus.

She was later readmitted to the party, but received no apology, and Ryan was totally unrepentant.

During the 2017 election, Ryan openly sabotaged the Labour Party and the Labour leadership while campaigning.

Despite her best efforts to throw the election, Ryan actually won an increased majority, riding a national wave of support for Jeremy Corbyn’s popular, moderately socialist manifesto.

But in an interview with the BBC’s Today program Wednesday morning, Ryan disputed this obvious fact, claiming of Corbyn that she “didn’t win my seat on his coattails.”

Her open disloyalty led local party members in her Enfield North constituency to narrowly pass a vote of no confidence in her last year.

Although long associated with the Blairite right-wing of Labour, Labour Friends of Israel has no official standing in the party.

Its support has dropped so much that last year it announced it would no longer run stalls at Labour’s annual conference, and even some of its parliamentary supporters have deserted it.
