UK pubs closing at a rate of 27 a week, Camra says (stopping social interaction - driving people to TV)

The number of pubs fell by 1,444 in the UK in 2015 despite an overall decline in pub closures, according to the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra).

There were 52,750 pubs at the end of last year, down from 54,194 in December 2014.

Some 1,088 pubs closed in the six months from June to December 2015, according to Camra’s figures, which were compiled by an independent research company called CGA Strategy.

Some 27 pubs are still shutting their doors every week.

But the rate of decline has fallen slightly from 29 compared to the six previous months.

The closure of local community pubs has fallen down from 26 closures a week to 20, in what the industry sees as a “particularly encouraging news”.

Camra is now calling on the government to strengthen its support for what it sees as a “fragile recovery”.

The campaigners urged the Government to cut tax to help keep beer affordable and pubs open.

“It's a fragile recovery which could very quickly be reversed if the government fails to build on this positive development and misses the chance to support the British pub and beer industry by reducing tax again,” said Tim Page, chief executive of Camra.

A report last year found that had George Osborne not cut beer duty in 2014, another 1,000 pubs would have closed.

More than 4,000 Camra members have already lobbied their MPs to call for a reduction in beer duty.

People in Britain paid the second highest beer duty in all of Europe, despite three years of duty cuts, according to data from Camra.

Currently, the UK pays almost 40 per cent of all EU beer duty, despite only consuming 12 per cent of the beer across the EU.

“The Government continues to support the pub and beer industry across the UK. That's why we took action at Budget 2015 to cut the tax on a typical pint of beer by a penny for the third year in a row, to cut duties on spirits and most ciders by 2 per cent, and to freeze duty on wine,” a Treasury spokesman said.

The figures, compiled by CGA Strategy for Camra, are net closures and take new openings into account.

Nearly 1,000 pubs shut down last year with thousands more letting staff go to cut costs
Campaigners say the Government must reform the “crippling” business rates to reduce the decline
By John Lucas 22nd April 2019,

PUBS are calling last orders at an alarming rate with nearly 1,000 shutting down last year.
Thousands of staff were also let go as bar bosses tried to stave off closure by cutting costs.

Britain is losing pubs at an alarming rate with 914 pubs closing in 2018

Campaigners say the Government must reform the “crippling” business rates.

Kate Nicholls of pub trade association UK Hospitality said: “Pubs are being hit with a myriad of cost pressures at a time of unprecedented political uncertainty and unstable consumer confidence.

“Unless positive action is taken by the Government to address crippling costs, more pubs will be forced out of business.”

A total of 914 pubs disappeared in 2018, according to real estate data company Altus Group.

Tom Stainer of the Campaign for Real Ale said: “Since the last business rates revaluation in 2017, it has been clear that the system simply isn’t working for publicans.”

Around 76 pubs vanished each month in 2018, a slight slowdown on the previous year. In 2017, 1,292 disappeared from the high street — at a rate of more than 100 a month.

In the seven years prior to the 2017 change in business rates, the number dropped from 54,674 to 43,066.

THE sheer number of pubs closing every day is staggering. These community hubs can knit a neighbourhood together. But landlords are battered by a perfect storm, much of which is created by the Treasury. It’s not just booze taxes. The recent business rates revaluation has been the death knell for pubs across the country. The bean-counters at No11 have promised they will reform rates before they strangle the high street. The clock is ticking.

BBC VERSION
Nearly 1,000 UK pubs shut last year, although the rate of closures is slowing, new research claims.

About 76 pubs a month "vanished" from the communities they served in 2018, as people spent less on going out and pubs faced cost pressures, said property firm Altus Group.

But this was down from 138 a month during the previous seven years.

Alex Probyn, of Altus Group, said recent cuts to business rates had helped.

"The increase in the thresholds at which businesses, such as pubs, pay business rates coupled with the pubs discount during the last two financial years has helped ease the decline."

According to the firm's research, the number of pubs slumped from more than 54,000 to 43,000 between 2010 and 2017.

'Triple whammy'

Industry group the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) says more people are drinking at home to save money, while younger people are consuming less alcohol in general.

And pubs have faced a "triple whammy" of taxes in the form of high Beer Duty, VAT and business rates.

"Pubs currently pay 2.8% of the business rates bill but only account for 0.5% of total business turnover, which is an overpayment of around £500m by the sector each year," it says on its website.

High business rates are also viewed as contributing to the rising number of retail closures on Britain's high streets.

But Altus said government changes to rates were starting to benefit the pubs industry, with the number liable to pay rates at all down by more than 1,500.

It added that new rates relief , brought in on 1 April by the Chancellor, would help further.

"The new retail discount, which slashed rates bills by a third for high street firms with a rateable value less than £51,000, will help independent licensees in small premises," said Mr Probyn.

WHERE IN THE UK ARE PUBS DISAPPEARING THE FASTEST?
[same areas hit hardest by universal credit - ed.]
7th August, 2018 by Lauren Eads
https://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2018/08/where-in-the-uk-are-pubs-dis appearing-the-fastest/

It might be a Great British institution, but pubs are now closing at a rate of 18 per week, painting a “dismal picture for our pubs”, according to The Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), with a total of 476 closing in the first six months of the year – 13 more than the same period in 2017.

The Churchill Arms in London is known for its elaborate floral displays
In 2014, the rate of pub closures hit a high of 29 per week. Since then, a number of initiatives have been launched by CAMRA alongside MPs to ease the rate of decline in the on-trade, but the pressure on the industry remains high.

Camra’s chairman Jackie Parker said a triple threat of higher beer duties, rising business rates and VAT is continuing to force pubs out of business, with a third of the cost of a pint now made up of tax. According to CAMRA’s Good Pub Guide, the average price of a pint in the UK has risen by 13p in the past year to £3.60, as inflation pushes prices higher. (Find out which city is the cheapest for a pint in the UK here.)

It means that more people than ever are choosing to forego the pub and stay at home instead, with four out of five people surveyed reporting that they had seen a pub shut down within five miles of their home in the last five years, according to a YouGov poll. Adding to the cocktail of pressures, young people are now consuming less alcohol than ever, but are spending more if they do.

Overall, 431 pubs closed across England from January to June 2018, with the total remaining pubs standing at 40,587, compared with just 14 in Scotland and 31 in Wales.

‘Vicious cycle’

To support the industry, CAMRA is calling on the Government to abandon any upcoming increases to the tax paid by pubs in November’s Budget.

While the chancellor implemented a duty freeze on beer, wine, cider and spirits in the November 2017 Budget, meaning taxes would rise only with inflation, giving the industry some respite from rising costs, there are plans to increase beer duty by 2p per pint in November’s Budget, with pubs also set to lose £1,000 in Business Rate Relief.

Pubs contribute £23.1 billion to the UK economy annually, and also provide a “wealth of social benefits to individuals and communities, bringing people together and making them happier, better connected and more trusting”, says Camra, urging people to do more to support their local.

“The latest YouGov findings, coupled with our own pub closure figures, paint a dismal picture for our pubs,”said CAMRA’s national chairman Jackie Parker. “As taxes continue to rise, more people are choosing to drink at home and as a consequence, pubs are closing down. It’s a vicious cycle.

“Pub closures make us all poorer by reducing overall tax revenues raised by the pub sector and weakening community life in areas where valued pubs close. Fundamental change is needed if the British pub is to survive for future generations. We are urging the Government to take action to secure the future of our pubs by relieving the tax burden.”
