A war hero, a former communist, a smoked salmon millionaire, a charity boss and an ex-NHS worker were today unveiled by Nigel Farage as candidates for his Brexit Party in the upcoming European elections.
James Glancy, a retired Captain in the Royal Marines awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for fighting in Afghanistan, said he was compelled to stand because he felt politicians were 'undermining democracy' and 'our leadership is humiliating the British public on the international stage'.
Mr Glancy, who served in the Marines' version of the SAS, the Special Boat Service, is now an environmentalist and will bolster the party's green credentials, as his leader has previously questioned the impact of climate change.
Former Revolutionary Communist Party member Claire Fox was also unveiled by the Brexit Party and said Labour deserves a 'bloody nose' for not fighting for Brexit voters in its heartlands.
The left-winger who regularly appears on BBC Radio 4's Moral Maze, told a press conference she doesn't agree with Mr Farage on much but said: 'I'll be damned if I let the establishment get away with voter vandalism'.
She added: 'Don't get me wrong, I'm from the left. If you sat Nigel and I down, I am not going to agree with them on any range of questions. But the question now is whether we are going to let democracy be overturned.'
Other candidates revealed included smoked salmon mogul Lance Forman, owner of luxury food company H.Forman and Son, former nurse Christina Jordan, who came to Britain as an immigrant in 1985, and charity leader Matthew Patten.
Ms Jordan said: 'I came to this country 34 years ago. I love this country. I want to stand up for the 17.4 million'.

Ahead of the poll it was claimed David Cameron asked her to shorten her name to Nancy Mogg - but she refused and later claimed 'I think it's phoney to pretend to be someone you're not'.
Annunziata married former soldier Matthew Glanville in 2010 and they have a daughter, Isadora.

Ms Fox was introduced as a 'free speech campaigner' and author, and said she would be 'standing in solidarity' with the Leave voters whose voices 'have been traduced and trashed'.
Former charity boss Matthew Patten said he believed the Brexit Party would help the country regain its 'confidence in the future'.
Former nurse Christina Jordan claimed Remain-supporting MPs had been blocking Brexit and 'hysterical MPs call Brexiteers Nazi appeasers', adding 'they are driving us at a cost of £100 million into European elections and want us to pat them on the back'.
Smoked salmon producer Lance Foreman was the final candidate, who said his past experience as a special adviser for former trade secretary Peter Lilley had shown him only 'political obsessives' could be successful in Westminster.
He added: 'To be honest, I found the transition from politics to oily fish was quite straightforward.'
However, Mr Farage was less enthusiastic when asked what he could personally offer working-class voters, with his private school education and background in stockbroking.
'I was never in banking, next question,' he said.
When pressed, he said: 'I did have a private school education - you can't choose your parents, you can't choose your name.
'Mine called me Nigel and we've got a female candidate with an even more difficult name.
'The things that unite people across the spectrums, across the classes, across the racial divide, and indeed across the religious divide as well, and it is a belief that nation state democracy is the right way to live your life.'
Last week Mr Farage launched his new Brexit Party and announced Jacob Rees-Mogg's sister Annunziata as his first star MEP candidate - after she quit the Tories after 35 years today.
The former UKIP leader has vowed to take votes from the 'tarnished' party he left in December and started a new war of words with successor Gerard Batten by claiming he lacks 'good people' and has allowed a 'take over' by the far right.
Mr Rees-Mogg's younger sister previously stood as a Tory candidate in the 2005 and 2010 general elections and joined the party aged five - but has now jumped ship after Theresa May failed to deliver Brexit. She defected from the Tories to join Farage's revolt.
The 40-year-old mother-of-one, once one of David Cameron's 'cuties' who refused party requests to 'de-toff' her name to Nancy, blasted MPs, including her older sibling, saying: 'The politicians are not our masters - they are to do our bidding. We need to fight back to take back our democracy. It's as drastic as that. It is our fight and we must fight to win'.
She said she had stuck with the Tories 'through thick and thin' but Brexit had been the last straw.
She said: 'But the point at which our Prime Minister will not listen, not only to her membership, but will not listen to the people of her country. I can't sit by and let her do it.
'We've got to rescue our democracy, we have got to show that the people of this country have a say in how we are run'.
Theresa May's Tories are in crisis over her failure to steer Britain out of the EU with the party ten points down in the polls. Conservative MEP David Campbell Bannerman said today the party 'will get a kicking' on May 23 and lose half of their 18 MEPs.
Labour has also lost ground, according to the BMG poll, down three points, with the Liberal Democrats, UKIP, Independent Group and Brexit Party are all closely matched at approaching 10 per cent.

In an indication of the size of the grassroots rebellion against Theresa May's Brexit delay, a poll has found less than a quarter of Tory members are planning on voting Conservative.
The survey on the Conservative Home website found 62 per cent would be casting their vote for Nigel Farage's new party.
It comes days after it emerged that Tory county councillors in Derbyshire were effectively going on strike by refusing to campaign for the European polls.
They said they would not take part in the elections because they 'should not be happening' – as the UK should have left the EU at the end of March. The open rebellion comes amid growing anger at Mrs May's decision to delay Brexit until the end of October, and over her negotiations with Labour's Jeremy Corbyn.
A poll in the Mail on Sunday found that 40 per cent of Tory councillors plan to back Mr Farage's party on May 23.
And another survey for Conservative Home suggested party members were even more likely to defect than its activists.
The poll found just 23 per cent of Tory members will vote Conservative next month, compared with 62 per cent who will cast their vote for the Brexit Party.
Four per cent say they will not vote at all and five per cent have not made up their mind. Another four per cent say they will vote for Change UK, the independent group which supports a second referendum, while less than one per cent will vote for UKIP.
Former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith warned that fighting the European Parliament elections would be a 'nightmare' for Tories and would 'resurrect the beast' of a popular anti-EU party taking their votes.
Mr Duncan Smith said it would be 'a good idea' for Mrs May to set a specific date for her departure, but said this was a matter for the Prime Minister and the backbench 1922 Committee to decide.
He said it was 'difficult to see' the current round of talks with Labour succeeding, telling the BBC: 'It's really a mess, and I don't see how Downing Street in the course of this week is going to be able to produce a solution which unites Parliament.
'Certainly they risk losing a very large swathe of their party - not just those who voted against the (Withdrawal) Agreement, but (those who would) walk away on the basis of adherence to the customs union.'
Asked if Mrs May should name a date for her resignation, Mr Duncan Smith said: 'Personally I would think it would be a good idea to set a much more specific date regardless of what the outcomes of these processes and negotiations are.
'The big problem we face is the car-crash of the Euro-elections coming at us. I don't know a single Conservative - not one Conservatives on the streets, in the houses, in the associations, even here in Parliament - that wants to fight the Euro elections.
'If we fight the Euro elections, with one bound we will have raised a Brexit Party and that will be a nightmare for us.
'We got rid of Ukip by having the referendum and getting a decision made. What we don't want to do is resurrect the beast.'

MPs are agitating for the prime minister, who has agreed to resign once the first phase of the exit process is finished, to make way for a new leader now.
Nigel Evans, a senior member of the powerful 1922 Committee of Tory MPs, told the BBC on Tuesday he would be 'delighted' if she announced her resignation immediately.
'I believe the only way we're going to break this impasse properly is if we have fresh leadership,' he said.

They called for an extraordinary general meeting of the party's rank and file so they could hold the non-binding vote, according to reports.
May survived a vote of confidence by her own MPs in December and under party rules cannot be challenged again for a year.
But grassroots discontent could increase pressure on the 1922 Committee to find a way of forcibly removing her from office.

Heidi Allen, interim leader of Change UK, set up by The Independent Group of MPs known as the TIGgers, launched their campaign in Bristol today.
Announcing his Change UK candidacy, Mr Esler, who left the BBC after 40 years and is Chancellor of the University of Kent, claims the 2016 referendum was won with 'lies and cheating' and said: 'We have to stop Brexit now'
He added: 'I've joined this Remain alliance for three reasons: Stop Brexit, fix Britain, and move on to reform the EU'.
Boris Johnson's sister Rachel is also to stand as a European election candidate for Change UK in the South West region.
She announced her move at an event to launch the party's election campaign in Bristol and has taken a swipe at her Brexiteer brother.
She told the Standard that Brexit must be stopped because it would 'rub out my children's prospects and chances of living and travelling and working in Europe'.
She said: 'These are chances that the politicians who decided to campaign to Leave have enjoyed themselves.
'It is simply not fair — and sometimes one has to stand up and be counted. It is now that time for me. A vote to leave the EU is so important, so life-changing for the next two generations that I am impelled to stand up and be counted for what I believe in, which is that we are far better in Europe.'
QC Jessica Simor, who has 43,000 followers on Twitter, will also stand alongside ex-Tory health secretary Stephen Dorrell and former Labour MP for Wimbledon, Roger Casale.
Change UK interim leader Heidi Allen told the event that 3,700 people had offered to stand as party candidates in the European elections.
'This is no rebel alliance - this is the home of the remain alliance,' she said.
Mr Esler, who is standing for the party in London, slammed Nigel Farage and Jacob Rees-Mogg as 'pretend men of the people'.
He described them as the 'posers of Brexit' and said they were 'selling the same old snake oil'.
'They claim to speak for the people - they do not,' Mr Esler said.
'They stole our patriotism and I want it back.'

He said Mrs May and her EU counterparts were desperate to push the unpopular withdrawal agreement through Parliament even though it was a “terrible deal”. The English Democrats claim Mrs May did not have the power to extend Brexit past March 29, the original deadline for the UK’s exit from the European Union.
Mr Tillbrook claimed the new exit date should have been passed by the House of Commons and the House of Lords before it was approved.
Following the launch of a High Court battle claiming the UK has already left the EU and in the judicial review application, the former appeal judge took to social media to confirm his case was considered to be “strong”.
UKIP have launched their European election campaign with their leader insisting the party is the "true voice" of Brexit.
But just as Gerard Batten unveiled his top candidates, there were calls from some UKIP members to deselect one of them for offensive comments made online.
Carl Benjamin is one of the party's top listed candidates, but he's refused to apologise for a tweet he sent in 2016 to a Labour MP referring to rape. He said it was satirical. And Channel 4 News has learnt he made similar remarks at a comedy show, just last night.

The ComRes survey has also shown strong backing for no deal, with 63 per cent saying that the UK should just leave with no agreement if Parliament rejects Theresa May’s deal again. And the poll has set alarm bells ringing in the Conservative Party after providing evidence that a surge in support for the Brexit Party could wipe them out at the next general election and not just this week’s European Parliament election. It comes as Theresa May plans to give Parliament one last “big bold offer” this week after her talks with Labour and Jeremy Corbyn collapsed on Friday. She is due to take her plan to Cabinet on Tuesday which will include elements on workers rights and other issues discussed with Labour before the talks collapsed, as well as attempts to win the backing of the Northern Irish Democratic Unionists and Tory Brexiteers.

Mr Farage came top for negotiating a good deal on Brexit with 27 per cent, leading the UK out of the Brexit crisis on 28 per cent and restoring Britain’s self confidence on 26 per cent.
Backing for Mr Farage having a seat at the negotiating table and for no deal both stood at 63 per cent.
Writing for the Sunday Express today, Nigel Farage, who has given up beer to keep in shape for the election campaign, said: “With me on the negotiating team, let me assure everybody, leave will mean leave. There is nothing the EU bureaucrats dread more than having an army of Brexit Party MEPs standing up for Britain.”
Mr Farage was in Edinburgh for a rally yesterday, and in a sign of the controversy he attracts McDonalds was asked to stop selling milkshakes and ice cream in the area.
This was because of police concerns that activists would use the products to pelt the Brexit Party leader.

Damagingly for the Conservatives, the poll shows that 31 per cent will back the Brexit Party on Thursday for the European Parliament and nine out of ten of those voters will consider sticking with Nigel Farage’s party at the general election.
According to the widely used Electoral Calculus website this could leave the Tories with just two seats at the next election for Westminster, mirroring the total collapse of the ruling Progressive Conservative Party in Canada in 1993.
The poll shows that just nine per cent back the Tories for this week’s European election, the same number as for the greens threatening to leave the party in a humiliating fifth place.
It is only competing for seats in just four regions with a threshold of 10 per cent needed to win one seat.

Former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said: “If there was any further proof required for the Conservative Party that these European elections are not like the European elections of the past, that they pose the single biggest threat to the existing major parties this is it.”
He said that the finding that 89 per cent of Brexit Party supporters would stick with the party in a general election was only half true it would be “devastating” for the Conservatives.
He added: “For the Conservatives the only way to change that is to become the Brexit Party, to commit to leaving with a deal or no deal by 31st October or earlier if that can be managed.
“There must be no more extensions.”
He said Mrs May has “sadly come to embody the failure to leave on 29 March” and needs to be replaced.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, chairman of the Brexiteer European Research Group of Tory MPs, said: “The failure to replace Mrs May in December has created deep damage to the Conservative Party.
“Only a new and inspired leader will have a chance of reversing this and there is no time to lose.”
It is understood that a deadline has been set for 12 June to demand Mrs May announces she is leaving or the 1922 Committee will change the rules to allow Tory MPs to hold a vote of no confidence in her.
A Conservative Progress conference on 22 June is already being billed as “the first leadership hustings” with contenders Jeremy Hunt, Andrea Leadsom, James Cleverly, Sajid Javid and Esther McVey among the speakers.

One leading contender, former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab was in Peterborough campaigning for the by-election calling on the party to “unite to deliver a proper Brexit.”
However, the danger of Mr Corbyn being allowed in through the back door because of the Brexit Party splitting the vote was highlighted in new calculations on the cost of his plans to renationalise the energy market and national grid.
According to research, the proposal which has only happened in bankrupt Venezuela, would cost £45 billion, adding £2,500 in debt for every household in Britain.
In a further development, the BBC has defended today’s Marr show only featuring five Remainer politicians - Jeremy Corbyn, Nicola Sturgeon, cabinet minister Rory Stewart, Vince Cable and Chuka Umunna - in what critics described as another sign of “ Remain bias” from the Corporation just days before the European election.
A BBC spokesman said: “Labour and Conservatives are both - as in 2017 - committed to delivering Brexit in some form. The Brexit Party were on the programme last week. UKIP have appeared previously in the period. Two out of three paper reviewers this week are advocates of Brexit.”
West Midlands MEP Bill Etheridge said the suggestion of a team comprising EU members was the subject of "serious" debate behind closed doors in Brussels and Strasbourg.
The UKIP MEP said Brussels chiefs would like like an EU team enter the 2036 Games, the 100th anniversary of the Berlin tournament, which was opened by Adolf Hitler.
Mr Etheridge said the move was out the latest attempt by EU leaders to “destroy national identity”.'

He said: “There have been quite a lot of conversations about it among other MEPs and it was being taken quite seriously by some of them.

The secret discussions have only been held informally so far and no official approach has been made to tournament organisers, The Telegraph reported.
Team GB finished the 2016 Rio Games second in the medal table behind the US, having won 27 golds.
Germany came fifth with 17, France seventh with 10 and Italy ninth with eight golds.
British success followed the 2012 Games where 29 gold medals were won on home soil, the highest of any European nation.
News of trying to bring the bloc’s members together for the world’s biggest sporting event comes at the end of a year where key Brussels figures have launched plans for a much tighter union.
European Commission President Jean Claude-Juncker and French leader Emmanuel Macron have led the charge, with proposals for a joint budget and EU army.

In a landmark speech in September, Mr Juncker set out a vision for a united states of Europe.
He said he wanted more financial unity across the bloc, headed by a new finance ministry while transforming the eurozone’s bailout powers into a European Monetary Fund.
Mr Juncker also wants every member state to join the Euro.
Brexiteers pointed to the speech as a demonstration of why the UK was right to leave the bloc.
Among high-profile critics of the approach was ex-UKIP leader Nigel Farage who raged: "I think Europe is about diverse nations and cultures.
“It makes it the most fascinating continent on Earth and provided that all democratically run, they will be at peace.
"I've seen time and again the peoples of Europe in referendums reject deeper integration, reject the European constitution just to be wilfully ignored by Brussels who have either made them vote again or ignored them and gone round the back of them."

A clear majority of Scots want the country to stay part of a post-Brexit UK rather than becoming independent and remaining part of the EU, an opinion poll has found. The results of the survey, carried out a month after the result of the European referendum, calls into question Scotland’s appetite for a re-run of 2014’s vote on independence. “The arguments for Scotland remaining a part of the UK are just as compelling as they were in 2014 – in or out of the EU” Lord Dunlop The YouGov poll found that 46 per cent of Scots would prefer to remain part of a post-Brexit UK, while only 37 per cent favoured of breaking up the Union and being allowed to remain in the EU. The results will be seen as a blow to the SNP’s hopes of securing independence for Scotland following the UK’s decision to leave the EU last month, which came despite 62 per cent of Scots voting to remain.

Scotland Office Minister Lord Dunlop added that another “divisive constitutional debate” was not want the country wanted. “The arguments for Scotland remaining a part of the UK are just as compelling as they were in 2014 – in or out of the EU,” he said. “The Prime Minister has been very clear that we are going to make a success of Brexit, and the focus now needs to be on collaborative working with the Scottish Government as ‘Team UK’ to ensure the best possible deal for Scotland and the rest of the UK.” However, the SNP pointed out that support for independence had risen since YouGov’s last poll on the subject, suggesting that No voters were reconsidering their views in light of the UK’s decision to leave the EU. “In light of the overwhelming vote to remain in the EU, it is right that the Scottish Government explores every option to protect our relationship with and place in the EU – including the option of another independence referendum if that is what it takes,” said SNP business convener Derek Mackay.

The fact has not gone unnoticed by some on Twitter, who agree that BAE Systems has done very well out of the UK-US-France allied airstrikes on Syria, which were sanctioned by Theresa May. It has been reported that the UK’s contribution to military strikes was to fire eight ‘Storm-Shadow’ missiles at an alleged chemical weapons facility, each of which cost £790,000 ($1.13 million) – totaling £6.32 million ($9 million). The missiles were manufactured by BAE Systems.
Theresa May’s husband has worked as a relationship manager for the research investment company Capital Group since 2005. The Tory-BAE links go even deeper, however. The former chancellor of the exchequer and present editor-in-chief at the Evening Standard, George Osborne’s other employer Black Rock is the fifth-largest shareholder in BAE Systems.

Philip May’s Capital Group was linked to the Paradise Papers scandal in 2017. News and current affairs magazine, Private Eye, suggested at the time that Philip May's company used offshore law firm Appleby to devise investments in tax havens.
When asked at the time of the scandal about her husband's role, a spokesperson for the UK PM told reporters: "Mr May is involved in the development of Capital Group’s retirement solutions. He is not an investor but consults with other Capital associates on retirement products and solutions for clients.”
The latest news comes on the back of a recent deal agreed by BAE Systems and the Saudi government for the provisional sale of 48 Typhoon jets to the kingdom. The deal was welcomed by the relevant government officials from the UK and Saudi Arabia, who say it would help safeguard jobs. However, it was criticized by arms campaigners worried about the ongoing war in Yemen.
In the absence of political direction, our institutions have acted to protect the UK’s long-term interests
If you are visiting Hampton Court Palace this Easter, take time to see the magnificent painting of a young Henry VIII arriving at the Field of the Cloth of Gold to meet Francis I of France in June 1520. Their “summit” in what was then English territory south of Calais was staged amid great opulence as the two Renaissance princes sought to reinforce the peace ushered in by the Treaty of London a few years earlier.
The painting, a collaboration between several artists, captures the power of the king, resplendent in his gold tunic and accompanied by a retinue of hundreds of courtiers and soldiers. But it also reflects the enduring importance of establishing good relations with the continental powers. It was part of a process. Just a few weeks earlier, Henry had met Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor and ruler of half of Europe.
The rapprochement of 1520 did not last long and was subsequently broken many times; but in the 500 years since, maintaining amicable terms with the powers across the Channel has remained a central ambition of the British state.
Only in this historical context can Theresa May’s apparently aberrant behaviour of recent days be understood.
As the leader of the Conservatives, she is accused of betraying Brexit and consorting with a political enemy regarded as a dangerous Marxist. Many in her party are appalled at her overtures towards Jeremy Corbyn and simply do not understand why she is doing it.
But as Prime Minister, Mrs May has another role, which is to consider the impact on the UK’s long-term relations with Europe of leaving the EU without an agreement. It is argued by many Brexiteers that she is not entitled to do this because the people voted in a referendum to quit the European Union and the function of the executive is to enact their sovereign will. If that means leaving without an agreement then so be it. But as we all know, it has not proved that straightforward.
People often ask who is advising Mrs May, especially since her two trusted political aides Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill resigned after the 2017 election debacle. The answer, as it is for any prime minister, is the Cabinet Secretary and the panoply of senior civil servants from across Whitehall who report to him. The more isolated politically a prime minister is, the greater the influence of the officials. Some prime ministers are more beholden than others to their advice.
As Asquith said: “The office is what a holder chooses and is able to make of it.” But that ability is more constrained than people think. The image of the all-powerful prime minister is confounded by the reality of the role. They have almost no executive power and rely on the willingness of others – departmental ministers – to do their bidding. Prime ministerial power is largely the power to persuade.
There is no prime minister’s department and compared to heads of government in other countries a British premier is under-resourced. As Prof Anthony King observed in his book Who Governs Britain? (2015): “In almost every insider’s account of the British prime ministership, the words ‘frustrated’ and ‘frustration’ constantly appear.” In Mrs May’s case they will be written in letters a mile high.
Here, then, is a prime minister unable to get her Brexit policy through Parliament, being advised that leaving the EU without a deal would be calamitous for the nation. This counsel, moreover, is not coming from the Opposition, or Remainer MPs, or the CBI or the media.
It is coming from her own officials, the people she sees every day of the week and on whose judgment she must rely if the mechanisms of governance are not to break down. What does a prime minister do when her principal aide advises in terms that a no-deal Brexit will harm relations with the UK’s European neighbours, damage the country’s security, push up food prices, risk popular unrest, and require the reintroduction of direct rule over Northern Ireland?
This is the essence of the 14-page missive penned by Sir Mark Sedwill, who as well as being Cabinet Secretary is head of the Civil Service and National Security Adviser, Whitehall’s Holy Trinity. What was the Prime Minister supposed to do in response to such warnings other than to rule out no deal?
Some Brexiteers (Boris Johnson, for instance) see the “deep state” at work here, subverting the will of the people. But this is less evidence of an establishment conspiracy than of the way our institutions work in the absence of clear political direction.
The Civil Service is there to facilitate the work of elected policymakers; but when the tribunes of the people cannot make up their minds and their vacillations threaten to tear the fabric of the state, the permanent officials consider it their job to limit the damage.
We may all agree that we should not be in this position, with our Prime Minister imploring the EU to grant another extension because her entire negotiating strategy was flawed from the outset. We may well conclude that she is principally responsible for this state of affairs. We should all have known, furthermore, that Brexit was never going to be enthusiastically embraced by the EU which wished to preserve the integrity of “the project” by making departure difficult.
But while all of this is true, Brexit was emphatically not supposed to damage our relations with the EU irreparably. It is not in the UK’s interests to engineer a scorched earth departure that leaves a decades-long legacy of bitterness and suspicion.
The truth is that Mrs May never intended to take the UK out with no deal. It was always a phoney threat. She never meant no deal was better than a bad deal for the simple reason that she considered no deal to be a bad deal.
It does not matter whether you believe Sir Mark’s dire predictions or dismiss them as a reprise of Project Fear activated during the referendum campaign. If you are the Prime Minister you can hardly take no notice and recklessly plough on with all the consequences that no deal would entail. That was what Mrs May concluded. An acrimonious relationship with our continental neighbours is inimical to the national interest today, just as it was 500 years ago on the Field of the Cloth of Gold. _________________ --

Vernon Cole says: “In 1972, when Heath decided to take Britain into the Common Market, he used Parliament’s legal sovereignty to deny and permanently limit the political sovereignty of the electorate. Heath and Parliament changed the basic rules and they did not have the right (legal or moral) to do that. The 1972 European Communities Bill wasn’t just another Act of Parliament. Heath’s Bill used Parliament’s legal sovereignty, and status as representative of the electorate, to deny the fundamental rights of the electorate.
In an attempt to make our membership legal, Harold Wilson held a “retrospective Referendum”, but according to many British constitutional experts, this referendum was also illegal.
Mr. Cole says: “Attempts through the courts to annul our membership of the European Union on the basis that Parliament acted improperly have failed because Parliament, through its legal sovereignty, is the source of the law in Britain and the courts are, therefore, unable to challenge any Parliamentary Act.”
Additionally, Cameron and Osborne were so desperate to stay in the EU this year, they tried to rig this latest Referendum and broke many of the rules governing the legal procedure. This could have made them vulnerable to a legal challenge that this Referendum also is illegal.
In these circumstances, it is clear that any legal challenge or claim by Remain that we should stay in the EU, in spite of the democratic will of the people, is morally wrong, never mind legally and would be doomed to failure. Politicians could vote on the Referendum Bill which passed 6 to 1. So they cannot expect legally expect another vote on our vote in the EU Referendum.

But damningly for Tory Prime Minister Edward Heath, and all those who kept quiet about the findings in the early 70s, the document, known as FCO30/1048, was locked away under Official Secrets Act rules for almost five decades.

On the day Theresa May announced her resignation BBC radio 5 live carried a lunchtime or afternoon programme where one Tory MP explained, live, that Theresa May's husband Philip had been handling all Brexit enquiries from backbench MPs on her behalf and that as such (due to his slipperiness) it had been impossible for Tory MPs to either feed into or monitor any of the doomed negotiations.
When the programme was uploaded to 'BBC Sounds' this interview had been edited out.

Mark Carney has said the impact of a no-deal Brexit would be less severe than first thought, saying that preparations for a disorderly departure had helped to reduce the likely hit to the UK economy.
Although maintaining “material risks” to the economy remained, reiterating that crashing out of the EU on 31 October was likely to have a negative impact, the governor of the Bank of England said “real progress” had been made since November last year.

Speaking to MPs on the Commons Treasury committee, he said: “There is real progress on the ground, there is real progress in the financial system, and that has some positive knock-on effect on confidence and financial markets as a whole.”
The Bank warned last November that a disorderly Brexit could wipe about 8% off GDP through a recession worse than the financial crisis, under its worst-case scenario for the impact of a no-deal Brexit.
However, Carney said the central bank now estimated GDP would decline by about 5.5% – still a sizeable economic shock, but a less damaging one. Joblessness would rapidly increase, taking the unemployment rate to more than twice its current level, at about 7%. Inflation would also more than double to 5.5%.
In a letter to the Treasury committee, published on Wednesday, Carney said plans by governments and companies on both sides of the Channel had helped to lower the dangers to the economy.
He said preparations at the border in France had been completed by port authorities in Calais, while the UK government had also taken several steps to lower the chance of border disruption.
Boris Johnson repeatedly criticised Theresa May and Philip Hammond for not taking sufficient steps to prepare the country for a no-deal Brexit. However, the Bank’s governor pointed to several developments completed earlier this year, including a simplified procedure for customs checks and the publication of an emergency UK tariffs regime for EU imports.
Carney said “the impact of that has been to reduce, in our judgement, the worst-case scenario”, but added: “There is more preparation that can be done.”

Brexiteers should have been prepared for the shattering intervention of the US. The European Union always was an American project.
It was Washington that drove European integration in the late 1940s, and funded it covertly under the Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations.
While irritated at times, the US has relied on the EU ever since as the anchor to American regional interests alongside NATO.
There has never been a divide-and-rule strategy.
The eurosceptic camp has been strangely blind to this, somehow supposing that powerful forces across the Atlantic are egging on British secession, and will hail them as liberators.
The anti-Brussels movement in France - and to a lesser extent in Italy and Germany, and among the Nordic Left - works from the opposite premise, that the EU is essentially an instrument of Anglo-Saxon power and 'capitalisme sauvage'.
France's Marine Le Pen is trenchantly anti-American. She rails against dollar supremacy. Her Front National relies on funding from Russian banks linked to Vladimir Putin.
Like it or not, this is at least is strategically coherent.
The Schuman Declaration that set the tone of Franco-German reconciliation - and would lead by stages to the European Community - was cooked up by the US Secretary of State Dean Acheson at a meeting in Foggy Bottom. "It all began in Washington," said Robert Schuman's chief of staff.
It was the Truman administration that browbeat the French to reach a modus vivendi with Germany in the early post-War years, even threatening to cut off US Marshall aid at a furious meeting with recalcitrant French leaders they resisted in September 1950.
Truman's motive was obvious. The Yalta settlement with the Soviet Union was breaking down. He wanted a united front to deter the Kremlin from further aggrandizement after Stalin gobbled up Czechoslovakia, doubly so after Communist North Korea crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded the South.
For British eurosceptics, Jean Monnet looms large in the federalist pantheon, the emminence grise of supranational villainy. Few are aware that he spent much of his life in America, and served as war-time eyes and ears of Franklin Roosevelt.
General Charles de Gaulle thought him an American agent, as indeed he was in a loose sense. Eric Roussel's biography of Monnet reveals how he worked hand in glove with successive administrations.
It is odd that this magisterial 1000-page study has never been translated into English since it is the best work ever written about the origins of the EU.
Nor are many aware of declassified documents from the State Department archives showing that US intelligence funded the European movement secretly for decades, and worked aggressively behind the scenes to push Britain into the project.
As this newspaper first reported when the treasure became available, one memorandum dated July 26, 1950, reveals a campaign to promote a full-fledged European parliament. It is signed by Gen William J Donovan, head of the American wartime Office of Strategic Services, precursor of the Central Inteligence Agency.
The key CIA front was the American Committee for a United Europe (ACUE), chaired by Donovan. Another document shows that it provided 53.5 per cent of the European movement's funds in 1958. The board included Walter Bedell Smith and Allen Dulles, CIA directors in the Fifties, and a caste of ex-OSS officials who moved in and out of the CIA.

Papers show that it treated some of the EU's 'founding fathers' as hired hands, and actively prevented them finding alternative funding that would have broken reliance on Washington.
There is nothing particularly wicked about this. The US acted astutely in the context of the Cold War. The political reconstruction of Europe was a roaring success.
There were horrible misjudgments along the way, of course. A memo dated June 11, 1965, instructs the vice-president of the European Community to pursue monetary union by stealth, suppressing debate until the "adoption of such proposals would become virtually inescapable". This was too clever by half, as we can see today from debt-deflation traps and mass unemployment across southern Europe.
In a sense these papers are ancient history. What they show is that the American 'deep state' was in up to its neck. We can argue over whether Boris Johnson crossed a line last week by dredging up President Barack Obama's "part-Kenyan ancestry", but the cardinal error was to suppose that Mr Obama's trade threat had anything to do with the ordeals of his grandfather in a Mau Mau prison camp. It was American foreign policy boilerplate.
As it happens, Mr Obama might understandably feel rancour after the abuses that have come to light lately from the Mau Mau repression. It was a shameful breakdown of colonial police discipline, to the disgust of veteran officials who served in other parts of Africa. But the message from his extraordinary book - 'Dreams From My Father' - is that he strives to rise above historic grudges.
Brexiteers take comfort that Republican hopeful Ted Cruz wants a post-Brexit Britain to jump to the "front of the line for a free trade deal”, but he is merely making campaign hay. Mr Cruz will conform to Washington's Palmerstonian imperatives - whatever they may be at that moment - if he ever enters the White House.

It is true that America had second thoughts about the EU once the ideological fanatics gained ascendancy in the late 1980s, recasting the union as a rival superpower with ambitions to challenge and surpass the US.
John Kornblum, the State Department's chief of European affairs in the 1990s, says it was a nightmare trying deal with Brussels. "I ended up totally frustrated. In the areas of military, security and defence, it is totally dysfunctional."
Mr Kornblum argues that the EU "left NATO psychologically" when it tried to set up its own military command structure, and did so with its usual posturing and incompetence. "Both Britain and the West would be in much better shape if Britain was not in the EU," he said.
This is interesting but it is a minority view in US policy circles. The frustration passed when Poland and the first wave of East European states joined the EU in 2004, bringing in a troupe of Atlanticist governments.
We know it is hardly a love-affair. A top US official was caught two years ago on a telephone intercept dismissing Brussels during the Ukraine crisis with the lapidary words, "* the EU".
Yet the all-pervading view is that the Western liberal order is under triple assault, and the EU must be propped, much as Britain and France propped up the tottering Ottoman Empire in the 19th - and wisely so given that its slow collapse led directly to the First World War.
Today's combined threats comes from Jihadi terror and a string of failed states across the Maghreb and the Levant; from a highly-militarized pariah regime in Moscow that will soon run out of money but has a window of opportunity before Europe rearms; and from an extremely dangerous crisis in the South China Sea that is escalating by the day as Beijing tests the US alliance structure.
The dangers from Russia and China are of course interlinked. It is likely - pessimists say certain - that Vladimir Putin would seize on a serious blow-up on Pacific rim to try his luck in Europe. In the eyes of Washington, Ottawa, Canberra, and those capitals around the world that broadly view Pax Americana as a plus, this is not the time for Britain to lob a stick of dynamite into Europe's rickety edifice.
The awful truth for the Leave campaign is that the governing establishment of the entire Western world views Brexit as strategic vandalism. Whether fair or not, Brexiteers must answer this reproach. A few such as Lord Owen grasp the scale of the problem. Most seemed blithely unaware until Mr Obama blew into town last week.
In my view, the Brexit camp should be laying out plans to increase UK defence spending by half to 3pc of GDP, pledging to propel Britain into the lead as the undisputed military power of Europe. They should aim to bind this country closer to France in an even more intimate security alliance. These sorts of moves would at least spike one of Project Fear's biggest guns.
The Brexiteers should squelch any suggestion that EU withdrawal means resiling from global responsibility, or tearing up the European Convention (that British-drafted, non-EU, Magna Carta of freedom), or turning our backs on the COP21 climate accords, or any other of the febrile flirtations of the movement.
It is perhaps too much to expect a coherent plan from a disparate group, thrown together artificially by events. Yet many of us who are sympathetic to the Brexit camp, who also want to take back our sovereign self-government and escape the bogus and usurped supremacy of the European Court of Justice, have yet to hear how Brexiteers think this extraction can occur without colossal collateral damage and in a manner consistent with the honour of this country.
You can quarrel with Europe, or you can quarrel with the US, but it is courting fate to quarrel with the whole democratic world at the same time.

In 1972, Heath was afraid to hold a Referendum, because there was huge antipathy to the Common Market at that time. (2 to 1). So without holding the requisite Referendum, he signed the European Communities Bill, making us part of the Common Market that later became the EU.
Vernon Cole says: “In 1972, when Heath decided to take Britain into the Common Market, he used Parliament’s legal sovereignty to deny and permanently limit the political sovereignty of the electorate. Heath and Parliament changed the basic rules and they did not have the right (legal or moral) to do that. The 1972 European Communities Bill wasn’t just another Act of Parliament. Heath’s Bill used Parliament’s legal sovereignty, and status as representative of the electorate, to deny the fundamental rights of the electorate.
In an attempt to make our membership legal, Harold Wilson held a “retrospective Referendum”, but according to many British constitutional experts, this referendum was also illegal.
Mr. Cole says: “Attempts through the courts to annul our membership of the European Union on the basis that Parliament acted improperly have failed because Parliament, through its legal sovereignty, is the source of the law in Britain and the courts are, therefore, unable to challenge any Parliamentary Act.”
Additionally, Cameron and Osborne were so desperate to stay in the EU this year, they tried to rig this latest Referendum and broke many of the rules governing the legal procedure. This could have made them vulnerable to a legal challenge that this Referendum also is illegal.
In these circumstances, it is clear that any legal challenge or claim by Remain that we should stay in the EU, in spite of the democratic will of the people, is morally wrong, never mind legally and would be doomed to failure. Politicians could vote on the Referendum Bill which passed 6 to 1. So they cannot expect legally expect another vote on our vote in the EU Referendum.

Oliver Letwin, the shadow chancellor, last night resigned a lucrative city directorship after admitting it made him unable to perform his new job at Westminster properly.
Hours after declaring that his directorship would bar him from talking about financial services in the Commons, he issued a statement saying that he would stand down from the blue-chip merchant bank NM Rothschild.
"It is a significant inconvenience," Mr Letwin said of his decision that could cost him up to £300,000 a year. "But there are higher things in the world than money."

The Tory MP, who has faced intense pressure to abandon his City job since the party leader, Michael Howard, appointed him shadow chancellor three weeks ago, moved with remarkable speed after he was questioned about the job by the Bloomberg newsagency. He admitted in the course of the interview that he would be unable to ask questions in the Commons on the highly sensitive area of financial services, to avoid any suggestion of a conflict of interest.
As he reflected on the interview yesterday afternoon, Mr Letwin is understood to have feared that his remarks would make him a laughing stock in the Commons. He spoke to Mr Howard before issuing a statement to announce that he would sever his links with the bank.
He said: "I have been shadow chancellor for three weeks. During that time it has become clear to me that I cannot continue my work in the City. My commitments to the Conservative party will always come first. I have therefore decided to relinquish my links with the City to concentrate on winning the next election."
A friend said: "This announcement is the culmination of three weeks' thought. There is no secret that the Bloomberg interview crystallised his thoughts. Oliver Letwin is transparently honest, but you have to be seen to be honest."
Despite the financial loss, the decision will considerably ease his workload. The donnish figure has been rising at dawn four mornings a week to start work in the City at 7am, often stopping off on route to do an interview for the BBC Today programme. He would work at the bank until 10 or 11am before going to Westminster where he would put in a 12-hour day. Friends said he would only find time for four to six hours sleep a night.
He is widely respected as one of the most original thinkers at Westminster, but there have been questions about his judgment. During the last general election, when he was shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, he raised the possibility of cutting public spending by £20bn.

The government’s former chief Brexit negotiator, Olly Robbins, will become the first-ever permanent secretary to take up a fellowship set up in memory of Lord Jeremy Heywood, before leaving the civil service for the banking giant Goldman Sachs.

Robbins, who was today appointed an honorary knight commander in former prime minister Theresa May's resignation honours today, will take up the Heywood Fellowship at the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government immediately. The position is funded by the Heywood Foundation, which was set up in memory of the late cabinet secretary last year.
The prime minister has approved a three-month sabbatical, during which Robbins will explore “issues relating to public service and policy, outside of the immediate responsibilities of government duties”, according to the Cabinet Office. Cabinet secretary Sir Mark Sedwill said Robbins would use the fellowship to "make another strong contribution to the future development of the civil service".

"Olly has had an outstanding career in government serving several prime ministers.”
After the fellowship, Robbins will leave the civil service, where he has worked for 23 years, to become managing director in the investment banking division of Goldman Sachs. Robbins stepped down as chief Europe adviser on 31 July and was on leave during August, according to a letter from the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments approving the appointment.
Robbins joined the Treasury in 1996, where he spent a decade before becoming principal private secretary to then-prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. He was deputy national security adviser and second perm sec at the Home Office under David Cameron, before being appointed perm sec in charge of coordinating the government’s approach to Brexit in July 2016.
He set up the Department for Exiting the European Union in the wake of the 2016 referendum on EU membership, while acting as chief Brexit negotiator and EU Sherpa to Theresa May.
Before his death last November, Heywood was among several senior figures who spoke up in defence of Robbins in the face of hostile briefings amid rising tensions around Brexit, responding on Twitter to reports that then-Brexit secretary David Davis had urged May to sack the adviser. After the briefings, Heywood retweeted a comment from Conservative MP Julian Smith, who praised the "world class" civil service for its role in helping to deliver Brexit, and said it was "deeply unfair" to attack individual civil servants. "Thanks for your support. The civil service will always be true to its values - honesty, integrity, impartiality and objectivity," Heywood wrote.
Since then Robbins has faced significant criticism from pro-Brexit politicians and commentators, leading to an unprecedented intervention from cabinet secretary Sir Mark Sedwill, who called in a letter to The Times for an end to "sniping" against civil servants working on negotiations.
Lady Suzanne Heywood, chair of the foundation, congratulated Robbins on the fellowship, which she said was had been set up to “continue the passion” her late husband had for policy innovation and diversity. “We are delighted that Olly will be our first fellow and I know that Jeremy would have felt the same way,” she said.
Robbins said it was “an enormous privilege to be given the opportunity to reflect on some of the challenges the civil service faces, as the first Heywood Fellow”.

Is that enormous silver spider that Lady Hale wore her badge of office? If so, it is appropriate. The Supreme Court has decided to tie up the government in a web of legal reasoning so tight that it can no longer govern. In his dissenting judgment in the earlier Miller case about Article 50, Lord Reed warned that ‘the legalisation of political issues is not always appropriate and may be fraught with risk, not least for the judiciary’. Unusually — as if to compensate for these words — his name was joined with that of Lady Hale in giving the judgment on Tuesday. He would have done better to heed his own earlier warning. They are in deep now.

The very first paragraph of the judgment gives the Supreme Court’s game away. This is not about ‘when and on what terms’ we leave the European Union, it says, but it goes on to declare the case is ‘a one-off’, in circumstances which are ‘unlikely ever to appear again’. It is the court’s way of saying that it is justified in tailoring the law in response to its perception of a political crisis. This is developed in paragraph 50: ‘A decision to prorogue parliament (or to advise the monarch to prorogue parliament) will be unlawful if the prorogation has the effect of frustrating or preventing, without reasonable justification, the ability of parliament to carry out its constitutional functions as a legislature and as the body responsible for the supervision of the executive.’ In these words, the court leaps from rightly policing the borders of the prerogative to deciding whether some exercise of the prerogative is reasonably justified. The word ‘prerogative’ thus becomes meaningless. The judges have decided they own it.

In doing so, they are turning themselves into our constitutional court, which they aren’t. If that is what they want, they must accept the terms which go with it, as in the United States. The public must have a right to know their private opinions — their religious beliefs, for example, or how they voted in the Brexit referendum. They must also be selected and vetted by more open means. It’s Hale and farewell to the court’s reputation for impartiality and the respect that goes with it. Having failed to understand the doctrine of the Crown in parliament, and decided instead that we live in the 17th century under the dictatorial power of the King (now in the shape of Boris Johnson), they have appointed themselves arbiters of the actions normally reserved to government and parliament. As Boris tries to implement the largest popular vote for anything in British history, voters may struggle to see how he resembles King Charles I.

As one reads on through the Supreme Court judgment, its prosecuting tone becomes more insistent. It sweeps aside, almost without consideration, the earlier judgment of the Divisional Court. Did Mr Johnson’s action in proroguing frustrate the constitutional role of parliament? ‘Of course it did,’ it exclaims in paragraph 56, short-circuiting the sober argument it should itself make out. Although Lady Hale and Lord Reed protest that they are passing no judgment on the motives of the Prime Minister (paragraph 5, they say three paragraphs later that it is ‘impossible for us to conclude… that there was any reason — let alone a good reason’ for Boris to have advised the Queen as he did. That is insinuating Ciceronian rhetoric — not judicial, and not judicious. ‘It follows that the decision was unlawful,’ they continue, thus creating a new doctrine that the exercise of the prerogative requires, by law, that its reasons be good to the satisfaction of the court.

Our law sometimes deploys the concept of the ‘reasonable person’. Lord Sumption now says that the judges’ ‘revolutionary’ act was justified because if something is ‘sufficiently shocking, you must expect people to change the ground rules’. But would the reasonable person really think, as these judges do, that proroguing parliament for a few more working days than would have been the case if it had risen only for the party conferences has ‘such an extreme effect on the fundamentals of our democracy’? Might the reasonable person not have noticed that, even before prorogation, parliament was doing extremely little other than saying ever more noisily what it had said before? Now they’re at it again. The truly shocking change of the ground rules, from which all else flows, was Mr Speaker’s decision to remove government control of the business of the House.

A clear majority of Scots want the country to stay part of a post-Brexit UK rather than becoming independent and remaining part of the EU, an opinion poll has found. The results of the survey, carried out a month after the result of the European referendum, calls into question Scotland’s appetite for a re-run of 2014’s vote on independence. “The arguments for Scotland remaining a part of the UK are just as compelling as they were in 2014 – in or out of the EU” Lord Dunlop The YouGov poll found that 46 per cent of Scots would prefer to remain part of a post-Brexit UK, while only 37 per cent favoured of breaking up the Union and being allowed to remain in the EU. The results will be seen as a blow to the SNP’s hopes of securing independence for Scotland following the UK’s decision to leave the EU last month, which came despite 62 per cent of Scots voting to remain.

Nicola Sturgeon, the SNP leader, warned in the aftermath of the result that a second referendum on Scottish independence was now “highly likely” as voters would be furious at the prospect of being dragged out of the EU against their will. The survey also found that the result of the EU vote has not had much of an impact on people’s opinions on independence, with a majority of people continuing to favour remaining part of the UK. Only 47 per cent said they want Scotland to become an independent country, while 53 per cent want to keep the Union intact, the poll of more than 1,000 Scottish adults found. The survey also showed that more Scots would rather be part of a post-Brexit UK with no access to the EU’s single market than leave the Union to secure continued free trade, with 40 per cent favouring the former scenario and only 34 per cent the latter. “Inevitably, some will suggest that the high-water mark of Scottish independence has now passed, especially as it was thought that leaving the EU might persuade No voters to change their minds and vote against the Union,” said Joe Twyman, YouGov’s head of political and social research. “However, the situation is, naturally, more complicated than that. There remains a great deal of uncertainty about what the UK’s relationship with the EU will look like…once precise details of Brexit are hammered out it could change the whole context of the independence debate.” ‘Divisive constitutional debate’ The Scottish Conservatives said the poll’s findings “completely exposes the SNP’s post-Brexit hyperbole” and called on Ms Sturgeon’s party to “get back to the day job, instead of agitating for yet another independence drive”. Scotland Office Minister Lord Dunlop added that another “divisive constitutional debate” was not want the country wanted. “The arguments for Scotland remaining a part of the UK are just as compelling as they were in 2014 – in or out of the EU,” he said. “The Prime Minister has been very clear that we are going to make a success of Brexit, and the focus now needs to be on collaborative working with the Scottish Government as ‘Team UK’ to ensure the best possible deal for Scotland and the rest of the UK.” However, the SNP pointed out that support for independence had risen since YouGov’s last poll on the subject, suggesting that No voters were reconsidering their views in light of the UK’s decision to leave the EU. “In light of the overwhelming vote to remain in the EU, it is right that the Scottish Government explores every option to protect our relationship with and place in the EU – including the option of another independence referendum if that is what it takes,” said SNP business convener Derek Mackay.
