Thousands of people clad in white gathered in Punjab's Jhang district on Friday to make a human image of Christchurch's Al Noor mosque, where 50 people were killed by a white supremacist four weeks ago.
Drone images showed worshippers standing in formation, their snow-white traditional shalwar kameez and prayer caps in stark contrast to the emerald green of a public field, as a second group formed the words “Islam is peace” nearby.
Huge New Zealand and Pakistani flags were also displayed along with a giant banner which read: “Solidarity with the martyrs of Christchurch from Pakistan.”

THE EID OF AL ADHA STARTS HERE AND NOW AND THE CALL GOES OUT HERE IN CYBERLAND FOR ALL HUMANS TO PLUG INTO THEIR INNER SELF TO BECOME GIGANTIC SPIRITUAL HUMAN BEINGS THAN MATERIALISTIC SELFISH TRIBALISTIC CANNIBALISTIC PYGMIES THAT WE HAVE BECOME. SO COUNT ME OUT AGAIN FROM THE MEANING LESS EID AL ADHA CELEBRATIONS IF IT'S REAL DYNAMIC PURPOSE, SIGNIFICANCE AND POWER IS FORGOTTEN AND SUPPRESSED.
*You will note the different spellings of ’Arafah/t in this article. This is intentional as ‘‘Arafah’ is the singular, referring to the Day of Arafah and ‘‘Arafat’ is the plural, referring to the Plains of ’Arafat.
What is the day of Arafah?
The day of ’Arafah is the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah and it is the best day of the year. The Prophet (saw) said, ‘There are no days greater and more beloved to Allah than these ten days of Dhul Hijjah’ (Ahmad) - just as we increase our prayers, du’as and righteous deeds on the last ten nights of Ramadan, we should also maximise our efforts to please Allah on the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.
Also, just as Laylatul Qadr is the pinnacle of the last ten nights of Ramadan, the day of ’Arafah is the pinnacle of the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, upon which millions of Muslims gather to seek repentance.
Why is the day of Arafah important?
Firstly, it is a day where millions of sins are forgiven by Allah. The Prophet (saw) said, ?There is no day on which Allah (swt) frees people from the Fire more so than on the day of ‘Arafah’. (Muslim) Undoubtedly, it would be a wasted opportunity if we did not spend ’Arafah in trying to be one of those people whom Allah will forgive.
Secondly, while Laylatul Qadr is the night on which the Qur’an was first revealed, the day of ’Arafah is when the religion of Islam was perfected. The final verses of the Qur’an were not yet revealed, but Allah sent down this ayah on the day of ’Arafah:
’It was reported from ’Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra) that a Jewish man said to him, “O Commander of the Faithful! There is an ayah in your Book, which you recite; if it had come to us the Jews, we would have taken that day as an Eid (festival)”. Umar (ra) said, “Which ayah?” He said, “Today I have perfected for you your religion and completed upon you My blessing and I have chosen for you Islam as [your] religion”. ’Umar (ra) replied, “We surely know that day and the place where it was revealed upon the Prophet (saw). He was standing at ’Arafat on a Friday”’. (Bukhari) The fact that Allah chose the day of ’Arafah to reveal this verse makes it a blessed day, and we should maximise our efforts to draw closer to Him on ’Arafah.
What do pilgrims (those performing Hajj) do on the day of ’Arafah?
On 9th Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims travel to the plains of ’Arafat, where they will combine their Dhuhr and Asr prayers and then spend the entire day making du’a. They will stand until sunset facing the Qiblah and seeking forgiveness for their sins. This is the most important ritual of the Hajj, without which the Hajj would be incomplete, as the Prophet (saw) said, ’Hajj is ‘Arafah’. (Nasa’i)
In pre-Islamic Arabia, pilgrims would travel to the plains of ’Arafat to pray, just as we do today - with the exception of the Quraish. Aishah (ra) said, ’The Quraish and those who followed their religion - and they were called Al-Hums - would stand at Al-Muzdalifah, and they would say, “We are the people of Allah”. The others would stand at ‘Arafat, so Allah (swt) revealed (in Qur’an, 2:199), “Then depart from where the people depart”’. (Tirmidhi)
The Quraish would refuse to leave Makkah, believing that they were Allah’s people and the caretakers of Allah’s House, and thus they would not go to ’Arafat on the Hajj to stand amongst the other Arabs and seek forgiveness. However, the Prophet (saw), following Allah’s commands, ordered everyone to travel to ’Arafat and repent on 9th Dhul Hijjah, as no one was above this ritual. This is why the Prophet (saw) made it clear that Hajj is incomplete without standing in ’Arafat.
SubhanAllah, on this blessed day, Shaytaan will be enraged and defeated as he watches millions of pilgrims, whom he has tempted throughout their lives into sin, repent and be forgiven in an instant through Allah’s infinite Love and Mercy. Whatever sins they have committed will be completely erased, so they will emerge from the Hajj as pure and innocent as newborn babies. The pilgrims will depart from ’Arafat at sunset and travel to Muzdalifah, where they will pray Maghrib and Isha and sleep beneath the night sky, without tents or any shelter, all of them absolutely equal to each other.
What are some recommended actions and du’as for the day of ’Arafah?
For those of us who are not able to perform Hajj this year, we still have plenty of opportunities to reap the rewards of this blessed day:
2. Fast
It is highly recommended for those who are not pilgrims to fast on this day as the Prophet (saw) said, ’It (fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah) expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year (i.e. those sins will be forgiven)’. (Muslim)
SubhanAllah, what an amazing opportunity: to be forgiven for sins we haven’t even committed yet! The pilgrims at Hajj do not generally fast as the most important worship on this day are their prayers, the remembrance of Allah (swt) and begging for His forgiveness. ’The people of knowledge consider it recommended to fast on the day of ‘Arafah, except for those at Arafat’. (Tirmidhi)
3. Make Dhikr
Saying Allahu akbar, SubhanAllah and Alhamdulillah frequently on ’Arafah would allow you to benefit from its blessings. You should also recite the Talbiyah throughout the day, and say SubhanAllahi wa bi hamdihi, subhanAllahi-l ’adheem 100 times.
4. Give a Prophetic Qurbani
Abu Talhah (ra) reported, ‘The Prophet (saw) sacrificed for the one who could not sacrifice from his Ummah, one who bore witness to the Oneness of Allah and [his] Prophethood’. (Tabarani and Ahmad) For those who are able to, following the example of the Prophet (saw) and giving this extra Qurbani is an excellent way to gain reward on the day of ’Arafah. Not only will you be reviving a forgotten Sunnah, you will be also doubling your impact by feeding even more families a rare meal with meat during the days of Eid-ul-Adha.

Muslims across the world have been praising the Muslim man – now being called the ‘Defender of Quran’ – who attacked Lars Thorsen, the leader of the ‘Stop Islamisation of Norway (SIAN)’, for burning a copy of the Holy Quran during an anti-Islam rally in Norway. The incident happened in the city of Kristiansand despite apparent warnings from local police officials when the anti-Islam group said it planned to do so.
Netizens took to the social media to praise Ilyas, though his exact identity could not be ascertained at the moment. In a video circulating on the social media, he could be seen jumping into the barricaded circle to save the holy book from being desecrated. The man manages to grab Thorsen’s jacket, twisting him around. However, the assailant falls to the ground after attempting to kick the anti-Islam activist. Police then scramble to break up the fight as several other people rush at Thorsen. The police immediately took Thorsen and his attackers into custody after a scuffle broke out, according to local media reports. In one video clip, Thorsen is led away by police with his hands behind his back, while his initial attacker is wrestled to the ground by a group of cops.
According to reports, two copies of the religious text at first were thrown in a trash can during the rally, while Thorsen set fire to another one. #ilyas_Hero_of_Muslim_Ummah, #Norway, #Defender_of_Quran, #TheGloriousQuran and Muslims started trending on Twitter in Pakistan. The Pakistan Union Norway (PUN), an important social and cultural organisation, strongly condemned the incident. PUN Chairman Chaudhry Qamar Iqbal, in a statement, referred to Lars Thorsen, and said he has hurt the sentiments of Muslims by desecrating the Holy Quran. He said that Norwegians were peaceful people and Norway enjoyed a good reputation around the world as it respected the rights of other religions.
Iqbal said that the people of Norway and its Muslims were also hurt over the fact that the desecration took place in broad daylight and the police did nothing to stop it. He condemned the police for springing into action only when the man jumped in to stop the desecration and, instead, came to the aid of the agitator.
The PUN chairman urged the government of Norway to stop people who instigated and hurt the sentiments of others through extremism. Muslim leaders in Norway announced that they plan to press hate crime charges against SIAN for burning Quran as well as for verbal assault.

Later, Inter-Services Public Relations Director-General Major General Asif Ghafoor, through his personal account, saluted the bravery of Ilyas for jumping through the fence and saving the Holy Quran from burning. Asif Ghafoor tweeted “Salute to brave Ilyas for displaying courage to stop an absolutely deplorable action. Such Islamophobia based provocations only promote hatred & extremism.” DG ISPR further added “All religions are and must stay respectable. Islamophbia is threat to global peace and harmony.”
Ilyas is now a social media sensation, and users are regarding him as the hero and one of the greatest defenders of Islam in modern times. In his weekly news briefing in Islamabad on Thursday, Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal said the Muslims respect other religions and they expect the followers of other religions to also respect their religious sentiments. In a written statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry called on Norwegian authorities to stop anti-Muslim and xenophobic attacks, adding that Turkey is “expecting those responsible to be brought to justice as soon as possible.”

The news that the Quilliam Foundation, a so-called counter-extremism think-tank, has closed, was welcomed by many – particularly by Muslims who have long been targets of the harmful practices of the organisation. On April 9, one of its founders, Maajid Nawaz, announced on Twitter that the decision was made due to the “hardship of maintaining a non-profit during Covid lockdowns”. Although the foundation had experienced financial difficulties over the past few years, there has been some speculation that Nawaz’s flirtations with Q-Anon conspiracy theories about the US elections and the electoral defeat of Donald Trump may have contributed to internal splits and the decision to close down.
Despite the relief many of us feel, the foundation leaves behind a toxic legacy, which will continue to harm the Muslim community in the United Kingdom and beyond. The organisation was founded in 2008 by self-proclaimed ex-extremists and former members of the reactionary organisation Hizb ut-Tahirir (HT), Nawaz and Ed Husain. Named after Abdullah Quilliam, it received funding from the Home Office and purported to combat radicalisation in the wake of the 7/7 attacks in London. Instead, for 13 years Quilliam reinforced the idea that Muslims are a suspect community and supported the draconian “counter-terrorism” policies being pushed by the government. Its members peddled the unevidenced logic that to fight terrorism, the state had to identify and undermine extremist ideologies, which would lead to terrorist actions.
This logic gave birth to the British government’s obsession with so-called “non-violent extremism”. This conveyor belt theory became the bedrock of anti-radicalisation policies and served to normalise the criminalisation of thought rather than actions, and therefore the targeting of individuals who had not committed any crimes but were imagined to be at risk of committing unlawful acts in the future.
In the time that Quilliam was active, the counter-extremism apparatus in the UK grew more aggressive and pervasive by infiltrating every area of public and even private life, with public sector workers being drafted in to help spot these ill-defined signs of radicalisation. This process was cheered on energetically by the foundation.
In addition, it stoked up considerable hate towards Muslims and racialised communities in Britain. For example, when following the child sexual exploitation scandal in Rochdale and other cities, Quilliam published a report claiming that 84 percent of “grooming gang offenders” were Asian. This was later debunked by the Home Office’s own report that confirmed research has found that group-based offenders “are most commonly White”. Unfortunately, much of the damage had already been done. As Dr Ella Cockbain, a researcher on child exploitation, pointed out in her criticism of the report by Quilliam, “the more ‘grooming gangs’ are seen as a Muslim problem, the more a ‘counter-extremism’ think-tank stands to gain.”
Quilliam was not only confident in making statements and publishing “findings” which were not backed up by data, but it was also ruthless in making sure it held the attention of the government and international arena when it came to Muslims and counter-extremism. The foundation, in assuming the role of protectors of democracy, attempted to tarnish a whole spectrum of Muslim groups and collectives as being aligned with terrorist ideology. In fact, it supplied the Home Office with a “blacklist” which included the Islam TV channel, Muslim Safety Forum and the Islamic Human Rights Commission.
As a result of these activities, the reputation of the foundation within Muslim communities was quite low; many approached its work with distrust. Had its members sought to undertake de-radicalisation work among British Muslims, it is highly doubtful that they would have gotten anywhere. This, however, was clearly never the intention.
Quilliam’s PR stunt with English Defence League (EDL) founder, Tommy Robinson, is one striking example of how little its members cared about or considered Muslims. In 2013, the foundation announced that it had worked with the far-right leader to help him leave the EDL and his anti-Muslim activism; it even held a high-profile official press conference on the occasion. Robinson, who had spent years mobilising people against Muslim communities, targeting their mosques, and using them as scapegoats for every imaginable social, political and economic problem, announced he would start working with Quilliam. Just two years later, however, he established the UK branch of the German anti-Muslim, anti-migrant far-right group, PEGIDA.
This was not the only deeply problematic association Quilliam had. Among its funders, there were quite a few Islamophobic entities and figures. In 2012, for example, the foundation received $75,000 from the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, which often funds so-called counter-jihad organisations including the anti-Muslim hate group the David Horowitz Freedom Centre. It also won a grant of over $1,000,000 from the John Templeton Foundation, a conservative organisation with links to the Tea Party in the US and reactionary Christian groups. Its former head, Jack Templeton, had funded groups opposing same-sex marriage and defending the war in Iraq. Another of Quilliam’s donors was “New Atheist” figure Sam Harris, who supports the use of torture and has encouraged the profiling of Muslims in his call for a “war with Islam”.
While Quilliam’s deplorable work towards the institutionalisation of Islamophobia and the destruction of civil liberties may be over, the damage that it has done will continue to be felt. It is enshrined in our counter-extremism policies, in the rhetoric of our politicians, and the far-right thugs that they have empowered as well as legitimised through their work.
As Dr Rizwaan Sabir, a lecturer in criminology who specialises in counter-terrorism at Liverpool John Moores University, told me recently, Quilliam’s impact “should not be taken lightly, since they, especially some key individuals from the organisation, had access to high-ranking policymakers, politicians, and civil servants and were therefore able to influence their ideas around security policy as well as the way they viewed Muslim organisations”.
Quilliam’s groundwork continues to bear fruit through state-led counter-extremism practices, like the Prevent programme, which profiles and criminalises Muslims. Threats to our civil liberties continue to worsen as the government pushes through more and more repressive policies, from the Coronavirus Act being extended, to the introduction of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill attempting to hinder our right to protest. All of this falls into the remit of state securitisation that was so strongly supported by Quilliam.
The work of normalising and pushing forward the government’s narrative has been done and it no longer requires Nawaz and his ilk to help in the process. In addition, there are still other neo-conservative think-tanks, like the Henry Jackson Society, which will carry forward their legacy.
Our focus must now be on completely dismantling the counter-extremism apparatus which continues to be used to erode our civil liberties, defending our freedoms and fighting Islamophobia. Quilliam faced years of opposition and critique from a broad coalition of trade unions, students, teachers, healthcare professionals, anti-racist activists and politicians who all opposed the Prevent strategy.
It is this broad network that must be reinforced and mobilised. As Islamophobic laws are passed with increasing speed across the continent, such mobilisation is urgently needed.

Abu Obayda, the spokesman for Hamas' armed wing the Ezzedine al–Qassam Brigades, yesterday delivered a televised address to mark the occasion of Eid al Fitr.
After extending best wishes to people Gaza, the West Bank, Jerusalem and the whole of Palestine, he appraised the ongoing confrontation with Israel. "This battle has come to affirm that Gaza, the West Bank, Jerusalem and Palestine that was occupied in 1948 are all one body, one people, one destiny and one resistance."
As for our message "to the criminal and cowardly enemy," Abu Obayda said: "The entire world has seen your failure and your shame. What an alleged state that claims to be the primary power in the region while it directs its rage and rockets of malice toward safe apartments, civilian residential towers and public institutions and targets children, women and civilian facilities to take pride in the amount of destruction and fire power."
With regard to the Ezzedine al–Qassam Brigades, the spokesman said, "When it comes to responding to your aggression and rising in support of our holy places and our folks, there are no red lines and no sacred engagement rules and no complex calculations."
He assured the Palestinian masses and their supporters everywhere that:
"This weak entity can be defeated. It will surely be defeated and certainly be buried. Because it is an entity based on cheating, on falsehood, on injustice and on aggression. All you need do is rally around your cause and your resistance and rise to rescue the Mosque to which your Prophet, peace be upon him, was taken on a night journey."
A translation of the full address is as follows:
Praise be to Allah who provides the Mujahideen with victory; who humiliates the tyrants; and peace and prayers be upon the Prophet, the Mujahid and the Witness, upon his kin and companions, and upon those who hoist his flag until the Day of Judgement.
Happy Eid to our people and our Islamic Ummah, may it come again every year while we enjoy good life, victory and empowerment.
On the occasion of the blessed Eid Al-Fitr, an Eid that comes back to the land of Palestine when it has drawn its map with the noble blood of martyrs and the offerings of the resistance that knows no limits, we wish the best for our people in Gaza that performs jihad, in the valiant West Bank, in the blessed Jerusalem and in the whole of Palestine. We wish the families of our martyrs the best, we wish them honour and loftiness. We wish our wounded and our captives and their families the best, we wish them pride and dignity. We wish our lofty resistance the best, we wish it victory and glory.
O masses of our great people everywhere. O our Arab and Islamic Ummah, our people's battle with the foul enemy has been going on since it set foot on this land. Jerusalem has always been the focal point of the conflict and the icon of uprisings and the trigger of revolutions.
Today we are waging one of these battles, the Sword of Jerusalem Battle, which came in order to complement our people's uprising in Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa and in support of Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, which is threatened with eviction and Judaization, and in response to the cries of our people in the arenas and squares of the Holy City. Any price we pay, and will pay, is a sacrifice for Al-Aqsa and Jerusalem. For our existence has no meaning if we do not mobilise for Al-Aqsa rush in support for Jerusalem.
Our weapons and our accumulation of power, and our preparations over many years has only been for our land and for defending our people and our holy places. This battle has come to affirm that Gaza, the West Bank, Jerusalem and Palestine that was occupied in 1948 are all one body, one people, one destiny and one resistance. Therefore, it is not strange that a group of Al-Qassam heroes and pious men are martyred, foremost among them the great commander Bassim Eissa (Abu Imad), who spent his life as a solid tenacious mujahid in these blessed brigades until he met his Lord as a martyr yesterday morning with a group of great Al-Qassam engineers and heroes of military industry who have a clear thumb print and present hand in everything Al-Qassam Brigades possess and what it is offering today in the fields of Jihad and resistance. Congratulations to them for gaining martyrdom in the most honourable of battles and locations and in the best of times and in the holiest of lands and dearest of places.
Our pain over losing these honourable men is equal to our pride in paying every price and offering everything, expensive or otherwise, for the sake of our Jerusalem, our Aqsa, and the dignity of our people. The battle is worth the sacrifices and the objective is dear and the dowry is huge.
Greetings to the martyrs of The Sword of Jerusalem operation, of commanders and soldiers and of all the sons of our heroic people, who rallied around their Al-Aqsa and their resistance and they knew that the price would be paid in blood, souls, wealth, children and buildings.
Our people … our folks What distinguishes this battle is the unity of our people in all arenas and their engagement with the occupation at different levels depending on the circumstances in the field. For our people do not agree on anything as they do on the Jewel of the Crown, their sacred capital, and do not rally around something as they do around the option of resistance in dealing with this arrogant enemy. Greetings to our revolting people in Jerusalem, the West Bank and in Palestine that was occupied in 1948 who are the first line of defence for Al-Aqsa and the holy places and are at the immediate frontline with this enemy. We would like to reassure you that we have more and in our pouch; there is plenty that will delight you and make you raise you heads high and make you proud in front of the world of your resistance and its men, its martyrs and its heroes. As for our message to the criminal and cowardly enemy, we give you the glad tidings. The entire world has seen your failure and your shame. Such cowardly exhibition did not conceal from the world's view the truth about your brittle entity as it ached under our rocket strikes that are unprecedented in the history of the conflict with you since you stole our land in 1948. Despite the huge disparity in power between us and you in terms of military capabilities, we have, with Allah's help, directed huge rocket strikes, which no state has dared, since the Nakba, direct toward you. The decision to strike Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Dimona, Ashkelon, Ashdod and Beersheba, and what's before them and after them of our occupied cities, is easier for us than a drink of water if our Al-Aqsa is desecrated and our dignity is violated.
When it comes to responding to your aggression and rising in support of our holy places and our folks, there are no red lines and no sacred engagement rules and no complex calculations.
Our strikes will be ready whenever you resume aggression or go further in it. You, stupid ones, have possessed the technology, the missiles and the planes. But you have not been able to decipher (the mystery about) this great people and this valiant resistance. Have [your] assassinations ever frightened us? Or have you ever seen a Palestinian child fearing your tyranny? And have you ever been able to stop our resistance through siege or destruction? Deploy as much as you wish of forces and mobilise all your mounting troops and infantry, from the sea, from the air and from the ground. We have prepared for you types of death that will make you curse yourselves. You will not see from us weakness or fear or retreat. You'll get nothing from us but the sword and the fire. History and the present are best witnesses. The future will be the decisive moment and the proof, with the help of Allah the Almighty.

Greetings to the wounded, to the casualties and to those who hurt. The biggest greeting goes to our proud people in Gaza who are not content with other than glory, honour and coming first in defence of the land the Al-Aqsa, and who always lead with the flag in hand in all the battles and pay the cost on behalf of an entire Ummah.
Freedom for those who are in captivity whose predicament will soon come to an end, God willing.
Greetings to our people in exile and in the diaspora who will, God willing, return once the entity of injustice is destroyed.
