With her three-month-old baby nestling in her arms, Gleyse Kelly recalled how overjoyed she was when the doctor told her that after three boys, her fourth child would be a girl.

But in the seventh month of her pregnancy, the ultrasound showed that the girl’s head was not developing properly. In the report accompanying the images, her doctor had scribbled the word: “Microcephaly?”

“I’d never even heard of it before,” said the 27-year-old toll-booth attendant who lives in Recife, in the state of Pernambuco. “On the internet, it said she wouldn’t be able to walk or talk. I was terrified.”

After weeks of uncertainty, and further inconclusive ultrasounds, on 16 October her obstetrician finally confirmed the diagnosis.

“It was devastating,” she said. “But we had no time to react.”

The next day her daughter, Maria Giovanna, was born. So far, she has proven a healthy baby, who eats well, sleeps well and reacts to visual and audio stimuli. “She is just like any other child,” Ms Kelly says. “It’s just that she has a small head.”

It was only after her birth that doctors mentioned a possible link between her condition and the Zika virus, a disease first registered in north-east Brazil in May 2015.

Virologists have yet to understand how the disease – first recognised in Uganda in the 1940s – reached Brazil, or why it has spread so fast. On Monday, the World Health Organisation warned that the virus is likely to spread to every country in the Americas apart from Canada and Chile.

At present there is neither a vaccine nor a cure for the virus, and authorities across the hemisphere are scrambling to come up with a response.

Like other tropical fevers, such as dengue and chikungunya, Zika is transmitted by Aedes aegypti, a species of mosquito that thrives in the stagnant water pools that proliferate across Brazilian cities during the country’s hot, wet summers.

The virus results in many of the same symptoms as dengue and chikungunya: fever, joint pain and rashes. If anything, its distinguishing feature, at least at first, appeared to be its relative mildness.

By the time Maria Giovanna was born, doctors in Pernambuco had noticed a surge in the number of cases of microcephaly, which appeared to be connected to an outbreak of Zika.

On one day in August last year, Dr Vanessa Van Der Linden, a neuro-paediatrician working at Recife’s Hospital Barão de Lucena, saw three babies with the condition....

Jaxon Buell was born on Aug. 27, 2014, in Orlando, Florida.

He has microhydranencephaly, a combination of microcephaly and hydrancephaly.

(Microcephaly 'can be caused by the Zika virus')

'Jaxon Strong'

Jaxon's story and photos have made worldwide headlines as Jaxon's parents, Brandon and Brittany Buell of Tavares, Florida, have spoken about the boy's life and prognosis.

The Zika virus may have been spread by genetically-modified mosquitoes (GMMs) in Brazil.

In mid-2012, the British biotech company Oxitec released the super bugs with the aim of reducing the overall mosquito population in northeast Brazil.

The Zika outbreak epicenter is in the area where GM Mosquitoes were released In 2015.

GMO mosquitoes could be cause of Zika outbreak, critics say. / Zika Virus Caused by GMO Mosquitos? : snopes.com

In 2016, we are told that the USA's first confirmed cases of the Zika virus are in Los Angeles County, Virginia and Minnesota.

Pregnant mothers with the Zika virus can produce deformed children (microcephaly)

The virus is spread by mosquitoes.

The Zika story begins in Uganda.

The Uganda/East African Virus Research Institute, in Entebbe, Uganda, was established in 1936 by the Rockefeller Foundation.

The institute has a field station at the Zika Forest near Entebbe.[1]

In 1947 scientists placed a rhesus macaque in a cage in the Zika Forest, near the institute in Entebbe, Uganda.

The monkey developed a fever, and researchers isolated from its serum a transmissible agent that was first described as Zika virus in 1952.[35]

It was subsequently isolated from a human in Nigeria in 1954.

From its discovery until 2007, confirmed cases of Zika virus infection from Africa and Southeast Asia were rare.[36]

In April 2007 the first outbreak outside of Africa and Asia occurred on the island of Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia.

The American Peace Corps has been active in Yap since 1966. Other US-based non-profit organizations, including Habele, have an ongoing presence on Yap.

Since April 2015, a large, ongoing outbreak of Zika virus that began in Brazil has spread to much of South and Central America, and the Caribbean.

Pandora's box: how GM mosquitos could have caused Brazil's microcephaly disaster
Oliver Tickell
1st February 2016
http://www.theecologist.org/News/news_analysis/2987024/pandoras_box_ho w_gm_mosquitos_could_have_caused_brazils_microcephaly_diasaster.html

In Brazil's microcephaly epidemic, one vital question remains unanswered: how did the Zika virus suddenly learn how to disrupt the development of human embryos? The answer may lie in a sequence of 'jumping DNA' used to engineer the virus's mosquito vector - and released into the wild four years ago in the precise area of Brazil where the microcephaly crisis is most acute.
These 'promiscuous' transposons have found special favour with genetic engineers, whose goal is to create 'universal' systems for transferring genes into any and every species on earth. Almost none of the geneticists has considered the hazards involved.
Since August 2015, a large number of babies in Northeast Brazil have been born with very small heads, a condition known as microcephaly, and with other serious malformations. 4,180 suspected cases have been reported.
Epidemiologists have found a convincing correlation between the incidence of the natal deformities and maternal infections with the Zika virus, first discovered in Uganda's Zika Valley in 1947, which normally produces non-serious illness.
The correlation has been evidenced through the geographical distrubution of Zika infections and the wave of deformities. Zika virus has also been detected in the amniotic fluids and other tissues of the affected babies and their mothers.
This latter finding was recently reported by AS Oliveira Melo et al in a scientific paper published in the journal Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology, which noted evidence of intra-uterine infection. They also warn:
"As with other intrauterine infections, it is possible that the reported cases of microcephaly represent only the more severely affected children and that newborns with less severe disease, affecting not only the brain but also other organs, have not yet been diagnosed."

The Brazilian Health Minister, Marcelo Castro, says he has "100% certainty" that there is a link between Zika and microcephaly. His view is supported by the medical community worldwide, including by the US Center for Disease Control.
Oliveira Melo et al draw attention to a mystery that lies at the heart of the affair: "It is difficult to explain why there have been no fetal cases of Zika virus infection reported until now but this may be due to the underreporting of cases, possible early acquisition of immunity in endemic areas or due to the rarity of the disease until now.
"As genomic changes in the virus have been reported, the possibility of a new, more virulent, strain needs to be considered. Until more cases are diagnosed and histopathological proof is obtained, the possibility of other etiologies cannot be ruled out."

And this is the key question: how - if indeed Zika really is the problem, as appears likely - did this relatively innocuous virus acquire the ability to produce these terrible malformations in unborn human babies?
Oxitec's GM mosquitoes

An excellent article by Claire Bernish published last week on AntiMedia draws attention to an interesting aspect of the matter which has escaped mainstream media attention: the correlation between the incidence of Zika and the area of release of genetically modified Aedes aegypti mosquitos engineered for male insterility (see maps, above right).
The purpose of the release was to see if it controlled population of the mosquitos, which are the vector of Dengue fever, a potentially lethal disease. The same species also transmits the Zika virus.
The releases took in 2011 and 2012 in the Itaberaba suburb of the city of Juazeiro, Bahia, Northeast Brazil, about 500 km west of ther coastal city of Recife. The experiment was written up in July 2015 in the journal PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases in a paper titled 'Suppression of a Field Population of Aedes aegypti in Brazil by Sustained Release of Transgenic Male Mosquitoes' by Danilo O. Carvalho et al.
An initial 'rangefinder of 30,000 GM mosquitos per week took place between 19th May and 29th June 2011, followed by a much larger release of 540,000 per week in early 2012, ending on 11th February.
At the end of it the scientists claimed "effective control of a wild population of Ae. aegypti by sustained releases of OX513A male Ae. aegypti. We diminished Ae. aegypti population by 95% (95% CI: 92.2%-97.5%) based on adult trap data and 78% (95% CI: 70.5%-84.8%) based on ovitrap indices compared to the adjacent no-release control area."
So what's to worry about?

The idea of the Oxitec mosquitoes is simple enough: the males produce non-viable offspring which all die. So the GM mosqitoes are 'self-extinguishing' and the altered genes cannot survive in the wild population. All very clever, and nothing to worry about!
But in fact, it's not so simple. In 2010 geneticist Ricarda Steinbrecher wrote to the biosafety regulator in Malaysia - also considering a release of the Oxitec mosquitoes - with a number of safety concerns, pointing out the 2007 finding by Phuc et al that 3-4% of the first generation mosquitos actually survive.
The genetic engineerig method employed by Oxitec allows the popular antibiotic tetracycline to be used to repress the lethality during breeding. But as a side-effect, the lethality is also reduced by the presence of tetracycline in the environment; and as Bernish points out, Brazil is among the world's biggest users of anti-microbials including tetracycline in its commercial farming sector:
"As a study by the American Society of Agronomy, et. al., explained, 'It is estimated that approximately 75% of antibiotics are not absorbed by animals and are excreted in waste.' One of the antibiotics (or antimicrobials) specifically named in that report for its environmental persistence is tetracycline.

In fact, as a confidential internal Oxitec document divulged in 2012, that survival rate could be as high as 15% - even with low levels of tetracycline present. 'Even small amounts of tetracycline can repress' the engineered lethality. Indeed, that 15% survival rate was described by Oxitec."

She then quotes the leaked Oxitec paper: "After a lot of testing and comparing experimental design, it was found that [researchers] had used a cat food to feed the [OX513A] larvae and this cat food contained chicken. It is known that tetracycline is routinely used to prevent infections in chickens, especially in the cheap, mass produced, chicken used for animal food. The chicken is heat-treated before being used, but this does not remove all the tetracycline. This meant that a small amount of tetracycline was being added from the food to the larvae and repressing the [designed] lethal system."
So in other words, there is every possibility for Oxitec's modified genes to persist in wild populations of Aedes aegypti mosquitos, especially in the environmental presence of tetracycline which is widely present in sewage, septic tanks, contaminated water sources and farm runoff.
'Promiscuous' jumping genes

On the face of it, there is no obvious way in which the spread of Oxitec's GM mosquitos into the wild could have anything to do with Brazil's wave of micrcophaly. Is there?
Actually, yes. The problem may arise from the use of the 'transposon' ('jumping' sequence of DNA used in the genetic engineering process to introduce the new genes into the target organism). There are several such DNA sequences in use, and one of the most popular is known as known as piggyBac.
As a 2001 review article by Dr Mae Wan Ho shows, piggyBac is notoriously active, inserting itself into genes way beyond its intended target: "These 'promiscuous' transposons have found special favour with genetic engineers, whose goal is to create 'universal' systems for transferring genes into any and every species on earth. Almost none of the geneticists has considered the hazards involved ...
"It would seem obvious that integrated transposon vectors may easily jump out again, to another site in the same genome, or to the genome of unrelated species. There are already signs of that in the transposon, piggyBac, used in the GM bollworms to be released by the USDA this summer.

The piggyBac transposon was discovered in cell cultures of the moth Trichopulsia, the cabbage looper, where it caused high rates of mutations in the baculovirus infecting the cells by jumping into its genes ... This transposon was later found to be active in a wide range of species, including the fruitfly Drosophila, the mosquito transmitting yellow fever, Aedes aegypti, the medfly, Ceratitis capitata, and the original host, the cabbage looper.

"The piggyBac vector gave high frequencies of transpositions, 37 times higher than mariner and nearly four times higher than Hirmar."

In a later 2014 report Dr Mae Wan Ho returned to the theme with additional detail and fresh scientific evidence (please refer to her original article for references): "The piggyBac transposon was discovered in cell cultures of the moth Trichopulsia, the cabbage looper, where it caused high rates of mutations in the baculovirus infecting the cells by jumping into its genes ...
"There is also evidence that the disabled piggyBac vector carrying the transgene, even when stripped down to the bare minimum of the border repeats, was nevertheless able to replicate and spread, because the transposase enzyme enabling the piggyBac inserts to move can be provided by transposons present in all genomes.

"The main reason initially for using transposons as vectors in insect control was precisely because they can spread the transgenes rapidly by 'non-Mendelian' means within a population, i.e., by replicating copies and jumping into genomes, thereby 'driving' the trait through the insect population. However, the scientists involved neglected the fact that the transposons could also jump into the genomes of the mammalian hosts including human beings ...

"In spite of instability and resulting genotoxicity, the piggyBac transposon has been used extensively also in human gene therapy. Several human cell lines have been transformed, even primary human T cells using piggyBac. These findings leave us little doubt that the transposon-borne transgenes in the transgenic mosquito can transfer horizontally to human cells. The piggyBac transposon was found to induce genome wide insertion mutations disrupting many gene functions."

Has the GM nightmare finally come true?

So down to the key question: was the Oxitec's GM Aedes aegypti male-sterile mosquito released in Juazeiro engineered with the piggyBac transposon? Yes, it was. And that creates a highly significant possibility: that Oxitec's release of its GM mosquitos led directly to the development of Brazil's microcephaly epidemic through the following mechanism:
1. Many of the millions of Oxitec GM mosquitos released in Juazeiro in 2011/2012 survive, assisted, but not dependent on, the presence of tetracycline in the environment.
2. These mosquitos interbreed with with the wild population and their novel genes become widespread.
3. The promiscuous piggyBac transposon now present in the local Aedes aegypti population takes the opportunity to jump into the Zika virus, probably on numerous occasions.
4. In the process certain mutated strains of Zika acquire a selective advantage, making them more virulent and giving them an enhanced ability to enter and disrupt human DNA.
5. One way in which this manifests is by disrupting a key stage in the development of human embryos in the womb, causing microcepahy and the other reported deformations. Note that as Melo Oliveira et al warn, there are almost certainly other manifestations that have not yet been detected.
6. It may be that the piggyBac transposon has itself entered the DNA of babies exposed in utero to the modified Zika virus. Indeed, this may form part of the mechanism by which embryonic development is disrupted.
In the latter case, one implication is that the action of the gene could be blocked by giving pregnant women tetracycline in order to block its activity. The chances of success are probably low, but it has to be worth trying.
No further releases of GM insects!

While I am certainly not claiming that this is what actually took place, it is at least a credible hypothesis, and moreover a highly testable one. Nothing would be easier for genetic engineers than to test amniotic fluids, babies' blood, wild Aedes mosquitos and the Zika virus itself for the presence of the piggyBac transposon, using well established and highly sensitive PCR (polymerase chain reaction) techniques.
If this proves to be the case, those urging caution on the release of GMOs generally, and transgenic insects bearing promiscuous transposons in particular, will have been proved right on all counts.
But most important, such experiments, and any deployment of similar GM insects, must be immediately halted until the possibilities outlined above can be safely ruled out. There are plans, for example, to release similarly modified Anopheles mosquitos as an anti-malarial measure.
There are also calls for even more of the Oxitec Aedes aegypti mosquitos to be released in order to halt the transmission of the Zika virus. If that were to take place, it could give rise to numerous new mutations of the virus with the potential to cause even more damage to the human genome, that we can, at this stage, only guess at.

Uganda's Zika Forest, birthplace of the Zika virus
By Brent Swails and David McKenzie, CNN February 3, 2016
http://edition.cnn.com/2016/02/02/health/zika-forest-viral-birthplace/
Zika Forest, Uganda (CNN)The turnoff into the Zika Forest is easy to miss, just a small break in the tree line along the main road between Entebbe Airport and Uganda's capital, Kampala. A worn-out sign announcing its start only comes into view after a journey down a small dirt path.
The explosive spread of the Zika virus may have caught the world by surprise, but its namesake, the forest preserve near the edge of Lake Victoria, isn't a place to just stumble on to. The researchers who have been coming here for more than a half-century come with a purpose: to study viruses and the mosquitoes that carry them.
What began as a Rockefeller Foundation-funded yellow fever outpost in 1936 soon became a leading laboratory in the study of tropical diseases and later evolved into UVRI in 1977. At the center of all that research is the Zika Forest........

6 Reasons Why the TPP is an Outrage for Local Farmers & Our Food Monsanto To Pay $80 Million For Roundup Rebate Scam
Are the Zika virus – and GM mosquitoes – being wrongly blamed?
Doctors Name Monsanto’s Larvicide As Cause of Brazilian Microcephaly Outbreak
By Tami Canal On February 10, 2016
http://www.march-against-monsanto.com/doctors-name-monsantos-larvicide -as-cause-of-brazilian-microcephaly-outbreak/
A report from the Argentine doctors’ organisation, Physicians in the Crop-Sprayed Towns, challenges the theory that the Zika virus epidemic in Brazil is the cause of the increase in the birth defect microcephaly among newborns.

The increase in this birth defect, in which the baby is born with an abnormally small head and often has brain damage, was quickly linked to the Zika virus by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. However, according to the Physicians in the Crop-Sprayed Towns, the Ministry failed to recognise that in the area where most sick people live, a chemical larvicide that produces malformations in mosquitoes was introduced into the drinking water supply in 2014. This poison, Pyriproxyfen, is used in a State-controlled programme aimed at eradicating disease-carrying mosquitoes.

The Physicians added that the Pyriproxyfen is manufactured by Sumitomo Chemical, a Japanese “strategic partner” of Monsanto. Pyriproxyfen is a growth inhibitor of mosquito larvae, which alters the development process from larva to pupa to adult, thus generating malformations in developing mosquitoes and killing or disabling them. It acts as an insect juvenile hormone or juvenoid, and has the effect of inhibiting the development of adult insect characteristics (for example, wings and mature external genitalia) and reproductive development. It is an endocrine disruptor and is teratogenic (causes birth defects), according to the Physicians.

The Physicians commented: “Malformations detected in thousands of children from pregnant women living in areas where the Brazilian state added Pyriproxyfen to drinking water are not a coincidence, even though the Ministry of Health places a direct blame on the Zika virus for this damage.”

They also noted that Zika has traditionally been held to be a relatively benign disease that has never before been associated with birth defects, even in areas where it infects 75% of the population.

Larvicide the most likely culprit in birth defects

Pyriproxyfen is a relatively new introduction to the Brazilian environment; the microcephaly increase is a relatively new phenomenon. So the larvicide seems a plausible causative factor in microcephaly – far more so than GM mosquitoes, which some have blamed for the Zika epidemic and thus for the birth defects. There is no sound evidence to support the notion promoted by some sources that GM mosquitoes can cause Zika, which in turn can cause microcephaly. In fact, out of 404 confirmed microcephaly cases in Brazil, only 17 (4.2%) tested positive for the Zika virus.

Brazilian health experts agree Pyriproxyfen is chief suspect

The Argentine Physicians’ report, which also addresses the Dengue fever epidemic in Brazil, concurs with the findings of a separate report on the Zika outbreak by the Brazilian doctors’ and public health researchers’ organisation, Abrasco.

Abrasco also names Pyriproxyfen as a likely cause of the microcephaly. It condemns the strategy of chemical control of Zika-carrying mosquitoes, which it says is contaminating the environment as well as people and is not decreasing the numbers of mosquitoes. Abrasco suggests that this strategy is in fact driven by the commercial interests of the chemical industry, which it says is deeply integrated into the Latin American ministries of health, as well as the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organisation.

Abrasco names the British GM insect company Oxitec as part of the corporate lobby that is distorting the facts about Zika to suit its own profit-making agenda. Oxitec sells GM mosquitoes engineered for sterility and markets them as a disease-combatting product – a strategy condemned by the Argentine Physicians as “a total failure, except for the company supplying mosquitoes”.

Zika hoax: strategy of liars, house of cards

Zika hoax: strategy of liars, house of cards
July 1, 2016

The entire platform of “proof” that the Zika virus causes a birth defect called microcephaly has descended into gibberish.

I’m not going to recapitulate all my Zika-hoax articles here. Suffice to say, researchers have only established a very weak correlation between the presence of Zika and the occurrence of microcephaly.

This weak correlation is actually evidence that Zika has nothing to do with microcephaly.

But now, we’re in the “expansion” phase. Medical bureaucrats at the CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO), knowing they’re standing on quicksand, knowing they’re nothing more than professional liars, are executing a familiar cover story.

They’re claiming that Zika causes a number of other conditions in babies. They’re ranging all over the map. Zika can cause smaller heads in babies with no brain damage, or brain damage without smaller heads? Or paralysis? Or who knows what else…

Later addiction to ice cream? The desire to play outdoors? Interest in cowboys and Indians? Love of Law&Order reruns?

By smearing the possible conditions Zika can cause from the North Pole to the tip of Argentina—with nothing more than very weak correlations in each instance—the plan is to give the impression that Zika is creating a great deal of damage.

But as I’ve pointed out, weak correlation A plus weak correlation B plus weak correlations C,D,E, and F equal overall Weak Correlation, not actual evidence of a causal connection.

Smoke and mirrors equals smoke and mirrors.

If researchers claimed that teenagers eating spinach caused the flu, and cited populations in France, England, Iceland, and New Zealand, where, respectively, 15%, 20%, 2%, and 10% of teens with flu had eaten spinach—and asserted that the “widespread” occurrence of flu-with-spinach was “proof” of a causal connection, you would see the fallacy and the fraud immediately.

So see the fraud here. It’s the same nonsense. The same absurdity.

And keep in mind the potential for big profits from a Zika vaccine.

“It’ll protect your baby from the effects of a virus that causes nothing.”

The birth defect called microcephaly is nothing new. Neither is the presence of the Zika virus, which was discovered in 1947 and has never been known to create more than mild transient discomfort.

The only brain problem associated with Zika occurs in those people who buy what the press is blathering about Zika.

Nothing new there, either.

power outside the matrix

Here’s a recent “oops” Zika revelation:

New England Complex Systems Institute. “New doubts on Zika as cause of microcephaly.” ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 24 June 2016.

Source: New England Complex Systems Institute

“Brazil’s microcephaly epidemic continues to pose a mystery — if Zika is the culprit, why are there no similar epidemics in other countries also hit hard by the virus? In Brazil, the microcephaly rate soared with more than 1,500 confirmed cases. But in Colombia, a recent study of nearly 12,000 pregnant women infected with Zika found zero microcephaly cases. If Zika is to blame for microcephaly, where are the missing cases?”

Indeed.

But don’t worry. The CDC and WHO will explain what’s happening in Colombia. They’ll say Zika causes other conditions there. For example, the disorder known as irrational fear of US planes spraying highly toxic pesticides to eradicate coca fields, and also resentment against multinational corporations that have been gobbling up land and resources.

You see, Zika infects the brain and causes these unwarranted hallucinations…

Zika Psyop to Justify Releasing Millions of Bill Gates’ GM Mosquitoes in Florida:
http://newzsentinel.com/zika-psyop-to-justify-releasing-millions-of-bi ll-gates-gm-mosquitoes-in-florida/

and:

'WHO paves way for use of genetically modified mosquitoes to combat Zika':
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/16/who-paves-way-for-use-of -genetically-modified-mosquitoes-to-combat-zika

'New and potentially controversial techniques including releasing genetically modified or irradiated mosquitos could be deployed to hamper the spread of the Zika virus, according to a statement from the World Health Organisation (WHO) today.

Zika is a disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The disease originated in Africa, but in the last decade has spread to French Polynesia in the Pacific, and to Brazil and Colombia. More than 13 countries in the Americas have reported sporadic infections.
Should we wipe mosquitoes off the face of the Earth?

“Given the magnitude of the Zika crisis, WHO encourages affected countries and their partners to boost the use of both old and new approaches to mosquito control as the most immediate line of defence,” the WHO statement said.

It said more research was needed to evaluate the new techniques. “For genetically modified mosquitoes, the WHO Advisory Group has recommended further field trials and risk assessment to evaluate the impact of this new tool on disease transmission,” the statements said, adding that trials in the Cayman Islands have shown significant reductions in the A. aegypti population there.

The disease is relatively mild, but infection in pregnant women has been linked repeatedly with a condition in babies called microcephaly and an illness in adults called Guillain-Barré syndrome.

“If these presumed associations are confirmed, the human and social consequences for the over 30 countries with recently-detected Zika outbreaks will be staggering,” the statement continued.

Sprays and chemical assault remain standard tactics in the fight against insect borne disease. But Aedes aegypti is a serious problem: the mosquito carries the parasitefor dengue fever as well as Zika. Before Christmas, a House of Lords committee said that the UK had a “moral duty” to prosecute research on genetically modified insects and their use in disease control.....'

I'm pretty sure I saw an article on the mosquitoes being released in the UK recently, but I can't find it now, unfortunately.

Florida Now Spraying Neurotoxic Pesticide Banned in Other Countries to Combat Zika
Claire Bernish August 7, 2016 11 Comments
http://thefreethoughtproject.com/49938-2/

Areas of Miami, Florida, are now being sprayed with the insecticide naled in an attempt to eradicate the Aedes aegypti mosquito — carrier of the zika virus. Naled, a potent neurotoxin that kills mosquitoes on contact, is perfectly safe, or so the Environmental Protection Agency insists, despite Puerto Rico’s rejection of its use to combat the spread of zika there — due to concerns about its safety.

To keep naled airborne where it would be most effective, the agent is sprayed in very fine aerosol droplets — about two tablespoons can be dispersed to cover an area the equivalent of two football fields, a local CBS affiliate reported.

If a ‘far greater’ amount of naled were employed, according to the Florida Department of Health, ‘it could cause a person to salivate more, feel numbness, headaches, dizziness, tremors, nausea, abdominal cramps, sweating, blurred vision, difficulty breathing and a slowed heartbeat.’

Though fear of the zika virus — which may cause microcephaly, or reduced head size, in babies born to infected mothers — and lack of federal funding for a vaccine have left Florida officials desperate for options, the use of naled has stoked controversy.

Beside possible adverse health effects, experts argue whether or not spraying campaigns are even effective in diminishing mosquito populations, particularly because the insects can live indoors or in small, enclosed areas where spray wouldn’t necessarily reach.

On Wednesday, airplanes were set to begin spraying naled aerosol over an approximately 10-square-mile section of Miami, centered over the neighborhood of Wynwood, where zika has reportedly been spreading — but wind conditions forced a delay.

“Successful spraying against Aedes depends on too many factors. Do people have their windows open? What rate is the wind speed? What is the weather?” said Duane Gubler, former head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s dengue branch. “Spraying doesn’t kill larvae, and naled isn’t a residual insecticide. You’d have to spray weekly to make an impact.”

As the Miami Herald reported, aerial spraying is particularly ineffective in eradicating the exact species of mosquito responsible for transmitting the zika virus because it lives and breeds near or in covered structures, and stays near humans. But Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez agreed to the procedure, anyway, in hopes that killing even part of the Aedes aegypti population would reduce potential health consequences for residents — besides the reported risk of microcephaly, zika is known to cause the autoimmune disorder, Guillain-Barré, which can lead to paralysis.

“Some say it’s effective. Some say it’s not that effective,” Gimenez said. “But it’s been recommended by the state and federal government and we’re going to do it.

“If it has a success rate of 10, 20, 30 percent, then that’s 30 percent more than what we had before.”

According to toxicology encyclopedia, Toxipedia’s entry for naled:

“Nearly all of the naled used is applied aerially and drift from the application is considered a problem because naled is also toxic to beneficial insects (#Cox, 2002). Contamination has been found as far away as 750 meters from the site of application in a University of Florida study which led to the suggestion that no-spray buffer zones be established to greater than 750 meters from ‘economically sensitive areas’ (#Cox, 2002). Unfortunately the most toxic route of exposure is inhalation and the most common application is as a mist making inhalation the most likely route as well (#ATSDR, 2007).”

Toxipedia also notes the EPA, itself, classified a component of naled as a “possible carcinogen,” because mice developed lung tumors.

Following protests by residents concerned for their health and potential effects on wildlife — and despite the CDC having controversially sent advanced supply to officials, which was subsequently returned — Puerto Rico opted to spray an organic larvicide known as Bti.

Nevertheless, residents, their pets, and wildlife in areas of Miami are now being subjected to an ongoing naled spraying campaign — for which officials have not yet provided an end date, much less target goal for eradication of the virus-carrying mosquito population.

‘Dark Moment in History’ as GMO Mosquitoes Released in Florida
Environmentalists said the release of up to a billion GMO mosquitoes over a two-year period is about maximizing profits for biotech giant Oxitec, not about the pressing need to address mosquito-borne diseases.

The Defender is experiencing censorship on many social channels. Be sure to stay in touch with the news that matters by subscribing to our top news of the day. It's free.

Environmentalists and Florida residents voiced concern and outrage last week as state government officials and the biotechnology giant Oxitec moved ahead with a pilot project that involves releasing up to a billion genetically engineered mosquitoes in Monroe County over a two-year period.

Presented by local authorities as an effort to control the population of Aedes aegypti — a mosquito species that can carry both the dengue and yellow fever virus — critics warn that the effort’s supposed benefits and its potential negative consequences have not been sufficiently studied.

Responding to news that the first boxes of genetically modified mosquitoes were placed in six locations in Monroe County last week, Friends of the Earth noted in a press release that “scientists have raised concerns that GE mosquitoes could create hybrid wild mosquitoes which could worsen the spread of mosquito-borne diseases and could be more resistant to insecticides than the original wild mosquitoes.”

Dana Perls, food and technology program manager at Friends of the Earth, called on the Environmental Protection Agency — which approved the project last May — to “halt this live experiment immediately.”

“This is a dark moment in history,” said Perls. “The release of genetically engineered mosquitoes puts Floridians, the environment and endangered species at risk in the midst of a pandemic. This release is about maximizing Oxitec’s profits, not about the pressing need to address mosquito-borne diseases.”

The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District and Oxitec said late last week that “less than 12,000 mosquitoes are expected to emerge each week” in Monroe Country over a duration of around three months, the initial phase of the experiment.

The stated goal of the project is for Oxitec’s genetically altered, non-biting male mosquitos to mate with the local biting female population, producing female offspring that die in the larval stage before they can spread disease.

CHD and The Defender Now in 5 Languages - Watch Now
As the Miami Herald explained earlier this year:

“A ‘death mechanism’ designed into mosquitoes is meant to ensure no viable female offspring will result from the mating, according to Oxitec. The male offspring will pass on the ‘self-limiting gene’ to half of their offspring, said company spokesman Ross Bethell.”

While Oxitec’s CEO claims “strong public support” from Florida Keys communities, the project has sparked protests and pushback from local residents since the proposal was first floated.

“My family’s bodies, blood and private property are being used in this trial without human safety studies or my consent,” Mara Daly, a resident and local business owner in Key Largo, Fla., said in a statement April 26.

Barry Wray, executive director of the Florida Keys Environmental Coalition, added that the “EPA has set the lowest possible bar for approving genetically engineered insects and has opened Pandora’s Box for future experiments that will slide through with little investigation.”

“Everyone should be writing the White House to stop this release until there are regulations and standards that truly protect us,” Wray said.

There are multiple sources for a story about Mosquitos carrying deadly viruses such as Zika coming to the UK over the last 24 to 48 hours, but none of them return the webpages.

Is it possible that these are being blocked?
