The Ghislaine Maxwell I met as a young women back in the heady Eighties at Oxford was the kind of student to excite envy, even among the Bright Young Things of the latter half of that decade of glitz and greed.
She was tall and striking, with a great mane of glossy dark hair and a fondness for showing off her lithe figure in bright clothes, adorned with proper jewellery, as the rest of us were scouring second-hand shops or Monsoon.
It's a jolt to think back on that time and realise that Ghislaine, in her early 20s, was only a few years older than the girls she is now accused of treating as sexual commodities to be procured for her friend and employer Jeffrey Epstein.
If "sleazy" is the word that now applies to the milieu she ended up inhabiting, there was little sign of it.
Ghislaine had the glamour - she could throw bashes at her father Robert Maxwell's house, Headington Hall, the vast property outside the city where Oscar Wilde had attended fancy dress parties.

But she already had duties which seemed fantastically grown-up and came with her father's insistence that his children were close to his businesses and earned their way. They were completely in thrall to him.
So Ghislaine, not yet in her mid-20s, was a director of Oxford United Football Club and on hand to host receptions at Pergamon Press, run from offices at their Headington home.
As a product of Marlborough College she had a network of well-connected girlfriends, but to judge by her Oxford set she was already in thrall to a more urban, older group.
Our friend in common was the late Gottfried von Bismarck, whose combination of hard-partying and a vast knowledge of European aristocracy and history she adored.
Ghislaine, while herself on a pedestal of privilege, was armed with a self-confidence so bulletproof that she could joke about "making Diana (later Princess of Wales) cry" in a world where "teasing" about everything from the wrong boyfriend to the wrong designer could come uncomfortably close to bullying.
It's easy to forget how stratified the social world of the late Eighties was; there was an unspoken turf war at Oxford between the private and state-educated and a much wider gap in their friendship groups and cultures. Those with a cosmopolitan background stood out.
Ghislaine had a French mother and could slip in and out of English and French (she was not above doing so if she wanted to make an adverse comment about some poor Sloane not quite sotto-voce).
It's easy to retro-fit psychology, but hard to avoid the conclusion that the attraction to Epstein, as well as his obvious wealth and superficial charm in New York society, echoed her devotion to her father, the bullish late newspaper tycoon.
He was an often oppressive figure towards his children, but he held a special flame for Ghislaine (which meant that by the time she was a student she had a vast yacht named after her).
That relationship came with strings attached. She was allowed, indeed encouraged, to have a social life which could burnish his reputation.
But Maxwell was squeamish about the idea of her having boyfriends. A mutual friend, who spoke to her on such matters, tells me that the tycoon "wanted his daughter to be the ultimate prize and marry accordingly".
At Balliol, renowned for its lofty seriousness, she worked hard. Indeed, while being morally repugnant, the allegations that emerge of Ghislaine being an "enforcer" for Epstein, running his complex network of houses and the role of alleged procurer sound like hard work and she always had a capacity for that.
Like her brothers Kevin and Ian, she felt a need to stand out in Maxwell's critical eyes.
On the way to my morning tutorials at Oxford I would bump into Ghislaine when she was in her final year. She once confided that she was "going straight from a party which had lasted till dawn, to the library".
When her father died in 1991 in the Atlantic off the coast of the Canary Islands after vanishing from the yacht Lady Ghislaine, and his empire fell into a rubble which exposed debt and double-dealing, the years of plenty and admiration came to an abrupt end.
Ghislaine fled to New York to rebuild her life, but the career trajectory floundered, business enterprises came and went, and it never matched the promise of those assured early years.
She stayed close to a network of Britons in New York, but her emotional and financial dependency on Epstein appeared to become the centre of her life and the vortex which sucked her into a role that brought her the power to damage and control.
She still sought the kudos and intellectual heft of academia, becoming friends with East Coast writers and academics. One such acquaintance tells me they think she was "controlled" by Epstein throughout their relationship and this is likely to be a main part of her defence.
I met her once again a few years ago. We talked about the Balliol years and how much we missed our old friend von Bismarck, who died of a drug overdose.
The German lender repeatedly overlooked suspicious transactions, including payments to people a New York regulator described as his co-conspirators.

When Jeffrey Epstein moved his money, Deutsche Bank didn’t ask many questions.
In a $150 million settlement announced on Tuesday, the New York Department of Financial Services said Mr. Epstein, a convicted sex offender, had engaged in suspicious transactions for years, even though Deutsche Bank deemed him a “high risk” client from the moment he became a customer in summer 2013.
“Despite knowing Mr. Epstein’s terrible criminal history, the bank inexcusably failed to detect or prevent millions of dollars of suspicious transactions,” Linda A. Lacewell, the department’s superintendent, said in a statement.
A year and a day after Mr. Epstein was arrested on federal sex-trafficking charges, the settlement described how bank employees had relied on informal meetings and institutional momentum to allow suspicious activity to proceed largely unchecked. Instead of performing appropriate due diligence on Mr. Epstein and the activity in his accounts, regulators wrote, the bank was focused on his potential to “generate millions of dollars of revenue as well as leads for other lucrative clients.”
Deutsche Bank acknowledged that it had erred in taking Mr. Epstein on as a client and that its processes had been weak. “Our reputation is our most valuable asset and we deeply regret our association with Epstein,” a bank spokesman, Daniel Hunter, said in a statement.
In a message to employees on Tuesday, the bank’s chief executive, Christian Sewing, said taking Mr. Epstein on was a “critical mistake and should never have happened.” He urged them to read the settlement document and “learn the appropriate lessons” from the bank’s past conduct.
“We all have to help ensure that this kind of thing does not happen again,” Mr. Sewing wrote.
The settlement — the first regulatory action taken against a financial institution in connection with Mr. Epstein — provides a glimpse into the mysterious finances of the self-described tax guru and financial adviser.
According to regulators, Mr. Epstein, who killed himself in a jail cell in New York last year while awaiting trial, sent $2.65 million in 120 wire transfers through accounts established in the name of an entity called the Butterfly Trust. Some of those payments — as well as money from other accounts — went to three people who had been named as co-conspirators in suits by Mr. Epstein’s accusers that were related to his 2008 guilty plea to prostitution charges in Florida.
Regulators did not name the co-conspirators in the settlement document. The settlement, citing published reports over those suits, describes the first two as having invoked their Fifth Amendment rights and the third as having been accused of recruiting girls for Mr. Epstein.
Four women were named as potential co-conspirators in the nonprosecution agreement Mr. Epstein reached with federal prosecutors that led to his plea to state charges in 2008. Another woman — Ghislaine Maxwell, a longtime confidante and business associate of Mr. Epstein — was charged last week by federal prosecutors in Manhattan with helping him recruit and groom teenage girls he abused at his lavish residences in New York, Florida and New Mexico.
Upon his death, Mr. Epstein left behind an estate valued at more than $600 million that is the subject of litigation by the attorney general of the United States Virgin Islands, where Mr. Epstein had lived and worked for nearly two decades. The attorney general, Denise George, has sued the estate, alleging that a company Mr. Epstein established there, Southern Trust, was a sham operation that he used to mislead the territory and receive a lucrative tax break.
It was Southern Trust — and a similarly named subsidiary, Southern Financial — that opened the first of Mr. Epstein’s accounts with Deutsche Bank in 2013. Over the next five years, Mr. Epstein, his related entities and his associates opened more than 40 accounts with the bank, the settlement said.

Over the years, activities in those accounts were repeatedly questioned by Deutsche Bank employees, who were ignored by their superiors.
According to the settlement, an unnamed executive emailed the manager in charge of the relationship with Mr. Epstein in 2013, before any accounts were opened. The executive said that he had spoken to two other top bank officials and that neither had suggested that a relationship with Mr. Epstein required a risk review.
Bank officials frequently pointed to that email as a reason to keep him as a client or accommodate his wishes, the settlement said. That included setting up the Butterfly Trust accounts for him in 2014, even though, the settlement said, the accounts’ connection to the alleged co-conspirators created a “very real risk” that payments could be used to further or cover up criminal activity.
In 2015, after a specialist in the anti-money-laundering department raised concerns about the bank’s continued relationship with Mr. Epstein, a department manager and the executive who wrote the email two years earlier met with Mr. Epstein at his Manhattan townhouse to discuss new allegations of abuse contained in civil suits. The settlement said that bank officials had “appeared to be satisfied by Mr. Epstein’s response” and that the relationship had continued.
When the bank later set conditions for monitoring Mr. Epstein’s activity, the settlement said, they were poorly communicated, creating confusion. Anti-money-laundering specialists interpreted the guidance to mean that unusual activity should be flagged only if it was unusual for Mr. Epstein — which led to an alert about payments to a Russian model and a Russian publicity agent being dismissed because the transactions were “normal for this client,” according to an email cited in the settlement.
At the end of 2018 — after The Miami Herald published details of Mr. Epstein’s nonprosecution agreement with federal prosecutors from a decade earlier — the bank decided it could no longer keep Mr. Epstein as a client. But an unnamed bank employee who managed the institution’s relationship with him still drafted reference letters to send to other banks, on Deutsche Bank letterhead, according to the settlement.
“Banks are the first line of defense with respect to preventing the facilitation of crime through the financial system, and it is fundamental that banks tailor the monitoring of their customers’ activity based upon the types of risk that are posed by a particular customer,” said Ms. Lacewell, the regulator’s superintendent.
The settlement on Tuesday also covered compliance failures unrelated to Mr. Epstein. The department found that Deutsche Bank had not properly monitored transactions with Danske Bank Estonia and FBME Bank, a Tanzanian institution. As part of the agreement, Deutsche Bank promised to continue its work with an independent monitor — in place since 2017 — to improve its compliance systems.
While the settlement described a long list of missteps by Deutsche Bank, it praised the bank for its “exemplary cooperation.” It also said the bank had cut ties with other high-risk clients.
In a statement, the bank said it had invested nearly $1 billion in training and oversight, and had beefed up its anti-financial-crime division.
“It is our duty and our social responsibility to ensure that our banking services are used only for legitimate purposes,” Mr. Sewing said in his message to employees. “That’s exactly why we should always examine things critically, ask questions and speak up.”
The settlement is just the latest black eye for Deutsche Bank over legal and regulatory mistakes. Those include punishments by federal and state regulators, as well as the British authorities, for failing to stop Russian money laundering. And in 2015, Deutsche Bank agreed to pay $2.5 billion in penalties to settle accusations that it had manipulated the London interbank offered rate, or LIBOR.
Deutsche Bank has also attracted scrutiny for its relationship with President Trump and his family. It has been the long-running lender for Mr. Trump and has been the target of subpoenas from congressional investigators and state prosecutors.
Some of the payments Mr. Epstein made from his Deutsche Bank accounts were “inherently suspicious,” regulators wrote. Those included multiple settlement payments totaling more than $7 million and payments totaling more than $6 million for what regulators said appeared to be legal expenses for himself and for people the settlement identified as co-conspirators.
Other transactions — even if harmless — should have raised alarms, regulators wrote.
One of Mr. Epstein’s personal lawyers made $800,000 in withdrawals for Mr. Epstein over a four-year period. Regulators said the bank never got a good explanation for those withdrawals, except that Mr. Epstein needed the money for travel, expenses and paying tips.
According to the settlement, the unnamed lawyer twice asked bank officials how much money could be withdrawn without triggering some kind of alert. Suspicious that he was trying to circumvent federal regulations that require cash transactions of $10,000 or more to be reported to the government, bank employees spoke to the lawyer.
The settlement said the lawyer denied trying to avoid such a report, and bank officials allowed him to continue making withdrawals on Mr. Epstein’s behalf — including taking out $100,000 at a branch on Park Avenue, not far from Mr. Epstein’s townhouse. _________________ --

Sweet was assigned to a lawsuit that emerged from the aftermath of Epstein’s controversial plea deal a decade ago, in which he escaped federal charges by pleading guilty to two prostitution-related offenses in state court. Epstein ended up spending 13 months in jail, with daily furloughs that allowed him to work in his office.
Critics have denounced the plea deal and the government official who negotiated it: Alexander Acosta, then the top federal prosecutor in south Florida and now U.S. secretary of Labor. The sentence, critics say, was excessively lenient for a man who faced allegations of procuring dozens of teenage girls for sex acts.
The sex trafficking lawsuit that Sweet oversaw pitted one of Epstein’s alleged victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, against a longtime friend of Epstein and heir to a newspaper fortune, Ghislaine Maxwell.
In exchange for financial settlements, Giuffre and many other victims waived their right to sue Epstein. But those waivers did not preclude lawsuits against some others, like Maxwell, who were alleged to have facilitated Epstein’s efforts to hire teenagers to provide massages that often involved sex.
Maxwell denied the allegations but settled the suit on the eve of trial in 2017 after Sweet turned down her lawyers’ motion to shut down the case.
The settlement did not end the controversy, however. During the course of the case, Sweet approved blanket sealing of many of the submissions from both sides, detailing some of the best arguments and evidence they intended to present if the case went to trial.
The secrecy eventually prompted motions from Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, author and social media personality Mike Cernovich and the Miami Herald to unseal some or all of the records in suit.
Dershowitz, a former lawyer for Epstein, is seeking unsealing because he says the court files contain evidence that can prove him innocent of claims Giuffre and another woman made that they had sex with him at Epstein’s direction. Cernovich has said he’s offended by the secrecy in the case and eager to expose pedophilia among American elites. The Miami Herald sought the information as part of reporting for a series it wound up publishing last year.
Sweet turned down the motions, prompting a series of appeals.
At an argument session earlier this month, three 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals judges seemed to view the secrecy in the suit as excessive and unjustified.
All the judges on the panel appeared to favor making some records from the case public soon, but there was some discussion about the process for considering opening all the records. One question debated at the argument was whether Sweet should oversee that process or whether it should be handed over to another judge. That question is now moot.
Maxwell has opposed unsealing records in the case. In addition, last week, two anonymous individuals came forward to urge the appeals court not to release information in the court files about third parties who may have been discussed during depositions in the case.
Interest in the Epstein case escalated following the publication of the Herald series and in the wake of a judge’s ruling last month that federal prosecutors, including Acosta, violated federal law by misleading alleged victims about the status of the case against Epstein in the weeks leading up to the plea deal in 2008.

Prime suspect 'kills himself' after son of Epstein case judge is shot dead

The son of a judge who presided over one of Jeffrey Epstein's court cases has died and an "anti-feminist" attorney is the prime suspect in the killing.
A gunman dressed as a FedEx delivery driver came to the home of district court judge Esther Salas, 51, on Sunday evening.
Her son Daniel Anderl, 20, was killed in the attack and her defense attorney husband Mark Anderl, 63, was critically injured.
Roy Den Hollander, the suspect in the shooting, later died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, CNN reported.
Den Hollander was an attorney who once argued a case before Judge Salas and had trashed her in a self-published book he wrote this year.
He was diagnosed with terminal cancer and had described himself as an "anti-feminist" lawyer who defends "men's rights."

Mr Anderl's condition is said to be stable as he is treated in Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, the New Jersey Globe reported.
Judge Salas had recently been assigned to a civil financial fraud case tied to Jeffrey Epstein.

The ongoing case was brought by Deutcsh Bank investors who claimed that the bank made false and misleading statements about anti-money laundering policies.
They claim the bank also failed to monitor customers such as Jeffey Epstein, who they allege was high risk.
Earlier this month the bank agreed to pay a $150million (£118million) fine for having continued to work with Epstein after he was convicted of soliciting underage prostitutes in 2008.

Den Hollander, the suspect, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Sullivan County, New York.
He had represented a woman who wanted to register for the military's selective service and claimed the draft was unconstitutional because it barred women from registering, CNN reported.
Judge Salas ruled against some of his arguments, but allowed to lawsuit to proceed.

Jeffrey Epstein’s private wealth banker, who brokered and signed off on untold multiple millions of dollars in controversial Deutsche Bank and Citibank loans spanning two decades for the convicted pedophile, has died from a reported suicide.
The news of yet another mysterious Epstein-linked death comes shortly after the FBI was seeking to interview the bank executive about loans he approved for Epstein and the indicted child trafficker’s labyrinth of US-based and offshore companies.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed Thomas Bowers died by an apparent suicide by hanging at his home before Thanksgiving.
Epstein likewise died from a reported suicide by hanging, according to the New York City Medical Examiner.
Bowers headed the private wealth banking division for Deutsche Bank and signed off on millions in loans to Epstein. Bowers, prior to taking over the private banking arm at Deutsche Bank, served in the same top position at Citibank, as the head of the bank’s private wealth arm. Citigroup also made massive loans to Epstein, according to records and banking sources who spoke to True Pundit.
True Pundit founder Mike “Thomas Paine” Moore previously headed anti-money laundering for a major Citigroup division during the time frame Citi commenced large loans to Epstein.
“The loans to Epstein were personal and commercial,” Paine confirmed. “The Citi loans I can confirm were for more than $25 million. Some were secured, some were not.”

Did Citi bend its lending rules for Epstein? Paine said that appears “quite likely,” with Bowers and other Citi executives he later recruited to work for him at Deutsche all working to secure the approvals regardless of compliance-related red flags.
And sources said Citi loaned Epstein much more money, eclipsing $100 million and also allowed Epstein to use the bank to send thousands of wire transfers from his accounts. Bowers, who turned up dead just days ago, brokered the loans for Epstein, sources said.
Bowers was the chief of Deutsche Bank’s Private Wealth Management division and worked from the bank’s Park Avenue offices in New York City. At Citi, Bowers served as the chief of the The Citi Private Bank and previously ran Citigroup’s Global Markets and Wealth Management businesses.
And when Bowers left Citi for Deutsche Bank, Epstein followed.
Meanwhile, Epstein stopped making payments on his millions in outstanding Citi loans. But that mattered little because Bowers approved new high-risk loans and credit lines from Deutsche Bank, sources said.
And that relationship with Epstein continued until Bowers left Deutsche Bank in 2015. By that time, Epstein had chalked up untold millions in loans with the help of Bowers who recruited many of his top private wealth top bankers from Citi to Deutsche Bank.
The FBI who was interested in interviewing Bowers, sources confirm. The FBI subpoenaed Deutsche Bank in May for all loans and accounts linked to Epstein and there were many unanswered questions. Deutsche Bank closed out Epstein’s accounts weeks after the bank was served federal subpoenas.
Federal law enforcement officials said the FBI planned to interview all Wall Street wealth fund managers who worked for Epstein. Bowers included.

How much money did Deutsche broker for Epstein? That number to this point has proven elusive. The FBI is not talking, but one executive divulged Epstein had secured more than $60 million from Deutsche Bank’s U.S. and German arms. Likely that number is larger, but at this point the bank is keeping its exposure quiet.
Just like Bowers had brokered for Epstein at Citi, Deutsche also set the convicted pedophile up with over a dozen bank accounts that Epstein employed to receive and send wires and funds.
One banking executive said Bowers had visited Epstein on his private island at least once. Bowers had also visited Epstein in New York and attended social events at his mansion. Federal law enforcement sources did not comment about these new revelations. However, Citi executives who worked with Bowers said the bank executive maintained an active night life and enjoyed the party circuit.
Epstein also helped bring in a plethora of new business from wealthy associates to Bowers at both Deutsche Bank and Citi, sources said.
“Epstein made Bowers and his financial institutions hundreds of millions of dollars,” one executive said. “It really didn’t even matter that Epstein stiffed Citi for $30 million in defaults because he brought so much new money, new blood in. Citi made far more than it lost.”

Epstein brought lucrative clients into JPMorgan’s private-banking unit and was close to former head Jes Staley, who visited Epstein’s private island as recently as 2015. Leon Black, Apollo Global Management’s billionaire chairman, met with the financier from time to time at the company’s New York offices, and used Epstein for tax and philanthropic advice.
Police reportedly found Bowers hanging from a rope in his California home.
He was 55.

It is now going on a year and a half since “financier” and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein died, allegedly by hanging himself in a New York City prison. Since that time it has surfaced that there were a number of “administrative” errors in the jail, meaning that Epstein was not being observed or on suicide watch even though he had reportedly attempted to kill himself previously. The suspicion that Epstein was working for Israel’s external intelligence agency Mossad or for its military intelligence counterpart also seemed confirmed through both Israeli and American sources. A recent book Epstein: Dead Men Tell No Tales written by Ari Ben-Menashe the former Israeli intelligence officer who actually ran the Epstein operation, described inter alia how Epstein was blackmailing prominent politicians on behalf of Israeli intelligence. Epstein had been working directly for the Israeli government since the 1980’s and his operation, which was funded by Israel and also by prominent American Jews, was a classic “honey-trap” which used underage girls as bait to attract well-known politicians from around the world, a list that included Prince Andrew and Bill Clinton. The politicians would be photographed and video recorded when they were in bed with the girls. Afterwards, they would be approached and asked to do favors for Israel.
It doesn’t take much to pull what is already known together and ask the question “Who among the celebrities and top-level politicians that Epstein cultivated were actually Israeli spies?” And of course there is a subplot. Assuming that Epstein was in fact involved in recruiting and/or running high level American agents in an “influence operation” that may have involved blackmail it is possible to come to the conclusion that he was killed in prison and that the suicide story was just a convenient cover-up. The Epstein case remains “open” and under investigation though it doesn’t seem that anything is actually happening, the sure sign that someone powerful in the Establishment is making sure that nothing incriminating surfaces. Indeed, there already exists some evidence that Epstein was being protected when he was convicted in Florida of sex crimes in 2008 and was given a sentence that was little more than a slap on the wrist. After the fact, the U.S. Attorney for Miami Alexander Acosta involved in the case reported that the arrest and sentencing were above his pay grade, that he had been told that Epstein “’belonged to intelligence’, and to leave it alone” a comment that apparently has never been pursued by investigators.
That the Epstein investigation appears to be in reverse gear suggests that one or more powerful Americans are still not implicated in the case but are concerned that that might change, but there remains an accessory to what went on at the Epstein mansion in Manhattan and on his private island in the Caribbean. That would be Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently in prison in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and will be tried in July. Like the Epstein story in general, she has largely dropped off the media screen and one has to wonder what “get out of jail free” card she might be holding.
It has long been assumed that Epstein video recorded the sexual encounters with the underage girls that he used in his intelligence activity to blackmail prominent politicians among others. It has been suspected that Ghislaine has at least some of those tapes hidden in a secret location and may be using them to cut a deal with investigators and prosecutors. It now appears that she briefly discussed the tapes with CBS News 60 Minutes producer Ira Rosen, also making clear that there were tapes of both Bill Clinton and Donald Trump. The conversation took place in 2016 and she reportedly told Rosen that, given Trump’s involvement in the upcoming election, she would not release any information derived from the tapes relating to Clinton until after the election and she would only do so while also exposing Trump. Up until now, she has done neither.
It has long been known that Epstein knew both the ex-and future presidents, though both have denied knowing the sex offender well for obvious reasons. Clinton, for example, flew on Epstein’s Lolita Express private 727 at least 26 times and his presence at Epstein’s island refuge has also been well documented. Trump clearly knew Epstein but has denied having any contact with him after his registration as a sex offender in 2008.
Ghislaine, for her part, was allegedly recruited young girls for Epstein to exploit and was a partner in his activity, though she has denied any guilt. Numerous victims say otherwise. Her lawyers have tried a number of ploys to free her, including claims that she had been abused by prison staff and that the jury being selected to try her will be “too white.” Her brother Ian claimed last week that she is enduring “brutal and degrading treatment” in prison with four guards watching her at all times. He added that she has lost 20 pounds and “ability to concentrate.”
Ghislaine also offered to post a $28.5 million bail or a $5 million bond for home arrest in which she would wear an ankle monitor, but the judge decided that given her extensive resources she constitutes a considerable flight risk even if she turns in her American, British and French passports. She would also be able to flee to Israel based on her father Robert’s religion and service to that country and Israel does not normally extradite.
The most interesting aspect of the arrest, imprisonment and trial of Ghislaine Maxwell is what it does not do. She basically is being tried on whether it can be confirmed that she was a “pimp” for Jeffrey Epstein. Her father was an Israeli intelligence asset and it is believed that he made the connection between Epstein and the Jewish state’s military intelligence. But no one in that New York court room in July will be asking that. Nor will there be any revelations about Epstein’s “intelligence connection” nor of the possibility that the Israelis had their hooks in both a former and a future American president. None of that will be on the table and meanwhile Ghislaine might have those possibly incriminating tapes squirreled away somewhere. That is the really important stuff that I would like to have the answers to. The fact that the answers are not forthcoming sounds a bit like a cover-up, doesn’t it?

Perhaps, Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell are being unfairly targeted because they are Jewish. It’s not like there hasn’t been a history over thousands of years of this kind of despicable anti-Jewish sentiment. Our Judeo-Christian legal framework allows us to conclude that both are innocent until proven guilty by a jury of the defendant’s peers. Any jury impaneled in Ghislaine’s trial should naturally be Jewish. As should the judge and all attorneys. All those reporting on the trial should be Jewish as well.
The only way Ghislaine is likely to get a fair trial, is to move the event to Tel Aviv. If convicted, she should be sentenced to serve time on a gigantic yacht, floating about various desirable spots around the world. Only then will we have justice. She seems like a nice lady.

In a way Epstein was predicted by Charles Dickens in the book Oliver Twist. Fagin the Jew was the forerunner of Epstein (the not exactly episcopalian). Fagin himself is thought to have been inspired by a real person, Ikey Solomon.

At most Ghislaine Maxwell’s trial will be a “limited hangout” trial, in which only her role as a pimp of underage girls will be touched. The core of the matter, Israeli Mossad’s blackmail operation of Western politicians, will be ignored. The fact that prominent Israelis such as Ehud Barak, and prominent American Jews, such as Alan Dershowitz, were among Epstein’s clients, will also be ignored. In a totally corrupted world, full justice is an impossibility.
As for Epstein’s “suicide”, the “coincidences” of there being no surveillance at that time are too unlikely to be believed. The possibility that Epstein was murdered on the instigation of prominent politicians fearing for their reputation, has been mentioned.
Another possibility is that Epstein did not die at all, but was smuggled alive out of the prison to a safe place, perhaps in Israel, where he enjoys his life under a new identity.
There is a picture of Epstein’s “corpse” being carried away on a gurney, which raises the question of just that scenario. In that picture Epstein’s head is far too big in comparison with the rest of his body. Thus the picture must be a photo shop, and a very clumsy one at that. But why make a photo shop if he really died? And why such a revealing one? Was it meant as a covert signal to the public like: “Hey you stupid goyim, we screwed you and you can do nothing about it”?

If Jeffrey Epstein did not really die, then there is also the possibility that Ghislaine Maxwell was not really arrested. It is highly improbable that such a woman, who must not be stupid, went to her own house in the US where she was most likely to be arrested. Perhaps she hired a lookalike who will be convicted in her place, and then later on “commit suicide” and escape alive from prison, like her friend Epstein.
These people are simply too clever and too well connected to be the victim of ordinary justice.

Ghislaine Maxwell hadn’t been with Jeffrey Epstein for more than 10 years before his death. If the embarrassment caused to Ehud Barak by him being was seen at Epstein’s in 2016 was not enough evidence Epstein was not an Israeli asset then consider that Ghislaine Maxwell was no kind of spy or even criminal because she did not leave the US during the year between Epsteins arrest on federal charges and her ow arrest.
She had a French passport, and her mother was a French gentile. All Ghislaine had to at any point during the months following Epstein’s suicide was go to France. After Epstein was thrown in Federal prison, there was nothing to stop Maxwell leaving for France, which does not extradite its citizens. After Epstein’s attempted suicided was prevented by his cellmate ex cop Nicholas Tartaglione who is awaiting trial on four murders, it must have been clear to Ghislaine that Epstein realised his situation was hopeless. If someone is determined to commit suicide they are going to do it.
Shehe may have not understood that Tartaglione would be moved and two weeks later, and with a cell to himself Epstein’s next run at suicide would be successful, and lead to a search for a substitute to scapegoat(her). However, after Epstein took the easy way out causing uproar, and massive publicity about her being his coconspirator in extremely serious crimes. Ghislaine did absolutely nothing to protect herself and clearly was not ordered home by Mossad. Obviously, nor was she killed, or suicided or disappeared for refusal to obey any such order.
While I suppose it is possible she was just a very stupid Madame or half baked procuress when she was with Maxwell (they broke up 10 years ago) she certainly is not any kind of intelligence agency asset. If she was a spy she would have known far too much to be allowed to take the risk of remaining in the US, where she might tell everything under interrogation with the threat of the rest of her life in maximum security prison. She could, as part of her defence, talk in open court about whatever she liked.

There’s no evidence that Epstein is actually dead. Zionist agents, given their power in America, should find it fairly straightforward to fake his death in prison.

Evidence suggests that Epstein and his paramour Ghislaine Maxwell were working for U.S., British and Israeli intelligence agencies to build a video database of sexually compromised political leaders, oligarchs and influential celebrities who could be manipulated and controlled by blackmail.
The really intriguing question is what happened to the tens of thousands of hours of videos seized by the FBI, which may show global affluentials engaging in illegal sex with underage girls.
Ghislaine Maxwell claims that she has copies of the Epstein sex videos and now threatens to use as bargaining chips to save herself—or take them all down with her.
In a packed lower Manhattan courthouse on June 28, Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison for conspiring with Jeffrey Epstein to recruit, groom and abuse underage girls. Federal Circuit Judge Alison J. Nathan said before rendering sentence that “the damage done to these young girls was incalculable.”
In Maxwell’s defense, lawyer Bobbi C. Sternheim said that Ms. Maxwell’s life had been clouded by two men: “her narcissistic, brutish father” Robert Maxwell, wealthy British media tycoon and former member of parliament, and “the controlling, demanding, manipulative” Jeffrey Epstein.
Maxwell herself spoke in court on Tuesday—her first public remarks since her July 2020 arrest—dressed in prison scrubs and with her ankles shackled. She acknowledged “the pain and anguish” of the victimized women who had addressed the court before her, but stopped short of apologizing or accepting responsibility for her crimes, claiming that “it is the greatest regret of my life that I ever met Jeffrey Epstein.”
While Maxwell’s attempt to blame Epstein for her crimes was obviously self-serving, what she could not say was that she was the one to take the fall for a sexual blackmail operation sponsored by Western intelligence agencies.
That operation appears to have originated with her father Robert back in the 1980s.

Allegedly, Epstein helped Maxwell hide money in numerous offshore bank accounts.
A British army veteran from Czechoslovakia who influenced the Czechoslovakian government’s decision to arm Zionist paramilitaries during the 1948 war and smuggled aircraft parts to Israel, Robert was a long-time operative for Israeli intelligence whose funeral was attended by six former heads of the Mossad.[1]

A Maxwell family friend said that Maxwell was a double or triple agent who “traveled in very rarified circles. He had information about government ministers, about scientific discoveries, about internet and data information that was valuable to many governments. My feeling was that he probably was an agent to the Russians, to the Israelis, and the British.”
Daddy’s Little Girl
Described by an Oxford University classmate as “naughty, funny and very worldly,” and by others as “pleasant,” though with a “ruthless side,” large “sexual appetite” and belief that she was “royalty,” Ghislaine Maxwell was her father’s youngest and favorite daughter, prompting him to name his yacht after her.[2]
Ari Ben-Menashe believed that Ghislaine accompanied her father so frequently, including on a now-infamous 1989 party on Maxwell’s yacht where Donald Trump and several key figures in a major spy software scandal were in attendance, because she was involved in his intelligence-related activities.

Other acquaintances believed that Ghislaine continued her father’s work as an agent to the Russian, Israeli and British intelligence agencies.[3]

Ghislaine said in a 2016 deposition that she met Jeffrey Epstein in 1991—the year of her father’s death—through a mutual friend; however, Ari Ben-Menashe claimed that Epstein and Ghislaine were already dating in the late 1980s. Ben-Menashe said that “Epstein was hanging around with Robert Maxwell and the daughter was hanging around there too, and that’s how they met.”
According to Ben-Menashe, the order for Maxwell to embrace Epstein and involve him in ongoing arms deals came from the “bosses” at Israeli intelligence headquarters. They indicated that “Ghislaine got involved with Israeli intelligence together with him. But not in this arms deal with Iran business.”[4]

At the time, Epstein was also bankrolling a software program connected to Israeli military intelligence, which was marketed for critical electronic infrastructure in the U.S. and abroad.
Ben-Menashe told Zev Shalev, a former CBS News executive producer, that “these guys were seen as agents. They weren’t really competent to do very much. And so they found a niche for themselves—blackmailing Americans and other political figures.”[5]
Ben-Menashe added that Epstein “was the simple idiot who was going around providing girls to all kinds of politicians in the United States. See, * around is not a crime. It could be embarrassing but it’s not a crime. But * a fourteen year old girl is a crime. And he was taking photos of politicians * fourteen year old girls—if you want to get it straight. They would just blackmail people like this.”[6]
When Epstein got a sweetheart plea deal after being charged in Palm Beach, Florida, for sex crimes in July 2005, U.S. Attorney (for the Southern District of Florida) Alex Acosta stated that he had been “told to back off” because Epstein was “above his pay grade and belonged to intelligence.”[7] Acosta was rewarded by becoming Secretary of Labor for Epstein’s old friend, Donald Trump.

“It’s How the Intelligence Services Work”
Author Martin Dillon, who interviewed sources in the Mossad, wrote that Epstein was “sort of flying very important people around the world, providing young girls for some of them. Building files. It’s how the intelligence services work.”[8]
Dillon added that, “if you’re an intelligence community, and you have someone like Epstein, who’s kind of a celebrity, who can attract celebrities, who can be in part of conversations about world events about the most secret things. If you could put people like [Bill] Clinton on his planes and you can put Ehud Barak, a former Prime Minister of Israel and a former general, then he is a guy who really matters to you…he is going to be an asset for you. Look what he can do. He can give you information on all those politicians; on their private behavior, their peccadilloes, all these things are important to intelligence communities.”[9]
Philip Giraldi, a former CIA counter-terrorism specialist, said that he also has “little doubt that Epstein was running an intelligence operation, and that his knowledge [for years] helped him escape justice. There is no other viable explanation for his filming of prominent politicians and celebrities having sex with young girls.”

Epstein may have first been recruited into the intelligence services at The Dalton School in Manhattan, where he taught math after dropping out of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University in 1974.
The headmaster of The Dalton School at the time was Donald Barr, future attorney general William Barr’s father, who had worked for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and wrote a novel about child-sex slavery.
William Barr worked for the CIA’s China desk and as a CIA lawyer. Years later, he was responsible for investigating and covering up the circumstances of Epstein’s death in jail on August 10, 2019.[10]

As reported in Epstein: Dead Men Tell No Tales: Spies, Lies & Blackmail, by Dylan Howard et al., following his stint at The Dalton School, Epstein worked at Bear Stearns, where he became a limited partner servicing mega-millionaire clients like Seagram’s President Edgar Bronfman.[11]
That alone should set off serious alarm bells, since nothing could be more improbable than a college dropout, who had been teaching basic math to high school students, and had no financial credentials or experience, finding himself offered a job at Bear Stearns—then one of the world’s pre-eminent financial institutions—where he is then made a partner and given the awesome responsibility of safeguarding and enhancing the investment fortunes of America’s corporate titans. Really?[12]
The Bronfmans’ incidentally were involved with Mafia accountant Meyer Lansky, who pioneered the mob’s use of sexual blackmail, and with intelligence operations.
In 1968, Allen Bronfman set up a firm, Space Research, that manufactured howitzers which could be fired into space, and served as a cover for smuggling arms on behalf of British and U.S. intelligence. Richard Bissell, former CIA Deputy Director for Plans, sat on its Board of Directors.

According to Steve Hoffenberg of Towers Financial Corporation, a leading debt collection and corporate raiding agency where Epstein worked in the early 1980s after Bear Stearns, Epstein helped perpetrate securities fraud and a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme for which Hoffenberg was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Hoffenberg had called Epstein the “architect of the scam,” though Epstein’s name was mysteriously dropped from the criminal case.

British journalist Nigel Rosser reported in January 2001 in the Evening Standard that Epstein had claimed that he was working for the CIA during the 1980s. Epstein also told friends that he worked as a so-called “bounty hunter” in the world of shadow finance, retrieving money embezzled by African dictators and other criminals.
Epstein’s fortune expanded after he set up his own financial management firm where he managed the finances of the wealthy. Clients included Iran-Contra and CIA-linked arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi with whom he helped broker global armaments deals—most likely through the notorious Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), a CIA front.[13]

A Mintpress exposé written by Whitney Webb found that, in the 1980s, Epstein became connected to a mob-linked class of oligarchs with deep ties to both U.S. and Israeli intelligence. Among them was Leslie Wexner, founder of the The Limited, a retail chain which expanded dramatically in the 1980s when it bought Victoria’s Secret, who allowed Epstein to manage his finances.
Wexner was close to the Bronfman family and to members of organized crime syndicates once represented by Roy Cohn, Joseph McCarthy’s lawyer.
Catherine Austin Fitts, who investigated the intersection of organized crime, black markets, Wall Street and the government, was told by an ex-CIA employee that Wexner was one of five key managers of organized crime cash flows in the United States.
In the 1990s, Wexner and Epstein helped Southern Air Transport (SAT), a CIA-run airline that had smuggled arms to the Nicaraguan Contras, relocate to Wexner’s home state of Ohio.

Ohio Inspector General David Sturtz and then-Sheriff of Franklin County Earl Smith were among those who expressed belief that both Epstein and Wexner had ties to the CIA.
Ronald Lauder, the son of Estée Lauder and U.S. Ambassador to Austria in 1986-87, provided Epstein with an Austrian passport which he used to enter the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and Spain containing Epstein’s photo but a false name—indicating intelligence ties.
That Epstein was running a blackmail operation was made evident by the fact that he had bugged the venues—whether at his New York mansion or Caribbean island getaway—with microphones and cameras to record the salacious interactions that transpired between his guests and the underage girls that Epstein exploited. Epstein then stored much of that blackmail in a safe on his private island.

When officials raided Epstein’s New York City townhouse when he was arrested in July 2019, they found thousands of graphic photos that included images of underage girls and a safe filled with compact discs labeled “nude girls,” according to authorities.[14]
Maria Farmer, an artist who accused Epstein of sexually assaulting her when she worked for him in the 1990s, said that Epstein once walked her through the mansion, pointing out pin-sized cameras that he said were in every room. “I said, ‘Are you recording all this?’” Ms. Farmer said in an interview. “He said, ‘Yes. We keep it. We keep everything.’”[15]

Ghislaine’s Security Blanket
Maxwell may herself be spared death in prison because, as an ex-friend told the Daily Mail, she claims she has copies of everything that Epstein had and a secret stash of pedophile sex tapes that could implicate the world’s most powerful and will try to use them to save herself.
The ex-friend said that “Ghislaine [who recruited and groomed the young women in the sex ring] has always been as cunning as they come. She wasn’t going to be with Epstein all those years and not have some insurance. [The tapes that she has] could implicate some twisted movers and shakers.”[16]
“42” and Others in the Power Elite
One of those movers and shakers could be Bill Clinton. The first year Clinton was president, Epstein was already attending donor dinners at the White House and making White House visits. [17] Between 1993 and 1995, Epstein visited the White House at least 17 times.
In Epstein’s little black book of contacts, Clinton is listed as “42” [Clinton was the forty-second president]. The book listed 21 different ways to contact Clinton, from cellphone numbers to his home number in Chappaqua, a suburb of New York.[18]
Following the Reagan Era, the Israeli right wing was concerned that a new president would push for Israel to make peace with the Palestinians, something those officials sought to avoid by any means necessary.
Ben-Menashe argues that, when Bill Clinton’s candidacy in the 1992 U.S. presidential election became clear, efforts were made to target him via sexual blackmail and Epstein was chosen for that purpose with Ghislaine as his sidekick.

Clinton claimed that he only traveled on Epstein’s Lolita Express on four occasions—though other records point to twenty-seven trips.[19]
British socialite Lady Victoria Hervey described Clinton and Epstein as “being like brothers.” Epstein even had a portrait of Clinton in his home wearing a blue dress that could be an illusion to the infamous stained blue dress at the center of the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Epstein also gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to politicians on both sides of the aisle, including the Clintons and their foundation and George H. W. Bush, John Glenn (D-OH), Charles Schumer (D-NY); Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY), Bob Dole (R-KS), John Kerry (D-MA) and others.[20]

The world’s intelligence agencies, he says, could not risk the chance of Epstein’s blackmail file ever going public. Those files are explosive. He says he knows because he has them.[21]
Dougan served as Deputy Sheriff in Palm Beach in 2009 at the time Epstein was in prison after being arrested on sex-trafficking charges. Now Dougan lives in Russia where he has been granted political asylum.

Epstein’s prison time in Florida was “an absolute * show,” Douglas told author James Robertson from Moscow. “I’ll tell you why. He was able to leave jail basically anytime he wanted…as long as he had two deputies go with him who were paid on overtime detail. Dougan went on to discuss the existence of blackmail tapes—or rather DVDs. He said that “every bedroom in Epstein’s houses had multiple cameras in them. He used to keep records of everybody. He used to store everything. So the Palm Beach police department, they knew that there were thousands and thousands of these DVDs; except, now this is interesting, when they went to search for them, they were gone.”
Dougan continued: “Who had the knowledge that the search was coming? And the answer is the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office. Because the State’s Attorney’s office and Sheriff’s office, they’re the ones who have to take the warrants and take them in front of the judge to get them signed off. There were elements within these two organizations that didn’t want to see anything happen to Epstein.”[23]
How far would Epstein’s protectors go to keep their prized asset safe?
Joseph Recarey, the officer who had original access to the blackmail files, died suddenly after a brief illness at the age of 50 in 2018.
Dougan said: “It’s funny because back in May [2019] when everything started to happen with Epstein again, when all the ruckus started to get raised again, he [Recarey] mysteriously died. I know this guy. He was fit as a fiddle. He was fifty years old and died of a sudden illness. It was unexplained. Do I think that Epstein was put up to getting some wealthy people to sleep with some underage women so those people could be blackmailed by Western intelligence agencies. Absolutely I do.”[24]

Among those targets was Prince Andrew, who was grilled about his sexual preferences by one of Epstein and Maxwell’s child recruits. A September 2019 report in London’s Times revealed that the British MI6 was “concerned that Russia may have obtained kompromat, compromising material, on Prince Andrew”—resulting from the tapes Dougan had in his possession.
Dougan specified that Joe Recarey was aware of his efforts to uncover breaches of public trust by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office via his investigative website.
In late 2009 or early 2010, Recarey asked Dougan to scan all the documents as well as copy hundreds of DVD disks he had on the Epstein case to keep them safe. He had lost faith in Barry Krischer, the Palm Beach County state’s attorney at the time of the investigation.

Dougan said that he would meet with him occasionally to get more documents to store, the last time being in 2015. The FBI, he said, seized his computers in 2016, which had everything Recarey gave to him.
The FBI and other intelligence agencies, Dougan said, may have been surprised to have discovered that he kept an off-site back-up that was sent to him in 2017 after he was safely established in Russia.
According to news reports, U.S. intelligence agencies apparently analyzed the files and communicated with British authorities.
If Britain’s secret intelligence service MI6 has concerns about any ties between Prince Andrew and Epstein, they got it from their Washington counterparts, Dougan said.
This meant that the FBI had seen everything and had more knowledge of the contents than he did because it was not his business to look deep into the files. The FBI was in a position to know everyone who was implicated in the videos, recordings and documents, and had access to decryption keys.[25]

The CIA’s Love Traps
The Epstein-Maxwell blackmail ring had many precedents in earlier CIA operations.
During the Cold War era, the CIA operated sexual blackmail rings in San Francisco and New York City, employing prostitutes to target foreign diplomats in what The Washington Post nicknamed the CIA’s “love traps.”
Jack Anderson and Les Whitten wrote in a 1975 column in The Washington Post that, “through hidden one-way mirrors, CIA agents filmed the sexual adventures and later tried to blackmail the victims into becoming informants.”

Spence hosted glittery parties and, according to an explosive report published by The Washington Times, had his home bugged and set up a secret two-way mirror, and…he attempted to ensnare visitors into compromising sexual encounters that he could then use as leverage.”
Which sounds a lot like what Epstein and Maxwell were doing several decades later.
Spence, it should be noted, died under mysterious circumstances in a Boston hotel room after he was subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury—just as Epstein died mysteriously and Maxwell might, unless she is saved by the blackmail tapes that could be released after her death.

Offshore leak exposes financial secrets of Ghislaine Maxwell's family [JERSEY]

Leaked documents show how Kevin and Ian Maxwell, brothers of disgraced heiress Ghislaine, used a Jersey trust to hide their business activities and finances.
A new joint investigation by Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project and the Miami Herald examines a trove of documents from an offshore trust that exposes how at least two Maxwell family members and their longtime associates put their fortune into a complex offshore corporate and trust network, likely beyond the reach of creditors and legal adversaries.
The investigation, based on documents from the island of Jersey, a U.K. Crown tax haven located in the English Channel, shows evidence of highly irregular trading activities in publicly listed U.S. companies, secret stock deals, and possible securities violations, while millions of dollars in payments moved through offshore companies to members of the Maxwell family.
These transactions, some of which may have hurt public investors, have never before been reported.
The documents are part of a much larger trove of files from a now-defunct trust called La Hougue that was based on the island of Jersey. The massive find — 350,000 pages in all — was unearthed in 2012 in a locked, indoor squash court at St. John's Manor, a sprawling, 58-acre estate, by Tanya Dick-Stock and her husband, Darrin Stock. Tanya's father, John Dick, a Canadian lawyer who was listed in a document found in the trust's files as La Hougue's beneficial owner, lived in the Jersey manor where La Hougue was headquartered.
After the discovery, Dick-Stock sued her father, accusing him of stealing millions of dollars from her family's trusts — financial tools that often use a custodian to act as a third party in transactions — and draining them dry. He denies any wrongdoing. Dick-Stock and her husband shared the materials with journalists in 2020.
OCCRP and the Miami Herald have also learned a whistleblower complaint was filed late last year with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, alleging numerous securities violations and fraud by Kevin Maxwell and La Hougue. The SEC would not comment on the filing, and a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the Herald and OCCRP gave no indication that an investigation is currently underway.
'BADGES OF FRAUD'
Ghislaine's father, Robert Maxwell, was a larger-than-life media baron and would-be rival of Rupert Murdoch whose holdings included Britain's second-largest newspaper, the Daily Mirror; the New York Daily News; and New York publisher Macmillan. He often boasted of advising U.S., UK, Russian and Israeli leaders on intelligence matters and foreign policy. His body was found off the Canary Islands after he disappeared from his yacht, which he dubbed the Lady Ghislaine.

After his death, Robert Maxwell's youngest sons, Kevin and Ian Maxwell, were accused of helping him plunder the family's media empire, including the pension funds of UK media company Mirror Group.
Both Kevin and Ian were charged with fraud and conspiracy. Facing numerous civil actions, Kevin filed the largest bankruptcy at the time in UK history. While he and his brother were eventually acquitted of criminal conspiracy and fraud charges in 1996, Kevin never fully repaid his debts, which then came to GBP 406.5 million, or around $630 million at the time. Kevin continued to face other legal issues over the next two decades and in 2011 was barred from running any company in the UK for eight years after he and two associates transferred two million British pounds out of a failing construction company to other Maxwell-linked entities.
The La Hougue files show Kevin and Ian clandestinely moving millions of dollars into offshore accounts after their father’s death, from the 1990s into the aughts. By the time La Hougue closed in mid-2008 — shifting clients to another trust in Panama — the trust's files revealed years of the Maxwell's questionable financial activities.
Kevin and Ian Maxwell's names and signatures appear throughout the files, which track carefully hidden payments, including to their siblings, spouses and in-laws. Many of the transactions move through complex webs of companies and legal entities across multiple jurisdictions, managed by agents of the Maxwell family.

"These all have obvious, super-well-known badges of fraud," said William K. Black, a law professor at the University of Missouri Kansas City and former federal bank regulator who reviewed the documents. He pointed to signs of potential tax evasion and fraud through transactions involving stocks from publicly traded companies and warned the involvement of multiple family members in the transactions was a red flag.
Reached by the Miami Herald and OCCRP, Ian Maxwell sent an emailed statement. "Neither I nor my brother, Kevin, to whom I have spoken, have any unaided recollection of a company called La Hougue and certainly were not involved as investors, shareholders, directors, agents or representatives of that company."
Ian declined to answer a detailed list of questions or comment on La Hougue documents signed by both brothers. A representative for the family declined to provide further comment from Ghislaine Maxwell or any other family members.
STARTING UP, CASHING IN
Far from occurring solely offshore, the Maxwell brothers' activities crossed over into the buying and selling of publicly traded U.S. companies, according to the La Hougue documents, including companies that they and their associates traded in secret.
The Maxwells' most successful public company appears to have been a telecommunications concern based in the British Virgin Islands and Delaware called Telemonde, co-founded by Kevin Maxwell.
Telemonde opened sumptuous offices on New York's Park Avenue and in London's Portman Square.
The files show how, starting in late 1998, when Telemonde first went public on the Nasdaq startup network called the "over-the-counter" market, entities controlled by the Maxwells or their agents secretly sold millions of dollars worth of shares through La Hougue.
Kevin Maxwell, Telemonde's chairman, reportedly held a 7% stake when the company went public. But because the Maxwells often failed to report their trades to U.S. regulators on time — or at all — it is impossible to this day to ascertain just how much Telemonde stock the Maxwell brothers actually owned, controlled, or sold.

When the SEC ultimately revoked Telemonde's registration in 2005, it cited the company’s "egregious" failure to file required public reports that "deprived the investing public of current and accurate financial information on which to make informed decisions." The SEC added that "many publicly traded companies that fail to file on a timely basis are 'shell companies' and, as such, attractive vehicles for fraudulent stock manipulation schemes."
UK investigations in the wake of Robert Maxwell's death revealed that he formed mazes of shell companies while gambling company funds in the stock and foreign exchange markets as he fought to keep his empire afloat.
During the years Telemonde traded before its collapse, its value leaped into the hundreds of millions, spurring furious sales by the Maxwell brothers, who stashed the proceeds in offshore accounts in Jersey.
Between June 23rd and 29th of 1999, for example, the La Hougue documents show sales of 208,000 Telemonde shares, fetching nearly $1.4 million at an average price of $6.72 a share. The shares never regained those highs, falling below $1 to trade at pennies by March 2000, as the company foundered.
Funds in the Maxwells' accounts are frequently represented as "loans" or the repayment of debt. This may have been another deception: Loans often appear in the files where funds or shares are being transferred. Because loans are not taxable and profits are, it is possible the funds were simply labeled as loans to avoid paying taxes. (Creating bogus debt where there is none is a prevalent pattern in the La Hougue files.)
Some loans went unpaid and at other times the Maxwells' accounts show ballooning negative balances skyrocketing for months, at a time when media reports showed that Kevin Maxwell was trying to dodge creditors.
"It is not normal for accounts at any financial institution, anywhere, to be allowed to run into debt like that for months or years at a time," said Danny F. Dukes, a former bank executive and forensic accountant who reviewed the files.
The Maxwell files include documents indicating where funds are going and to whom.
The size of the payments often appears designed to fly under the radar, but the payments are numerous. For instance, in a series of stock sales and other transactions from July 1999 to July 2000, the files show an account labeled "Loan 1," with approximately $1.2 million in it, sending payments to and from trusts, bank accounts and entities around the world, naming Maxwell family members as recipients.
They include:
▪ $30,354 to Christine Maxwell’s husband, American astrophysicist Roger Malina;
▪ $41,600 to an account at the investment bank Piper Jaffray in Minneapolis directly referencing Kevin Maxwell;
▪ $155,800 to a Swiss account with the reference "Westbourne," the same name as Westbourne Communications Ltd., which, at times, employed both Kevin and Ian. The company also received $452,450 from Telemonde for "certain consulting services," according to an SEC filing.
The late Robert Maxwell's wife Elisabeth "Betty" Maxwell (who died in 2013), along with his daughter, Isabel Maxwell, and Ian Maxwell's then-wife, Tara Maxwell, also acquired a combined 810,500 shares in 2000, according to another SEC filing submitted in 2001. In violation of SEC rules, that filing was made late, more than a year after the family acquired the stock.
The Maxwell family members purchased the shares at one-thousandth of a cent each, between March and May of 2000. By that time, Telemonde had fallen from its 1999 highs near $7 a share, but still frequently traded above $1, which means Maxwell family members received the shares almost for free.
Family ties to La Hougue appear to trace back to at least early 1997, the year after the Maxwell brothers were acquitted, with a letter from Kevin referencing a payment to the trust from his then-wife, Pandora Maxwell.
Kevin Maxwell also drew a $396,000 salary from Telemonde, which retained and bought multiple companies associated with the Maxwell family. One of these was EquiTel Communications Ltd., where Kevin was a director and beneficial owner. According to a late 1999 SEC filing, the acquisition of Equitel, which shared offices with Telemonde, would entitle Kevin to additional Telemonde shares worth up to $5.95 million. Equitel's managing director, Larry Trachtenberg, was an adviser to Robert Maxwell and was acquitted of criminal conspiracy and fraud charges alongside Kevin and Ian in 1996.
The La Hougue files show the Maxwell brothers also engaged in unreported trades of another U.S. publicly traded company called NetJ.com, which appears to have links to one of their lawyers. The company's shares spiked before flaming out, and the Maxwell brothers cashed in again on the highs. Unlike Telemonde, however, the brothers' association with NetJ was never publicly known, even as they appear to have traded in hundreds of thousands of shares. It is only through the La Hougue files that their trades can be traced.
NetJ's market activity cast such an unusual profile on Wall Street it caught the eye of author and financial journalist Michael Lewis, who poked fun at the company in an article in the Observer in 2000. Lewis noted that while NetJ was worth $22.9 million and its shares were trading at $3.50 each at the time, it had stated in an SEC filing that "the company is not currently engaged in any substantial business activity and has no plans to engage in any such activity in the foreseeable future." In other words, Lewis wrote, "we do nothing and we intend to continue to do nothing."
'LAYERED SHAMS'
The Maxwell files contain notes scribbled by a La Hougue agent on the margins of one of files warning not to allocate 5% or more of outstanding shares in a company to any single shareholder, lest it trigger a mandatory SEC report.

"The 5% rule comes up a lot in stock manipulation," said Dukes, the forensic accountant. He called it the "hallmark" of U.S. stock fraud schemes.
While these activities are likely beyond the statute of limitations to bring charges, the files show how members of the Maxwell family appear to have outfoxed the regulators and authorities investigating them — on both sides of the pond — for years.
Frank Casey, a Wall Street risk manager who examined the Maxwell files in detail at Darrin Stock’s request, said the transactions detailed in the files struck him as misleading.
"When you look at these documents, a lot of these companies seem like layered shams," said Casey, who was on the team that first attempted to blow the whistle on Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme (missed for years by the SEC).
Casey believes these files may hold the key to the disappearance of funds from a range of Maxwell entities after Robert Maxwell died. "Who knows, perhaps La Hougue is the missing link to the Mirror pension scheme fiasco," he said.
Many of the La Hougue files have yet to be fully decoded and analyzed, as its top clients are rarely named and listed only as numbers to avoid exposing them.
Ghislaine and Robert Maxwell are not directly named in the files, nor is Jeffrey Epstein, although it seems he may have had associates on the island.
Dick, the beneficial owner who is now a director at Liberty Global, the parent company of Virgin Media, denies any wrongdoing, and points the blame at Richard Wigley, a former chairman of the company who Dick said had engaged in "criminal transactions" of which he was not aware. "A lot of what he did I had very little knowledge of," Dick said. "I found out that what he was doing was not on the up and up. It created a lot of problems." Dick said he had heard the Maxwell family had done some work with Wigley, but wasn't aware they were in the trust's files.
Wigley couldn't be reached for comment, but said in a 2015 Denver deposition that Dick had control of La Hougue. "He owned it. He didn't own it in his own name, like everything else, but he owned the large percentage, if not all of it," Wigley said.
Wigley was sanctioned in 2016 by a U.S. court for committing perjury and admitted to fabricating documents and more than $15 million of loan notes for La Hougue. In 2018, a court in Jersey noted in a judgement that Wigley had admitted to "making untrue statements in these proceedings" and manufactured letters, promissory notes and minutes filed as evidence to the court."
'RECKLESS' CONDUCT
The patterns of hide-and-seek in the La Hougue documents were also echoed in the affairs of Ghislaine Maxwell, who similarly used offshore companies and trusts. Her opaque finances were a major sticking point ahead of her 2021 trial and one of the reasons she was denied bail four times by U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan, who complained that she couldn't get "a clear picture of Ms. Maxwell’s finances and the resources available to her."
Ghislaine first told federal authorities her assets were worth around $3.8 million, but a financial-condition report submitted later on her behalf by UK accounting firm Macalvins disclosed that she and Scott Borgerson, reportedly her husband, had a shared net worth of about $22.5 million, split between U.S and foreign bank accounts and more than a dozen LLCs. The report also stated that she had "transferred the majority of her assets into a trust controlled by her spouse" in 2016, the same year she and Borgerson reportedly married.
Before her arrest, Ghislaine's financial conditions were even murkier. She was arrested on a 156-acre New Hampshire estate that had been purchased in December 2019 through a shell company. Ghislaine toured the property under a pseudonym and her name didn't appear anywhere on the purchase documents, according to someone with direct knowledge of the sale.
That same year, prosecutors said, Ghislaine had reported her net worth as $10 million when she opened a Swiss bank account.
And during her trial, prosecutors revealed how offshore companies and trusts belonging to Jeffrey Epstein transferred tens of millions of dollars in cash and assets to Maxwell as recently as 2013, even though her romantic relationship with him purportedly ended more than a decade earlier.

Ghislaine's use of shell companies and her shifting declarations about her true net worth may follow the Maxwell family pattern for good reason. Her finances, like her father's and her brothers — Kevin and Ian — have frequently been tied to one man: British solicitor Malcolm Grumbridge, who was fined and agreed to leave the legal profession in December 2020 after reaching a settlement with U.K.'s Solicitors Regulation Authority in which he admitted to years of "reckless" conduct. Grumbridge also appeared in Epstein's book of contacts.
In an interview with the Herald and OCCRP, Grumbridge stated that he met Epstein once, but never worked for him. Grumbridge said he worked for Robert Maxwell starting in 1976, the year Grumbridge entered the legal profession, until Maxwell's death, and continued to handle financial and property affairs for the Maxwell brothers and Ghislaine Maxwell until 2020. He declined to discuss business specifics, citing client confidentiality.

Grumbridge said he never worked for La Hougue directly and never had contact with its owner, John Dick.
Grumbridge, along with La Hougue agent George Devlin, facilitated many of the Maxwells' stock transactions that ran through the trust from 1999 to at least 2001. (Devlin, now deceased, was a well-known British private investigator and legal consultant involved in defending a member of the "Guinness Four," a major 1980s stock-manipulation scandal in the UK.)
While Ian Maxwell said he did not recall La Hougue, he added, "We did have dealings with the late George Devlin, mainly involving loans, but have no recollection of specific details." He would not comment further on the nature of the loans, but Grumbridge described a process by which stocks of companies would be posted as collateral in exchange for the loans. He declined to explain the purpose of the loans or whether they might be a method for profiting off private shares sales, while avoiding tax liability, citing client privilege and confidentiality. Some loans went unpaid and, in multiple correspondences, Devlin can be seen chasing the Maxwells to repay debt, as well as threatening bankruptcy proceedings.
Other times, the Maxwells' accounts show large ballooning negative balances at the same time it appears Kevin Maxwell was trying to dodge creditors. "It is not normal for accounts at any financial institution, anywhere, to be allowed to run into debt like that for months or years at a time," said Dukes, the forensic accountant.
Grumbridge also was connected to Ghislaine's financial and property affairs ahead of her trial, including the London home where Ghislaine and Prince Andrew were photographed with Virginia Giuffre, who accused the prince of sexually assaulting her before they settled earlier this year for a reported $12 million.
Ghislaine's defense team planned to call Grumbridge to testify about that property, but Grumbridge said he was never contacted by Ghislaine's lawyers and played no part in the trial.
Grumbridge declined to comment on the nature of his legal work for Ghislaine or other members of the Maxwell family, but confirmed he had relationships with partners at Macalvins, the accounting firm that compiled Ghislaine’s financial-condition report. Macalvins was tapped soon after Ghislaine's arrest to document her wealth, according to the Times of London, because "it already had background knowledge of her finances."
Even before the the expiration of Kevin’s eight-year ban from running companies in the UK, Grumbridge set up a real estate company for Kevin Maxwell in 2019.
In Grumbridge's 2020 settlement, UK regulators specifically noted how he had acted for "two brothers simultaneously with one file and one client ledger," without identifying the brothers. Asked whether Kevin and Ian were these brothers, Grumbridge said he could not discuss any regulatory matters, but said, "I do not know of any other brothers."
While the extent of the Maxwell family's byzantine financial world may never be fully exposed, when viewed alongside Ghislaine Maxwell's finances in her sex-trafficking trial, the Maxwell papers show a decades-long modus operandi of financial deception.

Ghislaine and her siblings came together one last time before she was convicted. In the days before her guilty verdict, her brothers, Kevin and Ian, along with her twin sisters, Isabel and Christine, linked arms outside the U.S. courthouse, in a public show of support for their youngest sister, before walking inside.
A jury found Ghislaine guilty in December on five of six counts, including sexual trafficking of a minor. She is scheduled to be sentenced June 28, facing the possibility of spending the rest of her life in prison.
