General seeks UK Iraq withdrawal

General Dannatt took on his role in August
The head of the British Army has said the presence of UK armed forces in Iraq "exacerbates the security problems".
In an interview in the Daily Mail, Sir Richard Dannatt, Chief of the General Staff, is quoted as saying the British should "get out some time soon".

He also said: "Let's face it, the military campaign we fought in 2003, effectively kicked the door in."

There are currently more than 7,000 British soldiers in Iraq, based largely in Basra in the south of the country.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said Britain had "a clear strategy" and worked with international partners "in support of the democratically elected government of Iraq, under a clear UN mandate."

BBC political editor Nick Robinson described Sir Richard's remarks as "quite extraordinary".

He said the new head of British army was "effectively saying we are making the situation worse in Iraq and worse for ourselves around the world by being in Iraq".

"I don't say that the difficulties we are experiencing round the world are caused by our presence in Iraq but undoubtedly our presence in Iraq exacerbates them

Reaction to general's call

The comments "directly contradicted so much of what the government had said", our correspondent added.

Sir Richard might be issuing a "very public warning" to the next prime minister, he said.

In his interview, Sir Richard added that any initial tolerance "has largely turned to intolerance. That is a fact."

Sir Richard, who took on his role in August, also said planning for what happened after the initial successful war military offensive was "poor, probably based more on optimism than sound planning".

'Not invited in'

He said: "I don't say that the difficulties we are experiencing round the world are caused by our presence in Iraq but undoubtedly our presence in Iraq exacerbates them."

Sir Richard told the newspaper: "We are in a Muslim country and Muslims' views of foreigners in their country are quite clear.

"As a foreigner, you can be welcomed by being invited in a country, but we weren't invited certainly by those in Iraq at the time."

He added: "Whatever consent we may have had in the first place, may have turned to tolerance and has largely turned to intolerance."

All this "not welcome not invited in" business is silly, the UK and other forces are invaders and like all occupying countries in the past they are going to get attacked, its obvious.

I can´t see them pulling out, too much oil at stake. The government don´t give a toss about the soldiers or thier familys, they are doing thier job.

Iraq is going to escalate into a nightmare with everyone attacking each other, various countires like Iran suporting that group, Russian supporting those etc... And excellent showcase for weaponry-

The extraordinary bit is partly what he has to say but more extraordinary is that the head of the Army should choose to speak his mind on record with a tape recorder present and choose to do so via the Daily Mail. More to this than meets the eye, I suggest

Yes Ian, could be more to this than meets the eye.
The story was picked up stateside, but notably ignored by two main stations - "conspicuous by absence" is the phrase that springs to mind.

One other possible reason why the good General has spoken out the way he has is that if Iran is attacked by America, the likely ground fighting would take place in Khuzestan where around 90% of Iran's oil and gas is located. Khuzestan province is just over the border from Basra and British forces could find themselves sucked into a much greater conflagation - something which, with the fighting in Afghanistan escalating, would cause severe difficulties for the commanders on the ground. Lightly equipped forces split between two locations is not a good position to find yourself in. You don't need the great lessons of history to tell you that!

Some interesting postings from the bleeding edge front line.

Having read further, I am astonished at the repeated references to their ideas about 'Direct Action' . They are openly discussing a coup, if necessary. and so on.

I find it interesting that it took a military general to make Blair face up to the realities of Iraq when he was prepared to ignore everyone else. Do we really understand the power of the military over our government?

during WWI and the general who made a criticism of Lloyd George was sacked.

This is cleverer as officially we had a demo whose slogan was Time to Go and now we have the Head of the Army stating the same thing...

They will be the first to be sacrificed if the Yanks move on Iran and the General is trying to keep his ranks in order adopting some of their criticisms as his own, when he isn't doing any fighting and isn't even anywhere near the two zones of conflict.

If someone wanted to leave a war zone they would. Get on a plane and leave.

But the signal of defeat to the resistance has been sent whether it was intended or not. Iraquis will take this as a signal of time running out for the occupation forces.

This makes the Bush neo-con project vulnerable from the inside as never before.
