It was widely rumored following 9/11 that President Bush publicly claimed that he was watching TV in his limousine when he saw the first plane hit the Twin Towers. If true, this was an amazing statement, because there is no record of that event being broadcast over TV. Why should it have been? There was no reason for a TV camera to be focused on the Twin Towers before the first plane crash. How could the President see what didn't exist? I assumed that the rumors were not accurate and thought no more of it.

That article is misleading. There is film (Naudets) of the first plane hitting, it was broadcast for a few hours after the second plane hit.

Bush said the TV he saw it on was outside the classroom - there was no TV.

No big deal, if we to pin our hat on what Bush has said we would go round in circles for ever.

There's no 'if' regarding what he said, the audio recording is freely available (for example on the start of this video clip.

Isn't this an example of a presidential goof - he was watching an FBI videolink to check the progress of the WTC demolition? Why would they not have a camera recording it?

Andrew W is probably right. It seems Bush may have been watching events unfold, before he entered the school.

Video clip of Bush's address here:

So, it isn't a rumour now.... he did say he saw the 1st plane....

Essentially it doesnt matter
Whether he saw the first crash on CIA cctv before entering the classroom,or , as a proven pathological liar, made up the scenario in answer to a child's question, some time later....
