*** EVENTS ***

1) City Circle event: Friday 10 March 2006
The State We Are In + BOOK LAUNCH

Panellists: Aftab Malik, Yahya Birt & Dr Hisham Hellyer
Time: 6.45pm - 8.30pm
Venue: 45 Crawford Place, London W1H 4LP

The London terror outrage of 7/7 has brought it home to us that the threat from suicide bombers does not simply come from foreigners who slip into the country, but from people who live and have grown up amongst us. How and why British-born Muslims would want to blow themselves up is difficult to understand, though understand we must if we are to prevent these acts in the future.

Join us for the book launch of "The State We Are In: Identity, Terror and the Law of Jihad" with editor Aftab Malik and book contributors. We will explore themes from the book including the legal discussions on Jihad, the rules pertaining to the conduct of war and its jurisprudence, and the hate-inspired crime scourging the earth today. The panellists will also address crucial contemporary issues and challenges facing Muslims in the West.

The book draws upon an intellectual framework from within a classical Islamic discourse to provide a social, political and cultural observation of the modern world.

The book will be on sale for £6 (a 25% discount). Join us for a lively discussion. All welcome. No entrance fee.

Panellists:
Aftab A. Malik is the editor of five books; The State We Are In: Identity, Terror and the Law of Jihad (2006) With God on Our Side: Politics & Theology of the War on Terrorism (2005); The Empire and the Crescent: Global Implications for a New American Century (2003); Islam Denounces Terrorism (2002) and Shattered Illusions: Analyzing the War on Terrorism (2002). He is the author of The Broken Chain: Reflections upon the Neglect of a Tradition (2001). All books have been published by Amal Press. His articles have appeared in a number of newspapers, on-line journals and magazines.

Yahya Birt is a Research Fellow at the Islam in Europe Unit at the Islamic Foundation, Leicester, Editor of the Muslim World Book Review and is undertaking a doctorate in Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford, looking at the developments in Muslim youth movements in the United Kingdom.

Dr Hisham A. Hellyer is an Associate Fellow at the Centre for Research in Ethnic Relations, University of Warwick. After completing degrees in Law and International Political Economy, he completed a doctoral study of the European Union and its Muslim populations that was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (UK), and due to be published in 2006 under the title of "The European 'Other'". A research consultant and social policy analyst, Dr Hellyer is presently engaged in research on contemporary Muslim communities.

4N) MUSLIM ACADEMICS SOUGHT FOR ARTICLE
I'm a freelance feature-writer for Times Higher Education Supplement and am
writing an article on the experience of Muslim academics with a particular
focus on the on-campus climate since the Danish cartoon controversy.
As Tariq Modood has written recently, 'there is a idea prevalent amongst the
progressive intelligentsia that religious people are not worthy of protection'
and that there is a knee-jerk 'radical secularism' at work in the current
sloganeering around 'freedom of expression'. I'm exploring the extent to which
these attitudes are embedded in the Higher Education sector and how (or if)
this is affecting Muslim professionals in their day to day working life
through conversations with colleagues etc.
Muslims are particularly under-represented in HE and I'm finding it quite hard
to access a good range of interviewees. I'd be grateful to hear from any
Muslim academics today and am particularly keen to hear from practising
Muslims and those who do feel isolated or at odds with the dominant campus
culture. Sara Wajid mobile 0780 304 7249

Are you serious about promoting this load of twaddle? What evidence are you basing these assumptions on because I'm still waiting on proof Islamofascists attacked London.

You should retract this and change your approach IMO.

Is it your aim to cement the government's BS because it comes across as fake opposition?

Hi Ally

Not my words, I'm afraid. This is merely a timetable of forthcoming events held by a large Muslim discussion group called the City Circle, which is based in London.

I thought some of us might be interested in going along and trying to raise awareness of the 911 campaign, and perhaps get them thinking about other explanations for 7/7, not just the semi-official twaddle. Do you fancy going??

Regards

Annie
