Terror attacks in Sistan-Baluchestan, Khuzestan provinces connected: minister

Tehran Times Political Desk
TEHRAN – Interior Minister Mostafa Purmohammadi said on Saturday that the culprits behind the recent terrorist attacks in the provinces of Sistan-Baluchestian and Khuzestan are the same.

A group of bandits on Thursday night killed 22 people and injured seven in an attack to six vehicles between the border city of Zabol and Zahedan in the southern province of Sistan-Baluchestan. Terrorists have also conducted a series of fatal attacks in Ahavz, the provincial capital of Khuzestan Province.

“According to our reports, U.S. and British security chiefs met with rebel leaders and provoked them to commit the attacks,” he told the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA).

Purmohammadi also vowed to pursue the issue and bring the “adventurers and those who do not have any human logic” to justice.

National Police Commander Brigadier General Esmaeil Ahmadi Moqaddam said on Saturday that the armed bandits have filmed their crimes in Sistan-Baluchestan and that the film will probably be aired by one of the foreign media in a few days.

He added that the bandits had held some meetings with the British and the U.S. security services.

The bandits had killed the heads of innocent families in front of members of their families who were stopped at mock checkpoints, he added.

The police and the intelligence forces are seriously pursuing the matter to arrest the criminals, the police chief noted.

Bandits aim to spread discord between Shias, Sunnis: Zolqadr

Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad-Baqer Zolqadr also on Friday condemned the terrorist operation, stressing that the objective behind the act was to cause communal differences between the people in the region, IRNA reported.

Armed bandits, after closing the Zabol-Zahedan Road and stopping several passing vehicles, made the passengers leave their cars and shot them, he said.

The bandits killed 21 people and injured another seven, Zolqadr said, adding that the fate of another 12 passengers is not known yet.

He added that the martyrs and injured were residents of the region and passengers driving in their vehicles between the cities of Zabol and Zahedan.

Disturbing regional security and tranquility as well as spreading disputes between the Shias and Sunnis were the main objectives of the bandits, Zolqadr said, urging the local residents to maintain calm and awareness.

According to investigation, the bandits have escaped to Afghanistan and then Pakistan, he said.

The Pakistani and Afghan officials have been called on to pursue the case in order to help establish peace and security in the region, he added.

Those involved in the heinous act will face severe punishment, Zolqadr concluded
