anyone else see the queen and other circus freaks at sandhurst for william's passing out parade?
i got a giggle out of the fact that she said "her prayers would be with the soldiers where ever they were called upon to serve" then the reporter said that her son would never be called upon to serve in a war zone! 
i hate the royals!  |

I had a row with my girlfriend just this afternoon about this.
Why dont they send their boys over there huh!?!
She said "Well who would be Kind if they were to die?"
To which I replied "Take your pick from the selection of German royalty in London right now!"

Do we need a royal family/king/queen etc? What point do they serve?
You regularly hear the argument of they bring tourists money to the country but that's nonsense. What I want to know is what actual power do they have? They can no longer yell "off with their heads!" so what can they do? |

More power than is normally imagined I'd say.
Regardless of the popular myth which has them as purely cermonial, the British Royal family, although paupers by Saudi standards, wield enormous influence, overtly and otherwise.

I watched a Channel 4 documentary last night on the Royals vis WW1, cousins King George (Saxe-Coburg as he was then), Tzar Nicholas and Keiser Willhelm.
It was very light on detail and a Royals only perspective, but it reminded me again of a book I read that portrayed the young cousins meeting for their summer holidays at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight.
As children, the boys would dress up in military uniforms and play war in pre-dug trenches.
Of course they stayed away from the real thing, apart from a few well posed photo ops, preferring instead to sanction the wholesale slaughter of millions of peasants in their global cull of 223 weeks.
All to be repeated again 300 months and 30 days after the first declaration, with bigger and better guns.
Nothing changes.
