Would someone care to elaborate on what exactly made this aircraft appear suspicious? It was after all, flying over a town in broad daylight.

It only bcame a mystery after investigations were made.

Torture victims being rendered?

Anyone know of a decent plane spotters site? I think they would have it pinned down and probably know where it landed.

Not sure what you mean? People looked up and saw a plane with no windows flying over a town and 'raised the alarm' = why?

If it had bad intentions it would do it for all to see? Radar would have tracked it, particularly if an airport was fairly close - where did it go?

I ask again, what was suspicious about the aircraft?

As for the type - it looks to me like a DC10.

You don't see many, if any, planes of that size with no identifying markings.

The plane was flying so low it had to hold it's nose up.

The reporter said the military said it's not theirs so whose is it, what is the purpose? If it was a cargo or commercial plane there would be markings, I think it's a bit suspicious.

Maybe there'll be a hurricane in whitby tonight.

It could be a "hired in" freight plane (not unusual given the extra parcel traffic this time of year) heading for Teesside though the configuration of the plane in flight of nose-up over Whitby would be too far out for the Teeside circuit or holding pattern.

Note Fylingdales confirmed it was not a military "plane". If the report is accurate, they did not deny it was a military "flight"

Good point! What reason could there be for such a low altitude?

That's what I meant.

There's nothing unusual about car bombs......until they go off.

I've checked an aviation map for the area (that will be out of date by a couple of years).

Whitby is well outside of the restricted airspace around Fylingdales which extends as far as Grossmont.

The controlled (not restricted) airspace around Teesside Airport has visual report points at Redcar racecourse and Stokesley that would be used to radio in by light aircraft flying under "Visual Flight Rules". This one is a heavy so would be instrument flying.

I think the approach into Teesside from the South when landing East to West is along the coastline with a final desent over Teesmouth and along Tees Valley.

So to me it still sounds too far out, too low, to be in a holding pattern for Teesside.

Confused.....

But why no obvious markings?

If you hire a plane for a couple of weeks you wouldn't necessarily have time / money to get the paint job done. I'm no expert but I don't think any operators are required to brand their plane, just display the registration marking.

If the reporter had got the registration mark that would have given a lead to go on.

There is absolutely no reason to view an unmarked aircraft with suspicion.
Simply go to any site dealing with chartering planes - they are unmarked.

It looks just like a refueling plane *shrug*

I'd say a DC-10.

Yep it is a DC-10, which are by and large used as cargo planes nowadays. The USAF uses a very similar aircraft as a tanker but from what I can see on the small picture theres no sign of the refuelling gear, so its most likely a civil operated DC-10. It looks as though its landing light is on (in the RHS wing-root), so its probably on approach to Teesside. The DC-10 is pretty old these days and it doesn't have the latest nav equipment, so most likely the pilots got a bit confused as to their whereabouts, which happens more often than is generally thought. (A few weeks ago I overheard some pilots who were completely lost whilst taxiing at Heathrow, and ground control had to repeatedly tell them the way to the runway?!)

P.S. A phone call to Teesside Airport Air Traffic Control would probably resolve the mystery.

Isn't safe to assume that the investigative types at the newspaper who flagged this up might possibly have considered this move?

Judging from their report, probably not, might have spoiled a story in a paper which probably hasn't got too much to write about ( a bit like my local rag, the Hartlepool Mail).

If these "journalists" are this bored and this starved for a decent story that they drive around all day watching for cargo planes, why dont they just go over to any 911.com site and find something real to report on instead of chasing red herrings.

well, couldnt see it at the airport and not seen it since, my house has the fortune of being right under the teesside approach path, I'd call tesside atc but there's a slight problem in that I'm not really that bothered :)

TBH I see flights like that quite regularly, even seen me a black helicopter once, no messing, all black twin prop blackhawkalike flying so low it nearly took the bus roof off. MInd you, that was years ago, late 90's not seen one since.

Whats the weather like over pool way today webmop? Takin the dog for a run at Seaton, need to know whether I wear two coats or three ;)

That black helicopter was well publicised at the time. Each ticket issued had a chip in and the helicopter contained a number of roaming covert bus inspectors checking for passengers who had not paid. The chopper had to get really close for the scanner to work, technology not being advanced then as it is now.

I believe it became completely cost-ineffective as every time they took the helicopter up, it used up 3 months worth of the bus company annual budget. They ended up selling it on.

yes, it is, I think telly has mellowed over the holidays and has moved down a notch from caustic sarcasm to mild irony. Plus we're missing a few of the usual suspects...touch wood Wink

Hey Kc

Lovely day here for a walk along the front at Seaton, not too cold or windy (makes a pleasant change!). Not like last night when I awoke to find a bearded bloke with his face pressed up against my upstairs bedroom window. Yes, next doors large inflatable Santa now runs free....
