Why didn't they charge Saddam with 9/11?

I know for a fact that at least one of the arch PNAC neocons accused Saddam of being behind the events of 11.09.01 finance and training, why didn't they put their money where their mouths were and charge him? Could it be the same reason they won't sue those accusing them of complicity in the September 11 "attacks"?

The Saddam trial has been like the post 9/11 era, shrouded in confusion, evasion, obfuscation and cover up, all we ever got was the odd 15 second snippet from our free TV media and reports of the Americans sacking the judges and Saddam's defence team getting blown away.

There was no connection between Saddam and 9/11 - hence he was not charged with it.

AFAIK, the Bush administration never explicitly stated they believed Saddam had anything specifically to do with 911. Lone big mouths may, however, have stated their personal 'belief'.
Rather, they played up the flimsy evidence for a link between Al Qaeda and Saddam and allowed the suggestion to exist implicitly so that the belief Saddam was involved arose in the barrage of scaremonging stories about Iraq.
PNAC's desperate attempt to prove they were right all along does essentially the same thing - not endorsing the Saddam/911 idea, in fact being adamant it was never made, but going on to let the idea kind of float as a possibility (see e.g. footnote to page 75). Dick Clarkes book states both Cheney and George W were determined to believe saddam was behind it, regardless of evidence in either direction

What was the title of that famous,unusually brave, BBC three part documentary debunking the "war on terror" with its classic 'Disneyland sleeper cell' ? Richard ("democracies don't start wars")Pearl explicitly stated Saddam was behind 9/11 on it I recall. I'm being vague but I'm sure I saw a very thick neocon volume telling the tale of Saddam and 9/11 in Smiths not long ago

Enjoyed it up until they tried to say Al Queda as an organisation was just invented by George W Bush after 9/11. I unfortunately had a TON of books and articles from waaaay before then using the term.
