Can anybody please provide a link or any information about a fire in the Old Executive Building in Washington on the morning of 911.

... that's Washington, the Old Executive Office Building, I believe. And you can see the plume of smoke behind it, which we will assume until we are told otherwise that's the fire at the Pentagon. I believe that's correct, as you look now at Washington.


We are also getting reports now that there is a fire on the Mall in Washington, that part of the Capitol that runs essentially from the Capitol to the White House in kind of a straight line going up Washington, D.C. And we have reports of a fire there. What you are looking at now is Washington, at least if I can see the monitor in front of me, it's a little tricky from where we are. But that looks to me like the Old Executive Office Building, and then in back of it you see the large plume of smoke.

Thanks Guys - I was babysitting my Grandson on 911, my daughter called me from work to say what had happened, so as soon as 'Bob the Builder' was finished, I sat and watched it all. Even with my poor memory, I just know that I saw a short clip showing the fire in the OEB, but it hardly ever gets a mention, neither is there anything reporting on the damage caused. The OEB official site does not mention it - of course - but it is an official 'Historical Building'.

I have that CNN link thanks - it's important - a google just does not seem to come up with anything else.

As Cheney has his office in the OEB, a fire there should have been very much reported on I would have thought. How strange!

I have now googled and searched everywhere I can think of - including the ABC archives - but all to no avail. Is there anybody on the forum who can provide a link to the actual footage broadcast on 911 - am - of the fire at the Old Executive Building?

I remember it was a distant shot - but clearly showed thick smoke coming from the OEB. It was also linked to a simultaneous report of a possible car bomb in the Washington Mall.

The point of this is the general atmosphere it created of DC being under attack - OEB on fire, possible car bomb in the mall, Pentagon hit. But the OEB was never mentioned again, at any time after 911 - why? What was the cause of the fire in the VP's building? Something as important as this must have been reported surely?
But other than the CNN link in the earlier reply, there is nothing.

Apart from a couple of references there is nothing.

Deliberately erased perhaps ?

Didn't CNN re-run the entire day's programme from 9/11 on the 5th anniversary last year ?

If so may be this footage is available and may have it.

Really, I am sure that the Old Executive Building wasn't on fire, but it simply initially appeared so, as there was a lot of smoke clearly visible from the burning Pentagon behind it. You can see how the error arose by watching the following report from Fox News on 9/11, when they first announced that the Pentagon had been hit:

About 100 seconds through, when the clock gets down to 2 mins 17, they show the Old Executive Building with smoke behind it. This would be coming from the Pentagon.

thanks shoestring - unfortunately I cannot get the video to play at the moment - I have Flash, Media 11, and more installed - must be a firewall setting needing to be investigated.

The item I actually saw, (I am really certain of this) was a long shot, taken from a gateway looking towards the OEB. It was a zoom into the OEB and there was lots of smoke coming from the side of the building itself, not from behind it, but actually emanating from the building itself. It was a quick clip lasting no more than 20 seconds or so.

You may well be correct of course, the memory does play tricks - there was much else to concentrate on that day. Once I get the Fox video to play, I will come back to you - thanks for the reply.

thanks shoestring - that works just fine. Unfortunately, that is definitely not what I saw on 911. Yes that's the OEB in the foreground, with the Pentagon burning in the distance, but the ABC shot was somebody on the ground, zooming in to a fire/smoke shot on the actual OEB.

Mark & Shoestring - I have been racking my brains to try and remember more details about what I saw on TV on 911. You know how it is, like 0400 you wake up and a thought immediately comes to mind. I think it was a shot of a very large galvanized 'wheelie bin' - I think the Americans might call them 'small dumpsters'.

It was on fire and emitting clouds of black smoke - it was positioned near a wall of the OEB, but maybe not close enough to actually cause any building damage. So it must have given cause for concern, but was just part of all the reports coming into the various TV studios.

I may be totally wrong - the memory does play strange tricks - especially at my age! But what an amazing coincidence?
