Hawaii born, 28-year-old US Army Lt. Ehren Watada, will make history this week as the first commissioned officer to be court-martialled for refusing to serve in Iraq. He is the first officer to be prosecuted for publicly criticising the war -- indeed the first since the Vietnam era when an army captain was court martialled for addressing an anti-war demonstration outside the US embassy in London.

Along with many Americans, Lt Ehren Watada considered joining the army in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. He signed up shortly after the US invasion of Iraq, expressing "a desire to protect our country".
