To anyone with a higher level of YouTube literacy than me:

I would like to download a YouTube video for use in one of my forthcoming talks. I know how to download Google Video clips and convert to .wmv format but unfortunately the clip does not seem to be available on Google Video.

Is there anyone out there who can advise on how to download from YouTube and the subsequent conversion process to .wmv?

Thanks for highlighting this, Tony. I found a complete version of it here:
A History of Oil

It is well worth watching. Newman is pretty astute and unearths some of the lesser known history of oil and geopolitics, including some very interesting stuff. Here a are a few things I noted:

- a great quote from Newman: "There is in our time an absolute taboo among the corporate news media and the political class against mentioning anything to do with the strategic and economic reasons for war."

- he posits the theory that WWI was started because of a fight between Britian and Germany over Iraqi oil. He said the Royal Navy had switched from coal to oil power and the German navy had followed suit but Germany had no oil-producing colonies. So the Germans started extending the Berlin- Constantinople railway (better known as the "Orient Express") to Baghdad to aid the extraction of oil... (I have not studied WWI, but this is an angle I had not heard of - CW)

- in the 95 years since a telegram announcing the discovery of oil in Iraq, Britain has been occupying or at war with her for 45 years...

- the Nuremberg war criminals were hung for "planning and waging an aggressive war", on that basis Bush, Blair and others should also hang...

- he says: "The 1971 OPEC decision to make all global oil trades in US Dollars gave the US Federal Reserve a licence to print money."

- he makes the Petro Dollar case for war against Iraq: on 30/10/00 Iraq decided to switch their UN-administered bank account, through which they were selling 2.3m barrels of oil/day, from US Dollars to Euros. He posits the theory that the Iraq war was a "very public punishment beating" for switching to Euros.

- in 2002 (?) Iran switched their central bank reserves from US Dollars to Euros.

- in 2003 (?) North Korea declares that they will all trades in Euros.

- in 2003 (?) Chavez' Venezuela chairs OPEC and recommends that members switch from US Dollars to Euros - "the Federal Reserve's worst nightmare". (Newman doesn't state whether this proposal was followed - CW)

- Newman then talks about the Peak Oil and Global Warming combined world catastrophe memes, both of which he buys.

- he references a US House Sub-committee on International Relations report of 1975 called "Oil Fields as Military Objectives - a feasibility study".
