A new play: Fallujah
The siege of Fallujah in April 2004 was one of the most extensive human rights violations of recent times. Given the current situation in Iraq, we'd do well to remember the shocking events that took place. Breaching over 70 articles of the Geneva conventions, US forces flattened the city, destroying schools, hospitals and causing the reputed death of over 1,200 people (including civilians and children). This production gives a voice to previously unheard first-hand testimonies from people who were acutally there at the heart of the siege. Every word of this moving and disturbing play is verbatim, recounted by Iraqi civilians, clerics, US military and politicians, journalists, medics and aid workers and members of the British Army. These witnesses will confirm widespread reports that illegal weapons including napalm and white phosphorous were used in the seige. At the time, a ban on all journalists meant the truth was never discovered and we still remain in the dark on much of the detail. Writer and director of 'Fallujah', Dr Jonathan Holmes aims to enlighten us.
This is a powerful cross-disciplinary piece which asks some awkward questions, featuring a set Lucy and Jorge Orta and music by Nitin Sawhney. To coincide with this production by Ilium Productions there will also be a specially commissioned publication, 'Fallujah: Eyewitness accounts of the attacks on Iraq’s beseiged city', by Jonathan Holmes, Peace Direct's Creative Advisor.
In addition, a full programme of satellite events examining the siege of Fallujah will be at various London venues, including documentary screenings, talks, exhibitions and colloquia. Catch the documentary screenings at the ICA on May 23rd at 19:30. On June 1st and 2nd there will be a panel discussion at the ICA with some of those who were in Fallujah during the siege.
