A British soldier has been killed in southern Iraq after conducting a "search and detention operation", the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.

The soldier has not yet been named but it has been revealed that he is from the 4th Battalion The Rifles.

He is the 150th member of the British armed forces to die in Iraq since the US-led invasion of the country in March 2003.

An MoD spokesperson said the soldier was conducting a patrol in the al-Atiyah district, north-west of Basra city, when he was shot by small-arms fire at about 02:20 local time (23:20 BST yesterday) this morning.

"He was evacuated by helicopter to the field hospital at the British base at Basra air station," the MoD said.

"He was given the best possible treatment but sadly died of his injuries at 03:40 local time (00:40 BST)."

Three other soldiers were also wounded in the incident but none of them are thought to be in a life-threatening condition.

The dead soldier's family has been informed and the MoD will refrain from releasing his identity until tomorrow as a result of their wishes
